In another life, Anna Velfman graduated from Stirling University with an Environmental Science degree and moved to the Shetland islands having just got married. Later she returned to mainland Scotland to train as a teacher. However, having written online for years as a way to help manage her dyslexia, she decided she would be happier aiming to write full time.
When she is not writing, she can be found gaming on the PC she built, painting and sewing (badly,) watching anime and Kdramas, walking her dog, riding her bright blue ebike, or chatting with her readers on discord. She loves living in Scotland, where she is raising two boys with her husband.
She has a bi-monthly (sometimes) Podcast called Writer Rambles where she talks about her writing and chats to other authors about their work.
Very happy for another installment in the Pler Series. I've been a fan of Lanna for awhile, but I feel like she really comes into her own in this book. The world-building in this whole series really pulls you in as a reader, and the palace intrigue keeps you turning the page. Fingers crossed this isn't the final installment in the series!
(Note: I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This book also contains mature content and allusions to non-consentual encounters.)
Lanna of the Clans is back--or at least she would be, if life at the palace didn't have her so confused. This hard-hitting third installment of what used to be the Pler Trilogy brings readers a more introspective Lanna and an impeccable balance of action and character development. On top of that, it’s an excellent and binge-able read.
Avalanche lands firmly in science-fantasy territory (at last!). Gone are the teasers of another civilization; readers learn a whole lot more about where Lucas came from and how Pler functions (hint: it involves more than a little tech). Both technology and its breakdown are to be feared in the Pler Series, as the marvels of that civilization behind the curtain may prove to be horrors for Lanna. Absolutely nothing in her world is simple. I also grew to like Lucas even more than I did in Icedancer. He just might be my new favorite character.
A steamy scene very early in the book (there's no dawdling in Avalanche, and the bedroom door is open) leaves Lanna to reckon with the truth: proud, independent Lanna has a price. Forced into the position of sacrificial lamb, Avalanche takes time to ask what Lanna is worth to herself.
Though there’s a feeling of resolution at the end of Avalanche, I finished reading and immediately wanted the next book. This one is truly a wild (yet thoughtful) ride.
This book was a satisfying conclusion to the Pler series. I enjoyed learning all the “secrets” behind how this fictional world really works. When I first started reading this series, it had an ancient history/fantasy vibe, but by the last book, I realized that this series also has cool sci-fi elements. Lana of the Clans is a character to root for! She goes through so much in this series. I loved her growth as a character. There’s a feeling of closure at the end of this book, which for me as a reader is a must, but I do believe more stories can be told from these characters and world. I’m eager to see more from Velfman!
After the first two books in the saga, I was desperately waiting for the next instalment of our badass heroine. Avalanche did not disappoint, there were some serious plot hooks I did not see coming and were so enjoyable, I could barely tear myself away from the kindle. If anything, it still leaves me nagging for when we'll see more of Lanna!
Lots of twists and surprises for characters you root for sometimes, and sometimes not. Book 3 done, now on to 4. I might think I can guess the end, but I'd probably be wrong!
