A Kingdom in Chaos. A Merciless Enemy. A Desperate Quest.

Heat radiated from the gem against her palm, and like a burning ember, the opal stone glowed red.

At seventeen, Princess Lyric rides a horse better and faster than do any of her father’s prized knights. She knows how to dance at the palace balls, how to flirt with the guards, and how to cajole the king into giving her almost anything.

But she’s never learned that non-human, intelligent beings—some of them savage—live in her world. She doesn’t know the gem in her necklace is far more than a family heirloom. And she doesn’t realize the visiting prince who has come to court her wants much more than her hand in marriage.

Overnight, her kingdom is torn from her and her only option is to run. Accompanied by a maidservant and a handsome lieutenant in her father’s palace guard, she must learn to fight, to lead, and to trust those at her side—human or not. If she doesn’t, she won’t live long enough to reclaim her throne.

Kingdom Lost was an absorbing adventure. This epic adventure had mystery and betrayal and an imaginative storyworld with magical stones and skyways. Loved it. I was totally rooting for Princess Lyric as she kept trying to unravel the mystery and calling facing her. Can't wait to read book two!

Prepare to be swept into the magical world of Argonia! This brilliant debut captured me from the first page. The danger. The romance. The quest of Lyric to save her lost kingdom. Enjoy this magnificent adventure with its stunning scenery, fierce rivals, and all the unexpected characters along the way.

It seems so weird for for an author to write a review of her own book, but according to a GR expert whose webinar I just listened to, it's not only acceptable, but a good idea. I hope she's right. :) So here goes--An author's first published book is not something they'll ever forget. I know I won't. I spent so many hours with Lyric, Becca, Marek and the others that they feel as real to me as people in the "real" world, and my life has been changed for the better as a result. I wanted to write a story with heroic, noble characters fighting impossible battles with truly evil villains in a world both like and unlike ours. People who persevere even after great loss because it's the right thing to do. Early readers are saying I accomplished this and are excited about what comes next. If you love fantasy and mystery, wonderful, flawed characters--some human, some not--as well as the beginnings of sweet romance, check out "Kingdom Lost." Let me know what you think. :)

This fantasy had "believable" magic mixed into what felt like a Highlander romance. It was solid. Enjoyed.

Princess on the Run

This medieval-like setting is populated with unique creatures and a determined princess.

While some of the tropes are familiar, Shipman has diverged from the usual displaced princess plot-line by separating her from her guard and pairing her with unusual friends.

I’m eagerly picking up the second book because I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I ended up loving this book! At first the FMC started out self centered and obtuse, but as the story progressed, she grew in wisdom and kindness. I ended up really liking her! This was set in a fantasy world with great world building, lots of non human creatures, and a medieval feel. There was a clear definition between the good guys and the bad guys, but it didn’t detract from the tension and adventure that was woven throughout the book. I’m definitely excited to read the next book in this series!

Kingdom Lost drew me in with a young princess forced to flee and fight for her life when an enemy prince wants to claim her and her kingdom for himself. Kingdom Lost kept me engaged with Princess Lyric’s and her companions’ bravery, loyalty, and determination to survive and prevail against the enemy’s attempts to control. It was a delight to read of a young, female protagonist who cared more for others than she did for herself, even when forced to carry agonizing grief. Dawn Shipman penned a fabulous story with some terrific human characters and with some extraordinarily imaginative fantastical characters. I can hardly wait for the next book. I look forward to learning how some parts of this story continue and of how Princess Lyric will fight against the darkness.

Who isn't fascinated by a spirited princess who is rescued from a bad guy and sets out on a quest to recover all she has lost. Very well written coming of age story told by more than one narrator's point of view. But above all absolutely fun reading~

This is a lovely start to this fantasy series. Princess Lyric, spoilt and demanding, rejects a marriage proposal from a brutal prince. Her kingdom is taken over and her father held hostage as she recklessly goes on a ride with a single maid Becca and her overprotective knight Mareck. The story is fascinating, the different creatures are introduced slowly so the reader is not overwhelmed, and the tranformation in Lyric's character is great to see. I would have liked to have seen more of Mareck and his perspective, but otherwise it was a fun read. 4/5 stars.

