A leaked sex tape. A fake relationship. A return home.
Ryder swore he was never going back to Otter Bay after leaving at seventeen, but when his life is set on fire in LA, he finds himself ducking into a cozy café on Main Street with his tail between his legs.
Unfortunately, he also finds that his best friend, the first boy he ever had a crush on, grew up hot.
And then, because he can’t stop messing up his own life, he kisses him.
And that’s not even the worst of his problems.
Ward never expected to see Ryder again, but he can’t pretend he’s not happy about it. The life he’s built in Otter Bay is all prepped for his dream of settling down, but the little cabin he built with his own two hands never hosts anyone overnight.
With Ryder back in town he’s forced to confront some old feelings he was never brave enough to share as a teenager, a regret he’s had to live with for the past ten years with a Ryder-shaped hole in his heart.
The fact that saving Ryder’s career means pretending to be his boyfriend isn’t helping at all.
Sean Ashcroft likes rainy days, white hot chocolates (don't knock it 'til you've tried it!) and boys kissing in books. He currently resides in Australia, all the way down at the bottom of the mainland in a sleepy little seaside town.
He writes sweet, hot books about sweet, hot boys who absolutely deserve each other.
Sean Ashcroft has mastered these low-stakes, super fluffy romances, and i usually enjoy his writing style quite a lot. this one, though, didn't quite reach the heights of the first two books in the series for me. it was pretty cute, but i think part of what made this a less-than-stellar read for me is that i just have little to no interest in reading about actors or celebrities; i want to be able to relate to the MCs at least a little bit when i'm reading romance, i guess nn.
this was probably more of a 3.5 for me, but i think my expectations going into this not quite being met warrants the 3 star rating.
I liked this but I didn't love it as much as I loved the first book in the series. It was sweet and cute and everything you expect from a book by this author but it was just lacking... something. Maybe it was too slow, I can't really put my finger on it.
I also got the weirdest flashback thinking I had read this story before... so that's weird.
Contains: Childhood Bestfriend to Fake Boyfriend to Lovers. Love scenes are soooo hot, intense chemistry. Most awkward coming out ever is awarded to Ward. No angst. HEA. Can be read as a standalone.
If you are a fan of Sean Ashcroft's writing, you will not be disappointed. Here we meet two wiser, calmer characters who complement each other, lift each other up. A little less humor, but all is replaced by a lot of feelings.
Love scenes so well described and oh god sooo hot. The chemistry between the two is sparkling. The feelings and all the love overflow everywhere. We see the good and the bad side of the theater. Professional and sentimental decisions and questioning are at the heart of the action.
***Spoiler alert*** *May contains spoilers* Upon returning to his hometown, Ryder reconnects with his first crush and best friend Ward. Ward discovered his bisexuality too little too late, he is very happy to be there for his friend and crush Ryder. When a photo of a kiss after a drunken night is leaked, they decide to fake a relationship. But feelings and their relationship status confuse them. They have difficulty reading each other's motives. It becomes much more difficult to show, proves and admit their true feelings. When they reconnect, it is a teenage dream come true. And it is smoking hot. A return to the depths of his love for the stage. Ryder discovers who he can be, what he can have, his options, his reality that he can achieve if he make it possible. I fear the moment when reality catches up with them because it will catch up with them eventually... When Ryder break down, his emotional turmoil...... Honestly, I am not an emotional reader. So the moment when Ryder breaks down, really surprised me with his choice of words, his despair, his helplessness, his feelings, my heart broke with him; I was as heartbroken as he was. The epilogue is soo Beautiful and so well writing. HEA.
Bonus scene Proposal. So sweet!
*I received an ARC copy without any superior request. This is my only honest opinion.*
What I love most about Sean's books are how unapologetically romantic they are inside. Every story just makes me smile in my heart at how much the characters love each other. Ward and Ryder are the perfect couple who may have taken some time to figure it out, but when they did the love exploded all over the pages. Reading their story is like watching the perfect fairytale come true. Who better to be in love with than your childhood best friend who knows you better than anyone. Gah! I just felt warm inside while reading this book and wishing for my own person charming in life.
I always enjoy Sean Aschrofts' romance. This one has the best friends who have secretly been in love with eachother the whole time paired with the fake relationship trope. Ward was absolutely precious , I couldn't get enough of him 🥰
"Faking" was actually promising. For the most part. It was pleasantly almost angst-free, a bit fluffy without being too sugary, the MCs were - if not exactly original or mould-breaking - at least endearing. There was however something missing. That final spark that makes me involved as a reader and feel with the MCs was sadly absent. Also I am getting a bit tired of the constant "he deserves better than me"-that seems to be inherent in so many romances. And I was surprised that there is still a bonus story somewhere online when the last two chapters had already read like bonus stories. How many glimpses into their hea do we need? It just suddenly adds too much glacing to an otherwise tasty cake. I would have settled for a solid 3 Stars (well not more, because I wasn't invested enough) otherwise but I always go into diabetic shock at overly sugary endings.
