Amore Matchmaking #1

Shouting Match

Rate this book
After the death of his father, Capone Lombardi was tasked not only with keeping his father’s legacy alive, but also to look after his mother and three younger brothers. Putting his own love life on the back-burner, he’s spent the last five years ensuring the family restaurant, Lombardi’s, thrives. It’s pretty sad that the closest he’s gotten to cuddling is nearly being arrested by a ridiculously hot cop with a hard-on for speed limits.

Forty years old and sick of one-night stands and prowling the bar scene, Detective Fuller Sims goes to local Italian restaurant, Lombardi’s, one night for drinks. What he’s not looking for is the youngest Lombardi brother to talk him into his matchmaking scheme. But Fuller is tired of being alone, and Brando Lombardi insists he knows exactly where to find the man of Fuller’s dreams—his overworked older brother, Capone—the guy Fuller almost arrested a few hours earlier.

Taking a chance on each other, Capone and Fuller find out that Brando might have matchmaking skills after all. When a blizzard sets its sights on the rugged Maine coast, a shouting match between the new lovers sends Fuller out into the raging storm. Can Capone find him before it’s too late?

Shouting Match is book one in the exciting Amore Matchmaking series. It features four gay brothers, their eccentric mother, an ornery goat, and way too much pasta.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but I really disliked this book.

The overarching plot is pretty solid: Capone is a chef who worries too much about his family and doesn't realize that he's lonely; Fuller is a detective (not an officer, as he clarifies every two seconds) who is similarly lonely. Capone's younger, irresponsible brother decides to start a matchmaking business and pressures Capone and Fuller to go on a date. They like each other, yada yada, love, yada yada. Yeah, the matchmaking conceit was what drew me in.

The problem, however, is that once the two have their first date, the book kind of just... stagnates. Lots of stuff technically happens, but the two are already sold on each other starting at the 15% mark. What is the point of the rest of the book if there's no (reasonable) push and pull? This very easily could have been a short story, or a novella at best, and all that much better for it.

My other main complaint - besides the lack of chemistry between the two love interests; the very unbelievable situations that occur; the peculiarly queer (and accepting) small town that has not a bit of unpleasantness (seriously, sometimes I wonder whether m/m romance authors have ever even been to a small town before) - is the writing. This book reads very, very young. Fuller and Capone are supposed to be around 40 years old, yet they sound more like teenagers. The actions of a lot of the characters, and the descriptions of events, are strangely immature. A group of 30-something-year-old men fall into a "puppy pile"? An adult man goes on a ride-along in a cop car? A person mocks someone with trauma and gets away with it? What?

Finally, what on earth does the title refer to? There is a grand total of one shouting match in the entire book, but it certainly isn't revelatory or important enough to refer to in the title. Eesh.

Clearly I am not impressed with this book. It needs editing - and here I refer not to spelling errors or grammatical mistakes, but a thorough read through by someone who can suggest ways to improve the plot itself. I don't recommend this book, but feel free to read it if you're interested in an unnaturally nice small town; stereotypes of Italian-Americans that border on uncomfortable; descriptions of good food; plenty of men who seem more like kids.

Shouting Match is a contemporary get-together story from author Pandora Pine. It is the first book in her Amore Matchmaking series and the story is set in a small Maine town. In addition to our two main characters, Capone and Fuller, the large supporting cast comprises Capone’s family (mother, three brothers), Fuller’s work partner, and various town locals. The “small town, everyone knows everyone else’s business” trope was a big theme in the story. I was surprised the “overbearing family” trope didn’t have Fuller on the rails; instead, it was touched on via Capone assuming too much from his father’s final wishes.

Overall, I wasn’t very engaged in this story. I thought it started out strong. The introduction is set five years in the past. Capone hears his father’s final wishes. In the first few chapters, I got the impression that Capone has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Like he’s personally responsible for everyone (else’s) happiness and success in life. I was excited to see how a character like Capone would mesh with police Detective Fuller.

