Night Queen Series #1

Tattered Thorns: A Wild Hunt Adventure

Rate this book
I'm Lyrical, and I was born to the Leannan Sidhe. But then, the King of the Kelpies kidnapped me (yeah, I know, a lot of "K's), and all hell broke loose. My mother begged Morgana, goddess of the Sea and the Fae, to save me. But my parents decided that I'm used goods, so I'm a princess without a kingdom.

I now work for the newly revamped Wild Hunt Agency--a PI firm, and boy are my colleagues quirky. For one thing, it's run by a wild demi-god named Yutani, who is as chaotic as his father, the Great Coyote. I find him too attractive, and a little dangerous. And now, life suddenly becomes a rollercoaster as the dragons lose their immortality and all hell breaks loose.

You don't have to have read the Wild Hunt Series in order to read Lyrical's books. For those who love quirky and a little bit twisted urban fantasy with hot guys, lots of action, and women who rule themselves.

I like how this one starts a new series, yet bridges the old one really well. Lots of the characters from the Wild Hunt show up and help. Lyrical is interesting, a bit standoffish, but with her history it makes sense. You can tell that she isn't sure about joining the Wild Hunt, but by the end she realizes she had found her place for her life going forward, surrounded by people that actually want to be around her and don't judge her for things beyond her control. She also has skills that will help as they all work to make things safe for everyone. They all have their work cut out for them with just normal things, then when you throw in what happened to the dragons, it's a bit of a cluster right now.

Tattered Thorns was quick, but engaging read, filled with intriguing characters and a rich backstory. I look forward to reading the next book.

Tattered Thorns, book #1 of Yasmine Galenorn's latest Night Queen Series. The Night Queen Series is not a standalone series, but a spin off of several within The Wild Hunt Universe; such as:

The Wild Hunt Series
Ante-Fae Adventure Series
Hedge Dragon Series
Night Queen Series

It isn't necessary to read them prior to reading Tattered Thorns, but it would provide a greater understanding of situations and characters. I have not yet read them, but they are on my ever increasing TBR.

Content/Trigger Warning: MFC, Lyrical, is a survivor after suffering 2 years of captivity in the hands of a sadist. She was rescued a couple of months prior to the beginning of Tattered Thorns. Lyrical is having flashbacks, nightmares and issues due to her kidnapping, repeated rape/sexual slavery, physical and mental abuse. Other than the initial kidnapping, the abuse is not on page, but she has a triggered episode, panic attack, and a nightmare. Instances of emotional/physical manipulation due to 'powers' and non consent/dubious consent kisses to transfer chi (life force) as means of feeding and as a weapon. On page - abandonment by family, auto accident with deaths, orphaned children, mass casualty events, captured/imprisonment of creatures for torture and sale. Other characters mention traumatic events (alcoholism, abuse, abandonment/exile, kidnapping, flesh and sex trafficking, drug abuse, mugging, deaths, gangs, homelessness etc.).

Well an all next adventure begins in the world of the Wild Hunt series and this one promises to be a doozy of epic proportions. Yasmine has taken us through so many adventures and changes with Herne and Ember since she began that series and the epic love story of a mortal Fae with mixed blood that was shunned by her people on both sides and the sexy God who captured her heart. Now the world as they know it will never be the same, and their friends are embarking on new challenges without them, but they have some new friends to help them out. This series is the beginning of the NEW Wild Hunt Agency on earth, now being led by Ember and Herne’s old friend Yutani, the demi-god son of Great Coyote, and his team as they work not only to deal with the usual craziness of their cases but also the fallout of the Dragons having inhabited Earth. Lyrical was rescued, from a horrific existence she’d been trapped in, by the Goddess Morgana and is now trying to cope with living in the human realm as a royal Light Fae with no family and no court that will acknowledge her. She is angry, determined to kick ass, and has no real purpose in life until Morgana puts her under the tutelage of Ember as her first priestess-in-training and gives her a job with the Wild Hunt Agency. Now working with Yutani and the new faces at the agency, Lyrical has a lot to learn in not a lot of time as the world is drastically changing not just with the murders they are dealing with but also with the Dragons that have finally been addressed in a rather permanent fashion, leaving the entire world on pins-and-needles as to what might happen next. And in the middle of all of that she meets a sexy new man that just might lead to some fun and healing, if not a new relationship, but honestly just how much upheaval can one girl take all at once? I really enjoyed reading this first book in Lyrical’s adventures on Earth. As always with a new series there was a lot of introductions and learning characters, even for those of us that are long time Wild Hunt readers, because there were a lot of fun surprises and changes happening with some of our fav characters too. That said the story moved quickly with a lot going on and there was plenty of adventure and sensuality to keep readers interested. There was not much in the way of relationship building but we definitely get a hint that Lyrical with find herself a partner at some point, though it wasn’t who I hoped it would be. So many favorite characters returned in this story and we get a new look at the world after the Dragons have taken over that I really enjoyed every minute of it. I am looking forward to the next in the series a lot as we see where Lyrical heads in her new life and what she learns along the way as she heals, grows, and comes into her new skin on Earth.