Every book in this series is identical. Literally Best friends, lost touch at 17 and back together at 27. Some kind of fake relationship trope. One is bi, the other is gay. One lives somewhere else and the other is in otter bay. Fake relationship turns real, but they move away anyway. Then they come running home and move in and buy a business. But I guess don’t change a good thing? So sweet and cute, 4 stars
What a comeback for the author that basically got me into the genre (shout out to the Goode Boys series which is still my absolute favourite)!
After a longer hiatus Sean Ashcroft gives us another instalment set in Otter Bay, a quite little town away from all the chaos and noise of the outside world. This time we follow Ryder - an actor who left for LA 10 years prior and is now back running away from a not-so-small scandal - and Ward - a strong yet surprisingly soft and caring carpenter, Ryder’s best friend since childhood. When the circumstances get them back together the old sparks start shooting everywhere and it doesn’t take long for the two to revisit their past feelings.
As the title already kinda spoils it we are given a fake boyfriend story, which is Sean’s staple and it works. The feelings are real, the chemistry believable, it is a really fun and easy read. I’m also glad that the author strayed a bit from his usual choice of main conflict for the characters (it is still quite predictable, but it wasn’t the most obvious choice). The writing style doesn’t disappoint either, the book flows well.
What always shines in Sean’s books are the side characters. They have their place in the story, but they rarely are one-dimensional. I loved Liz, I loved Ward’s dad, of course I adored Seth. Sadly I was kinda hoping for a big reunion of the previous MCs as kind of a checkpoint on their lives, but that will have to wait for another occasion.
The whole series is definitely worth a read (in case you haven’t picked up the previous two books), but each one can also be read as a standalone.
Overall it’s a solid comeback with a lovely story and great chemistry. Can’t wait to see where we’ll be taken on our next journey.
(I’ve received an ARC of this book from the author, but they had no influence on the content of this review.)
I feel like we were missing a prologue chapter or something. The story would've benefitted from giving us more exposition around Ryder and his life before the sex tape was leaked and then showing us how things changed after it got out. As it is right now, I have no frame of reference for how devastated he is because we just start off with him already coming back to Otter Bay, having already dealt with the brunt of the initial impact (the specifics of which are unknown to us)
Then we already get an accidental kiss and it's only 11% in? Where's the pining? The build up? Ryder left his best friend and had no intentions of coming back to Otter Bay, but only a few days back, he's suddenly willing to go to a gay bar (which is shocking in itself as he just had a gay sex tape leak) and is kissing Ward.
Something like that would've been a great catalyst to start off the typical romance shenanigans, but it only works if there is proper set up. And there was not nearly enough set up in the story at this point to make that kiss feel anything close to satisfying.
The story was basically asking for a bit of a burn before things escalated (like Ryder and Ward catching up, reconciling and re-learning how to be friends after spending so much time away from each other) by instead we get an 11% kiss.
Ryder comes from a small coastal community called Otter Bay. He wanted out from when he was very young and he was going to be a Hollywood star. He ends up making a name for himself doing quickie romance movies. Ryder retreats home after a sex tape is made public which also outs him. Ward, a complete marshmallow, has been Ryder's best friend forever, even while Ryder has been distant. They both crushed on each other in high school but never, ever let the other one know.
Ryder's agent, Astrid, decides they should be fake boyfriends which will be the quickest way to rehabilitate Ryder's reputation. Will they be able to do it? Or will they start crushing on each other again?
There's a good amount of growth on Ryder's part in the book. He takes a good, hard look at his life and what he really wants. Ward also has to step out of his shyness and willingness to put others' needs first. Both are lovely characters and a lot of fun to spend time with.
(Review based on ARC provided by the author but I've bought my own copy of the book--gotta support the author so they write more! This is a fair and unbiased review.)
This is hands down my favorite Sean Ashcroft book to date! The hiatus was worth the much anticipated wait!
I wasn't even finished the first chapter when I lost my heart to Ward!
Ryder returns to his hometown and back into the arms of his best friend Ward, after a viral video threatens to ruin his career. The love these two have for each other is literal perfection. Ward has missed his best friend after him being gone for years to pursue his acting career. He is ready to support Ryder in whatever he needs during his time away and is absolutely disgusted at what was done to him in his most private moments. He willingly steps in to play Ryder's boyfriend to help him get his career back on track no matter if he looses his heart in the process. Ryder finally after all his years of pining for his"straight" best friend gets the kiss he always dreamt of. Both just wishing it was real the whole time. These two are so passionate together it is beautiful! They're beautiful together. Seriously a must read! Anything by Sean is must read but this was off the charts perfect with these characters and even the ones in the background that are introduced. Truly wonderful !
Oh, I have no complaints about this one--like the first two in the series it's a wonderful romance centering on the ambiance the Oregon village of Otter Bay surrounds everything that happens--especially the romance that develops between childhood besties Ryder and Ward. Just wonderful.
However, like the first two in the series the cover threw me for a loop. I could not decide who was on the covers in the first two because none of the four men were described like the ones on the cover. In this one, however, we have a guy with a man bun--and that's supposed to be Ward, the laid back blue collar carpenter who is described in the narrative as not quite as lithe and trendy looking. Rather, the body looks like it belongs to movie star Ryder, so maybe the creative artists merged the two.