I’m always happy when I see that Ms. Pine has a new book, especially the start of a new series. Our MC’s are both middle aged adults & they act it. I don’t my silliness in my MC’s but it’s nice to every now & then have the grown-ups act like grown-ups. Capone is the eldest brother of the Lombardi clan and he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. On his father’s death bed, he has tasked Capone to take care of the family. Capone takes his duties seriously. It was never his dream to take over the family restaurant, but he goes to culinary school and does just that. Fuller is a detective who hasn’t had a relationship since his “fatal attraction” type relationship ended several years previously. He does pop up to cause some trouble but is quickly shot down. Capone’s brother, Brando, comes up with a new venture, matchmaking, & guess who his first victim is, I mean customer, yup you guessed it Fuller & Capone. Things are not smooth sailing for our MC’s, there are some angsty moments along the way, but they do finally get their HEA. I can’t wait to see his brothers get their HEA.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion

I’m a fan of this author so I was surprised I didn’t enjoy this as much as usual. The story couldn’t decide if it wanted to be funny or dramatic so it was just uncomfortable to me. The drama went in like 3 or 4 different directions with no main antagonist…. The crazy ex, the job, commitment issues. It also bothered me that the request made by his dad that he supposedly had been so busy holding together the family for never actually got done. In 5 years he never told his brother how proud dad was- never not once? He asked him to tell him every day. Lastly the MCs just lacked sparks-zero heat. I’m going to try the next one as I said this author is a favorite so I’m hoping it’s just a one off

ARC received in exchange for my honest review

2.5 ⭐

This is a new-to-me author and the blurb of this book had definite promise. The oldest brother set up by the youngest in a matchmaking scheme that's destined to fail? Sounds like a hoot.

Capone is set up by brother Brando with Fuller, the town's cop. These two have always rubbed each other the wrong way (except that one time Fuller pulled Capone over and rubbed him the right way...😉). The two unexpectedly buy in and do the whole date thing and... it goes surprisingly well.

Both of these characters are a little older (Fuller is 40) and it was such a relief to see these two written in a not-adolescent way. They were honest, there was no miscommunication and how they talked with and about their friends and family was just really sweet. Having said that, there were times they didn't seem all that mature so that felt a bit inconsistent at times. I just put that down to the fact that being older doesn't make you not act liken adolescent at times. We all do it. Why should these two MCs be any different?

Capone does grapple with Fuller's job, especially when Fuller is involved in a couple of serious incidents. He doesn't handle it at all well and says some stupid stuff, and this is about the only drama we have. Its short lived and again, handled like a pair of grownups.

I had some minor issues with the characterisation. Capone giggles. A lot. It honestly seemed a bit unlikely for his character. Fuller I found hard to get a read on. He was grumpy, sort of. But then also completely not and this was a bit jarring. The plot also felt somewhat strained and went on for way longer than it needed to . By the end I just kind of wanted to to wrap up. However, there was lots to like about this if contemporary MM romance is your jam.

Shouting Match is a great first book in this new series from Pandora Pine. It follows the Lombardi brothers with this book focused on Capone, the oldest of four.
Capone is set up with Fuller, a local detective, by his brother who has started a new venture called Amore Matchmaking. They've been attracted to each other from afar for a while but never thought to ask the other out. Capone has been grieving for his father and working hard to keep his family and their restaurant together whilst Fuller has been gun shy after a bad experience three years ago but it now fed up of feeling lonely.
For most of the book, it felt to me like a romantic comedy with the odd dose of drama to keep both the MC's and readers on their toes. The family and friends of both men are hilarious, supportive and so loving. All they want is to see them happy and if that's together, even better. The Lombardi family is such fun to read. They've come a long way since losing their father but it becomes clear that not all is as it seems on the surface with them all. Fuller has his best friend and work partner as his family and back up through life and he's just as keen to see Fuller happy. There is a lot of entertainment along the way but also some serious moments with questions asked, and reflection needed by both men, as well as a couple of intense moments that really bring them closer.
I found this to be a really entertaining read and I'm looking forward to seeing how things unfold for the rest of the brothers. Pandora has also managed to carry on with and include a found family/community that I think is a theme in all of her books, one of my favourite about them.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

A very funny, light and fun read. The beginning was so strong, I found my self tearing up then cracking up in a matter of a few pages. Pandora has a great wit and sense of humor. So in love with the Lombardi family and excited to see where they all go. I enjoyed the couple and the story so much, but it was not all smooth sailing. There was just an element missing that I can’t explain, the flow was off. It didn’t make it any less enjoyable, it just took away from the story a bit and caused some confusion. For example, the story line with Dick goes no where? Why is Dr. Carson so rude to Fuller? I know these could be answered in future novels of the series, I just felt like quite a few things fell flat and could leave the readers questioning. This is the first full novel I’ve read of Pandora Pine and it definitely made me want to read much more.

