As soon as I learned that yesterday's Ultimate Princess Celebration came with a free ebook, I scoured the internet to find and read it. Tales of Courage and Kindness contains 14 short stories that each feature a different official Disney Princess and two bonus stories that about Queens Anna and Elsa that take place after Frozen 2. The book's illustrated novella format reminds me of a two-book series I found many years ago called Once Upon a Princess, which retold each princess's story from her point of view. This book differs from that format in that it is told in the third person narrative, but the compilation of different princess stories accompanied by beautiful illustrations is still similar. Each short story is written by a different author and illustrated by a variety of artists, each with their own unique and colorful style.
There isn't much point in reviewing each short story individually when you can read them all for free online, so instead, I will go over some highlights and recurring themes. Each story does a beautiful job of capturing the spirit of the Disney Princesses as kind-hearted and rebellious young women who go out of their way help those around them, especially those who are outcasts or underprivileged. The stories reminded me of what was so great about Disney's animated Little Mermaid series, which contained similar themes. From Belle learning to communicate with a Moroccan ambassador despite the language barrier to Rapunzel creating a Braille star chart for a blind astronomer, each story emphasizes the princesses' desires to encourage tolerance of those who are different than them, a popular narrative in today's princess media. Though some of the stories included the princes in the background, none of them were focused on romance. Sometimes the lack of love stories in modern media bothers me, but that wasn't the case here because it was so nice to see my favorite female leads make new friends and form closer bonds with the few female sidekicks that already existed in their stories. One story that stood out in this respect was Pocahontas, who befriended three English sisters that settled near her village after John Smith left. John was the only English settler in her movie that she had any genuine contact with, so it made sense that she would meet others after he left and she remained in the village. It was an added treat for her to interact with female characters her own age besides Nakoma.
I like that these stories take place at various points in the princesses' lives, showing that the authors were not limited by the events of their movies or sequels. Ariel's story takes place when she is still a mermaid, while Mulan's is shortly after returning to her village prior to the events of her sequel. I particularly enjoyed reading the story about Cinderella because it gave a rare look at a time in her life where she actually impressed Lady Tremaine as a result of being kind to her stepsister, Anastasia. It would be difficult to imagine that her stepmother was cruel to her every second of the time that she lived under her roof, so it was nice for Cinderella to achieve a win for herself and get on her stepmother's good side without external help for one fleeting moment. The only story that I would have preferred to see take place in a different time was Merida's. the author placed her tale right in the middle of the movie Brave, which made it feel too much like a summary of the film instead of an original story. Other than that, the tales in this book felt like gazing into a magic mirror at a secret part of each princess's life that we would never have otherwise gotten to see. Since they were written as one-offs for a single book, the stories felt more genuine and less commercialized than the Disney Princess Enchanted Tales series that Disney attempted over a decade ago.
Of all the stories in this book, Jasmine's was the felt the most out of place and didn't make sense given her character's background. She is the only official Disney Princess who wasn't the main character in her own movie, so perhaps the author felt she needed to stretch our suspension of belief to get a good enough story to match the rest of the themes in the book. In this tale, Jasmine becomes the team captain for a group of princesses who participate in a game of polo in a tradition that dates back to when her mother was alive. Where the theme of female friendship resonated beautifully for Pocahontas, it was awkward and confusing for Jasmine. The original Aladdin movie asserts that Jasmine was raised alone and had no friends besides Rajah. For her to know these other princesses well enough to lead them in a team and be familiar with her mother's activities in the game seems to contradict everything we already know about her. On a personal level, I had trouble getting into this story because I don't like sports, but Jasmine also never came off as a particularly athletic princess. Even when she managed to jump across the rooftops of Agrabah using a wooden beam, she seemed just as surprised by her own skills as Aladdin was. It was also odd that all the male characters from the original film acted like mindless cheerleaders with nothing to talk about other than how much they supported Jasmine winning the match, which is the exact opposite problem that I had with the animated Aladdin series, which placed too much focus on the male characters.
All in all, Tales of Courage and Kindness is a charming anthology that contains all the things I love about princesses. Most of the stories stay true to the core of each princess's being and what makes her special. I love that they didn't feel like generic lessons for children about morals and that each author took the time to explore a good time and place for the event in each princess's life and what sort of unique challenges she might face in her own individual kingdom. It is littered with breathtakingly gorgeous illustrations in numerous styles from pencil art to paper art to more traditional-looking storybook drawings. As always, I picked this book randomly off the shelf at the library. I wouldn't read it again because this book was not exactly in the genre that I normally read from, but it was still a fun book.

