A Collar For His Brat #4-6

A Collar For His Brat, Volume Two: Episodes 4-6

Rate this book
A stubborn brat. A smiling sadist. Perfection...or disaster?

In Volume Two of A Collar For His Brat, Nate and Ewan have to find the equilibrium in their tempestuous relationship, or risk hurting each other irrevocably.

DEBUG
Ewan McKinney knows what he doesn't want: rules, responsibilities, or having to talk about his feelings. What he does want is harder to pin down, too much damage in his past to see it clearly. But if he doesn't, he risks being scarred again, and losing his new-found Sir into the bargain.

Nate Scott has caused a lot of pain in his time, but he always knew it was wanted. With Ewan, he's not sure. Nate can't read Ewan's mind; his brat is like a black box, impossible to tease open. But their shared kinks take them into dangerous territory, and Nate must convince Ewan to confide in him before one of them does something irreversible.

To make this work, Ewan will have to put his trust in the one man who has never let him down. And if he can't? It could mean the end of everything.

INTERRUPT
Ewan wants. Nate gives. That's the nature of their play.

But what happens when Ewan asks for something Nate doesn't trust himself to give? Nate needs to trust that Ewan will say no when he needs it, and Ewan needs to believe that Nate will listen. This game is dangerous. One false step could leave both of them emotionally scarred. But Ewan wants, Nate can't help himself, and now they're in it together.

EXCEPTION
The thing with Channon isn't even a crush, so why does Ewan keep thinking about it? And what does it say about his relationship with Nate that his Dom will let him crush on someone else without turning into a possessive monster? Ewan has never been in love like this before, and he's never had so much to lose.

He belongs to Nate. Anything Nate encourages him do with Channon must mean something else. Right?

For Nate this might just be fun, but for Ewan it could mean ruining the best thing he's ever had.

I loved this even more than vol. 1. I worried that Nate and Ewan were going to turn into a clichéd Daddy/brat, with the dom smoothing out all the brat's prickliness and spark and turning him into a perfectly obedient 24/7 sub, à la every book that has ever made me run screaming from that dynamic. This is not that, oh, it is so not that. Ewan learns that Nate is trustworthy. Nate comes to terms with the changes in his relationship with Jack. Ewan never becomes a lapdog, and Nate never wants him to. (Er, no shame on anyone who lives that dynamic or loves to read it. Apart from the predictability of some books, it's squicky for me, but KINKTOMATO.)

Some things I especially appreciated in both this series and His Boy Next Door: the friendship between Ewan and Channon (especially Ewan's protectiveness of Channon, which honestly brought tears to my eyes more than once); the fact that Ewan and Jack don't really like each other, though they come around to some mutual respect, I suppose; the subs' boundaries (Ewan keeping them, Channon learning to develop them).

These are such good books. Models of how sex, writing about sex, can be as revealing of character & relationships as writing about, IDK, travel or conversation or work vocation. And I don't mean to devalue straight-up porn; it's just that as a writer and as someone who thinks about sex a lot, I get really frustrated at the unthinking assumption that sex is less interesting or complicated than any other matter for fiction. R.J. Moray is one of the writers I brandish as evidence for my argument.

Combo review for volumes 1 and 2.
I really really love Nate and Ewan. They are messy and there’s a ton of push/pull but it is so wonderful to see them learn each other. Ewan especially is a character I just want to protect, even as the prickly arsehole that he can be. Nate going from somewhat resigned in his Dom and love life to all in with the menace sub (that kind of fell into his lap) is a compelling story. Much like HBND Moray does a fantastic job going beneath the surface with these characters, writing scenes with a ton of nuance and steam, and getting me horribly invested in their world. Can’t wait for more.

r.j. moray is kind of a god idk

i held off on reading this one when i first read all of the books because i knew it would take A WHILE for us to get more episodes considering that moray is focused on wrapping up the final season of his boy next door, but decided to read this bc i was in the mood for something silly and quick to read, and also i missed them.
i continue to be impressed by how well-written these series are and how they use smut as a vehicle to explore and develop these characters and relationships. i think i like nate and ewan a bit more than jack and channon because their push-and-pull dynamic is very fun to read about. but!! i do like the smut in this series a bit less than hbnd.
anyways! love these characters! would die for them! would die for golden retriever puppy channon!

Oh this was just so lovely. Ewan is so grumpy, and Nate loves it so much and they just fit together perfectly. I was worried that this series would not be as interesting since it follows roughly the same timeline as HBND, but I found the alternate storyline and perspective refreshing. I loved seeing Jack and Channon’s relationship from a different point of view, and Ewan’s worry over Channon was adorable. This volume was sweeter than the first one in this story line, and we got to spend more time watching Nate and Ewan learn about each other and develop their relationship and generally be adorable together. Overall would recommend!

(Combined review for Volumes One and Two.)

A spin-off from His Boy Next Door, featuring Jack’s best friend Nate and bratty, prickly Ewan who slowly becomes his sub. Nate and Ewan are different from Jack and Channon in basically every way, not only because Ewan is a brat and Channon is perfectly obedient, but also because Nate and Ewan are both conflicted and reluctant about their relationship in a way that Jack and Channon never were. Moray manages to avoid the “he could never want me that way!” trope while evoking many of the same feelings, so that the conflict between the two feels real and not cliche. Also, a lot of the time the “brat” dynamic doesn’t interest me very much because it seems superficial, but here Moray shows how Ewan’s willfulness is integral to his character and why his desire to submit and his desire to resist are two sides of the same coin. Highly recommended both to those who liked His Boy Next Door and also to those who would prefer to read a D/s dynamic that isn’t 24/7.