I enjoy books with large boisterous families and the Lombardis are that and more. I’m truly intrigued by Brando. I have a feeling he may be my favorite, but I liked getting to know Capone and Fuller. Though they frustrated me at times with their actions and words, it’s obvious they both care deeply and go together like spaghetti and meatballs. They make a shining match but now I really want some pasta.

This is a great start to this new series. Capone has spent the last few years working himself to the bone and taking care of his family. Fuller has dedicated his life to his career and no matter how lonely he is, he doesn't see that changing. Brando's new crazy matchmaking plan pairs these two together but gives them both so much more than a companion, Capone gets back his friendships with his brothers and Fuller gets a family that will love and support him. I enjoyed watching them navigate the ups and downs of z new relationship and come out stronger on the other side.

A sweet story about with both Capone and Fuller learning to navigate love and a relationship. As well as snarky brothers, nosey neighbours and weighted promises.

I loved Fio's goat.

I freaking loved this book! The Lombardi family is one you will love by the end of ch 1.
Capone the lovable older brother is such a worrier. You can tell he takes everything seriously and doesn't relax much. He shoulders all the perceived family obligations and happiness. He tries so hard to follow his father's wishes that he neglects his own happiness. I was so happy that the match Brando came up for him worked out. He needed to sit back and enjoy life and not let it pass him by.
Fuller our hard nosed cop, is really a marshmallow. He puts out the big gruff aura even though that's not really who he is. He is a guy with a lot of emotional damage. He so cute in admitting to himself that he wants a family. Ioved that show of vulnerability.
Capone and Fuller are exactly what the other needs. I was so happy they were able to see past their differences and come together.

I started reading this and was getting a feel for the characters. When the date was going on I came across this passage that when he went to Italy he didn't want to go with the hearing aid crowd. I came to a halt and had to ask myself on whether to finish. I chose not to. I am losing my hearing and usually not sensitive to a off comment but it just went wrong with me.

Really 3 1/2. Loved the beginning of the book and the end of the book but the middle kind of lagged a bit for me. Not bad but when we got the big storm, I was hooked! Cute premise for a new series and I can't wait to read about all the brothers and hopefully Mom as well.

Book 1 of the Amore Matchmaking series features not only the start of youngest brother Brando’s business, but the relationship of Brando’s first couple (and, therefore, first success!)! While you’re not supposed to poop where you eat, Brando must’ve decided that making his oldest brother the first client of Amore Matchmaking didn’t fall into that category.

Capone Lombardi has kept his father’s legacy alive since his death 5 years earlier. He runs the restaurant, Lombardi’s, with his mother and help from his 3 brothers and he has occasional hookups. This is, essentially, what Capone has in his life; the restaurant, his mom and his brothers. Everyone is healthy and, he thinks, happy – even though Brando is still skating through life being, well, Brando. Would Capone like to find a man to call his own, to come home to and to have to take some of the burden from his shoulders? Absolutely. First, however, he needs to focus on not being arrested for speeding by the extremely hot, is that a nightclub in his pants, Detective Fuller.

Fuller Sims is a 40-year-old Detective who is completely over the bar scene and one-night stands. He’s too old and, frankly, too grumpy. He wants to find something lasting, something he can love like he loves his job. First, however, he needs to not take advantage of having the extremely attractive, is he rocking back into my unfortunate pants situation right now, Capone Lombardi.

When he lets Capone go with a warning due to another call, the last thing Fuller expects is for Brando Lombardo to decide that he’s going to start a matchmaking business and that he has the man of Fuller’s dreams in mind for him. When that turns out to be Capone, who agrees to be the inaugural couple in Brando’s new venture.

