A trio of ordinary mothers have their lives turned upside down when they suddenly develop superpowers.
Jessica James is a hard-working single mum about to turn 41 who, while dealing with bake sales and ballet competitions for her twelve-year-old daughter, discovers a strange portal in her back yard.
The energy from the portal starts giving Jess and her friends some exciting side effects, such as super-pep to get things done, a convenient garbage disposal and improving their yoga skills out of sight. Portal baking becomes a regular activity for the friends (while drinking Margaritas), but soon their bodies start to morph with animal like super skills, sending tidal waves of chaos through their lives.
With a professional career, a blossoming teen, and a persistent ex-husband who wants her back, Jess is barely coping. Add an otherworldly beau who is not all he seems, an evil developer who has his sights set on the portal, a blackmailing boss and gigantic wings that have sprouted overnight – well – being late for work is a certainty.

Meg Grace has attempted to write an intriguing and succinct bio approximately a thousand times in the past, knowing she would need one for just this occasion. The struggle is real. She does however write a mean novel, hence her upcoming novel being awarded the 2020 Byron Writers Festival Mentorship and a long list appearance on the Queensland Writer's Centre Publishable Prize 2021, Finalist in Best Fantasy Novel Aurealis Awards 2021 and WINNER of the Adaptable Prize 2022. The first novel in the series WONDERWILD will be released later this year. Follow along for updates.
What a brilliant book! I enjoyed tremendously the witty and spot-on train of thoughts of the main heroine. Her sharp and humorous self reflections were a delight. The characters and storyline are funny, exciting and addictive. Great Supermums! I could barely put the book down, and when I had no time to read I was always looking forward to the next moment I could grab the book and keep on reading. I can't wait to read the sequel.
4.5* thoroughly enjoyed this read, a lovely combination of things I could relate to and things just a little different from my life ;) If possible, read while you're on holidays, so there's less need to put it down ...
Secondly from the moment I walked into to Fernvale I knew I was going to enjoy spending time there. It has real Middleton vibes to it.
After getting to know Jess and her family and friends I am pretty sure I know exactly where i would fit in.
I am pretty sure Wanda and I would be drinking buddies. Bree and myself would be the arts and crafts type moms and Jess would just be glad that the mess wasn't at her house.
add in a magic portal that give everyone their own special gifts with a side of sexy man candy and you have something that is amazingly fun and easy to read.
This read is So Much Fun! I promise, you won’t be able to put it down, and when you do, you’ll want to head straight out into your yard in search of a portal to throw junk through to see if a startlingly handsome sex god appears to sternly scold you and then make ravishing love to you.
This is a story of motherhood, friendship and the desire to escape the humdrum repetitiveness of packed lunches and deciding what’s for dinner.
Like many of us, Jess, a newly singly mum of one, was simply seeking a bit of adventure in the everyday, but seemingly innocently, ended up on an epic ride across the multiverse. Bringing her two besties along for the ride, defeating nefarious foe and discovering a whole lot about herself and what she is capable of, Jess manages to be a damn hot mess and the the hero of her own story all at the same time. Cheating husbands be damned!
Now, don’t get me wrong, I do love and adore my children, and the role of ‘mum’ is the most rewarding of my life so far, but… 😁
Who wouldn’t be thrilled to discover an otherworldly portal in the backyard. And to have a heart-meltingly handsome love interest stroll through said portal to sweep you off your feet and lead you on the adventure of lifetime?
It sure as heck beats folding laundry and loading the dishwasher!
I can’t wait for the next instalment, really can’t decide on team Jake or team Roann, and am dying to see what’s on the other side of THAT PORTAL!!!
Meg put together some great characters. Add in the rip to another world in which our main character Jess finds in her backyard and gives her some powers and her life feels a bit more satisfying.
I really loved Jess's internal thoughts. She had me laughing so many times. Her friends are amazing and so is this other world that they don't get to actually see but reap benefits from. I love that they get these powers to help take down the nafarious characters that come from the other side to try and destroy this small town where they live.
A book about motherhood and all the craziness that goes with that… and a secret portal…basically super powers…and morphing into animals… where could you go wrong!