This was a beautiful and adventurous story, great for any Disney Princess fan out there! I love how each story added certain qualities about each princess that make them all stand out! It made their story feel even more important. I did rate each story individually!
Tiana: 5 stars! I love how she kept her father's memory alive even now with her new restaurant! The friendship between Tiana and Charlotte is so unique and beautiful for back in the time the story is set in. Tiana is very giving to her people now that she has the means to do so and encourages others to do the same!
Belle: 4 stars! This is a great story of exploring different cultures so we can learn from one another! Belle's intelligence truly shined in this story with her eagerness to learn. She showed that patience and kindness goes a long way. I do want to point out that it made Mrs. Potts the cook and she is not. Mrs. Potts is the nanny/ castle maid, there is already someone else who is the cook.
Moana: 5 stars! This story was my favorite because Moana makes friends with a sea turtle who not only rescues her, but she rescues them as well later in her life! Moana's bravery and leadership role really stood out in this book! I have a soft spot for animals so this story truly won me over!
Mulan: 5 stars! Even though Mulan is now known as China's warrior hero, she still remains true to herself. Mulan stays humble, kind, and brave! She makes a friend and shows her that it's better to remain true to yourself then to be what everyone thinks you should be.
Cinderella: 5 stars! This woman has such tremendous patience and kindness no matter how much cruelty she endures from her step family. In her own way, Cinderella is so brave with the way she treats her step family and tries to stand out from them!
Merida: 3 stars! This book did show that being patient and kind is very important. Even though Merida is very different from a typical princess she still needs to learn these qualities for her people. I wish the story dived more into before or after she becomes queen. This was more of book telling the original story that I can pick up somewhere else.
Snow White: 4 stars! In this story Snow White shows how important it is to share and work together! Snow and the dwarves must repair furniture and the roof for their home and each of them gets something special for their hard work!
Rapunzel: 5 stars! Rapunzel is the same girl we know and love who takes an interest in the stars. Rapunzel gets a big telescope made to see them all, and she helps someone is blind see the stars in their own way which was so beautiful!
Pocahontas: 5 stars! In this story Pocahontas shows the newcomers of her land their ways! Even though they don't understand this way of life, Pocahontas remains kind, knowledgeable, and true! Her kindness and lessons really pay off because in the end they want to learn from her.
Jasmine: 5 stars! Jasmine's leadership skills are standing out when she is the team captain for her team! It is a challenge to teach the girls properly, but with patience, understanding, and kindness she does it and earns a trophy just like her mother did! I do wish one of the qualities listed for my favorite princess is her independence!
Aurora: 3 stars! The story started off pretty promising, but I was left a little disappointed that there wasn't more to it. All it was about was the fairies trying to get their wands back. But I do like that Aurora also saved a squirrel!
Ariel: 5 stars! I love that this story featured Ariel and her sisters. Ariel learns the importance of being there for her family. She loves going on adventures, but being there for her family is also important to do it's all about teamwork.
Elsa: 4 stars! I loved that Elsa was protecting the spirits of the forest staying true to her role. This story wasn't as interesting as some of the others though. I felt like it ended pretty abruptly and I wanted a bit more from it.
Anna: 5 stars! Even though Anna is Queen she still remains true to herself! She wants to continue to be friends with the people even though she is a Queen. Anna is more than her title and truly shows that she is an excellent Queen to all!

May 5, 2021● Shine of the Sea (Ariel): 2 stars. The first I read, and my least favorite so far. Ariel's sisters are completely out of character in this one, and for the mere sake of creating conflict. Attina was the worst, and while reading her dialogue all I could think was, "Geez, girl, CHILL!" As a huge Little Mermaid fan, i couldn't really enjoy this;
● Guardians of the Ocean (Moana): 4 stars. I liked this a lot, except for the fact that it seems to contradict canon at the beginning, when Moana gets caught swimming by Sina and her mother says nothing about it. Wasn’t the ocean supposed to be off limits for her? Anyways, being a sucker for Polynesian culture, I loved how detailed is this story in that sense.