Capone and Fuller get along, have the hots for one another and are falling very quickly. When Capone sees firsthand how dangerous Fuller’s job can be, he’s not sure if he can handle the fear that comes with being the romantic partner of a Detective, no matter how strong their feelings are. After deciding that their fragile new love is worth overcoming the worries about safety, an argument during a blizzard puts both men in harm’s way when they’re trying to get to one another to apologize and profess their love. Will they make it through the storm to declare their love and spend their lives together?

I received a complimentary copy of this book and, as always, my review is unpaid and honest.

Misnomer

This was a good start to this new contemporary series following this family who got through losing their father and are just now starting to feel like they can live again. Where else should they start living than with love?

Capone is the eldest son in his family, and between his father's last words and that responsibility he has taken over both the family restaurant and watching over his brothers. Though he doesn't see it this has kept him apart from his family, moving him out of the close brotherly relationships he had as he tries to be more parental, and putting a huge weight on his shoulders. When his youngest brother starts up a matchmaking company he thinks it's just another ridiculous scheme, but the first match made is between himself and the sexy cop who recently pulled him over for speeding, Fuller. The two hit it off surprisingly well, opening Capone's eyes to what he has been missing in life, both in love and in family.

Fuller is a great cop, but he worries he sacrificed his love life for that success. His own parents were not role models in love so he spent his younger years making sure he could get away from them and be successful. Focusing on work got him where he needed, but now it feels like he is too old and set to make it in love as well. Being setup with Capone feels ridiculous, but the two connect so well, and attraction is definitely there. Making a relationship work isn't easy but Fuller is willing to put the same amount of effort as he did into his job if this thing can be real.

This story was sweet and spicy as these two try to make things work. Capone has a temper and can jump to conclusions, while Fuller is still sceptical of love and of his ability to it after his upbringing. They each give it all they have though and their friends and family make a big difference as well. Capone gets to realize how much he has missed about his brothers by not being a brother since his father died. Building back up those bonds is just as important to him as his love life. Fuller gets to see a strong and loving family, even when they have fights, and figure out that he isn't just his past. It was very sweet and made for a good story.

The only odd thing about this book is its name and blurb. Confusingly, the entire book is named after an event that happens at the nearly the end of the entire story. It sort of boils down the journey of this relationship to a single event, which really feels like it ignores everything else. The anticipation of when this event would happen made the rest of the story get a bit lost at times, which is too bad. Otherwise it seems to be a good opener for a fun new series.

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted my copy of this book.

Capone has been the head of the family since his father passed away. His youngest brother has decided to start a matchmaking scheme, and Capone is target one! But did it have to be Fuller, the hot cop who got him all hot and bovvered under the collar after a traffic stop?

This book, right? Is as pure a warm and fuzzies slash too stinking cute book as you're gonna get! Or at least, the purest I've had in such a long ass time, and I loved it!

Capone is a restauranteur, and Fuller the local cop, in a small town where everyone knows everything about everyone else. Brando, the youngest brother of 4, and his matchmaking scheme needs a poster couple and who better than Fuller and Capone, eh?

What follows is a delightfully easy read (a really REALLY good thing!) with lots of misunderstandings, no real break-up but wonderful make-ups after those misunderstandings!

Both men are scared: Fuller after his last relationship, and what happens here because of that. Capone because of Fuller's job and because he has to look after his brothers and his mum. Capone had a wonderful upbringing, but Fuller not so much. They love the small town they live in, just wishing everyone wasn't so in-yer-face about everything. But when something happens, that in-yer-face-ness is vital!

It's funny, it's sweet, some smexy times, but not too many, just the right amount for this book. Some nosy brothers, all with a secret they've been hanging on for so long.

Said brothers are fabulous, and mum is awesome! And that goat is hilarious and nasty to all the brothers except Fio, who feeds him!

Fio is next, I have Grudge Match on my list to read shortly.

First I've read of Pine, so guess what? Wish list just got longer!

5 full and shiny stars (but I did write 4 first!)

