Bridget Berg grew up on the slopes of Elk Mountain, Utah. The daughter of a famous downhill skier, she was chasing her own Olympic dreams when her father’s unexpected death forced her to take over his ski lodge. It’s her home and she’ll protect it at all costs―especially from her insufferable neighbors.
Kennedy Fleming is only in Utah to put her dad’s vacation home on the market. She has no interest in living there. That is, until she meets her sexy redheaded neighbor. Sure, she’s rude and unwelcoming, but Kennedy isn’t one to shy away from a challenge.
When Kennedy makes a discovery that could cause Bridget to lose everything, she’s forced to choose between her family and her heart. There’s a mountain of history between their families, but as tempers rage and sparks fly, they’re about to discover that a love worth fighting for is right in front of them.
An enemies to lovers romance and I was hooked! I think Elle Spencer did the enemies part really well. Too well, in fact, that I felt really bad for one of the characters, Kennedy. Kennedy's father owns a vacation home up in the snowy mountains and has a longstanding dispute with the neighbour who runs a ski lodge. The dispute is actually between two fathers who are no longer around/not physically capable of continuing the dispute, but their children decide to continue the tradition, or at least one of the daughters have. So Bridget, who has taken over the ski lodge decides to go all mean-girl on Kennedy.
That being said, Bridget isn't hateful. She's actually very nice and I like her. But I love Kennedy even more. Kennedy takes all the bullying aimed at her in stride. She's really resilient and humorous and a very charming woman and I fell hard for her. I love that Spencer does the lovers part equally well too. The banter between Bridget and Kennedy was really good and there's so much sparks.
This is a story I would totally recommend for fans of the enemies to lovers trope. A well written book indeed.

Bridgette Berg is thrust into running the family ski resort after the sudden passing of her famous father. Kennedy Fleming is coerced by her brother to visit their father’s cabin which sits next door to the ski resort. Kennedy (awesome name) is supposed to meet a realtor to sell the cabin as her father’s health is in a quick decline. Little did Kennedy know there was a long standing feud between Bridgette’s and her father.
Spencer has a way of writing lighthearted romances that are enjoyable and funny in a slapstick style. Personally, I am not a fan of slapstick however I can appreciate the skill involved in making this style work with the printed word. Spencer excels at this and highly entertains her readers. Her characters are superficially alluring with big hearts, personalities and gestures. They are tailor made for this genre of humour.
A Long Way to Fall is fun, funny and entertaining. Make sure to treat yourself with a copy.

Featured presentation: A long way to fall by Elle Spencer
Taking the high road means you have a longer way to fall…
Cast: Bridget Berg gave up her dreams of becoming an Olympic champion to run her father’s ski lodge after his death. Now she’s constantly living in his shadow - struggling to find her place in life and at the lodge. Kennedy Fleming is a woman on a mission: she has to meet with the realtor to sell her father’s cabin and get back to civilisation.
The Plot: Bridget Berg is adamant to continue her Olympic hero-father’s legacy and if that includes inheriting his feud with the neighbour together with the ski lodge, so be it. Kennedy Fleming is in way over her head. Since the helicopter dropped her on the snow-covered mountain, nothing has gone right for her. And the staff members at the neighbouring ski resort are not willing to assist her, least of all the alluring owner. But not even Bridget can allow a hand-me-down foe to suffer cold and hunger. However, there are more at stake than falling for the enemy.
The blazing: I absolutely adored the dialogue, both internal and between the characters! The characters gave descriptive nicknames to others in lieu of their real names prior to being introduced. This set the stage for exquisite banter led by Kennedy’s undeterred hopefulness. Ms Spencer’s whole cast joins in from the MCs right down to random guests at the lodge.
The bright: It was Kennedy’s unwavering positivity that made Bridget finally see her as more than just Jerry Fleming’s daughter. Kennedy also won over some of the resort employees in her hilarious attempts to get food and warmth at the lodge. Even after things went downhill for her (literally and figuratively), she found a way to rise to the occasion.
There was an instant attraction between Kennedy and Bridget, but Ms Spencer handled it quite well. Kennedy knew she was only there for a couple of days and Bridget was initially hesitant due to the feud. They spent time engaging in witty repartee, but in the end it was Bridget’s good-hearted nature that allowed her to put their fathers’ dispute behind them and enabled them to grow closer.
The bleak: The book focused on how they met and initially fell for each other, which is just fine. However, towards the end there is a lot happening off-page and this made the ending feel rather abrupt. Others might disagree with me on this, but I would’ve liked to see a bit of the developments implied.
The burned-to-ashes: Nothing.
And then The Plot Thickens into a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously yet refuses to be shallow and provides the reader with depth and drama as well.