Whatever.
This is five-star all the way, gets you from the start, breaks your heart here and there, tempts you to strangle both MCs at times, but always wanting to know how this is going to work.
And with that we can only hope that there are more chapters to come--and that if so, the covers would be more to my liking. LOL!
I loved faking so much. I was lucky enough to receive an arc in exchange for my honest review. This book did not disappoint. Ward was a local of Otter Bay, and Ryder is a former resident who moved to LA for his big break and returns home disgraced when he gets outed. From there Ward as his childhood best friend agrees to pose as his boyfriend. This gives Ryder a chance to save his career. The two discover there very real feelings and faking turns into something more. We get a sweet steamy and romantic read with everything you're looking for. Ryder find that maybe LA doesn't have everything he's looking for, and home isn't what he thought it was. This is another must read by Sean Ashcroft that really delivers.
Childhood besties, friends to lovers, fake boyfriends, close proximity, small town romance combined into a perfect blend of humor, steam, and feels. Ward and Ryder’s story is a hug for your heart.
Ward is just about the most perfect flannel-clad prince of a fake boyfriend Ryder could hope for in his hour of need, but the need is mutual, even if it’s not as obvious to Ryder sometimes. In Otter Bay, everything just falls into place, and while sometimes that can feel over the top (even in a romance), any other outcome would just feel wrong here.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review.
Faking By Sean Ashcroft Main Characters: Ryder and Ward I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author. 5 out of 5 stars I thought this was a beautiful m/m love story. This book was about 2 men who grew up together as best friends and who loved each other but without telling the other one. So really friends to lovers. I loved the characters and Sean's writing is very sensitive and a slow build-up to great chemistry between these two. I do love Sean's writing style and it has been almost a year since his last book. Welcome back Sean and a great love story!
Ward is such a sweetheart and exactly what Ryder always needed. I like friends to lovers stories even though I sometimes find them hard to read, especially when the friends are secretly in love with each other for years, but keeping their feelings to themselves, afraid of ruining what they have.
The story is so sweet and the MCs so loveable. But with all those fluffy feelings I could also constantly feel the sadness and tightness in the heard, both of them just waiting for the other shoe to drop and the end of their respite. I'm just glad that the pining is kept to a minimum in Sean Ashcroft stories 😊 I love happy, fluffy, romantic stories that brighten my cloudy day 😊
I absolutely loved this book! Ward and Ryder are such awesome characters and are just perfect for each other! Such a beautiful and caring friendship/relationship even after all the years apart. Ward’s dad was terrific also! Where do I find me a Ward?? ❤️ Lol. This is a fantastic series but this was my favorite! Sean did an amazing job with the writing and really made you feel like you knew the characters! Very enjoyable and I highly recommend! Received arc and am voluntarily leaving an honest review
If you liked Lucy Lennox's "Say You'll Be Nine", you'll like this one too. Both have handy marshmallow guys willing to help anyone in a fake relationship with an actor to help their career. In this one, they're old friends who have loved each other forever.
Normally, I don't like romances with people who have been friends since they were younger than 12, but I was able to mostly ignore it in this book because there's no angst and little reminiscing.
This was such a sweet friends to lovers book. I loved the strength of the friendship between Ryder & Ward and what they would each do for the other. The writing flowed really well and made me not want to put my kindle down. I absolutely loved the side characters, especially Seth, and I hope he gets a book soon. I can't wait to see what else Sean has planned for the future of Otter Bay.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily gave my honest review.
I never really got into the story though. They are sweet and they’re in love and maybe it was just too much? I mean, actors get married and have families all the time so I didn’t really understand why it was such a big problem for them. And I couldn’t understand how Ryder didn’t know long before. That bugged me, so it didn’t seem authentic. But the writing is good, and I’m sure a lot of people would like it.
Another beautiful love story from Sean Ashcroft (so happy to see you back with us- it’s been lonely without your voice).
Ryder and Ward are the embodiment of what I think we all hope a perfect love can be. Laughs, tears, and all the deep feels in another instant favorite.
A good read, but not as good as the first two in the series. It didn’t seem to have a lot of tension - it was like both of the MC’s were in love right at the start of the book and just kind of “fell” into the relationship. It was, all in all, not a bad story just not up to the same level as the others.
Another great read from one of my favorite authors. This one is a childhood friends to lovers. I love how the author has developed this series, with Seth as the connecting piece between the books. This novel also includes some of the Christmas magic that the author is so good at.
One thing you can guarantee about Sean's works is that characters wilnl be adorable and you'll fall a little bit in love with them. Pleased to report that 'Faking' is no exception. Hugely entertaining, great pace, some hot scenes and of course an HEA. What more could you ask?
I love a fake to real boyfriend story! Faking gives us that plus the friends to lovers part...win/win! This story is sweet and sexy with little to no angst. Just what I love to read. Ward and Ryder’s story will give you all the feels and leave you very satisfied! I'm a fan!
So glad Sean is back and with a visit to Otter Bay! Sean is my go to for feel good romance, and this one didn’t let me down. Best friends to soul mates. Love it! Can’t wait to see what is next for Otter Bay!
