Melanie Dobson has eloquently written an emotive story of fictional characters immersed in accurate facts of America history. Imagining myself living in Virginia during the 1780’s, was easy to comprehend how confusing one’s choice of loyal political stance would be. Identifying to any party publically could mean the difference in one’s life or death, and possible seizure or destruction of the home and properties that were God’s blessings. Lydia Caswell’s family are staunch Loyalists, but as in any war, all involved are absorbed in winning the peace; or – solely control.
Insecurity of what the future held….and trust of others, including friends, was always in doubt. This story is of great intrigue about strong characters who believed in what they were doing. It had humor which is always an indication of skilled writing to lighten chapters full of pain and anguish. Romance was not lacking, nor the longing and prayers of hope for those loved ones who left home to fight to return alive. Not knowing where family members were or what might have happened to them was a haunt to all for years at a time. Melanie Dobson is indeed an intricate weaver of several stories intermingled like puzzle pieces that paint a vivid picture when all the pieces come together. The espionage plot is well planned and created an attention-grabbing page turner for this reader.
The women characters in this story about factual jeopardy made me proud of my gender. Each one beautiful in their unique personalities – sensitive, afraid and yet fearless, tender, smart and even little sister was likeable in her own way. Ms Dobson has given each character, male or female, a unique personality quite fitting to that time era – all believable. Most importantly, redemption, reconciliation and belief in the freedom to worship God was shown with such conviction, that only a true believer in our Lord could have written these words to so glorify Him that blesses all. Most of the characters had a relationship with the Lord, and the decision was left open to those that professed no belief.
You might note that I didn’t mention actual names or situations in this review. It would be hard to tell you about one person, one situation….without leading into another. Ms Dobson has written a supreme story with a firm foundation of history that takes you into Caswell Hall as a guest watching the action as though in a movie theatre. Even the music can be heard and the tension felt – a real experience! Yes, I felt this story emotionally and hope you will get The Courier of Caswell Hall to meet all these characters yourself. You will be giving the compliments to Melanie Dobson and the glory to God.

I enjoyed this story, though I don't think it was as strong as some of Melanie Dobson's other work. I liked both Lydia and Nathan and their work towards freedom.
I think my favourite character was Sarah. Even though she was not a main character, I appreciated her 'gumption' and determination to do what was right, no matter the cost.

Imagine you are the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, a British loyalist, during the Revolutionary War.
One night during your evening walk by the river, while dreaming about a return to simpler times, to days of peace, you hear a groan.
At first you think your mind is playing tricks on you in the darkness. Surely the sound you hear must be the wind, or an animal trapped in the branches, or even water driving a log through the leaves.
You turn to walk away, but then you hear it – the unmistakable sound of a man’s voice – then silence. Your heart stops – you want to flee – but you cannot turn away. You look up and then, you see them:
British ships sailing down the river, and a wounded man in the water.
Who is this man? Where do his loyalties lie?

I didn't know how many Melanie Dobson books I had, but when I searched my Kindle library, I pulled them up and am reading them all now. This one so far is my favorite.
I know little about the Revolutionary War...well history in general was never my favorite subject. But as I read a book like this I learn and am entertained. And this one was wonderful. Well written characters and incredible writing about historical accounts that I can often find boring. Ms. Dobson brings it all alive, and will make the reader barely able to put the book down.
Several stories going on at once, but the two main ones are of two neighbor women, who, unbeknownst to the other, end up patriot sympathizers, even though their families have remained loyal to the crown. Both have brothers they haven't seen for years who decided to fight for freedom from England, and both pass letters to a courier who brings the information to General Washington.
Tragedies happen, as is common during wars, and you see them pick up the pieces and contInue.
The one constant is the courier who was found by Lydia near death with a message he was supposed to pass on to the other messenger (the neighbor, Sarah). She nursed him back to health and grew fond of him, and he learns to trust her, however, because Nathan was a patriot, and her father was not, she had to keep his presence there a secret. After he recovered enough to leave he was nearly caught by the British soldiers that knew him and would have shot him on the spot.
The rest of the book is his dangerous adventures with the messages and his growing fondness for Lydia, even though he knew and was good friends with the man she was supposed to be promised to.
Wonderful story and, this doesn't happen often, but I'd recommend this book to everyone.