I love it when the family is truly accepting and supporting to whatever the MCs are going through in the story. That is what the Lombardis are all about whereas Athena, the Matriarch, heads the family after her husband died five years ago. Even when their father was alive, the four Lombardi brothers were accepted and supported.

Capone has been too busy growing their restaurant and taking care of the family that he has been neglecting himself, especially his love life. He has no love life. His father told him to take care of the family before he died.

Fuller left his hometown as soon as he was able, left the farm his father hoped he would managed one day. He was never accepted by his father for who he is, and his mother never did anything to support him as well. So as soon as he was able, he left and signed up for the police academy.

When the youngest Lombardi, Brando, got the idea to start a matchmaking service, his first client is his older brother, Capone. And he found the perfect match for him, Fuller Sims, the very attractive Detective of the Ogunquit Police Department.

Capone and Fuller found themselves on their first date, and both were surprised at how good a time they had. But from there stemmed their old insecurities. Luckily they have family and friends who are constantly barraging them with questions and giving them advises.

These two, Capone and Fuller, are two of a kind. They are both very responsible men, they always take care of other people to the point of neglecting themselves. I love them. I love their story and I cannot wait for all the Lombardi brothers to find their own perfect partners.

I am such a fan of Pandora Pine’s books. She writes some amazing characters and has a talent for creating families by both blood and found association. These are some of my favorites to read too. The Lombardi family has been running an Italian restaurant and feeding the town of Ogunquit for years, but the last five have been without the patriarch of the family. Capone, the oldest brother, has spent all of his time and energy keeping the family legacy alive and holding his family together. But he is tired and ready for something more in his life. Fuller is a detective with the OPD and tired of being alone. Enter the youngest Lombardi, Brando, with the idea to start a matchmaking agency. Fuller and Capone are his first match and the one he hopes to use as his first success. This story has all the love and laughter, as well as stubbornness, that you would expect from a big Italian family. And don’t forget the food. Food is love to the Lombardi family. I am so in love with all of this big loud family. These characters were so well written and I could feel their freaks and their hopes and dreams for the future. There is no angst here, just two men trying to feel their way through dating and hoping to find a happily ever after. Fuller may feel on the outside of this family but that won’t last long, not if Brando and Athena Lombardi have anything to say about it!

Love this new series

I love this first book in a new series by Pandora Pine. She’s moved a bit north, from Massachusetts to Maine, for this series about four brothers finding love.

I love the way the book starts and the way the matchmaking scheme evolves. Pine does a great job of character development, not only of the MCs but also of several of the secondary characters, via the story arc. So much information, which flows smoothly via the story, gives us insight into several of the characters. These characters have become real to me. That’s always a sign of superior writing to me.

It’s a coincidence that I started reading this book on a weekend I was actually supposed to be in Maine. But with the frigid weather and a conflict I had to cancel. So I got my Maine fix via this book. Pine does a good job conveying the setting and I felt like I was visiting some familiar places. I’m going to have the same problem with Ogunquit now that I have with Salem…expecting to see people and places from Pine’s wonderful books!

The story arc moves well and the relationship development seems realistic. I adored the family element of the story and the repeated message about being involved in and caring about your community. I’m looking forward to the remaining brothers’ stories.

Forced

I feel lied to. I thought this would be the sort of story where the couple has so much passion that they argue. These characters don't have much chemistry. They don't kiss on the first date. They don't have anything in common. The conflict is all the characters not being sure they're ready for this relationship.

In addition to the lack of chemistry, the characters feel one dimensional. Capone is the responsible one. Brando is directionless. Nero is the actor. Fio is shy. Their dad is a really good dad. Their mom is a really good mom. They're stereotypical Italians. The love interest is a police officer from a broken family.

The plot also feels forced and poorly researched. I know from personal experience that an air bag will not deploy at 10 mph. I wouldn't expect injuries at that speed. There were several other places where I was shouting "Really?"

If this story hadn't been written by one of my favorite authors, I wouldn't have finished it.

But 2 stars, so what was good? I wish a had a dad as cool as Capone's. The family dynamics are well done. The friendship between the cop friends, too. I will probably check out later books in the series to see if they improve.

