Sometimes trying to keep a family together is harder than just facing the truth. Tabby needs to take care of her children and falling for another woman isn’t in her plans but Jenni is hard to resist. Jenni feels a spark of Tabby the minute they meet. Their journey is choppy in the beginning but stick with them for a HEA. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to the next book. Note to the narrator Melissa Rochelle Raub who did a great job. I had a few skips in my copy but still loved the story.

First book in the Healing Hearts series and my first read of Ms. Cassen's work. Tabby is a hard working nurse and Mom to two daughters, constantly working to look after her family but sadly burdened with a loser musician husband. Jenni, rich benefactor to and on the Capmed Hospital Board of Directors. There's a twitch of attraction when the two bump into one another but there's so much baggage to sort through in this age-gap romance before a HEA. Touches of humor, drama and love lift a storyline that was a bit stilted at times. A pleasant read in what seems to be a promising series.

I rec'd a copy through Booksprout and this is an completely unbiased, voluntary review

Good draft, needs editing and more fleshed out ending.

The story was good, the characters well fleshed out, and the plot solid. The writing was awkward and stilted though, in desperate need of editing. Word choice and syntax indicated it could probably use a native English speaking editor to go over it. Sometimes the wrong word was used, or a word that technically meant the right thing, but indicated the wrong vibe or emotion for the scene.
English is ridiculously nuanced language, the rules change in every context. I also noticed a few small research errors.
No glaring spelling issues though! Which is a pet peeve of mine, so that made it easier to read.
So I'd have given it four stars, except the ending was super rushed and abrupt, and rather awkward.
Some stuff went unresolved, we never even touched on the sexuality issue, which for a character who got knocked up and married as a high schooler, then was only with that one guy for over a decade ... at least some acknowledgement could have happened. The forged signature seemed odd, the husband never takes accountability or has to deal with consequences outside of his divorce, the migraine issue gets sort of glossed over...maybe it'll come into play in the next book? Not sure if I'll keep reading or not, but I'm not ruling it out.

Bad Editing and Downright Silly

The editing is very poor. The wrong names were used multiple times. The grammar was poor. There were situations that were utterly ridiculous and made no sense.

3.5 rounded down

I'm not really the biggest fan of slow-burn romance but this was alright. I also just did not feel any chemistry between the two main characters and I wish there was more banter or at least SOMETHING between them.

Most of the story revolved around Tabby's relationship between her husband and how their marriage was failing. I feel like it should not have gone on as long as it did since it took up too much of the story. I would've liked more romantic interactions between Tabby and Jenni. I also wish we would have gotten to see some more interactions between Jenni and Tabby's children. One other thing I would have liked to see explored is Tabby's sexuality. We get a brief mention where she does not know if she is gay or not and that's about it. No other exploration of that topic. It would have been interesting to see how an older woman finds her sexuality after a failed marriage.

Overall I did enjoy this book and it did hit certain points that made me like it. I love a good nurse story so hopefully as I continue this story we get some better romantic scenes besides pining.

Tabby is a well-respected, fabulous nurse with two beautiful children and a husband I wanted to kick to the curb, but she gave him every benefit of the doubt for far longer than he deserved.

Jenni is a widow who lost her wife five years ago and now, as a major donor, sits on the hospital board where Tabby works. By happenstance, they keep bumping into one another and an unlikely attraction forms.

With many ups and downs, their journey is very fragile. The story was very interesting with lots of character healing and growth. I look forward to the next book in the series!

Tabby is a hard working cardiology nurse, a mother of 2 beautiful daughters and married to a chump! When she meets Jenny, she's immediately infatuated. Jenny is a widow, having lost her wife 5 years ago to a drunk driver. She never thought she'd have that feeling of attraction again until she met Tabby. This is a beautiful age gap/ slow burn/ toaster oven/ medical love story! 5 stars!

Watch out for the plot holes

This book features an age-gap romance between Tabby, a struggling straight mother working at Capmed Hospital as a cardiac nurse, and Jenni, a widowed philanthropist and Capmed board member grieving her wife.

While it’s gratifying to see Tabby drop her cheating, deadbeat husband and Jenni move on from mourning her wife Wendy, there are hundreds of other sapphic novels that are much better written.

My greatest frustration with the book are the plot holes that undermine Jenni’s character. She presumably has a seat on the hospital’s board because she’s a major donor, whose wealth reportedly resulted from Wendy’s death. But where did the money come from — an insurance policy, a settlement because Wendy died at the hands of a drunk driver, or Wendy’s personal wealth? (But the latter would seem unlikely since Wendy worked at a “waitressing gig.”)

