This book did keep me engaged and at times I wanted to keep reading at others I wanted to stop. Only 4 stars as it is a disturbing topic and at times I felt it was too graphic. I wish this was not happening in our world today.

Great plot, editing errors

This was a great plot, lots of excitement. It was a bit aggravating because of the editing errors. Sometimes pronouns and character names were incorrect. I had to reread some sections to make sense of it.

This is book two of the Kat Beckman series and sees Kat still recovering from the events of her first big breaking take down story, finding out her husband Steve married her for the information his employers Apex could blackmail her for and their own son Jack was taken to do so, while his own mother Laura was given cancer! Her son is only five and had a rough time being taken and he is still undergoing therapy to help recover from it. Hopefully his young age will help with that. Kat has only been doing some easy, lightweight stories since, with her editor and now close friend Van. They are approached in a local park by a desperate dad, who wants their help to find his missing eleven year old daughter Carlye. Tim and Alana Morgan sent their daughter to summer camp, to help her make friends and get out of her shell a bit before starting middle school. They did everything right, getting references and checking into the camp, before sending her there. A couple of weeks in, she missed a call home and when her parents checked with the camp the next morning, they were told she couldn’t be found.

There has been no ransom call, no contact from whoever took her, and she definitely had no reason to be a runaway. Her parents have tried the police with little progress and were going to get a P.I. involved, when Tim recalled the Apex story and Kat’s involvement in breaking the case wide open. Kat and Van start investigating and the more they do, the more it points towards Carlye and possibly many others like her are being trafficked for use by very wealthy men and their clients! Not a nice topic to read about and even worse for the young girls having to live through it! Carlye is not the first and she is unlikely to be the last. She is taken by someone she thought she could trust, passed onto another, until they reach the man she has been taken for, to be part of his collection of beautiful young things. But not just to be looked at, but to be played with and shared with his friends and business partners, as perks of the job. I won’t spell it out, but you know where this is going.

Those involved in this trafficking don’t care about the merchandise, especially if it disobeys or breaks the rules and expected behaviour. The man who is collecting these pretty ‘things’ is extremely wealthy and even has his own private airline company, so can easily transport his collection and has many people in high places and law enforcement in his pockets. Any of the girls who cause trouble are never seen again. Murder is a common place part of their business. Carlye takes herself into her own mind to survive what happens to her but can’t think about her parents or younger brother much, as she cries too much and that gets her into trouble. Kat gets caught up in the case, making her wonder what she would do if it had been Jack taken and realising that she will do anything to make sure Carlye makes it back to her family, no matter what it costs. What she doesn’t realise is how far those who have her will go. They make threats to her son’s life and try to intimidate her as well.

They may be willing to fight to keep their sick sideline secret from the authorities and be able to continue it as and where they want, but if they push Kat, it will only make her more determined to stick with her investigation until she finds them and ensures they are all punished for what they have done. She wants to save Carlye and any other children who have been trafficked for the sole sick purposes of these rich men. Kat and Van are in the sights of these sick men and will have the lives of them, their families and friends put in danger, if they continue. Is it worth the danger, all for the life of one missing girl? Carlye has been missing for almost two weeks now and whether she will be found alive is what is pushing Kat and Van to try and locate her. The FBI are now involved and the case is finally being taken very seriously. Who will survive and how badly they will be affected by the challenges they face in this story, are uncertain and some very disturbing scenes are played out. The topic of this book could be very disturbing for some readers, but it is one that exposes something that we need to be more aware of and is happening all around the world. A very intense read, with a determined main character doing what she does best, uncovering illegal goings on and catching those responsible, who thought they were above the law! Hard hitting, but a very necessary story. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Not believable as written…

The story of child sex trafficking needs telling, that much I do believe with all my heart. But no way would a kids camp where kids are being taken from, where kids are giving police the names of two people who took them, where it’s discovered the camp director has a sketchy background at best and only existed for two years- why would this camp be allowed to keep running, and not closed down immediately?

I believe kids can be taken in this way. Just not allowed to KEEP taking them, when their names are known. I read 33%, and couldn’t finish, because there’s also the fact that the journalists must inform the not bright cops that the kids are being trafficked (as if cops let journalists run their investigations like this). Story needs telling, sadly, just not like this.

Lastly, character names change spelling (Lily to Lilly, back to Lily), and even wrong character names used (Carlye sits down and waits for herself to bring her a sandwich, instead of Lily, whose name should’ve been used). I have a saying – if you don’t care about your characters enough to get their names right, keep spelling their names right, etc., why should I care about them?
I am marking this is read, so I don’t accidentally borrow again.

Unrealistic

I'm not sure the public, let alone the FBI believes an embedded journalist is that awe inspiring. Many times the police (etc) said they were being unconventional and allowing embedded reporters to work with them. The storyteller made it seem like many girls disappeared from the camp yet no one talked to the parents of those girls. Nathan was just allowed to keep doing whatever and wasn't brought in for questioning despite Holly naming him as the person who kidnapped her? The FBI didn't secure the perimeter of the compound? No other parents looked for their missing girls? So many "I'm sure, how ridiculous" moments. I'm not going to finish the series. On to another author.