I was so excited to see this new series out! I loved this book so much! I had an absolute blast while reading it. It was funny, witty, entertaining and so so sweet! Capone is carrying the weight of the whole Lombardi family on his shoulders and has completely put his life on hold to take care of his family and keep his family restaurant afloat. His father requested this of him while on his death bed. Capone felt as though he had to keep his promise to his father since it was his final wishes. Fuller is a detective who has avoided relationships for years due to a bad experience in his last relationship. He has avoided love and emotions but is now growing tired of one night stands. When Capone’s little brother, Brando, decides to try his hand in matchmaking skills he comes up with the perfect pairing of Capone and Fuller. Of course these two men were resistant at first but this is the intriguing, funny and sweet love story about this unlikely pair.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

I’m a huge sucker for these series with different brothers with different issues. This one did not disappoint. I was thrilled that it was the first book in the “Amore Matchmaking” series. Also, what makes this one endearing for me is the fact that the main characters are in their late 30’s - early 40’s. Nothing can beat that for me! I’m envious of the Lombardi family! What wouldn’t I do without the protection of brothers and the love of the matriarch, especially an Italian family like this! I think this series would make an awesome TV movie series!!!

This book focuses on the feelings between Capone, the family restaurant chef and the town’s detective. It all starts with Detective Fuller Simms who pulled Capone Lombardi over for speeding but was let go because Capone had fresh seafood in the trunk of his vehicle. Later that night, Capone’s brother, Brando had a brilliant idea (one too many by his brothers’ claim) that he was going to start a new matchmaking business and his first client was Capone. Guess who Brando matched Capone with? None other than Fuller!!!! Do they get together? There were two huge events that makes one of them question their feelings. Please pick up the book and read! I’m glad I did!

I really enjoyed this engaging book with its two likeable mature aged main characters. Although, being older doesn’t stop Fuller (40) and Capone (35) from having some relationship problems. The dynamics of the Lombardi family changed with the death of their patriarch and Capone primarily focused on the promises he made to his dying father for the next few years whilst Fuller was over one night stands and ready to settle down.

A match making scheme brings them together and they both feel that initial spark. Unfortunately there’s a couple of issues that need to be resolved on the way to their HEA, not enough to derail the relationship but they do cause some angsty moments. Fuller and Capone do show their maturity in how these situations are successfully resolved. The chemistry between them slowly bubbles away just below the surface and eventually leads to some sweet and steam to balance out the angsty times.

We are also introduced to the three Lombardi brother side characters and they sure do add to the entertainment value, especially since Fio owns a wonderfully wicked goat! I look forward to what the future instalments hold for the remaining Lombardi brothers.

Being the oldest son of an Italian family, after the patriarch dies isn’t easy. There’s his father's restaurant to run and his mother and three brothers to look out for. In turn, Capone has had no personal life of his own.

When he is baby brother Brando (the wild child) decides his latest venture is going to be Amore Matchmaking, he sets his sights on Capone’s love life.

Those sights include Fuller, a local police detective, who’s kept his love life simple since his ex turned a little too obsessive.

Now, these two have the town invested in their love life, not to mention a busy restaurant to run, and a town to protect. It’s a lot to contend with, and they will have to figure out if they can take the heat.

This is a fun story, with a boisterous Italian family in the middle of everything, and some drama to make sure these two really have what it takes to have the happy ever after.

The beginning is always a good place to start. Capone promised his Dad on his death bed, he'd look after his Mother, Athena, his 3 younger brothers, Nero, Fiorello, Brando and his Dad's legacy business. He fulfilled his obligation, well but was saddened to realize he was lonely. Detective Fuller was successful, but lonely. He was feeling his age, having turned 40 on Christmas Day. His partner, Mason has a solution for Fuller's dating drought. Capone's brother, Brando has a solution for Capone's drought and a way to get his matchmaking business off to a promising start. Will Capone and Fuller go along with the plan? Will they move beyond their interest in each other to start more? Can they navigate misunderstandings and miscommunications? Can they get out of their own way in time to look for happiness? Good story, realistic from the last moments Capone spent with his Dad, Vinnie to the end of the book. This story, brings us the dynamics good and troubled of a good family of amazing men and Athena. Nicely done. Great cover art. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