M/M feat a scene with more, HFN, dual POV, impact play, sadism, masochism

The story continues with more Nate and Ewan. I am loving this story and how we see someone love an honest to God brat.

📝 Review & thoughts:
This is a review for all of the 6 episodes (which are about 600 pages in total).

I’m so glad I decided to read this. I absolutely adored His Boy Next Door, and loved Ewan & Nate there, so I finally decided to give this spin off a go, even though their brand of sadism and masochism is a bit too strong for my taste.

I’m really glad I did because I they are a wonderful couple and the way Moray writes BDSM stories is just incredible. I’ve never found this level of communication in other books, and the books in the Santa Rita world are all so good.

I love how good Moray is at writing spin offs. Like you see the other main characters from the new couple’s perspective and Moray is so good at writing different perspectives. If you read A Collar for His Brat before His Boy Next Door, you might actually not like Jack at all, but if you read His Boy Next Door, I think you’ll fall in love with him too.

Anyway, totally recommend this read. I truly hope we get more episodes in the future cause I’m definitely not done with this world and these characters!

You can check what k!nks they do below.

This is a review for both seasons. I absolutely adored this series and I definitely would love to recommend it to anyone who likes BDSM writing that focuses on relationships struggles, characters studies and use sex to develop/reveal something about the characters. I think for me it is pretty rare to find a good romance, with good bdsm, where the plot focuses so well on the balance of the two, and both characters are (seemingly) loved equally by the author.

To be honest it is quite hard to write a complex exciting plot, as most of the story if characters focused. The novellas simply follow the romance between Nate, a sadist dominant who craves affection and always preferred a challenge over perfectly submissive lovers, and Ewan, a brat and sub who doesn't seem to find a dom fully able to trust or give him what he wants.
When Ewan starts a new job in a tech company, he immediately recognize Nate as a dominant from the club they both visit, and viceversa. Their relationship starts as an offer from Nate to help Ewan from spiralling, and then continues with rocky beginnings (season 1) and into an established relationship (season 2).

Nate is a honestly good and sweet person, he has some moments of doubts where he is so humanized it hurts, and the book goes into detail on his need to both love and hurt Ewan like Ewan wants, and at the same time how he feels protective about him and scared of how much Ewan could hurt him. On the other side, Ewan is, in my opinion, such a hard character to write because he is angry at the world, scared of commitment, and I felt like the book really wanted to explore his kinks vs his need for freedom/independence vs his past. So much unsaid (in the narrative, which allowed us as the readers to wonder what is going on) and so much communication (between the characters) without the book falling into the mistake of being "therapy talk".

The author writes so well I am definitely reading everything they might write in the future.

M/M BDSM. Nate and Ewan have an odd relationship that works for them about 80% of the time. Nate is frustrated because Ewan seems to want him to read his mind. As the Dom, Nate tries not to force communication because he doesn't want to scare him away, but he really needs to.
Enter Channon, a new friend for Ewan with great attraction. Nate has big history with Jack, Channon's Dom, and a history of sex with the couple too.
I wasn't sure I would like the direction this volume took, but I did. Nate's open discussions about Channon and not being jealous actually helped Ewan open up and trust Nate.

I think I said it all on the episodes 1-3 review, but I really like this series. After #3 I thought "does this really *need* a continuation? where's it gonna go?" but turns out there was still plenty left to explore and I enjoyed every bit. This episode in particular was wonderfully nuanced and complex and emotional and tense and sweet. High points for dialogue and prose all around

(I do kinda want more office perspectives on their relationship, like do the coworkers Know they're a thing? Do they Suspect? I know HR comes up a lot in this universe but what info do they actually have. And just more workplace interactions in general)

I enjoyed this second collection of Ewan and Nate's story. Getting the outside perspective to Channon and Jack's story was a lot of fun, seeing some of the same events from the other side. I'm so glad that Ewan is starting to feel a little more secure with Nate, and that they finally admitted their feelings to each other. I really want the series to get more books though because their story is definitely not finished.

This one mostly felt like a re-telling of the other books, just from Nate and Ewan’s perspective. It was a fun re-telling, but it didn’t get nearly as complex as I’d hoped. Mostly just kinky scenes without much depth or character analysis. There was a little, but it felt skated over, like hints of it. I know that this is supposed to be smut, so I can’t really fault it, but I was hoping for a bit more.

Since I got the first half of this excellent collection for free from the author as part of a giveaway, I had no compunction about buying this half to complete my set.

I think I will always need more of Nate and Ewan in my life, so it's nice to have all of these on hand.

Reread. A great follow-up, equally as strong as the prior set of books. I like how the series doesn’t just retread the same topics as it goes on - this author has really perfected pace.

ewan’s character development is beautiful.

a brat using his safeword to get out of blowing his sub-with-benefit’s annoyingly perfect dom is actually something that can be so personal

Enjoyable spice, with a interesting pair of MCs. All the stories were a little short and felt like we only just go into the meat of the relationship at the very end