I loved this book. The fantasy world is filled with interesting creatures and magical powers. There is a hint of romance to come. But my favorite part is the character development of our heroine, Princess Lyric. She is only seventeen, but in just a few moments time she is thrust into danger, adventure and takes on the burden of somehow rescuing her entire known world. The story ends on the kind of cliffhanger that leaves me eagerly awaiting Book Two.

An excellent fantasy-and I am not usually a fantasy reader

A very well-written and fast-paced adventure with an excellent plot, deep characters and (especially) women of great strength and tenacity. A great gift for both adults and youth. Can't wait to read book 2!

This is a great YA read! Except I'm in my 60's! After reading it I bought 8 copies to give as gifts and the recipients are all asking me when the next book is going to come out.... It's really good. Intrigue, fantasy, a kingdom in trouble and a princess who has to learn quickly to lead. I couldn't put it down! Book 2 is set to be coming out in October. Can't wait!

This is a new book written by author Dawn Shipman, and I know it will be the beginning of a wonderful series. How could you go wrong with a series that has a Princess, a sweet maid/friend, a handsome strong knight, wonderfully magical creatures, magical gems, and a mission to rid the world of evil?
As I first started reading this story I was swiped away with the descriptions and words used to make this story come alive. It flowed and moved in such a smooth way. It was easy to picture all that was going on even when this is a fantasy and in a magical place filled with magical things and creatures.
Princess Lyric and her band of travelers have a strong relationship and even when things seem strange maybe a bit out of control, they all stay together and fight for each other.

A good book is one that ignites deep emotions and feelings in you; so much so that when you finish the book you can’t think about anything but the book, and what you experienced.
Some of the most treasured classic books which have this ability are JR Tolkien’s, The Lord of the Ring Series, and CS Lewis’s, Chronicles of Narnia Series. These books bring about questions and lessons which we can apply to our lives today while painting a captivating and compelling story.
Dawn Shipman has done just that and done a wonderful job spinning this tale. It will hold you spellbound and wanting more.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I read this in a couple of afternoons. Just loved it! You are pulled into the story immediately and it doesn't let up. The writing is excellent and the story flows well with no awkward transitions. It seems to be categorized as YA, presumably because the main character, Princess Lyric, is 17, but this would be enjoyed by everyone. Really looking forward to the next one! Thanks Dawn!!

Dawn Shipman’s Kingdom Lost offers readers a hint of magic and a healthy dose of adventure. Throw in friendship and comradery, kingdoms, horses, intelligent beings—oh, my! The story has great character development as the main characters embark on a worthy quest for different people groups to work together to free the realm from Lothar’s evil intents. The author works some kind of magic of her own to help readers keep track of all the characters 😊 Even though the fantasy is epic in nature, the story moves right along and doesn’t drag with good pacing throughout. (i.e., I reached the end before I knew it!) That said, this is definitely book one of a series—be prepared to wait for book two.

This is a debut, young adult fantasy which would be especially enjoyed by teen girls who still love fairytales. The modern day folktale reader who reads THIS fairytale will encounter a delightful Strong Female protagonist, 17-year-old Princess Lyric, who is no damsel-in-distress and can hold her own, yet still retain her feminine charm. What’s not to love? Add some other-worldly entities, some good, some evil, a behind-the-scenes trouble-making wizard who really needs to be shot in head, and a kingdom suddenly wrested away from her by a dastardly prince, and you have a quest to embark upon with haste by Lyric and her motley crew of newfound friends. Looking forward to book 2 in this promising series!

I just read this book in a day because I couldn’t put it down. It was marvelous. I love the author’s writing style. I’m a huge fan of fantasy and this was amazing. The storyline as well as the magic and fantasy elements felt new and refreshing which is sometimes hard to come by when you are a bookworm. The characters had depth and were relatable. I am excited for the next book in the series to come out. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long. 💕