In Tattered Thorns, the first book in the Night Queen series, Yasmine Galenorn introduces us to Lyrical. Once a princess of the light fae court, she’s now an outcast through no fault of her own. After escaping a brutal captivity, she finds herself in Seattle, the newest employee of The Wild Hunt agency.

The Wild Hunt will be familiar to Ms. Galenorn’s readers, since the agency has been the focus of a couple of other series. The Night Queen series is supposed to stand on its own, but I think readers might be a bit confused if they were to dive in here. A lot happened in the previous series, changing the world in ways that could prove difficult to follow. In this case, context really does matter, and it’ll be hard to come by if you aren’t familiar with the characters and plot points of the Wild Hunt books.

Yutani, a supporting character in the Wild Hunt books, now plays a bigger role. He’s the new head of the agency, and he and Lyrical are housemates. I enjoyed getting to know him better, and I’m eager to see what Ms. Galenorn has in store for him. Since he’s a demigod, I’m thinking he’s got quite a bit of power he hasn’t tapped into yet, and I’m excited to see if I’m right.

Like the books in the original Wild Hunt series, Tattered Thorns contains a bit of a mystery. Here though, the mystery isn’t quite as fleshed out as it could have been. I suggest readers view it as more of a side plot rather than the main focus of the story. That way, you’re not as likely to mind the quick and easy resolution.

Since this is the first book in a new series, there’s a lot we don’t know about Lyrical herself as well as the world she’s living in. There are big changes ahead, changes that are sure to test the limits of Lyrical, Yutani, and their coworkers. I’m looking forward to great things in future books, and while I don’t think this is Ms. Galenorn’s strongest work, there’s a lot to love here.

Lyrical is a Leannan Sidhe and a royal princess to boot when she was kidnapped and taken from her family by the King of the Kelpies for two long years. When her mother begged Morgana, goddess of Sea and the Fae to help me but when they got her back, they rejected her causing the wrath of the Goddess Morgana. What happens when a princess with no kingdom is thrust into a world where she has no idea how to survive? Get ready for a wild adventure as Lyrical is drawn into the newly formed Wild Hunt agency and finds purpose and new friends to help her acclimate to the human world. As danger mounts, the world finds itself on tenterhooks as the dragons find their last defense is stripped from them. Now the games begin and as Lyrical finds herself again, get ready for all hell is about to get loose.

On my, TATTERED THORNS is one wild ride from start to finish. With an amazing cast of new and old characters to fall in love with, twists abound in a fast-paced storyline that had me on the edge of my seat till the very end. Ms. Galenorn is master at weaving a complex cast of characters, all with their own personalities and quirks within a story as well as creating a lush and complex background that draws the reader in. With this new addition of Lyrical, a Leannan Sidhe princess kidnapped, rescued then rejected by her family, we find a new character that will stir your compassion and root for her to succeed.

