“Kana Cold. Secrets on the Island of Hell” by KC. Hunter is the fourth instalment in the “Kana Cold Paranormal Thriller Series”, while simultaneously marking the start to the second arc-story-trilogy in the series, which makes also make it an adequate introduction to the series, for all those still not acquainted with Kana Cold. Another, even better option, would be to fetch the “Kana Cold Series” a compendium volume, that offers all previous four books in the series (three full-length instalments as well as the prequel), and read it along this new instalment.

Kana Cold (FMC) is an independent paranormal investigation, a Harvard graduate, highly intelligence and social recluse, whose love belong to cars and bikes, solving mysteries, investigating ancient secret societies, and fighting demons, who never felt the need to get any hero’s laurels, being more comfortable working behind the scenes.

“Secrets on the Island of Hell” brings Kana to Hashima (shima>/i> is Japanese for ‘island’), a real place situated in Nagasaki province in Japan, which bears the nickname of Guankajima (Battleship Island) due to her presented the aerial view, and whose abandonment after WWII has gained the less official nickname of “Island of the Ghost” (by the way movie goers would remember Hashima industrial ruins from the movie “Skyfall”). Hashima is not only an UNESCO world heritage site, but the perfect backdrop for Kana’s next adventure. Those acquainted with Hashima’s story will be pleased with KC Hunter’s version of the myths. And for all those new to the issue, just let the story flow knowing that Hunter’s story is just stunning good.

The “Kana Cold Paranormal Adventure Series” is an intelligent, paranormal mystery series, which walks the line between mystery and horror (sometimes lighter than others) to perfection, and presents a world behind our own, that for all its fictionality could very much be real; sometimes, like in this present case much more than others.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Kana is broken out of prison to assist on a job and discovers her old crew is gone except for Anastasia and what is left of AJ. She manages to stop what they planned before distancing from Anastasia. Kana intends to find AJ but is kidnapped first. I find this series very intriguing and look forward to the next installment.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and unbiased review.
I have previously only read the short prequel to this series. There were several references to previous events, enough that I didn't feel too lost or unable to understand the story. It was an action filled and convoluted story line that keeps you guessing, but I found it very enjoyable. I believe that there is a Japanese folk tale/story that this is based on... but I'm not familiar with it so have no opinion on this representation. It does involve demons, and the supernatural but I didn't find it too "horrific" I don't like horror fiction of any kind! It wraps up this part of the story but does end on a cliffhanger tying into the next book in the series.

This is book four of the Kana Cold Paranormal Adventure series and catches up with Kana, three years into her twenty year jail term, where she is picked out for extra punishment in isolation, for her crimes. She killed Professor Granger, but it was the killing of the Senator’s cousin that is getting her the special treatment. She comes under the attention of the queen bee in her section of the prison and is pulled into her clutches, for her specialist skills in dealing with spirits and the paranormal. The tunnel which allows the queen bee’s illicit goods in and out of the prison has recently had some issues and resulted in none of her people wanting to go back into the tunnel and left one person dead. Kana isn’t told exactly what is inside the tunnel, other than something that is stopping them and gets led out of her cell by a corrupt prison officer. She is led to the hidden entrance of the tunnel, down in the laundry, to find herself facing a challenge that could send her mad and brings a lot of truths to the fore, as she must suffer a game played by an old being, to see if she is worthy of passage. If she manages to clear the access to the tunnel, then she will be brought into the prison break organised for the following evening.
It seems someone was very keen to get Kana out of prison, for a specialised job on Hashima Island, known as the Island of Hell, where thousands died and no one ever goes. It is believed to be haunted by all those who perished there, but something else is going on and a huge earthquake recently originated there which was felt in Japan and further afield. The jailbreak leads her to a very wealthy man and a secretive mission to the island, as part of a team to stop something that is happening. Others are already on the island and the team she is placed within, includes a former friend and some infamous others, none of whom she trusts. If she helps the billionaire get to whatever it was he wants, he will clear her records, leaving her to be able to live and work anywhere in the future. Members of the supposedly disbanded Thule Society are looking to tap into an enormous power that has lived under the island for thousands of years. Hordes of demons are doing the dirty work for their masters, whilst Kana and the team she is supposed to be with, fracture and betray her at almost every step. A lost partner has been resurrected and is being used for nefarious reasons by those already on the island. Kana and a former ally, find themselves being used as pawns and only just managing to get off the island at the last minute, leaving Kana in the hands of an old enemy and a cliffhanger ending. Lots of paranormal goings on, right from the start of the book, with shocking scenes at the end with the Oni and the being they wish to us to take its powers. A difficult time for Kana and not her usual fare. I received an ARC copy of this book form BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Destruction follows her.

So I like this series and it is a bit on the dark side. Kana Cold is known for the results she gets and the destruction that comes with her. She has been in prison for the past three years and has just come to terms with the fact that the one person she loves the most is lost to her and that it is her fault.

She gets broken out of the prison only to find no one will tell her anything other than they need her skills for a mission. Kana is great at figuring out where paranormal spirits and artifacts are, as well as understanding things about them that no one else does.

As always, the Shingami talks to her just before something bad is going to happen. In this book makes several appearances, taunting her with clues about the misfortunes she is about to experience. Just when you she is about to give up on everything, something always pulls her back, making her fight on or find answers to the questions she has been asking that no one is providing.

Yhis is a good book if you like the paranormal world and the mysteries it holds.

I love this series - it is unique, action packed and suspense filled. Book 4 continues Kana's exciting journey. It grabs you from page 1 and is captivating to the very end. KC Hunter's writing is detailed enough that I could easily visualize the setting and story taking place. The paranormal entities Kana faces along the way are unusual, same with the powers that others exhibit. I am very excited to see where the Author takes Kana next

This book was great because it gave so much background history on the main character's life before the one we see all the time in the books. As well, it took the reader on a grand adventure. I can't wait to see where K.C. Hunter takes us next with the story of Kana Cold.

Excellent read

Excellent read. Non stop action. Fast paced. Kana is in prison for murder. Will she get out and if she does what is her mission? You have to read to find out.