I have a lot of feelings about this book.
The Good:
I loved this book! After a shaky start I wasn't sure I would enjoy it, but I ended up loving it more than I ever thought I would. Lydia, Nathan, Sarah, and Grayson were all incredibly interesting characters to read bout. I enjoyed Lydia's mother's silent strength the most, though. Sometimes it's those sort of characters that affect you more than the protagonist. The prologue and epilogue were really nice additions, as well. I liked how they were both after Nathan and Lydia's marriage.
And kudos to Dobson for taking risks! Sometimes I think authors in the Christian fiction genre stay too close to the HEA promise. While there was a HEA ending, along the way Dobson definitely pulled the envelope and tugged at the reader's heartstrings.
The Bad:
The beginning is really slow. So slow I nearly stopped reading. Also, Dobson's writing style took awhile for me to get used to. It's not bad - but sometimes she uses a lot of unnecessary dialogue tags that get in the way of the prose. After I got used to her style, though, I greatly enjoyed the novel!

Very good
I bought this book when it was on sale and I am so glad I did. The story was good, sad in places, hard line others, but with a happy ending. I felt like I was reading the history of many families torn apart by the revolutionary war.
I loved the twists and turns this story took. It kept me guessing and tuning pages.

This book blew me away. Being a history nerd and taking a few history courses this semester at community college myself; Dobson transported me back to the early years the fight for independence in America between the British and English.
Dobson's writing had me by the prologue--which usually doesn't happen for me. Still, there was so much going in the prologue alone that it made me want to know how those characters got to that moment in time. By the end of chapter 1 I knew I had to keep reading. I finished this book all in one setting. It was seriously that great.
What I really loved about this book was that romance was not number one. Even though I consider myself to be a hopeless romantic sometimes it is refreshing to have strong heroine characters that make decisions for themselves and not for the men they want to please in hopes of marriage. I want to point out though that there is romance and it did make my heart flutter. It was just refreshing to read of two characters ready to put the independence of their country first and their personal lives second. That sacrifice I feel made them stronger in how they felt about each other.
The first character we meet is Lydia Caswell who comes from a wealthy Virgina plantation owning family of Loyalists. Lydia is twenty-five and has had an estranged engagement to Seth Hammond (a rebel) for the past five years (which later the two become friends instead). One night during a night walk she hears a moaning sound of pain coming from the riverbank near Caswell Hall. She finds it to be coming from a man. Taking any sort of person into her care and not knowing what side he aids could put Lydia's family in danger, but she takes him in anyways knowing she couldn't let him die. By saving this man's life, her life changes forever. I really liked Lydia. She was a strong woman figuring out what she believed in and what side she supported-- the Crown or Independence?
As the story progress the British and Continental armies are waging war in the year 1781, and an unlikely spy discovers freedom and love in midst of all that is going on.
By nursing Nathan back to health-- the man Lydia found-- who is a Patriot, and also an enemy, forms a bond with Lydia. Lydia's sympathy slowing grows towards America and when British officers come to the plantation it's the final push Lydia needs to know she must help Nathan escape.
Lydia then takes on the former job of her friend Sarah Hammond which is to deliver secret messages to the Patriots in Williamsburg. She soon learns of a plot to assassinate General Washington, and Lydia knows she must risk her life in order to alert Nathan before it can be carried out.
There was so much depth and richness to this book that I felt like I was watching an HBO series of the history of America like John Adams or even the move Lincoln. Dobson does a fantastic job at creating a plot that involves powerful women that helped form the country we know call America and its history.
If you love history this book is something you should add to your 'MUST READ' list. If you love spies, intrigue with a hint of romance this is also a must for you. If you just love a good read this is a must for you. Overall, I think it's a must read.

The Revolutionary War and spies! This is the recipe that Melanie Dobson has created for us in “The Courier of Caswell Hall”. Up until this point the colonies had never cried out for independence before so this was a premier event. Not everyone was keen on the idea of independence, after all it was treason and punishable by hanging. So there are the Loyalists to The Crown, which promises security but maintains English oppression) and The Rebels who promise freedom with the possibility of hanging. Lydia’s family are Loyalists but she manages to fall in love with a Rebel and then acts as a rebel spy. Danger, action, adventure suspense thriller all rolled up in a very exciting read. On top of all of this there is the romance. Ms. Dobson has given us a story that belongs up there with the terrific movies that have come before. These are wonderful characters that live and breathe on the pages and you care deeply for them. This book does not disappoint at all. I enjoyed it and I am sure you will also.