Humour often falls flat on the page, but Ms. Spencer kept it light and fluffy, not to mention clever. The light-heartedness was interspersed with darker themes like doubt, heart-ache and the pettiness that stems from making a pretty penny. I had so much fun reading this. It was the perfect antidote to the stresses of everyday life.

I always look forward to Elle Spencer’s new releases and “A Long Way to Fall” was no different. It’s an enemies-to-lovers romance and for some reason I don’t read a lot of that trope.
Bridget Berg has recently inherited not only the ski resort her father owned, but also the multi-year feud he had with their closest neighbor, Jerry Fleming. When Jerry’s daughter Kennedy, comes to town, Bridget is immediately put on guard.
“A Long Way to Fall” was a hallmark type rom-com with a lot of flirty banter and laugh out loud over the top situations. It’s well written and suited for someone wanting a light and fluffy romance. Unfortunately, it didn’t work too well for me overall, even with those positive things.
I realize that I’m an outlier here but there were several things that I couldn’t get past to make me really enjoy this. Almost 90% of this book takes place over 5 days. They meet on Friday and love is mentioned on the following Tuesday and I just could not buy it. Especially as several of those days Bridget is being very antagonistic towards Kennedy. They have a lot of chemistry together but they barely spend any time together for the majority of the book. Kennedy is flirty and very forgiving of Bridget’s behavior but don’t actually get to know one another. It’s just cute banter and quips at one another.
Then there’s also a time jump and we missed them really getting to one another followed by a rushed ending where everything magically works out for everyone. There wasn’t enough character development or emotional connection for me to love this.
I received an ARC from Bold Strokes Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The banters and bickering between the 2 MCs had me chuckling.....and some scenes were really hilarious. I would categorize this as enemies to lovers though the animosity is more so on Bridget and not so much with Kennedy. Kennedy seems to be taking all that was being thrown at her in stride and I must admit, I’m not too thrilled with some of Bridget’s initial actions...a tad too harsh in my mind.
Cute, funny, and I loved both MCs - especially Kennedy. I have a few gripes, one of which is a bit of a spoiler to do with the steamy bit, so don't continue reading if you don't want to know! As some of you may know, I feel that love at first sight really cheapens a story, and that was definitely the case here🤦 buuut it was still a fun listen. My main annoyance, was actually that the MCs didn't get busy until the last 15 minutes of the book 😑 I'll be honest, I'm never a huge fan of that 'single sex scene at 80% (or later)' formula, it's just so dry.
As for the narration, I'd never heard this one before and, initially, I almost stopped the book because she just wasn't doing it for me. If you give the audio a try, I'd recommend listening for a time, the narration might grow on you - it definitely did for me, though she's not among my favourites by a long shot, but I'd give her a 3.5/5.
Overall, I'd listen to it again because I do like Elle Spencer's writing (Casting Lacey was one of my first sapphic audiobooks and one of my favs), but it would need a bit more spice and a lot less of the MCs confusing their hearts with their nether regions to crack the 5⭐ tier 🤷
Bridget Berg loves her family’s ski lodge in Utah. Her father was a decorated skier and his death devastated Bridget but she’s determined to keep his beloved ski lodge open even if she has to work nonstop. Her father was her best friend and she can’t imagine letting him down.
Kennedy Fleming hasn’t been to her father’s vacation home in years but goes as a favor to her brother to put it on the market. The moment she sees Bridget she’s attracted to the beautiful redhead. Little does she know that anyone with the Fleming last name is not looked upon kindly thanks to Kennedy’s father’s long-standing dispute with Bridget’s father. Bridget isn’t interested in getting to know anything about Kennedy, even if she is annoyingly attractive.
Elle Spencer has such a gift for writing comedy. This book was really charming. I loved the witty banter between Bridget and Kennedy. At first Bridget’s cruelty turned me off but it didn’t take long for her to be won over by Kennedy’s charm. These women have such good hearts and are so deserving of happiness. If you’re looking for a lighthearted, entertaining read, this is the book for you.

I looooove enemies to lovers romances and this one did not disappoint!! This is my 3rd book by Elle Spencer (my all-time favorite being Casting Lacey 😉) and I really like the way she writes and makes me feel all these feels 😍 Oh and this is my first ever ARC and I’m just so excited about that hehe Okay, back to the review, what first drew me to this book was the description, because like I said before, I’m a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope and so I had to read this one ASAP, and wow!!!! The chemistry between Bridget and Kennedy is off the charts! I love it when I can feel the tension between the characters and oh boy, there was a lot of tension here hehe All the banter between them was very sexy and entertaining 👌🏻 Overall, this is a great book with a great story and some awesome characters. The only reason I’m not giving this 5* is because of the ending, it just felt a bit too rushed and I would have loved to read more. But other than that, it was perfect! I 100% recommend this one 💛
I received and Advanced Review Copy (ARC) from Bold Strokes Books through Netgalley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review.