Also, Jenni is 45 but works only “shelling” (sic) donations, seemingly as a volunteer, for the hospital. Is she retired? Did she have a career?

I kept getting distracted by these questions and couldn’t warm up to Jenni because of these gaps.

Sapphic Marriage Romance Dance

Tabitha and Drew and their two children are struggling to keep their family together. Tabby is a hard-working Cardiology nurse and Drew is a musician "at home". Tabby works long hours to pay all the bills yet Drew is less and less considerate of her time, often leaving Tabby to make dinner for them after a ten hour day.

Jennifer Jilliston is a member of the board of directors at CAPMED, the medical center Tabby works for. Jenny is mostly a philanthropist, donating money to keep the medical center in working shape. Jenny often feels as if she doesn't belong because she isn't in the medical field.

Through a series of odd encounters, Jenny and Tabby become acquaintances and end up with lives rotating around each other. As Tabby's marriage falls apart, Jenny is working hard to keep CAPMED from cutting over twenty senior staffers.

What happens is touching, painful, achingly sad yet hopeful and ultimately a "Happy Ever After" conclusion. You must read this for yourself, experience each moment of the story. You'll thank me.

Jenni deserves better than Tabby tbh.

This book made me question if I rated the other book by this author too highly.
The writing wasn't really good...and Tabby just enjoyed me omg.

I'm still gonna read the other books by this author, since I already own them, but I did not really enjoy this one.

It was fine until like the last 40%.
I did like Jenni tho.

Learning how to find your heart is such a hard journey but life at is best.

Jennifer doesn't see her coming and Tabby has too much going on to see what is in front of her. The experiences, twists and just fragile journey they take is healing. The very real turmoil of a relationship that is in collapse but a heart trying to do what is best for her family makes a great story. The ending that was a little unsure of what's next felt a lot like trope angst but relationships are complicated. This is my first time reading th8s author. A good story with good character growth makes an awesome read.

Tabby and Drew had a good marriage until they did not. Tabby did most6 of the work while her husband just played the guitar. When Tabby met Jenni, everything changed for Tabby. The plot is very good and I like the characters. There is drama and emotion throughout. W9ith a family and children involved, it made for a good read. I re3commend this book for romance readers.

Medical Romance

Nurse Tabby Brinkley is totally happy with her job. She’s married with two wonderful daughters but her husband Drew is becoming the last person she wants to talk with. When she meets Jennifer Jennison a board member of her hospital she sees a different life ahead for herself.

A realistic depiction of people in transition and the struggle to find happiness, healing and fulfilment in the real world of Medicine. Great series start.

This book was originally 4 stars but unfortunately Tabby’s in this book. I admire Tabby and her maternal strength but I hated how she didn’t even try to listen to Jenni and just made assumptions. Lastly, Drew is a bum and I can’t comprehend how Tabby even remotely enabled Drew’s behavior but dismissed Jenni‘s kindness and care??? In general this book was good with the representation of marital emotional abuse but I hated the lack of descriptions of the characters.

This is an age gap, hospital romance which are two of my favourite tropes.
The story was original and kept me hooked. There were a few editing issues however after messaging with Morgan I know these will be ironed out.
Would recommend reading this book. It’s a great read.

Sweet Story

Nice story about life and love. It goes to show that you never know when you may meet your soulmate, even sometimes when you're already committed to someone else.
Well done!

A really well written book, great story, I could feel the different tensions leaping out of the book!
Although I do enjoy a good explicitly written sexual paragraph or more! This book really didn't need that for me to enjoy every page.

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible.com requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

“Melody in Her Heart” is my first audiobook by M.T. Cassen, and my first narrated by MaMelissa Rochelle RaubCann; she did a terrific job, and I look forward to more opportunities to listen to her! As others have noted, one chapter has annoying skips in the audio, and I was tempted to downgrade her performance by a star, but then I realized that could have been a technician error after her recordings were submitted. I often wish an author would listen to the audiobook in its entirety before publication, but that doesn’t seem to happen. Delays in publishing by Audible because of their “review process” is mysterious, as they don’t really seem to review anything. So, I’m leaving the star ratings and mentioning the glitches here. They’re annoying, but relatively brief. Other reviewers have noted the problem, and the audiobook should have been fixed by now.