The Revolutionary War and spies! This is the recipe that Melanie Dobson has created for us in “The Courier of Caswell Hall”. Up until this point the colonies had never cried out for independence before so this was a premier event. Not everyone was keen on the idea of independence, after all it was treason and punishable by hanging. So there are the Loyalists to The Crown, which promises security but maintains English oppression) and The Rebels who promise freedom with the possibility of hanging. Lydia’s family are Loyalists but she manages to fall in love with a Rebel and then acts as a rebel spy. Danger, action, adventure suspense thriller all rolled up in a very exciting read. On top of all of this there is the romance. Ms. Dobson has given us a story that belongs up there with the terrific movies that have come before. These are wonderful characters that live and breathe on the pages and you care deeply for them. This book does not disappoint at all. I enjoyed it and I am sure you will also.

Lydia.s father was uncertain how he would get his large estate harvested with the few that were left to work it, even his girls had to help or they would not have enough to live on for another year.
Lydia Caswell lived in a plantation (Caswell Hall) near the James river and at the beginning our our story ,one night as she looksout her window she sees british ships going by on the river. "Father said they had left Virginia,what is happening-why are they here", she went outside to get a closer look and while walking heard noises that led her to a man half frozen to death on the bank- in her heart she knew she must save him and this she did with the help of Elisha (slave). They hid him away on the grounds and feared he would be found when a group from the british army came to their home and stayed making it their headquarters. Lydia's parents were believers of the King and felt their property would be saved if they helped.
Lydia never knew she was harboring a spy and had put them into much danger by helping, this was only the beginning of changes that would be made in her life and the lives of friends and family.
Melanie takes us back to a time in history that some may have forgot and shows the bravery of the men and women in that period.

This book was so well written, had so much historical accuracy, and was so interesting that I just flowed through it. It was such and interesting read. I wasn’t that familiar with the Revolutionary War, but this book changed some of that. It may be a work of fiction, but the research was so well done. I actually felt like I was right there where all of this was happening. It had a wonderful cast of characters. The plot was great. Just a great read all around. If you are interested in the Revolutionary War then this is a book for you, even if you aren’t a Revolutionary War buff, this is a great read that I highly recommend. Great job Melanie!

This story was more of a historical novel than a historical romance, but it was still a good book. There were two different stories that came together at the end. This story had its sad moments and it's enthralling ones. It wasn't my favorite book by Melanie, and I love many of her books, but it was still worth reading. If you love fiction set during the Revolutionary War and tales of bravery, spying, and such, you will enjoy this book.

Nathan ❤️ Lydia
Fascinating facts (yes, I Googled several of them). This book gives us a different look at how the foundation of our country was laid. General George Washington had quite a cadre of intelligence gathering and most unlikely people. Lydia and Nathan are two examples and their love story is unique. Of course most of these people are outfitted in fiction but the ones that were real hero’s are made alive to us. Thank God for the sacrifices our ancestors made for us to be able to live in freedom. Thank God for each and every generation since that keeps our country free.

What a daring and thrilling historical romance!
I very much enjoyed this historical novel set in and near Williamsburg, Virginia during the American Revolution. There's a reason Melanie Dobson is a master at her craft. This book gripped me from its first words and I didn't want it to end except of course to see how it all worked out. I was so worried for these characters.
Melanie's books always pack a good emotional punch as well as hold threads of faith and hope even in the midst of sorrow and this book was not veering from that pattern. A book that you keep thinking about long after you've finished it. Highly recommended.

This book wasn’t gripping for me. I didn’t really feel too invested in Lydia or Sarah. It seemed like there was too much going on at once and the perspectives were changing too much. Lydia’s role as a spy and courier would’ve made a much better story if further invested and if more detail would’ve been devoted to it. The romances between Lydia and Nathan then Sarah and Grayson weren’t believable. I wanted to like this story more than I did. It was disappointing as Melanie Dobson has quite a few great books

This was my first book to read by this author. I like her writing style as she is good in telling a story to keep you interested in the story. This was a story that focued on the Revolutionary War in the late 1700's and how the use of spies/couriers were instrumental in the outcome of the war. I enjoyed it and would recommend to others who like to learn a little history with a little sweet romance and mystery woven in that makes for a good read!

