A history of the Cimarron and Northwestern Railway Company, a logging railroad that operated from 1907 to 1930 in Colfax County, New Mexico, on land which later became part of the Philmont Scout Ranch. The book also describes the history of the Continental Tie and Lumber Company, the logging company that owned the C&N, and other businesses that shipped freight over its rails. The book concludes with an account of Boy Scouts reconstructing a short section of track and some railroad structures on the former C&N right of way as part of a railroad-themed living history project.
Clear, informative and thoroughly researched. Interesting to fans of logging railroads and anyone interested in the history of the area around Cimarron, NM and the Philmont Scout Ranch.
A comprehensive history of the Cimarron and Northwestern Railway Company (and tangentially its logging company parent, the Continental Tie & Lumber Company), a fascinating microcosm of early 20th century New Mexico and a pivotal part of the history of Philmont Scout Ranch. The authors combine authoritative research, historical photographs, larger-than-life personalities, and insightful analysis for a very readable account. I especially appreciated that they referenced the current Philmont locations for historical events. My only wish is that I had read this volume prior to my 2019 Philmont trek along many of the canyons once followed by the C&N Ry, especially Metcalf Station!
