Back home, she's determined to get her hands on Midsummer House, the dream property for her holiday cottage business—even if that means giving in to the slightly odd request by the eccentric owner that she house-sit for three months while she takes a trip around Europe to make her mind up about selling.

High-flying financial trader Rob Jones is at an unexpected loose end when his long-lost aunt Frances calls looking for some advice. He hasn't been back to visit since the tragedy which cut the threads that bound his family together, but deciding to make amends, he heads to the Highlands to stay at her place and help out with some repairs…

With both having a reason to stay, it's a battle of wills to see who'll give in and move out first. Rob realises that Charlotte is determined nobody should know about their one night stand—but with the undeniable attraction between them, how easy is it going to be?

As the village of Applemore casts a welcoming spell on Rob, he starts to wonder if he's got his priorities in life all wrong… but if he stays put, where does that leave Charlotte's plans for Midsummer House?

achtergrond beter leert kennen.

Midsummer House is the latest instalment in Rachael Lucas’s Applemore Bay series. This book focuses on Charlotte, who has an out of character one night stand with Rob, who then appears in Applemore.

It was lovely to return to Applemore, and see how all the characters are getting on, and to spend more time with Charlotte, who I’ve always liked. You don’t need to have read any of the other books in the series to enjoy this one, however.

I also enjoyed exploring a new location, Midsummer House, which was a delightful place, with some animals that were great characters themselves!

This book was really relaxing to read, with things moving at a gentle pace. However, it kept my interest too, I was drawn into the story and the concerns of the characters.

Overall, this was a lovely, relaxing story, that felt like a pleasant summer’s day. I’m looking forward to Christmas at Applemore, which is the next book in the series.

I was given a free copy of this book, my opinions are my own.

Charlotte Fraser has always been the sensible one of the four Fraser siblings. She was only ten when their mother unexpectedly left them and she became the unofficial mother of the family, with help from Joan, their housekeeper.

Now she’s an adult and on a business trip she steps completely out of character and has a one-night-stand with a very handsome man. Afterward she slips away before he’s awake and goes back to her real life. Back at home at Applemore, she agrees to house and animal sit for an elderly neighbor. She’s always wanted to buy the neighbor’s beautiful old home, Midsummer House, and the neighbor tells her she will sell her the house when she returns if Charlotte still wants it after living there. Charlotte rents her own house out but when she moves in to Midsummer House, she’s shocked to find the owner’s nephew has moved in. And he’s none other than her one-night-stand.

This book can be read as a standalone but it’s really more fun to start with the first book, The Winter Cottage, and get to know the Fraser’s and the other people in the village. I read the last book first and was a little confused about who all the characters were so recommend you start with the first one.

This was really a three and half star book for me. I had a hard time liking Charlotte. She was so afraid of letting Rob know she was attracted to him that she was downright mean. She loves her family dearly but won’t let them get very close to her. And she often lets her temper influence her decisions without getting the facts. Rob was a great love interest, though, and there was chemistry between them but there would have been more if Charlotte had been different.

Overall I liked this series a lot and I’m a bit sad I’ve finished it. I felt like I’d been to the Scottish Highlands by the time I finished all of the books.

This was my first read by this author, and it certainly won’t be my last one!
Such a gorgeous setting and lovely characters, I was soon drawn into Charlotte’s fascinating story.
I loved the slow burn romance, and I adored seeing how Charlotte relaxed into her situation, becoming her own person in the process.
Such a lovely community too, I’m eager to catch up with all the previous books now!

Lovely Heart Warming Story

I am really enjoying Escape to the Highlands. Midsummer House was very Enjoyable. They can be read as stand alone but reading the first book introduces you to the characters that appear in the next book. I do wish there was a little preface at the beginning of each book as a brief reminder of the characters but that is a small thing. Looking forward to the next book.

I raced through this one to get to the Christmas instalment, and now I'm paying for that with only a sketchy memory of the story. This one is about Charlotte Fraser (eldest sister?), who runs a successful short term accommodation business in Applemore, in the Scottish Highlands. When the possibility of buying Midsummer House comes along, Charlotte is keen to add it to her portfolio. She arranges with the owner to house-sit the property for a few months, mainly looking after the animals but also getting a feel for the place. But at the last minute she discovers she's going to be sharing the place with the owner's nephew, Rob. Uncharacteristically, it turns out that Charlotte has some history with Rob...

A nice story that rounds out the Fraser tale just a little more. Polly Fraser is up next!

Tropes:
🏘 Small-town setting
🛏️ Forced proximity
🔥 Slow burn
💕 Closed-door romance

A gorgeous new story in the Applemore series from Rachael Lucas. It’s been lovely catching up with the Fraser family again, this time with Charlotte as the main character as we follow her dreams of turning Midsummer House into the perfect holiday retreat. I loved the interactions between her and Rob, and seeing Charlotte concentrate on her own life rather than worrying about everyone else was a nice touch.
Rachael has again written a beautiful story, full of warm and welcoming characters and the house itself sounded perfectly idyllic with the cheeky animals thrown in to keep Charlotte on her toes.

Book 3 of the series has bossy Charlotte attempting to get a woman to sell her house so Charlotte can buy it and be independent of the Applemore estate. Her chance encounter with a wealthy and good looking man turns her world upside-down. Highland romance with attempted animal escapes is entertaining reading with familiar characters in a familiar setting.

