With barely more than a month to go before the Olympics, Kokoro finally bites the bullet and gets surgery on his ankle. Now, he wants Chitose to undergo the operation her heart needs, even if it means she won’t be by his side at the Olympics to cast the spell for him. But while Kokoro’s recovering and Chitose’s fretting over whether or not to go through with her own procedure, skaters from around the world start to arrive in Sochi. Kokoro is already in for the challenge of his life, and things are about to get even more complicated when Team Kijinami runs into another unexpected hurdle!
The way this series has progressed up to this point has truly been a joy! Not only is the skating art absolutely beautiful, the story is a beautiful story about growing up, going after what you want, and the people who support you no matter what. I can't wait to see how this one wraps up as well. It's truly a wonderful series.
Man, this series really picked up the pace! A few of the volumes in the middle were fun but not really moving much forward, but everything kicks off in this one!
First, Kokoppe finally decides to have surgery on his foot in order to hopefully skate better in the Olympics. At the same time, Chitose is struggling with her congenital heart condition to the point where she needs to finally have the surgery she's been putting off. The problem with this is that her surgery will require her to miss the Olympics and thus not be there to cast the spell on Kokoppe in time for his skate. The pair are dealing with their own self-confidence issues and are trying to figure out how to support one another on the most stressful and important days of their lives. It feels realistic in a way, in that they're in love but learning they sometimes have to sacrifice things whether they want to or not, and how to keep pushing forward through these roadblocks.
This was a fantastic volume as aside from the aforementioned situation above, there are tons of small storylines involving side characters we've all grown to enjoy. Taiga is inspired by the power of horniness, Tamura has to step in to help someone else reach their Olympic dreams and Kyle and Louis are coming to Sochi with the eyes of the world on them while they get pushed out for younger, more talented skaters from their own countries.
I really enjoyed this volume! There's a lot to follow and I enjoyed getting to step away from Kokoppe in order to see how his friends and rivals are preparing for the Olympics alongside him. His approach is different from everyone else, so seeing how the different skaters deal with the Olympics from a mental and emotional standpoint leads to a lot of interesting story beats.
This series is so cute and enjoyable to read, I can't wait for Kokoppe to skate! Blog / Twitter / Instagram
ARGH TOTALLY PREDICTABLE BUT STILL HIGHLY ANNOYING CLIFFHANGER
I also noticed in this volume - the trigger was thinking how skilfully Chitose's first person voice is woven in - how very good Ogawa-sensei is at POV. It's so seamless that I never even thought about how many narrative voices the series contains and how completely fluent those transitions are.
Really terrific, breathlessly paced volume that covers the start of the Olympics. Kokoro is there without Chitose, who is recovering from cardiac surgery, but she’s supporting him from afar. Maria and Taiga are too cute! Kokoro wants to speak with his father after his program ends, and it looks like he may finally be brave enough to stand up for himself and the future he wants.
This is about Kokoro and Chitose. We are building up to the ending in the next volume, and I can't wait. The character development between the last book and this one were great. Looking forward to the last volume!
I really liked it! Huge focus on the Olympics competition, the skaters, and the sports drama, and not as much focus on the romance with Se-chan. Super excited for the final volume to come out!