One of my favorite lesfic tropes is the “straight until not” story. MC Tabby is married with two daughters. Her husband is a jerk to Tabby and his daughters. Tabby’s recognition and acceptance of her attraction to MC Jenni is based on Tabby’s appreciation for Jenni’s caring personality, more than a dramatic sudden appreciation for the female form. The relationship flows naturally, despite crossing gender lines. It’s fitting, for this story, that the eventual sex between the MCs is relatively FTB.

Tabby’s daughters play nice roles (highlighting Tabby as a caring mother, husband Drew as a selfish jerk, and Jenni as having always wanted a family), and are accepting of their mom’s eventual relationship with a woman. Yay kids! BTW….note to the author: it’s ok to cook with wine for a meal with children. The alcohol is cooked off, and is safe for children, and pregnant women too! Use that Marsala wine! Don’t use alcohol in desserts for kids and pregnant women, though!

Jenni is 15 years older than Tabby, but the age difference is treated very low-key in the story. Jenni’s interactions with the hospital CEO and board are a bit muddled. Jenni is a significant donor to the hospital, and early on is described as being invited to Board meetings as a courtesy, and respect for her deceased wife Wendy. Later, during a forged signature situation, Jenni seems to be an actual Board member. BTW…minor spoiler…I kept waiting for the forged signature to be a huge event, but it just wasn’t. Errrr….not sensible.

The hospital setting for a trilogy (so far) will remind lesfic fans of Radclyffe’s Rivers Family series. “Melody in Her Heart” features less drama (I really dislike Radclyffe’s insistence on a break-up-then-make-up rule at the 75% level of her books), and focuses on less powerful women in the hospital system: the nurses. While Radclyffe, as a former surgeon, has credibility writing medical novels, I found it interesting that M.T. Cassen listed two medical advisors at the end of her book.

In the About the Author section, the author says “inner conflicts is were it’s at”. Having been part of Tabby’s inner turmoil to save or leave her marriage, and Jenni’s inner turmoil to balance her own happiness with that of Tabby’s, I believe the author accomplished her goal with this audiobook.

If you enjoy straight-until-you’re-not stories with likable characters and terrific narration, I recommend “Melody in Her Heart” with 4.6* BTW - It’s usually obvious why a title was selected for a book, but I give up for this title!

Book 1:
Melody In Heart

I actually liked this off the bat, thanks to likable characters, and a dramatic, rocky homelife, and a nurse female lead with lots of workplace scenes. The smexual tension at work didn’t hurt.

There’s all this turmoil and a husban I loved to hate and strife and … there are issues at work, jobs on the line … and amidst it all, there’s that ‘new/ exciting/ falling in love’ vibe and it’s so sweet.

Nurse female lead.
Rocky marriage, nasty husband, lots of animosity.
S3xism.
Attempted SA.
Cheating.
Workplace romance.
Second chance at love.

Overall:
Super cute.
Likable characters. Left me wanting more.

3.5 stars.

Once I started this book I could not put it down. I fell into the story with the Characters. It has desire, Passion and romance mixed right along with family drama. It pulled me right in the moment I started reading it. Can not wait to start the second book.

As some said it is not easy to keep a marriage together especially when kids are involved but you have to have both parties trying not just one. Tabby was better off with someone who understood her. Drew should have been more understanding about her job in the first place!

All in all this was a great book to read and would recommend to others definitely!

enjoyed

For the most part this was a very enjoyable book. Two very likable characters. I had a little problem with getting from point a to point b. It did’t flow as easily as it should. But I love a HEA. Off to the next book in this series.

It was never actually mentioned where Jenni got her money from, and for some reason, it never actually crossed my mind to care. It definitely is a huge gaping hole, so fair warning.

My deduction is mainly for the very abrupt resolution. Still enjoyed reading it.

Good story

I liked the story just had a lot of mistakes in the writing. Had to rewrite in my mine to understand correctly the sentences. Many misspellings such as the word waste was used for waist. Naming another nurses name instead of the one of the main nurses.

Will She or Will She not.

I loved this book. Very familiar with medical area. What I didn't like is a person who went from straight to birth in less than 10 seconds. The wishy washy type. Anyone who reads sapphire books would love this series.

Almost wish I hadn't....

I was eager to read another lesbian writer other than Radclyff. It was a very quick read and at times too simple. The story had major pacing issues. I finished it, but I won't go back for Book 2.

Captivating and heartfelt, this sapphic novel paints a vivid picture of love's complexities. With relatable characters and a storyline that pulls at the heartstrings, it's a must-read for anyone seeking an authentic portrayal of love and connection.
