Kate THIS IS NOT YOUR ROUTINE ROM-COM. I mean, it’s close. I can see why you’d think that. It started with the usual. I got fired and cheated on in the span of two hours. I wanted to forget my troubles with the sexy stranger at the bar, so yes, I approached him. And yes, he definitely made me forget my pathetic life that night. Until three days later when I was officially introduced to said stranger—as his new assistant. The real twist? He thinks I was sent here to kill him. I wasn't—of course. It was all a big mix-up involving bourbon, supermodels, and government secrets labeled CLASSIFIED. I've never even held a gun before, but apparently I give off Russian spy vibes. I’m not the girl who grew up craving excitement. Masked men breaking into my apartment and trying to kill me was never in my five year plan, but if we survive, maybe I can convince Mr. Big Shot to make me a part of his.
Luke I’ve never been fooled by an enemy agent—until her.
This is an action packed rom-com complete with a mystery murder, a forbidden boss/employee romance, a badass best friend, and (of course) the injured heroine trope. It is book one in the Keep Your Secrets Series, but it can be read as a complete standalone.
Mj also goes by Ariel. She's a native Texan who lives in Hawaii with her dreamy husband Justin and two kiddos. She can't resist pairing a damaged heroine with a southern gentleman who manages to tear down her walls one brick at a time. The men in her books will open every door and carry every bag, just like Justin does. She's eternally indebted to her writing, which rescued her from the darkest place she has ever been. Her lifelong dream is to one day write all her books in a house by the sea, with a wine cellar that's never empty and her imaginary characters somehow becoming her real-life friends.
By 36%, I haven’t laughed or even snorted at anything.
The entire thing is like oatmeal - bland. The delivery is robotic - mechanical. The pacing is slower than her pet turtle. That first sex scene… awkward, stiff (not the good kind,) and underwhelming in every way. Why even bother to write a sex scene without the use of any anatomical reference other than “his thickness” and her nipples. Eyeroll. Don’t skate around it. Either keep it clean or write the fucking scene. Otherwise, it’s just an irritation to most readers who either do or don’t want sex scenes.
Anyway… she’s lost her job and her cheating ex. Goes to a bar and bangs a stranger. Within three days, she coincidentally lands a new job as a personal assistant to said stranger. Million to one, but I’ll go with it.
Then, the stupid takes itself up to the top of a cliff and takes a flying leap into completely idiotic.
Insert SAF…
If you were a paranoid ex Navy SEAL turned billionaire business man with countless enemies, spies, and mafia dudes trying to kill you, would you just hire a random personal assistant to be in your personal space and business? No? Well, this mofo doesn’t just randomly hire someone…. She is hired “on the spot” via a phone interview. <<<< Beta reader and editing missing this gigantic plot nonsense aside, why/how could any writer think that would make a lick of sense?!?
The writing r/t the FMC and her BFF is like some teen sitcom…
“Wow, really? That’s amazing! Where to?” “I have no idea. He’s going to pick me up.” She smirks, getting up to start cleaning her station. “I hope he’s a good one. He’s so hot.” “Yes, almost too hot to be true.”
Save me~
The writing in general is just horribly boring…
Example: Three pages for a Starbucks run that does ZERO to advance the story, character development, nada. It reads like ‘insert a plot point’ and then surround it with the most mundane shit possible until another plot point is inserted. No flow.
The character actions are childish….
Example: On her second day of work, a woman visits her boss, the MMC. She assumes they may be having sex just because the woman is attractive. What does she do?
Against all logic and reason, I creep back up to the door to listen very carefully for any noises that could give away their actions behind it. My ear is pressed up to the cold surface, and I hold my breath to eliminate any outside noise.
Example: The MMC calls her by her first name, which must mean something prolific according to both characters. <<< She works for him, why the fuck wouldn’t he know her first name?
The whole she’s a spy from his POV verses he don’t remember me from her POV is exhausting. Same shit on repeat over and over and over. It’s absurd enough with it being a mantra.
I can’t take no mo….
By the time the FB sleuth HR busy body comes out of the woodwork to open the FMC’s eyes to the engagement and then secret FB symbols meanings behind him being a SEAL… I’m done.
I haven’t laughed. I haven’t swooned. I can barely manage to keep my eyes open. Typically, I find at least one good thing to say about even the worst of the worst… I’m at a complete loss here.

This was my second time reading a book by M.J. Hendrix and OH MY SHE DID IT AGAIN! THIS BOOK DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
When I first heard about it (on M.J. Hendrix’s Tik Tok), I thought it was going to be a “normal office love story” type of novel, where the main character meets a guy at a bar and then he ends up being her boss. And yeah, they meet and spend the night together and then she finds out he’s her new boss. BUT THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO THE STORY! Luke actually thinks Kate is there to kill him / spy on him. YES!! This book is action packed and I loved it.