-POTENTIAL SPOILERS-
I really overhyped this book for myself, and that really sucks. I really love the Disney Princess line and I like anything that expands on them as characters and adds more depth to their families and world and stories. The second I heard about this, and how it was going to be fully illustrated and everything, I made it my mission to get this book and not stop until it was in my hands somehow. This sounded like the Holy Grail of Disney Princess content to me, so I really wanted to read it.
The idea of it is really good, I'll admit. I mean, that's why I wanted to read it to begin with. The illustrations were all really beautiful and matched the girls perfectly. And a lot of the stories were really good. However most of them felt like they had little to do with the princess in question and could've belonged to anyone, and didn't really fit them very well. They didn't show off their unique qualities.
Tiana, Belle, Mulan, Rapunzel, Ariel, and Anna all had the best stories in my opinion. I felt they really encompassed who they were as characters and offered interesting tidbits and insight into the worlds they lived in. Such as Ariel's world having different kingdoms that align with each of the oceans, meaning she lives in the Atlantic Ocean.
The others were just okay, I didn't really see what they had to do with the princess in question. Like Pocahontas had a good one but I kinda wish it was more based on her culture instead of just having her talk to more white settlers.
The weakest was Merida, but that's probably just because I haven't seen Brave, it's the only Disney Princess movie I haven't seen as a matter of fact. But according to the people who have seen it, the story is just very okay. It takes place during the actual movie for some reason.
I also wish this was conceived just a bit later. It would've been really nice to see Raya featured with a culturally-accurate story that was true to both her as a person and the place she comes from. But there's nothing for it now.
I do wish the review was longer, like I originally thought about going through each story individually, but I honestly don't feel much need to. A lot of it would just be rehashed and it's like I always say in reviews; no need to make them overly-long when a simple and short review works just fine. I also wish this collection was much better. It wasn't awful, it wasn't even just decent, it was good, but it could've been a lot better as well.
I really overhyped this book for myself, and that really sucks. I really love the Disney Princess line and I like anything that expands on them as characters and adds more depth to their families and world and stories. The second I heard about this, and how it was going to be fully illustrated and everything, I made it my mission to get this book and not stop until it was in my hands somehow. This sounded like the Holy Grail of Disney Princess content to me, so I really wanted to read it.
The idea of it is really good, I'll admit. I mean, that's why I wanted to read it to begin with. The illustrations were all really beautiful and matched the girls perfectly. And a lot of the stories were really good. However most of them felt like they had little to do with the princess in question and could've belonged to anyone, and didn't really fit them very well. They didn't show off their unique qualities.
Tiana, Belle, Mulan, Rapunzel, Ariel, and Anna all had the best stories in my opinion. I felt they really encompassed who they were as characters and offered interesting tidbits and insight into the worlds they lived in. Such as Ariel's world having different kingdoms that align with each of the oceans, meaning she lives in the Atlantic Ocean.
The others were just okay, I didn't really see what they had to do with the princess in question. Like Pocahontas had a good one but I kinda wish it was more based on her culture instead of just having her talk to more white settlers.
The weakest was Merida, but that's probably just because I haven't seen Brave, it's the only Disney Princess movie I haven't seen as a matter of fact. But according to the people who have seen it, the story is just very okay. It takes place during the actual movie for some reason.
I also wish this was conceived just a bit later. It would've been really nice to see Raya featured with a culturally-accurate story that was true to both her as a person and the place she comes from. But there's nothing for it now.
I do wish the review was longer, like I originally thought about going through each story individually, but I honestly don't feel much need to. Each princess shows courage and kindness in their own way. Tiana is generous. Belle shows friendship. Cinderella stands up for what she believes in. And many other princesses are included as well. Compilation of short stories, each tale teaches important concepts about friendship, kindness, courage, and other traits of a leader. The illustrations are interspersed, detailed, and fit well with the text. The text is ideal for early chapter book readers or for reading aloud to younger children. It does a great job of reaching its audience and will appeal to most. Fans of Disney, princesses, and short stories will want to pick this one up.

I may be biased but this is definitely a 5☆ read. This feels like an ode to my childhood, especially since my birthday just passed a few days ago. It is a timely reminder of being thankful to my younger self for choosing to be kind and courageous in every aspect because I grew up in the world of Disney princesses. Every single Princess reminded me of being selfless, choosing to be kind, stepping up to be brave, loving without limits and best of all, think with your heart.
I love how each story captured the personality of the distinctive characters. Specially loved the stories of Belle, Rapunzel and Anna. Also, the little stories by girls and boys who give back really brought me to tears. If kids can do so much, we as adults have no reason not to.

This book is perfect. The stories are absolutely wonderful and the art is so so gorgeous. Everytime I read original stories about these royals I love them even more, if that's somehow possible. I love how they highlight their amazing qualities and show that they are inspiring and great role models. They even got cultural consultants for the stories that needed one. My favourites from these stories were Tiana's, Belle's, Rapunzel's, Pocahontas's, Anna's its hard to decide! 💓✨

I enjoyed some of the stories more than others, but I guess that’s the beauty of it- a little something for everyone. No matter who “your Princess” is. The Illustrations are beautiful and so are the messages of kindness.

New Princess stories! I totally eat these up as a HUGE Disney Princess fan. I love the illustrations. I did enjoy them. I loved the little extras telling the traits of the princesses and the challenges to us such as how do we help our community or how do we help others.
Some other thoughts:
