Vampires Will Be Vampires

Rate this book
The supernaturals banished the gods from earth.
They should have done a better job.

My life, as I knew it, is over.

My beloved career, my purpose, my very identity has been ripped from me. Because I now possess the devil's magic. And no one around me is safe.

Oh, and my dragon ex-partner-in-action wants my help saving the world. Again.

But this time the enemy is no mere magically-gifted human. I'm facing a vampire who's been around for a millennium, maybe two, and who has more money, experience, and influence than I can possibly imagine. A vampire who's somehow murdering the last remaining immortals. And if that's not enough, he's backed by a goddess.

I thought my new devil's magic was too much power for anyone to possess.

But I'm terrified it won't be enough to stop what's coming.

Warning: This urban fantasy series contains danger, mayhem, humor, and heart, with characters you'll fall for—including a vampire with an unbeating heart of gold, a book-hoarding dragon who eats criminals for breakfast, a mysterious faerie who's as hot as the desert he slunk out of, and a human heroine who'll fight to save them all.

Fans of Ilona Andrews, Kim Harrison, Annette Marie, K.F. Breene, Hailey Edwards, or Patricia Briggs, dive into this thrilling new world for a feel-good, action-packed adventure with a dash of slow burn romance.

3.5 Overall, a really fun UF series!

It is definitely worth reading, especially if you're looking for a fast, fun, cute read. It's definitely not the best UF or anything, but it's the perfect read if you're looking to relax.

The characters are fun and interesting, the plot is fast-paced, the world builder is decent.

Worth a try!

My major issue with this final book was that while it wasn't longer than the other two, it felt like it was two times longer because of the boring pacing.
Lyra's constant internal diatribe about moral compass, the lack of action and the absence of Ronan for the majority of the book made me struggle with the read.
And while the final part between Lyra and her dad, and Lyra and Ronan were quite cute, the journey to get there was tiring.

I DNF'd this around the 25% mark. I was really bothered in the previous book about the way the mind control aspect was written and that carried over here. Here's this abhorrent power that Lyra despised, yet she took it for herself and then started using it? It didn't make sense considering the events in the previous books. It's possible things got better as the book went on, but I had to quit when she decides she's just going to accept the power for "a year" and then get rid of it. No thanks. Not my cuppa.

DNF.

JigSaw

The whole Keyser Soze-thing never thrills me. Some megalomaniacal genius super-villain who has planned for absolutely every possible scenario and manipulates every decision the protagonist makes to their ultimate goal is rarely enjoyable for me in any medium.

This series had some great ideas, but I struggled with the pop-culture references. Book 1 had moments that felt like an Under The Dome fanfiction writing prompt. However, it was written well and I liked both the tone and the characters. Unfortunately, book 2 featured a Jessica Jones/Killgrave-esque plot wherein the erstwhile heroine is trapped by a mind-controlling megalomaniacal genius super villain and forced to do his bidding. If that weren’t over-the-top enough, this book takes it to a whole new level escalating the AU to include a Yeti, Baba Yaga, a Kraken, and a fleet of dragons to combat some kind of Elon Musk/Jeff Bezos/Mark Zuckerberg corporate megalomaniacal genius super-villain who is trying to raise the old gods in exchange for being able to hook up with an old girlfriend.

Lyra is back, still kicking ass and saving the day, even if she was forced to give up her job with the police and give up some of her morals.

There is a lot of action even a bit more romance than in the previous books, but most of the book deals with how Lyra handles her new power and the possible moral questions that come with having such a power.

We see a bit of her family, but her main sidekicks are still Aurelis, Ronan and Strike. And they are setting out to save the world again. This time they even have a profecy working against them.

I still didn't feel any of the funny moments, but there were some heart wrenching ones. But no matter how well they are written, they just didn't stay with me. I like Lyra and all of the other main characters, I just don't love them. I don't want to spend time with them after putting the book down, and I don't care if anything happens with their happily ever after.

So this is a very good book. It's just missing something that would make it great.

Honestly, I think my favorite part about this book was the last few pages between Lyra and her dad and Lyra and Ronan.

I'm a little thrown by how different the first book is from the second two. The first one is a lot of action and preventing this big bad thing from happening. While the second two have a similar idea of preventing the next big bad - the action is questionable, the villains are ridiculously overpowered, and they read more like philosophy books. There's a ton of speculation on who the person at fault is and the morality of mind control magic. This book is no different - it isn't long to begin with and it would be quite a bit shorter if you condensed how often Lyra goes over how much she hates this new magic, what a slippery slope it is to think you're compelling people to do something for the greater good, and what worse thing might happen if you do compel someone to "fix" something. Lyra spends all her time following Aurelis's orders to investigate this big mystery with the goal of taking down the vampire responsible for the Lyrebird Project (and therefore Lyra's ability) while constantly ruminating on the morality of using the mind control power she hates for "the greater good" and trying to find out where you draw the line. It got really repetitive.

In addition to Lyra's moral musings getting repetitive, so did some of the things the characters said. Example being page 139 (Kindle, 54%) Where Aurelis says, "There's a summoning portal down there. And a bunch of monsters pouring out of it." - then a few paragraphs later she says, "And the portal just collapsed anyway. But not before letting through a bunch of monsters.". I found myself skipping whole paragraphs to finish this one.

As someone else mentioned, I really don't know what the titles of these books have to do with anything either. In the last one, the villain was human but it was titled "All is Faerie in Love and War". Yes, her family hid in Faerie, but other than that it had nothing to do with Fae. This one is "Vampires Will Be Vampires" but really the only thing that is linked to is the main villain is a vampire.

The author's take on vampire and other supernatural lifespans is admittedly interesting - vampires typically only live 1,000 years max and fae only live 150 while maintaining a youthful appearance until rapidly aging during their final days (which sounds extremely unpleasant). Other than that, they storylines really didn't draw me in and I only finished the series because it was a trilogy and I was determined to see it through. If there had been more books I would have stopped after the second.

Knowing this was always intended as a trilogy, I am also curious about how slowly the author developed both Ronan as a character and the relationship between Lyra and Ronan. She waited until half way thru the final book to be like "oh yeah, and Ronan is the great grandson of a faerie king".

Also, how did Wolfram manage to find TWO skinwalkers when they're supposed to be reclusive, rare, and masters of disguise? I suppose he could have found them throughout his 2,000 year life and just kept tabs, but are skinwalkers immortal?

What exactly could Stewie have bet on in the stock market knowing Lyra was going after Wolfram?

I liked the author throwing in the alternative "good" side to Lyra's compulsion power at the end.

The trilogy draws to a conclusion and leaves the reader fulfilled when the story neatly ties up loose ends and the new plot line. This book stretches reality a bit further in the magical world, if that's possible, but still takes the reader on a fun journey while battling evil-genius enemies.

The ending resolved relationships, but was less than satisfying in that there were allusions but no concrete statements. The plot line, however, was complete and whole.

Isla Frost has a penchant for writing a good novel that is satisfying, well thought out and entertaining - which, surprisingly, some authors lack when telling their stories.

The least enjoyable of the three books. I was not invested in the plot to save the world from a powerful vampire and the goddess of last chances. It left me wanting the main character to decide what she wants to do with her life. I felt that it was a little too ‘Oh woe is me I have this bad magic and I might use it for evil’ when we know she won’t because she in inherently good. I would like to see more books in the series as I don’t feel we have seen the end of Lyra.

Good but not a final book

I liked this book. I did find some of the plot a bit frustrating as the premise is be told the story instead of detective work. My issue is this is was disappointing for the final book in the series, far too many questions are unanswered. I hope Frost reconsider this as a complete series.

Cute quick read. It’s a good one if you don’t want to put much thought into it. Starts off at 100mph and doesn’t slow down. Not much development of characters or events-just constant go, go and more go.

Each book has seemed like the same plot just on a larger scale. I just wanted to finish the series. I did appreciate how the ending wrapped up in her personal life. But I wanted more from the side of the goddess of second chances.

Relatively enjoyable series. Not a lot of character depth or development and the endings all seem a bit rushed and lucky. But an easy read.

Dommage.

This is the last book in the trilogy and Lyra spends most of it afraid of the power she now possesses. It would be annoying but the reality is that it's just been a few weeks since the traumatic events of the last book so Lyra has the right to still be upset and still trying to find a new meaning for her life after her previous one went up in flames.
Aurelis, her dragon sidekick, is less impressed with her moral dilemma and sees her new power as an opportunity to finally solve the mystery that sent her to Las Vegas in the first place.
I liked how this was all tied with the mythology Ronan told Lyra in the first book: how the first supernatural creatures banished the gods that were using them as slaves and puppets to gain their freedom... of course the gods didn't take that lightly and now one of them is ready to come back, helped by a desperate minion. It's very bad news for the world, and Aurelis, Lyra and Ronan have the happy duty to stop them. Easy, right?

I don't know if it's me or if this author really has a gift for tearing my heart out and stomping on it but it's what she does: the way Lyra's feeling are described, her trouble with coming to terms with the huge power she now wields, the responsibility of it, it all resonated within me and made me want to read more and more. I needed to know how Lyra would come out of it, and the ending didn't disappoint in that regard.
At a certain point I thought it was all too abrupt, too quick, that we were missing something, but the final chapters gave me everything I wanted from this trilogy.