A book I picked up (for free!) at our local library sale (after the sale is over, they offer some books on tables for free and I picked up a couple). I have always enjoyed books by Melanie Dobson, and this was no exception. I don't think I realized that she had any Revolutionary War era fiction, but I really enjoyed both the characters and the plot. A bonus was finding out who our male protagonist was related to :)

I loved this book. No spoilers, but I did cry. When I read books, I get attached to the story as if I'm part of it. And this book was one of those books where I kept reading and couldn't put it down. The story keeps going and it doesn't cool down.

Good historical read
This is the second book that I have read from this author and I plan to read more, liked the time period in this read as I have read other books about the revolutionary war. Kudos for having two love stories in one storyline. Not happy about almost having to get the tissues out but not quite. Can't have a HEA for every one.

A memory returned to her—Sarah had asked her to deliver a letter to Mrs. Pendell, and Mrs. Pendell sent one in return. Had her friend been supporting the Patriot cause as a courier as well, before her home was destroyed?
Was no one who they seemed to be?
Lydia tapped her shoes on the floor of the gazebo. "Is my friend safe?"
He paused. "Which friend?"
"I do not believe you want me to say her name."
"Yes, she is safe in Philadelphia."
She sighed with relief. At least Sarah was with her aunt now. "Before she left, she had a letter from...from the woman you just named."
"She delivered it to me."
"I am glad of it." Lydia tapped her toes again. "Has my friend found her Negroes?"
"There is no word."
Her gaze roamed over to the pink blossoms that bubbled atop the cherry trees. Could Elisha have found Morah and his son by now? She prayed so. No family, black or white, should be torn apart.
"How will I deliver the—"
He stopped her. "She exchanged the messages in books."
Sarah had an entire library of books, but Lord Caswell's library didn't contain nearly as many, and he would miss any she borrowed. Perhaps she could think of another way to take them to Mrs. Pendell.
His voice grew serious. "You must be careful, Lydia. They may search your person."
She thought of the British officers that had detained their coach in March. "I shall not let them—"
You may have no choice."
She pressed her hands together. "Nathan?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you for watching over my family."
"Without you, Lydia, I would not be alive."
"I am glad you survived."

But when a mysterious man washes up on the river's edge severely injured, Lydia knows that no matter what side he is on she must help him survive. Her betrothed, Seth Hammond, left to join the Patriots in their fighting and, unbeknownst to Lydia, Seth's sister and Lydia's best friend, Sarah, is a courier for the Patriots as well. I have to say that when I read the prologue it was so beautifully written (I read it with tears streaming down my face) that I just knew the rest of the book couldn't measure up to the high standards I had already set. I was so very wrong and so thoroughly pleased. This was a beautiful story of love and loss, hope and strength, devestation and yet, beauty. I felt like I was IN the story fighting along side of Nathan, Seth and Grayson. Delivering messages with Lydia and Sarah. The Revolutionary War was brought to life within the pages of this book. When there was death I cried with those left behind. When there was even a small victory I rejoiced along with them. I don't think I have ever read a story that has evoked such emotion in me. The Courier of Caswell Hall is a book that you will want to read again and again. It will take you on an emotional journey that you will never forget. I VERY highly recommend reading this book!

Great historical fiction about the Revolutionary War and how a Tory family in VA came to support the Revolution. Spies, intrigue, heartbreak, and occupation by the British Army, befall the family that calls Caswell Hall home.

This is the first time I have read Melanie Dobson. I usually am not a history type of reader, BUT, I did greatly enjoy this story. She did make history come alive for me in this book. I loved the characters and the courage of the women and the slaves. I will read more of her work.

Wonderful historical romance placed during the Revolutionary War. Melanie does a wonderful job of placing her characters amidst a great background, immersing them in the conflict and overall portraying such vital historical stories. Her characters are strong and diverse.

Historically accurate and well rendered. Melanie has a talent for fleshing out historical scenes with fictional but believable characters. I enjoyed a look at the divide between English loyalists and independence seekers.

Love that Melanie weaves in true historical events and the tough decisions people of faith must make in them. Her books are always great reads. She does in depth research for historical accuracy but weaves in characters we will feel we know.

I’m glad to have come across this book in July. We celebrate the victory of the battle for freedom every year without giving much thought to the price paid by individuals and families. In reality, there was so much pain and sacrifice. Families and friends were torn apart and you can sympathize with both sides. No one had ever accomplished such a revolution against such a superpower; you can’t blame the Loyalists for thinking it was going to fail. I appreciated this author’s sensitive and honest approach to an important subject. It’s important to remember the price of freedom if we hope to maintain it.