Meet Lyrical, a Leannan Sidhe princess, who had no idea what was going on in the outside human world when she was kidnapped by the Kelpie King and held hostage for two long years. Rescued by the goddess Morgana and rejected by her family, Morgana put her under her wing and helped her have purpose again with the newly formed Wild Hunt Agency. Now with new friends and trying to come to gripes with her captivity, she has to draw on that inner strength and find herself once again. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know Lyrical in TATTERED THORNS. The author does an amazing job in capturing her strength, her defeat and more while going through the storyline. I was really rooting for her to succeed and let these wonderful new people into her life. I can say what little of her captivity that was mentioned was a little uncomfortable to read about, but it gives the reader a sense of how Lyrical succeeded in surviving her trials and more. This author has an innate way of finding her characters most vulnerabilities and secrets and letting the reader in by bits and pieces over the course o the story. We get an update on some returning characters from the original Wild Hunt books which had me giggling and happy plus a few twists left me on the edge of my seat as Lyrical and the gang discovered their first job together is more dangerous than ever. These characters are complex, unique in personalities and quirks and I, for one, loved every minute of it.

TATTERED THORNS delivers a wild ride right off the bat ad this is an author who is a master at story pacing, keeping a few twists as surprises and creating characters that just fly off the pages and into your life. If you enjoy a high-octane adventure filled with unique and complex characters that you can not help but fall in love with, then I highly recommend TATTERED THORNS and the best part is you don’t have to read the original Wild Hunt series either though I also recommend that series to get the whole story of how some of the familiar characters came together. I know I am not the only one when I say I need more in this series and can not wait for book two.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in this new series from Yasmine Galenorn, set in the same world as the Wild Hunt and includes some of the same characters, but the main character is an all new one!

Lyrical is a Light Fae, technically a princess of her people, but when a truly awful event happens in her past, her whole future changes. Morgana is called upon to rescue her, but unfortunately for Lyrical, even though her family wanted her to be rescued, they actually didn't want her back! Completely messed up, right?!

So instead Morgana takes her to the human realm, where she takes a job with the Wild Hunt. Settling in to the way of her new found freedom, she struggles to adjust a bit at first, but soon finds her feet and begins to feel part of the team, part of this new found family.

I liked Lyrical as a character - she is definitely flawed, but is strong and determined to fight back against the emotions and memories of what happened to her. I loved that this story takes place pretty much straight after the events of the end of the wild Hunt series - it felt like stepping back into that familiar world, but through the eyes of someone completely new. And it was great to meet up with some old favourite characters as well.

So looking forward to reading more of this series adn these characters too.

I received a copy of this book from the author but this review is all my own honest one!

Use to love Yasmine’s books, but I think I have out grown her writing. The FMC’s name threw my off, Lyrical, is what she is cuz she can sing..but that being her name was awkward, so I mentally changed the name to Lyric. Another character had a name of Wager…placing a bet are we…story has the dark elements of rape/kidnapping/torture of the FMC that are flashbacks…but overall story has a sweet clean romance vibe…you will get banganixety from reading this…. will she have sex with at least one of the guys she is attracted to? Also who is the MMC of this story thought it was Yutani, but by end of book not sure. Blurb stated that you don’t need to read the other books in this verse, but if you don’t you are lost with the backstory of all the characters in the book. Story started off finding out who was killing the light fae, there was all this build up for an anticlimactic catching of the bad guy, scooped him up within a chapter, but story had a lot of FMC’s personal drama flashback, and the Dragon issue, which was really anticlimactic as well since unless they going out to kill some dragons, they were pretty sitting around watching the goings on. I guess this book was the intro to the FMC so guess there was not much of a plot, but at least when there is little to no plot, we at least get some sexy time.

This is a new series from Yasmine Galenorn and is a spin off from the Wild Hunt Series. You don't have to read the Wild Hunt Series to begin this series, but it is recommended and once you start reading this series, you will want to read the Wild Hunt Series!
A brand new lead character is introduced - Lyrical. Lyrical is a Leannan Sidhe princess, member of the Light Fae. Lyrical is rescued by Morgana and brought to the Owls Hunt Agency (run by Yutani). The Owls Hunt Agency is assisting Vixen with a problem, as it turns out, an enemy of the Light Fae is killing Light Fae. Lyrical is the one who recognizes this and assists with solving the problem.
Lyrical is going to become a priestess of Ember.
There is so much packed into the book, it's a fantastic introduction to a new series as well as a very welcome re-acquaintance with old friends. Ms Galenorn really knows how to turn up the action, create engaging characters, and spin a fantastic tale.
I highly recommend reading this book!

