Who is Jan Braai? His real name is Jan Scannell and he lives to braai (barbeque). He started the National Braai Day initiative in South Africa in 2007 and his aim is to create a national celebration of the one activity all South Africans have in common, regardless of race, language, gender or wealth, cooking over a fire. He holds the world record for the longest braai. He has a TV show about, yes, you guessed it, braaing.

Although it might seem weird to rate a cook book, I feel that this one definitely deserves a review. I think Jan Braai might be rather unknown outside of South Africa, but for all the non-South Africans out there, if you like Jamie Oliver, you will love Jan Braai.
He has got that same thing of writing little stories about his recipes, where they come from, what they mean to him or others and there is always tips and tricks that go beyond the recipe itself. I love these kind of cook books because they are more than just a collection of recipes; they have more soul. I tend to pick them up again and again, just to read through them and look at the really yummy photos...like you would with your favourite book.
This is my second cook book by Jan Braai and I have tried lots of his recipes in the past years. Some of them have become my default recipes for certain dishes and I have never had anything that did not taste delicious. Also, while his focus lies on braaing (barbecuing...), I have tried lots of the recipes on the stove or in the oven. Maybe not the best thing to do for a beginner in the kitchen, but the book also inspires you to do your own thing and make your own creations.