A note about the romance: it's barely hinted at, the L word is never mentioned, every scene is fade to black and the courtship is barely described... and yet I felt Lyra's and Ronan's feelings loud and clear, the way they filled each other's life, how they needed each other.

In conclusion, this is the urban fantasy series that I wasn't expecting. It's fun, full of adventure, high stakes and feelings. It's also deep and sort of dark in its themes but I loved every word of it!

4 You Really Are The Least Intelligent Item Of My Collection Stars

Vampires Will Be Vampires is the third book in the Fangs and Feathers series by Isla Frost.

It's a little bittersweet that this series is concluded in so few books. I've loved every moment traipsing along with Lyra as she discovers herself and reaffirms the core people in her life are what buoy her doing trying times. I love that she acknowledges even when she's feeling weak, she can count on these important influences to save her from poor choices. Because she can't separate the love she has for them from everything that makes them who they are.

It's a little sad that she'll never visit a beach, some small sacrifice she was forced to make to save the world yet again. Maybe, in some literary pocket world, she could work to clean the ocean as an apology to Zeres? She'll already be working to purify the bayou for Jada's people..

I was also sad that Zax was killed off, especially in so few words. I honestly thought, when she was first introduced, she would shed more influence over this series than she did. While her creating and improving Strike definitely allowed this sarcastic and enjoyable drone to enlighten the pages of Lyra's tale, I had held out hope for a little more.

I'm happy to know Ronan and Lyra will find happiness in each other. That they have carved out spaces for each other within themselves. That they seem to work so flawlessly to allow and even some times force the other to take what they need from life. I'm equally happy, that while he hasn't been saved, they found a way to at least extend the time Miles has before he loses himself.

I do wish I could see where the bookish dragon Aurelis and Lyra would take us next. But, I'm happy just to have met them.

What an ending!

These books are incredibly well written, engrossing, well- themed, emotional and HEA. but goodnight does the MC go through hell to get there

Book 1 is exactly as promised: a fast feel good UF. It was amazing. I love the relatability and scrappy Morality of the fmc. She's a cop, whose partner is a dragon (with all sauce, attitude and fire to back it up) who has to save her family, and oh the world, off duty. Her magic steals another just for a little bit so the application is great and interesting. I loved this book. Highly recommend.

Book 2 - bad news bears when a magical baddie can compel anyone and everyone to do horrific things. Well written, well tormented. Maybe too much for this poor anxious heart. Thankfully, her found family. (Sentence deliberately truncated.)

Book 3 - end of the world here when a basically immortal vampire starts killing actual immortals. I loved the myth and fae here. And hated hated some of the horrible animals used here too. (To this day, my husband will shout " Chupacabra!" To weird terrifying noises in the night. Yes, I'm scared so there). There is another worse creature i didn't know i should be scared of and won't tell my husband about. At one point I texted my emotional support book buddy "67% and it's broken and I'm very mad about it." But the best part was that it got fixed and the end was glorious, satisfying and long and great and I'm happy. But it was rough there for a second.

So. I love the themes, truth chimes, justice, love, family. And the grunted my way through the desolation and despair parts.

I've enjoyed this series and this was the third book in the series. I'm not sure if this is a trilogy and this is the final book, or if the series will be continuing. The ending left it in a way that its open, so we'll see.

This book has our female MC - Lyra - out of a job due to her actions in the last book. She now has a magic that no one feels is safe as she has the ability to compel any creature to do her will...scary, right? She is feeling out of place and in the midst of slight depression when her Dragon ex-partner Aurelis throws her on a plane and sends her on a strange journey. It isn't until she returns that she is finally given the information about what is going on with the Immortals and the Dragons of the world. Things are dire and Aurelis thinks Lyra has a chance of using this new magic to stop it.

Things start from there and we get to see more of Ronan, her Vampire father, her siblings and Strike - her new/old AI sidekick. I'm not sure what it was, but this book did not hold my attention as much as the first two books did. Yes, this is Urban Fantasy, but even in that genre, it was a bit out there. The plot involved Baba Yaga, a Kraken and a Yeti and had a "super villian" Vampire who wanted to destroy the world as we know it to get his mate back. Oh, I forgot, the Goddess of Last Chances was also involved. So yeah, lots of heavy hitters....

I listened to this on audio and the narrator was fine. Lyra is okay as a character, I didn't hate her but I didn't love her either. The relationship with Ronan seemed to have progressed off page since the last book and even that relationship felt a little superficial.

This was a fun and fairly easy read, but should probably not be read as a stand alone. Would I continue of there is more to the series? Hmmm.....yes I think so.

Probably.

Right book at the right time

I would have enjoyed this book anyway, but it was just the right note I needed for right now. Because of that it’s 5 full stars not the stingy four and a half or whatever I usually would have given it.

I had my heart trampled these past several years. Not just romantically, but life-deep trampling. There were some moments and words I needed to hear that could only reach me through fiction. This book. Maybe some introspection and healing with a catalyst of characters that could reach me. I don’t know. Words from a vampire named for a famous character written by my all time favorite writer (Lois McMaster Bujold) and an illustration of real, flawed, but meaningful connections to self as well as others. As I said, introspection.

Honestly, I’m feeling kind of bruised. But worth it.

The whole series wasn't bad. I like that it didn't require a great many romantic scenes to be a good book that still managed to get the point across. Yes the MC loved a man but it wasn't even a major part of the series. Rather it was a true love story in which there was love of friends and family over the need to have a love triangle. Her best friend is a dragon, her dad is a vampire and her siblings are shape shifters and at least three other species. The story is told with love and kindness standing center stage rather than hormonal physical need. Sex doesn't need to dominate the pages to make one feel that MC is a loving person and loved in return. Sex isn't love. I think I just might have a new favorite author in Isla Frost.

Finished an excellent series!

Good stuff! Finally finding the ultimate villain in the series. Immortals and a Goddess. There is an excellent storyline, humor and of course the eternal war of good versus evil! There is a bonus in about the last 10% of the book in quite a few quotable sentences that we worthy of placards or maybe cross stitch to hang on your walls😊!
P.S. To Isla Frost. I do hope that there is more of lyra. I want to know what she and Aurelis come up to do for work. I want to see Miles at Sage's wedding. How her family grows up. Does she and Ronan have her own? Do they continue Miles legacy of adoption? Come on there has to be a story or stories there somewhere?

Lyra loved being a cop and so being kicked off the Force means that she's struggling to find meaning in her life. When her dragon, ex-partner shows up and immediately demands that she start working on her side project, Lyra races to adjust and catch up.

Why I started this book: Found this series just before the release of the third book, so I was happy to finish it off in almost one go.

Why I finished it: Harder to get into this book, but I did like the moral questioning and trying to find the best path forward. Also I am learning that I am a bigger mood reader around fiction than I ever recognized... so sometimes even a small break makes it harder to come back to a series or story.

I'd love to know who Isla Frost is.

I've read all six of Isla Crowd's novels. I'd love to know who she is and if I've read her before. I'm fairly certain she is a woman because she writes urban fantasy like a female author, but only a little. Her romance crossover ratio is just right and is not distracting (high praise, right?) Meaning this; I like to be swept away as much as the next guy, but Isla gets to the story in a powerful way. She has a point and gets to it, and the final resolutions are not long, drawn out affairs. Hats off to her and I'll be on board with what's next. Enjoy.

will see

This was good and disappointing. I loved how the author gave us that HEA. We needed to know that the romance we felt brewing in these books are mutually felt but also we read it as well. The ending of these books were not what I was expecting. This wasn’t really an ending because it left open so many other stories to happen. I felt the author could have given us a career goal and a view about other aspects of Lycra’s life.

Overall I didn’t see this as an ending and I am expecting more books because of how this ended.

Vampires will be Vampires ( Fangs and Feathers Book 3)

This third book is spectular and brings even more crazy action and outrageous plot developments. Love the characters and the slow and loving addition of details as you read on, mesmerized by all the creatures and their super powers.
i absolutely loved and enjoyed this chapter in the life of a woman who consistently puts others ands their values in place of herself. Wonderful fantasy with mind blowing adventures and peril.
Great read! I definitely recommend this whole series!!

still well-written, but…

…in many ways, this novel was just a repeat of the last, just turned up to 11. Bad guy, world-ending scenario, spying, in the end it’s her power vs his. A few of the beats are different but the structure is the same. Still very well-written, but that’s because the second book, while it has some flaws, is still a good book. Basically reading the same book back-to-back makes me feel like the happily ever after we got here should have been edited for the last book, and it would have fit equally perfectly.

Another brilliant series from Isla Frost!

I really enjoyed this series the characters were brilliantly written and complemented each other perfectly. Fabulous plot line with all of the situations they ended up in. I loved her informer with his dog and the way even he ended up with a HEA. Can't thank Isla enough for yet another amazing series and can't wait to find out what the next series is about.