The plot is amazing and every aspect of it connects so well. "Big Shot” also has just the right amount of spicy scenes & there are such fun, lighthearted moments. I was instantly hooked and I truly can’t wait to read the sequel.
Kate is such a relatable main character and I adored her personality. Speckles -- you’ll find out who they are when you read the book 😉 -- is such a cutie.
I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that Luke is not AT ALL your typical cocky, arrogant billionaire and I really enjoyed reading from his perspective as well.
What an amazing read!
I would also like to thank M.J. Hendrix for sending me an e-arc of “Big Shot” for review. I loved it. Thank you!

Esta foi a segunda vez que li um livro da M.J. Hendrix e OH MEU PAI ELA CONSEGUIU DE NOVO!
Amei. Obrigada!
Stars: 4.5/5 Tropes: office romance, forced proximity, one bed Spice: 2/5 Series: Keep Your Secrets Triggers: Hero: 4/5 Heroine: 4.5/5 Violence: 1.5/5 Dark: 0/5
I’m going to be honest and admit that I first heard about this book from the author’s tiktok. This will be my first read from Mj Hendrix and after Big Shot, it won’t be the last. When the author first described the story line, I thought it was going to be another office love story, but I was pleasantly surprised with the little twist! The book has a very specific humor—you’ll either find it absolutely hilarious or you won’t get the joke. This was a pretty light read, and an interesting to follow plot with a cute romance intertwined. Spice level is a 2 out of 5 because it was clear when they were doing it, but it wasn’t extremely descriptive. Also!! Not gonna lie, but I thought Becky was the spy and was taken for a turn when I found out it was Nikolai. I guess that’s in part to my trust issues when it comes to friendships, and that I’m a snob for relationships and hope for the best. (Becky’s extreme stalking skills also seemed sketch to me lol but I’m glad Kate found a friend in her). We don’t necessarily end in a cliffhanger, but it’s enough to want to continue to read the series and figure out who the actual mole was and why Reid was killed. My theory is that Garrison wasn’t the one who killed Reid, something we’re thought to believe based on Luke’s recap of Steelhart. I think that the way Luke recounted the shooting, was vague in a way, like he couldn’t entirely be reliable based on the conditions of when it happened. I would love it if anyone has any other theories of their own to share!! (One of my favorite chapters was when Kate was taken hostage and was talking everyone’s ear off and she got offended when Nikolai brought up Speckles).
Heroine: I absolutely adored Kate Dawson!! She’s such a relatable and adorable character—especially in the moments she talks to herself (weird but I do the same lol). She’s one of the few heroine characters I’ve found I can relate to in humor (I have a very specific sense of humor that not many get).
Hero: Luke Bradshaw, former Navy SEAL, now billionaire of Bradshaw Enterprises is constantly looking over his shoulder after what happened in his past. Drunk Luke is probably my favorite, like a little golden retriever who just wants love. I’m a sucker for brunettes with light colored eyes (and this man has green eyes!!).
——————————————————————— I received an ARC (Advanced ReaderCopy) of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. My opinions have not been influenced by the publisher or the author.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was really excited for this book, but it let me down. I didn’t like the storyline, when I first saw the TikTok videos about the book from the author I thought it was going to be an office romance.
The characters felt underdeveloped, some of the dialogue was cringy and juvenile.
I really wanted to like this book.
I received an arc in exchange for my honest review.
I honestly was looking forward to reading this book and I was highly dissapointed. This was really terrible . The characters had no life in them which made falling inlove with the characters completely impossible. Absolutely do not recommend.
This is the first book I received an Arc for and I had the best experience ever. I absolutely loved the book. and I also gained a new book boyfriend, who knew ex-navy seal's were so hot?
This book is about an ex-navy seal, Luke, who is paranoid and always looking behind his back, because of a mission went back, and now they are trying to kill him. Then he meets Kate, out of the blue in a bar. Things start to complicate, when she shows up two days later as his new PA. Luke is thorn between his feelings for her and his paranoia that she might be there to kill him for basically the entire book.
I would like to state, that the plot is genuinely interesting, i never got bored while reading and it was really well written. I just liked the whole idea of it. I have never read a book with so much coincidences before. I really understood both their thoughts and perspectives on the matter. We love a well written dual POV book.