Since her popular debut Casting Lacey, I’ve been following Elle Spencer’s career closely. Her book 30 Dates in 30 Days was one of my favourites of 2019. Ms. Spencer’s books are automatic reads and with A long way to fall, once again, she has delivered an entertaining story.
Bridget Berg is the daughter of a famous downhill skier and now that her father passed away, she’s in charge of his sky resort located in Elk Mountain, Utah. Kennedy Fleming’s father is the owner of the cabin next door and both families have a history of antagonism and conflict that has been passed to the next generation. When Bridget and Kennedy first meet sparks fly and not of the good kind, but as they get to know each other and attraction gets in the way, they decide that maybe it’s time to leave the families’ differences behind. But when past conflicts come back to threaten their budding relationship, Kennedy will have to choose between her family loyalties and her newfound love…
This is an enemies to lovers romance with a heavy dose of humour. As a matter of fact, the book blurb doesn’t reflect how funny this story is. Elle Spencer normally mixes her stories with humour and my favourites are when there’s more comedy than drama, just like in this one.
The book is written in third person from the point of view of both main characters. Kennedy’s pov is hilarious, she has an epic sense of humour which is reflected in, for example, the way she describes Bridget as a “Viking Goddess of the North with the cute freckles”, a “Nordic Queen”, or the “She-Wolf Queen of the Mountain”. Her self deprecating attitude and a penchant to get involved in ridiculous situations made her my favourite character:
“… she could ski down the mountain if she needed to. It had been a few years since she’d clicked into a pair of skis, but it was just like riding a bike, right? The kind of bike that had no brakes and she could easily wrap herself around a tree on.”
Regarding the romance, I loved the chemistry built from the antagonism and how, despite Bridget’s determination not to fall for Kennedy’s charms, she does exactly that. However, I thought that there was a bit of insta-love when it was time to move the relationship forward, even for lesbians’ timeframes but I guess that it was needed in the context of the story.
Lula Larkin narrated the audiobook version and did an absolutely amazing job. I haven’t listened to many of her narrations despite that she reads quite a few Bold Strokes Books novels. I’ll definitely listen to more of her audiobooks in the future. Her voices are distinctive, her performance of emotions is spot on and her comedic timing is great. Ms. Larkin made this story even more enjoyable. 4 stars.
Elle Spencer’s books read like the rom-coms we never get in our community and I love it. They are always light and funny and there is this casualness that makes it seem like Spencer just blinks and types this all out. It’s fun reading these books and I hope it’s fun for the author to write them.
Bridget owns ski in - ski out resort on a mountain in Utah. When her neighbour comes to visit she is all set to see her dad’s nemesis Jerry Fleming, but it turns out it’s his stunning and witty daughter who knows nothing of the feud that’s been going on for years. Kennedy is witty and fun, but most of all has no idea what’s she’s getting herself into. There is so much banter and snark, you just have to love it. I do know this isn’t for everyone but I happen to love it and Spencer knows how to write it well.
Yes this book has some very happy coincidences and sometimes it’s just a bit too good to be true, but that’s what makes it fun and light hearted in my opinion. What I would say is a bit of an issues is the release of this book. Comes out in May while it’s set on a ski resort in December… just a little strange in my opinion but that doesn’t matter too much. Luckily Christmas is only mentioned and not made a big deal of.
I enjoyed myself and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun, flirty romance on a snowy mountain.

A Long Way to Fall by Elle Spencer was just the book I needed to read during these very trying times in the real world. Sometimes we just need to immerse ourselves in a good story and let reality go for a while. This is a great novel to do that with.
Ms. Spencer has a wicked sense of humor. I knew this already from reading some of her former novels. She used this skill to turn what would have been a very serious enemies-to-lovers romance into a tale that often had me chuckling out loud as I read. At times it even became slapstick humor. I’m glad she made her main characters, Bridget Berg and Katherine Fleming intelligent, likeable, able to take a joke and laugh at themselves, especially Katherine.
The setting, a gorgeous ski resort at the top of a pristine mountain is beautifully described. Even the rundown shack that Katherine stays in has a certain charm…if you like no heat, food, or any other amenities that make life bearable.
The love story between the two is quite satisfying to read about, though it takes a while for the two to recognize and admit to their chemistry. The humor helps to blunt some of the bad feelings that were present (mostly on Bridget’s side) in the tale.
I had a lot of fun reading this novel. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a humorous enemies-to-lovers romance.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.
