24-year-old Haneul Yeon both dislikes and envies Bunhong Jin, the girl who was mean to her in middle school and a popular idol who happens to be close to Haneul’s favorite idol, Robin. Haneul’s dream of switching places with her becomes a reality when the two of them end up swapping bodies after an accident. Haneul is overjoyed to be an idol and to see Robin frequently, but does she have what it takes to live the life of an idol?
I love Chan Im so freaking much. He stole the story for me. I mean, I really liked Bunhong and Haneul once I got to know them better, and their character growth was great, but Chan was hot, caring, and perfect boyfriend material. I would so date him. Anyway, beyond that, I got into this story around chapter 20 of 84, so about a quarter of the way through. It had a fun, interesting, and at times heart wrenching plot, with compelling characters and well done character growth, as well as humor, sadness, and a satisfying ending. 4.5 stars!
(I accidentally deleted my first draft of this review (which was probably more authentic), oh well)
I was immediately attracted to Lilac 200% because of the ART. I mean, have you seen it? With a diverse color palette and cute designs, the art definitely made this an incredibly fun and pleasing read. Plus, the outfits were out of this world--super styish! Uiyoung is incredibly talented, and that can be seen with every panel. Second, when I saw what the story was about, I knew I had to read it. I mean, a body swap between two estranged friends, and one of them is a celebrity? I was on Chapter 1 before I knew it (and I proceeded to complete the rest in day--I've been starved for good, bingeable reads).
Anyways, to summarize the above, if there is a book (rather, Webtoon) that you SHOULD judge by its cover, it's this one! This read is as interesting and compelling as it shows itself to be.
Lilac 200% is about the fragility of friendships, but also the resilience of the individual. It's about the family we find along the way, and the challenges that we endure with the help of our loved ones. It's about understanding oneself and wanting to change for the better. I think character development often falls flat, especially in Webtoons, but Lilac 200% has a beautiful character arc for both our main characters Bunhong Jin and Haneul Yeon, and we see how their growth happens only when their two lives become inextricably intertwined as a result of the body swap. Additionally, I love how no character is perfect (except maybe Chan Im, but I'll let you refer to the other reviews to see how great he is 😁). We see their flaws in a jarring manner, which is a refreshing take on the can-do-no-wrong MC. But it's because that they have these areas of improvement that we come to appreciate their growth by the final chapter even more.
I really enjoyed Lilac 200% because at its core, it's a story of friendship and empathy. The way Uiyong utilizes the body swap and parallels between the two's lives--an idol facing the industry's pressures and a girl surrounded by loving family and friends--to illustrate the nuances of relationships was really nice. Really, the story takes "put yourself in their shoes" to the most literal level. I was rooting for the two girls all the way as they faced loss, were driven by greed, and made mistakes.
I don't want to spoil the story too much, but what made it really beautiful was the growth and maturity of each character. I gave this 4 stars because, in my opinion, the romance could have been executed better. It seemed like it was stuffed in as an after-thought of sorts just to check off a box. Honestly, the story would have been as impactful even without the romance (though Chan Im. must. stay.). The romance felt a little out of place for me, making the story not everything it could be.
To close, go read this story if you want a little emotional rollercoaster and a taste of people being people in the most human way--filled with mistakes, happiness, gratitude, and hope. At around 85 chapters, it definitely won't take up too much of your time. Take a break from your fantasy isekais and dungeon master reads to read Lilac 200%!
(I'm still waiting for that Jade x Juna side story). (This review became much longer than I intended it to oops).
OMG Im Chan will forever be the best ml for me. I love him so much he actually carried the entire story, though I did grow to love Hanuel and Bunhong. Even if you have your doubts give it a chance. The authors next work, A Whirlwind Campus Affair, is also very good I would recommend!!!!!