Charlotte Fraser admits she is a control freak and a compulsive list maker. But one night in the city she steps right out of her comfort zone. Then she returns to her village and her siblings in the Scottish Highlands. There she is determined to acquire Midsummer House. Her plan is to make it the dream property for her holiday cottage business. Can she convince Frances, a solitary person to sell it to her? Frances comes up with the condition. Charlotte must house sit there for three months while Frances is away on a trip deciding if she will sell Midsummer House or not. That means looking after the animals and bees on the property. Charlotte is not thrilled but thinking it might be the best way to get in the owner’s good books and convince Frances to sell to her, she agrees, reluctantly. So the lets her own cottage out and heads to Midsummer House.
Rob Jones has struck some issues at work in the finance trading area. So when the opportunity comes up he sets out, at his aunt’s request, to help her. It is the first time he has been back for years. The place holds many memories for him, not all good. Maybe it is time he deals with them? When Charlotte arrives at Midsummer she finds Rob already there. Both have reasons to stay. Who will give in and leave?
This is the third book in the Applemore Bay series, and I have read and enjoyed the previous 2, so felt confident going into this one. It sucked me in again quite easily. I love the relationships between the Fraser siblings and how different, Charlotte, Lachlan, Beth and Polly are to, and with, each other. Also love the way gossip flares like flames in a small community. Charlotte and Rob are interesting and there are a number of other quirky characters, the least of which is Geoffrey the goat who chews on anything in his vicinity. He is also an escape artist more worthy of the name Houdini. He provides humorous moments.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Perhaps a bit predictable in some ways but such a fun read, it didn’t matter. That’s the warmth of the characters and the place. Did I mention a beautiful setting as well? A lovely read. It could probably be read as a stand alone but better still, why not start with book I and get to know the characters and the place as I did?

Wonderful

I just loved reading about charlottes adventures especially lotti's adventures. Charlottes so driven in what she does and has always found security in her lists and lists of lists. It been a great journey following her visits to Midsummer house and her meetings with francis. Charlottes had her sights set on owning midsummer house for a while so when Francis asks her to look after the animals and the house ,and to talk to the bees daily she is excited and starts planning in her head what she wants to do to the house when its hers. The day francis is leaving to go on her travels she says goodbye to charlotte . Charlotte is at midsummer house taking her belongings in and rob arrives and realises who she is and is shocked. He explains he's staying at midsummer house to do some running repairs and she thinks he must be staying at a hotel but he says no he's staying at midsummer house. Charlotte explains she is looking after the house and the animals while francis is away. Then an email comes through to charlotte explaining the arrangements are. They seem to rub along each doing what they are supposed to be. Rob slowly but surely falls in love with Applemore and decides to help the local Applemore Hotel out by investing in it to allow the owner to extend the restaurant and spruce up the bedrooms etc. Francis makes a decision about midsummer house that upsets charlotte a lot so she decides to leave midsummer house and back to Applemore house and stay with lochland and rilla. They are both stubborn and dont talk to each other until they are pushed by their freinds and her family. The ending is great and leaves it open for the next book.

This is the 3rd book in the lovely series set in the Highlands of Scotland in Applemore Bay. The first four books centre around the Fraser siblings, all brought up in Applemore House, and all work in the village.

Charlotte runs a holiday let business on the Applemore Estate. She wants to build her own portfolio and has her heart set on Midsummer House. Frances, the current owner, decides to let Charlotte house sit while she's away. If all goes well, Frances will sell to Charlotte.

However, things don't go smoothly, Rob, a nephew of Frances, shows up. He is also house sitting for his aunt and will take on some much needed repairs. He has his own reasons for escaping Edinburgh and the high-powered finance he currently works in.

What villagers don't know is Charlotte and Rob have history!

I loved this book, I love the series. Its a series based around family, their relationships, and their lives. Each book is a standalone story, but they are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline.

I can't wait to read the next book about the youngest sister, Polly.

I read this book whilst recovering from surgery and it was just what I needed to read, at that time! I thoroughly enjoyed being back in Applemore Bay and hearing Charlotte's story.

Charlotte has a one-night stand with a fella called Rob, and doesn't give it much more thought - until Rob turns up in Applemore Bay! Somehow, she has to put up with him, whilst ignoring their mutual spark AND not letting her siblings know what happened before. You know how it goes in a small town and especially with nosy sisters!

This was a charming story and I enjoyed getting re-acquainted with characters from the previous books in this series, although this book could easily be read as a standalone. I would recommend that you read all the books in the series to date though, as they are just lovely :)

Looking forward to the next book in the series, very much.

4.5 stars from me.

Back to the Applemore Bay series with book three, which focuses on Charlotte Fraser. While I liked this story, I prefer the first two books in the series. I don't know if it was just my KU copy, but there were several typos. For example, Rob introduced himself as Rob XX. Another character had XX for a last name, which made me think the author added the last names after writing the series and the copy editor missed these placeholders. There were other places where a character was referred to by the wrong name, which made for some confusion.

That said, I liked Charlotte and Rob's romance. Unwilling housemates is a good trope. Charlotte was very stubborn, but in the end, both she and Rob figured out what they wanted from life. (Each other, of course.) I find the series is still charming and look forward to reading the next book.

Better than the last Lucas book I read

Still has very woke themes
Cancer, LGBTabc+ gay couple running the cafe and who is Mel and Fiona - let’s edit the typo and call Mel Mal for Malcolm 😁
I wonder if that’s what the editor suggested only the other way 👀

Charlotte was a funny character and I’m not sure it was the workaholic tendencies. She had a bit of everything PTSD from the death of her o ok agents. Not inheriting the business she’d established was a big odd, subdividie the block and give her the land for crying out loud.

Jack being given the property from his aunt was lovely. Such a fantastic gift and what he did with that gift was amazing. That’s was a liveyoart of the story that was skimmed over at the end of the book
Charlotte carried on like a pork chop!
