Miriam Perlman’s new neighbor is an absolute nightmare.
Sexually insatiable and devastatingly handsome, the guy seems to be on a mission to seduce half of New York City. Every night, Miriam is forced to endure the sounds of the most casual of sex through the thinnest of walls that separate their apartments. The nightly decathlons are ruining her sleep, impacting her social life (well, whatever is left of it, anyway), and making life completely impossible.
As if that weren’t bad enough, he alternates between playfully flirting with her—even going so far as to bring her daily homemade baked goods—and acting like she’s invisible. Half the time he pursues her; the other half of the time he finds her about as compelling as a crack in the sidewalk. She has no idea what to make of him, or of the fact that whenever he smiles at her, she wants to be the one he takes home. It's a confusing game, and it’s pushing her to the brink.
If there’s one thing Miriam Perlman knows, it’s that her womanizing next-door neighbor is definitely not the guy for her.
...Right?
Pippa Glencoe’s contemporary romance, Against the Wall, explores the hilariously disastrous effects of assuming you know everything about your neighbors—no matter how thin the walls between you might be.
Against the Wall is the first book in The Subway Series, a collection of standalones about a group of friends searching (or not) for their HEA in New York City.
Pippa Glencoe is a writer, editor, and recovering wedding photographer. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, she now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, daughter, and “ferocious” pit bull, who tries every single day to murder her with kisses. When she isn’t writing, she’s dreaming about it. And when she isn’t dreaming, she’s scheming.
One of my favorite things about this book was how original this book was. I feel like a lot of authors rely on tropes to help their books, but this one stood out all on it's own. This might have been Pippa Glencoe's first romance but I know she'll have a great writing career if she so wishes.
I want to avoid spoilers and I am not sure how to say much more about this book, but I absolutely adored the Hero of the story. He and Miram are wonderful for each other but the issues and miscommunications before they get together ended up making me laugh!
I absolutely loved this book. Miriam, our main girl, is so very strong even though she sees herself differently. You can feel the "happy/good" in her through the relationships with her friends, you feel the damage from what she has gone through, and you watch her grow through the book. Our boy next door - well he is exactly what Miriam needs, but man is the ride with their relationship like a freaking rollercoaster. Angst all over the place, but that just keeps you hooked and wanting to read one more page.
Let preface by saying, I do not think the blurb properly describes the story, and this book just wasn’t for me. I expected super steamy, enemies to lovers, contemporary, but what I got was angsty, new adult, slow burn (which isn’t the right term). If I had known thats what I would get, I wouldn’t have read this book. However, I see where other readers would be all over this. The first 50% of the book contains vert little dialogue, it’s primarily descriptive text and the heroine’s inner monologue. She is bitter, cynical, judgmental, melodramatic, and insecure, and it was just too much. She redeems herself a little bit. There is so much more I want to say, but they way this book is written prevents me from doing so because I don’t want to spoil it for some who would enjoy this. Also with the author’s approach in telling this story, I didn’t feel like there was a lot of character development in regards to the relationship, if anything it felt rushed. If you like a lot of hot steamy bedroom activities, you get like two scenes towards the end.
I love a good angsty rom-com and Pippa Glencoe hit it perfectly with her newest release, Against the Wall. There are so many things to love about this book but not much I can say without giving away any spoilers. I loved the awkwardness of the 2 main characters and all of their interactions. Both have past trauma that has defined them in some way and both learn from one another in how they handle it. There was a time or two that I wanted to smack some sense into Miriam which goes to show that she was flawed and real. Her insecurities were strong but the hero breaks through and brings out the best in her. I loved the evolution of their relationship and how they grew as a couple once they overcame their obstacles. Again, can't say much because I don't want to spoil anything, but Glencoe threw some curveballs that hit perfectly. The writing was stellar proving that this author has a bright career ahead of her! I loved Against the Wall and can't wait for book #2! 5 stars
3.5 - 4 stars Against the Wall is my introduction to the author and it took me a good while before the words held my attention. As the story progressed, I found myself liking the characters and wondering where the story will go. Miriam lives in an apartment building and does her best to make ends meet, she has her best friends as support and they are certainly great for morale but when someone moves in next door, she is in for a journey. This new man seems to have a revolving door of women…which keeps Miriam up all night. When she is finally introduced, the person is not who he seems. Miriam back tracks and the two start dating. What happens is a slow burn journey of discovery and friendship. Honestly it was a good story and I genuinely liked the main characters.
From the first sentence this book had me hooked! The author has such a unique voice and a talent in making you feel emotional one moment and then smiling the next. I won’t share much more as I don’t want to spoil the story, but I loved the MMC- he was so sweet and awkward. I just wanted to give him a hug…. Or take off his hat and run my fingers through his hair, while he feeds me bagels ;-) I’ve never been to NY, but the description of the city was amazing and made me feel that I was right there with these characters. This story was such a yummy treat. I can’t wait to read book 2.
This book was unexpected in the best of ways and I really enjoyed it. Two characters, wounded from their pasts were able to find a beautiful HEA. A great read and I'm excited that it's part of a series.
I couldn't put it down! I'll probably go right back and read it again, straight through. What a pleasure it is to read this!!! We all know what trauma can do to a person and it is so refreshing to see how two people can pull each other through it and make life good again.