The characters were also amazing. I liked that Luke wasn't described as the typical fallen hero, with PTSD and stuff, but he was really sweet and a good human being, behind all the fear and billion $. Kate's character really developed throughout the book. At first, she seemed really naive and weak, but she did kinda like "grow up" if that makes sense.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, it was really interesting and I never quite new what to expect. I can't wait for the second onee.
This book gave me all the giddy feels that come when reading a good romance book! I really enjoyed Big Shot by MJ Hendrix, which immediately hooked me from the synopsis. I am a big fan of romances with a mystery/thriller sub-plot, as it raises the stakes and keeps me on my toes the whole time. Big Shot did just this!
I really liked Kate, who despite struggling with a lot of personal baggage and bad luck, stayed strong and true to herself. No doormat heroines here! Luke’s overprotective grumpiness complemented Kate’s sweetness and quirkiness. One thing that kind of threw me for a loop though, was how he could be so overly suspicious of Kate being a spy sent to kill him yet he constantly let his guard down around her. Not very good survival instincts if you ask me.
Overall, the plot was fast-paced with some high stakes. Even though I love a good steamy scene, I appreciated how the sex scenes were not overly explicit and graphic, which sometimes can take away from the main storyline. I gave Big Shot 4 stars, because while I loved the build up to the main climax, I was left wanting a bigger twist and a more clear resolution between some of the side antagonists. Still, I highly recommend reading Big Shot by MJ Hendrix if you’re in the mood for a romantic thriller with a lot of heart!
**I received this as an ARC directly from the author in exchange for an honest review**
This was one of my favorite reads of this year! It really has just about everything- action packed, funny, suspenseful, and steamy!
I have to tell you that I’m actually a big baby when it comes to suspense…like I want to be able to watch or read it, but my poor heart can’t take it! Big Shot had just the right amount for me, nothing too violent and just the right amount of suspense to keep me guessing but also not cause me to have to pop a Xanax. And then the romance- Luke and Kate have instant chemistry that I could feel coming off the pages. Luke is a former navy seal turned billionaire who is so swoony, there actually isn’t anything wrong with him besides he is maybe a little paranoid, but even that is for good reason! Kate kept me laughing throughout the book and she was the perfect sunshine to Luke’s grumpiness.
Every rom com needs a great cast of secondary characters, and this one has that but even better because it includes a pet turtle! Since this is the first book of a new series, there aren’t answers to everything in this book, but Luke and Kate get their HEA. The next book is about a different couple and I’m already on the edge of my seat waiting for it!
When the author says this isn't your typical rom-com, they mean it. Instead, it's like a suspenseful workplace, almost rom-com.
Kate loses her job and finds her boyfriend cheating on her all in one day. So when her friend convinces her to go out that night, she does something totally unlike her- she goes home with a super hot guy. The next day she gets an interview and a job offer, and she then realizes it's him. He thinks she's a spy, and he is now very suspicious of her.
It leads to some hijinks, them getting closer, and well, it's a rom-com, so you know what happens. There were so many fantastic background characters- Speckles, Betty (sorry for how I felt about you most of the book), Mel, her dad, Tommy, etc. They really enhanced the rom-com side of the story. The suspense side? I'm super into it, and I cannot wait to read what happens next. I have my suspicions, and I want to see how close I am.
What do you do when your one night stand, becomes your new personal assistant who you think was sent to kill your? Luke let’s his guard down and enjoys and evening with Kate. When she shows up at his office he thinks she is a Russian spy, but at the same time he has to fight his attraction to her. Kate has the worst day. She is fired from her job, and when she gets home she finds her boyfriend in bed with her roommate. Now jobless, homeless, and boyfriendless Kate goes out for drinks with her best friend. With some liquid courage Kate approaches Luke and goes home with him. When she starts her new job she is completely surprised and then pissed at his attitude. Super cute, easy read, funny story. Watching Kate and Luke “dance” around each other, fight their feeling, bite their tongues. Not your typical office romance, or billionaire romance.
This was a great story! It had a little comedy to go along with the suspense and steam. Kate is a quirky artist with a pet turtle and a tendency to babble when she is nervous, it makes for some hilarious scenes that break up the tension in the book. Luke is an ex-navy seal who is being targeted by multiple bad guys and trying to keep up his billionaire appearance and watch his back. These two bump into each other in a bar and it is chemistry at first sight. They have a couple mishaps and a lot of mistrust on Luke's part. It will keep you on the edge of your seat while also making you crack up at Kate's antics. This was a wonderful suspense, rom-com with a HEA for the couple but not a completion on the mystery.