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

4.25*

Going through adding some old ratings from a re found note, just author / title / rating given.

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Reading this book felt to me like the wheel of time was beginning to turn again. The end of one story was the beginning of another, and man is it ever a great beginning! Lyrical is a character you instantly fall in love with and want to know more about. There are some new characters, but also the return of some of past friends, and you get to know more about them. The high pace action is one of my favourite things about how Yasmine writes, she always has my heart fluttering and saying omg!! Did that just happen?! Because of this and the fact I have no patience, I know I need to read her books all in one go because I am unable to put them down, this one was no exception. If you are a fan of the hunt, or just looking for an adventure this is the book for you, you don’t even have to read the past books with this one as a lot is explained, however I warn you if you read this you’ll want to read the first hunt series too!! I wanted to love this book. The story is a good one but my big issue with it is Lyrical. I’m just not a big fan of her and I’m not totally certain why. Maybe it’s the air of snobbier she seems put out since she’s a princess among the Leannan Sidhe fae. I’m hoping that in later books in the series she’ll grow on me a bit. But so far not a fan of her. All that aside I did enjoy the overall story. Something serious is up with the dragons that have invaded the earth, but what? It’s something that will change the tide of the battle against them. In the meantime our friends from the Wild Hunt plus their new recruit Lyrical are on the trail of another serial killer. This one goes after only the Light Fae. It’s an interesting addition to the storyline. Oh! Our newest Goddess Ember has some news of her own as well.
If you’re wanting a continuation of The Wild Hunt series this new series will sort of satisfy that need.

A good start to a new series.

In this we get to see our new heroine Lyrical as she joins the revamped Wild Hunt, filled with old friends and acquaintances we didn't know very well before. The story itself is pretty good. And if you read the previous series, it picks up where it left off, in over arching plot points. So the questions you were left with are getting answers.

And we're getting to see certain characters level up in importance. Side characters looking like main characters, and potential loge interests. I find that very interesting, especially given the character progression. Since this is the 4th series in this world, and the 3rd series is running concurrently, it's very much an interesting dynamic to see the changes with characters that we're already used to being a certain way.

Perhaps we'll see something along those same lines of character progression, and side characters leveling up to MC with Angel, our first heroine's best friend.

Tattered Thorns is such a good spin off from the Wild Hunt Series. Lyrical is an outcast from being abducted and held for two years by the king of the Kelpies. When she is finally free from her two years of torture she realizes how much has changed in the world. Starting with the dragon's out and about terrorizing the world.
In this series you see many of the same faces in the Wild Hunt but we are going to learn so much about Lyrical and Yutani. Lyrical is going to be very interesting to get to know even more. She brings a totally different flare to the group. I hated for Tattered Thorns to end. There is so much more I want to know. Excellent start to a new series! The characters are so intriguing and the world that has been created is very unique. This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Book review

This is the first book in a spinoff series. I really enjoyed reading this book. Lyrical is a very strong female lead with a troubled past that it saddens me to say some people will be able to identify with. That is one of the great things about Yasmine Galenorn though. She is not afraid to speak about the tough issues that most people shy away from.

I love that some of my favorite characters from The Wild Hunt series made an appearance in this book and it looks like we’ll get to see some of them on a regular basis. I’m really curious to learn more about Wendy and Talia. We didn’t get to learn a whole lot about Talia in the Wild Hunt series and Wendy was mentioned very briefly in a few of them. I also loved learning more about the Leannan Sidhe. I am very excited for the next book in the series.