When eleven year old Carlye Morgan is kidnapped from her summer camp terror has only begun. When the father of Carlye tracks Kat Beckman down at the park and begs for her help to find his daughter she finally agrees. This is a story that is hard to read at times because it deals with sexual abuse and other things. But it is a really good story that tells it like it probably is for these children. ** Warning** it could be a trigger. I look forward to reading more from this author. This story continues with Kat, Jack, and Steve's mother Laura. Steve is in prison for the rest of his natural life for his part in the cancer cure blackmail scam. A couple has asked for help in finding their daughter, who is missing from a camp they sent her to help her with her social skills. It's been fourteen days and word from her. The camp says they don't know where she is and she must of runoff. But her parents know better than that. Kat and Tim get help from a surprising source, but is it too little too late? You will need to read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.

A little bothered

While I have extremely enjoyed the writings of K. J. Kalis and this series I have some serious questions that bother me. The stories are filled with an intensity that holds the reader glued to the page or holding their breath. The likeness to reality is a given. But what troubles me the most is that the main character is a "reporter". Not even an investigative one at that. She only spent a month embedded in Afghanistan. Why not make her a P. I. or affiliated with some governmental entity. Then her reason for being involved in these mission would be more realistic.

This is a mystery type of book and when Carlye is kidnapped they call in Kat to solve the mystery. They are working against the clock to find the people that are doing this to girls. The story is told in a perfect way to were you are on the edge of your seat. The discription that is put forwards in the book was eye opening. This book was well written with fantastic characters. I could not put it down. What an incredible book.

This fast-paced book is a wonderful introduction (for me) to this author. I fell in love with the author’s writing style and the fact that she is so descriptive about everything to the extent that I was able to really feel for the characters and what they were going through. I read this book over night as I was unable to put it down once I had started reading it. Fantastic book.

Harrowing story

A story that will have you spelbound. Trafficking of children for sexual exploitation. Caleyt, an 11 year old, is kidnapped, her parents are frantic to find her. Kat and Van agree to help find her. The FBI joins the search. I could not put this book.down. It took 14 days to find her. Days of torture, requiring psychologist help needed for the able future for the whole family.

Right out of the bag, their new dog is Woof, how does one explain name carryover. In reality Jack should have given him a name! Regardless of this she can write one whopper of a story. I must say she really doesn’t give the FBI much credit when describing the house raid. With them starting a fire the feds would have seen it, gasoline blazes! Finally Laura the gramma playing in the sandbox, K.J. You lost it. 5

A non-put-downable book

I enjoyed this story but it was obvious from the get-go that it would be describing scenes of very young girls being kidnapped and used for sex by a monstrous billionaire who had no scruples. He treated these girls as he once did his thoroughbreds. He was brought down by a reporter and her boss along with the FBI and special agents after looking into a young girls disappearance. Great read!

Engaging Trafficking Read

As a retired LEO, I appreciated the authors detail in describing police procedure. The story kept me captivated and allows the general public to experience, in a small way, the horrors that accompany trafficked children as well as the frustration the officers and the families endure.

Fourteen Days

Well written and a great read. Fast paced, thought provoking and heartbreaking. . There are so many hero's who are fighting behind the scene to help get those who are caught up in this horrible situation, out and back home with their families. We need more heroes such as Kat and Van.

Good story but poor editing

The research and story about human trafficking were well done, but the lack of proper editing grated on me every other page. Most notable was when the author referred to the victim's parents as "the Morgan's." I believe I learned in third grade NEVER to use an apostrophe + s to create a plural.

Another Winner from KJ

As always with a Kalis book, Fourteen Days was one that was hard to put down even to sleep. Loved the characters you're supposed to love and hated the characters you're supposed to hate. They were certainly well done though. Great, but disturbing storyline. So very sad to think this kind of thing is really happening. Ready for Kat book 3.

Such an incredible transition in book 2 of this series. Although the subject matter is tragic, the story and characters are believable. I’m enjoying this series immensely and cannot wait to move onto book 3!

Book about sex trafficking

This book was very hard to read with so many details of the abuse the young girls suffered at the hands of maniacs. I had to skim through the abuse details.

Needs an editor... between "the Morgan's" as a plural throughout the book and journalists and law enforcement officers investigating child sex trafficking who "grin", "giggle", and make light of things inappropriately and incongruously throughout the story - I cringe.

A heart pounding book about the sinister world of child trafficking. It was a difficult read knowing this really does go on all over the world. I had a hard time putting this book down and read it in two evenings.

One of my best reads ever

This book was wonderful . It focused on a topic that is real life. It kept me wanting to read more, and the sadness that was true life, happening to these young innocent girls. Thank you for writing on a horrendous topic.

Heart breaking

The book was well written. However, it was very difficult to read due to the subject matter. It'll be a long time before I can forget the horror of this book! And to think this goes on more and more in the US everyday.

Excellent

Fourteen days is a harrowing fight in the sex trafficking of young girls. It's devious people who do this, but thankfully there are the people who do GREAT work tracking and some times saving these poor stolen sex slaves

To really to love

This work was so real too me it took the pleasure of reading away and replaced it with shame on our society and shame on me for being a member of mankind.
Unfortunately I have met people who I could imagine doing those things.