This book was a lot of fun! I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but I wound up really enjoying it. I loved the premise of the story and how we only get small snippets of Luke’s background, it kept me interested the entire book. I liked the twists and turns and jaw dropping moments. There was intense chemistry between Luke and Kate, great banter, and awesome spice! I enjoyed how Kate’s confidence grew through the book and loved how helpless Luke was to protect her, even when he thought she was an enemy. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I didn’t enjoy this as much as Falling for Temptation, but it was still a fun read. It’s not your typical romcom so it made things much more interesting. I just wasn’t completely sold on either of the main characters. I found myself cringing at some of the “romantic scenes” because they felt a bit forced.
This book had a lot of potential and I still enjoyed it but it was just missing something.
I usually don’t enjoy books when there’s a hook up early on, so maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy this as much. I prefer a slow burn in every aspect.
This book starts with a whirlwind one night stand after a terrible day and turns into a very elaborate story. I wasn't sure where the story would take me but I was in for the ride. Strong female character that won't be taking any crap even from her new boss, who she had a one night stand with before starting her new job. The main male character was very much in his own paranoid head a lot but seems to be a great guy overall. I was a bit confused by some of the timeline jumps but was able to get on track quickly. Overall this whirlwind emotional Rollercoaster was a really good read.
I received this ARC in exchange for a review, but these thoughts are all my own. I have been excited to read this book ever since I found MJ on social media. Kate is having the worst luck, and things keep going wrong for her. After a one night stand she soon finds out this same man is her new boss. The story took a turn I did not see coming and is action packed. The characters are likable and there is humor mixed in throughout. I cannot wait to see what happens next, and will definitely continue to read MJ’s books!
Kate and Luke. She’s beautiful and he’s gorgeous so why not have a fun wild night together. They will never see each other again…they don’t even know each other’s names….right? WRONG. Her first day at a new job guess who walks in.. as her BOSS?! He thinks she’s dangerous, she thinks he may be married… what have they done?? Throw in a couple of the best side kicks and what do you have? An amazing, funny, romantic thriller! Twist, turns, and steamy scenes. MJ Hendrix has done it again! Love, love love this!! You will too!! Get it now!!
I was instantly hooked! I wasn’t disappointed with this story line I can’t wait for other books in the series. I was worried it was leave on a cliff hanger but it ended in a way that I know the continuation is going to be as great as the start of it all!! Kate’s personality really did make this book great and I am obsessed with Speckles as well!! I loved that Luke wasn’t overly arrogant and too much of a clueless rich guy. I loved reading from Kate’s perspective and then Luke’s.

After losing her job and her boyfriend in one day, Kate has a one night stand that leads her into a classified world, in which her new boss thinks she was sent to kill him.
This was another good one by MJ Hendrix. I will say that she knows how to pull on your heart string. A firing, cheating ex, one night stand, office romance, near death experiences. #exnavyseal #officeromance #bookstagram #spy #mjhendrix
It's definetly not your typical rom-com. It started out as a good romantic and spicy story, no complications just a very entertaining one, then it had a twist. The writer has a unique way to explain all the situations from every perspective. It keept me on the edge of my seat for the most part thanks to the impredecible twist on the story.
I devoured the book in barely two days, i just couldn't stop.
Do yourself a favor and just sit back and read it.
I really enjoyed this romance novel. Kate is a sweet quirky heroine that I really related to and just wanted her to find happiness, Luke is a grumpy alpha that mistrusts everyone for good reason. There were so many twists and turns that were fun to read. I am looking forward to book 2 and more about the mystery that connects 4 men. Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC.
This was such a fun read. Kate and Luke complete each other perfectly, from their initial happenstance meeting all the way through. Not only that, but Luke's heroism (and other skills) is such a page-turner I could hardly put it down!
This was a great read!! If you need a break from the guaranteed HEA and the MCs not needing to work hard for the other then read this book! It has a great mix of action and romance! I can’t wait to ready the next book in the series!
THIS BOOK!!!!!! So so so good!!! It has the amazing “she’s hurt and he’s freaking out & trying to save her” trope!! He’s an ex NAVY SEAL billionaire who thinks she’s trying to kill him and it’s a romance you didn’t know you needed!!
This book has the perfect mix of suspense, romance, and humor! I really enjoyed Luke's inner commentary and his struggle between his suspicion and desire for Kate. I finished the book in one sitting! Didn't want to put it down. Must read 🥰
It wasn't swoony and it wasn't steamy, but I did finish it in less than 24 hours! I liked the author's style even if I didn't love every part of the story. Will I also need to read Fallon's story? Probably definitely yes.
I read this book in less than 4 days! Just couldn't put it down, it made me giggle, smile, long for love and made my heart race, such a fun and easy read. 100% would recomend!
