Great book for a overview of the brain. I read this for a Brain Bee (like a spelling bee except with brain facts), and it prepared me well. I didn't read this exact version. Wonderful book!
A very useful quick read for those interested in neuroscience.
Whilst I wouldn’t recommend it as your sole reading point, it is very helpful if you simply want some quick information. It is the basics – it is a starting point. From here, you can go on to the heavier stuff, delving deeper into neuroscience.
I LOVED READING THIS =D if only I have the money to go to med school, I would love studying some branch of neuroscience further. You gotta love how the authors phrased things so very delicately, like somehow calling neuro meds "drug mules" to be accessible to the brain, without really calling them drug mules. lmao, idk, i think there's something wrong with me. The chapters are written with interesting information discussed in a not-so-hard to understand way. Only reason for taking away 1 star is because I'm genuinely surprised at how they still hard-fact wired amyloid-beta with Alzheimer's, considering what happened—I suppose my edition could've missed an update or smth, but still. Yes, I think scientific research is something to be respectfully reverred of, but certainly not worshipped. Anyways, thats beside the point. Also, I can't express enough my adoration of books that include anatomical illustrations, and this one is so nice with that. Reading about addiction kind of changed my perspective on drug abuse—I was brought up with the idea that the inappropriate abuse of drugs by someone means they're to be damned, as in, one deserves whatever comes as a consequence—I never really considered that drug abuse might be the symptom of a neurological disease, and that addiction is, in fact, a neurological disease 0.o I would loveeeeeeeee to study some aspects further. I love genetics so it's nice to see how it correlates with neuroscience in this book.
Taking the brain bee elementary exam on sat, wish me luck 😭😭😭 no way i'll make it out of sectionals, but i hope it'll be fun at least xd We will not talk about how I signed up in January and literally just started preparing on the start of Feb
ALSO RAWR AS A HOMESCHOOLER, THIS IS LITERALLY MY FIRST TEST IN A LEGIT CLASSROOM, HELP, I'M SCARED
This is basically a boiled down version of a neuroscience textbook. It covered all of the important points, neuroanatomy (from a functional perspective, not a structural one), functions of the brain, disorders, and research methods. A particularly important chapter was the last one, on neuroethics, which are often overlooked.
I quite enjoy neuroscience, so I liked this book. I've learned basic neurobiology here and there, but this provided a complete overview which was enjoyable and concise. It had enough detail to be interesting, but it didn't try to fully flesh out every single topic, which would have tripled the size of the book.
I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in neuroscience and needs a place to begin.
I read the brief yet wholly informative Brain Facts earlier this year as I was preparing for an ultimately canceled Brain Bee. I have been re-reading certain of its chapters now during the conclusion of this tumultuous year as I prepare to impart the information contained within to high school students who were in my position last year: aching to demonstrate their knowledge of foundational neuroscientific topics. This book is replete with essential information for those aspiring to study and commit their academic careers to neuroscientific research; it's essentially a bible of sorts for the brain-obsessed sect of adolescents eager to attain a rudimentary comprehension of what constitutes the burgeoning field of neuroscience.
Read for Neuro Research. Learned a lot about the brain and the complexities between different systems in the brain and how much we don't understand. Will be helpful in research and conversations about neuroscience in general to be familiar with the terms
This is a really nice primer on the brain, and is also good as a reference book. The glossary is also nice. It doesn't go into the details of neuronal function, and cognitive function more broadly, but provides a nice overview. It's also very good on brain development, trauma, and diseases: I even learnt about some promising new therapies from it (specifically, ultrasound therapy as a substitute for radiation therapy for tumour patients)! There is also a great discussion of the implication of modern neuroscience for questions of moral and personal responsibility, but I personally think they could've pushed things a bit further in that respect.
As with many of the health and medical books I own, I have reads parts of them according to information I needed at that time. I am marking them as "Read" and they are all 5 stars!