One of Ms. Galenorn's best series is the Wild Hunt. The main arc of that series ended, but she created this 2nd arc, in which we get to see new characters (the main character is fully new) and still get to know what happens to the old characters we grew to love. As per the author's style, the main character is a bad-ass lady. We get to know a bit about her (broken) past and see her rebuild her life. The plot is quite a bit fast-paced, but not overwhelmingly so. The worldbuilding is awesome. Overall, I loved the story and where it seems to be heading and I will definitely continue the series. I recommend it to anyone who loves urban fantasy and has a soft spot for women who have to rebuild their life from scratch.

Tattered Thorns, this is the first book in the Night Queen series. We get to revisit old friends and the revamped Wild Hunt. Lyrical is thrust into a new life after being kidnapped and rescued by the Kelpie king. As Lyrical searches for meaning in her new life as an exiled princess She joins the Wild Hunt in service to Ember after being rescued by Morgana.

This a stand alone series so you don’t have to have read the Wild Hunt books. (Although they are excellent) Mrs. Galenorn does a wonderful job of creating wonderful characters and vivid worlds. Let join Lyrical in this amazing world and see how far she goes.

I am so happy to be back in the world of The Wild Hunt. Lyrical becomes the newest team member of The Wild Hunt and pledges herself to Ember( You read about her in the Original Wild Hunt Series. Go dive into that world if you haven't yet!)
This story is about Lyrical' s journey into joining the New Reformed Wild Hunt Agency and the aftermath of what all happened at the end of The Wild Hunt Series.
I could not put this book down and I eagerly await to see what else happens to Lyrical' s journey with some old favorites.

Wow this is another great new series! Lyrical is a royal princess of the Leannan Sidhe when she is kidnapped by Kelpies. They hold her captive for 2 years. Morgana intervened at the request of the family but once the family finds out she's been sullied, they turn their backs on her.
So Lyrical is living a dangerous life in her own when she's recruited by the Wild Hunt.
The storyline is really good. It gives you a great background on Lyrical and an update on the members of the Wild Hunt. Alot has happened with the dragons! Also be prepared to be surprised by Ember's news!
Really looking forward to see how the new team moves forward on their new cases.

In this Spin off/ continuation from the Wild Hunt series, We meet Lyrical. Lyrical is a light fae who ends up working with the Wild Hunt. As a longtime fan of the Wild Hunt series, I’m thrilled to be back into their world, and with a new character!

Lyrical uses her unique skill set to help solve a set of murders that have everyone stumped. I feel like we got a pretty good intro to Lyrical, and I can’t wait to read more about her and her skills in future stories.

This one is amazing, and I would 100% recommend.

"Tattered Thorns, " by Yasmine Galenorn, is exceptional! It's one of those books that you can't read fast enough, but are dreading coming to the end ~ it's that good!
I loved meeting Lyrical, who is so fleshed out as a character already... Ms. Galenorn is so talented about that!
Diving into any of her books makes you feel as if you are living it, and that is so true here.
Loved meeting prior characters and new ones ~ they mesh so well .
The story line is so strong that I almost pulled an all nighter.
Highly recommend this fast paced thrill packed book to any fantasy lover!

Where to start... if you haven't read the Wild Hunt series it will help you with understanding some background in this new series. Now with that said, this one was intense. The dragons going crazy, the murders, and not to mention a new character, it is a lot to take in! With that though, the book was incredible. I couldn't put it down. The intensity of everything that was going on made it impossible. I am loving the new character and revisiting old ones.

Love the new edition

Lyrical is Awesome a strong women who has been through a gnarly trauma but she will fight in with Raven and Ember. I'm so happy she's Ember's first priestess. The relationship between her and Yutani is cool too, he needed a good best friend after feeling like Herne betrayed him keeping secrets about his Father. I look forward to were this series goes.

Such a great start. We get to meet new characters and welcome back some of the old. Lyrical is such a great character, a misfit like all the other with a terrible past and parents that disowned her like others. After a run in with coyote shifters, she's brought into the Wild Hunt and embarks on anew life and a crazy first mission. I can't wait for the next book to continue her adventure.

The Wild Hunt on Earth is back in business with a new & old crew. The mission has expanded to spying and continuing to help the authorities when they can. Some are new to The Hunt itself and about to be overwhelmed. The others just have to get their muscle memory back.