Kennedy Fleming arrives at her father’s cabin to find it in worse shape than she expected, and with a storm coming in that will leave her snowbound it’s not an ideal situation. Luckily for her there’s a ski lodge next door but when she ventures over to find food and warmth she finds herself less than welcome. The lodge is owned by Bridget Berg whose family has had less than ideal relationship with their mountain neighbor. Finding out why their families have been fighting all these years is the key to everything but could potentially be the end of the Berg Ski Lodge. The characters in this were extremely entertaining. Kennedy is hilarious and had me laughing out loud a couple of times with her witty dialogue and general behavior. They have a great build up to the end of the book as Kennedy slowly inserts herself into life on the mountain, partly because of her personality and partly out of necessity. I didn’t love some of Bridget’s actions towards Kennedy though, she seemed to hold Kennedy responsible for the actions of the entire Fleming family while Kennedy is facing some tough road blocks being stuck in a cabin without food or heat. The end was sort of anti climactic after such a great build up, leaving me wishing for a bit more from Bridget. Overall it was an entertaining read if the end wasn’t quite as grand as I expected.
I'm totally diggin' Kennedy, she's so sweet and innocent in everything... I hurt for Bridget, just 'cause of the predicament her father got her into with the Fleming's. I wish this was longer and Spencer gave us insight into Kennedy and Bridget's future together. I would have loved to see more of them as partners, with their own cute kids writing 'Kendy loves Brijet'.
I had to move an Elle Spencer book to the top of my read pile after she set her book in my home state. Bridget Berg is running her Olympian father’s ski lodge following his death. It is a ski in and out resort at the top of a mountain in Utah (yay). It takes all her time and she is still mourning her beloved dad. Next to the resort is an obnoxious cabin that blocks some of the view and the owner has continuous battles with the Bridget’s dad about property lines and anything else he can think of to cause problems. Unexpectedly the owners daughter shows up at the cabin who is gorgeous, flirty and funny. Kennedy Flemming has no idea why the she isn’t welcome at the lodge. But with no way off the mountain and a non working heater she is going to find away to get inside for food and warmth.
This is a fun story and with grown-up smart women who are mixed up in something that they really can’t control. Yes it is instant attraction and the love word gets tossed in very, very early. I wished for a little more real getting to know you conversations between Bridget and Kennedy because I really liked both of them and wanted to spend more time with them together. But the situation is a good set up. I’m not sure all my questions got resolved but I enjoyed reading this story and it left me smiling and wanting to head up the mountains to ski. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review. (4.5 stars)
This is a cute story about two women who start out as enemies and end up as lovers. Bridget is an Olympic skier who is just starting to learn how to manage a ski lodge that she inherited from her father who was a skiing legend and recently passed away. The adjoining property is owned by Kennedy Fleming’s family and they have been feuding over it for years.
This was a fun rom-com book with lots of great dialogue between the two MCs. Several lines hit home for me and made the book a four star read.
A Long Way to Fall is a fun, light-hearted novel. It's quite funny too and found myself giggling throughout - particularly following Kennedy's shenanigans. She's a great character - she's so sweet and cheeky, but thankfully with substance too. I thought her and Bridget worked well together.
I thought the chemistry was there, but the romance itself moved very quickly. There were some big feelings discussed without a lot of relationship development shown. Regardless, I still really enjoyed this novel.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
3,5 stars Definitely not bad, but I can't say I'm a big fan of the Berg's behaviour in this particular story. Because Jerry was an arse, yes, but he had a reason that no one ever acknowledged. And the contract was ironclad. So technically speaking, it was full within his (or his son's) right to do whatever he wanted with that piece of land. If they just included it in the initial sale contract it could all be avoided. And pretending like a contract doesn't exist is idiotic/not telling relevant people. Otherwise it was a slightly above average enemies-to-lovers romance without many surprises.
i'm a little bummed by this one. until the last third i was thinking it would be a decently mid/higher three star read for me (which for me is a good rating just means, 'i liked this!, but it likely won't stick with me for super long') but i think i just find the idea that people fall In Love in a matter of days to be too absurd and annoying. i liked bridget and kennedy's dynamic that was building but my god LADIES YOU ARE NOT IN LOVE you've known each other three days and you want to fuck and you like each other.
come on now.
in the end i enjoyed myself, but i think by the end of it i ended up being more of a 2.5 read for me. it's not one that's gonna stick, and i've enjoyed more much better from this author.
(i'm also not a huge fan of lula larkin as a narrator, and kinda bummed that she's suddenly everywhere with a lot of sapphic authors i usually like. she's not terrible, but she doesn't have a lot of varriation in character voices and i don't find her performance as authentic/getting to me in the same way i do with other narrators that i love).
I haven't laughed this much in a lesfic in a long time. Man this was funny, and flirty, and super sexy all at once., and just the book I needed. Confident, assured women totally rock my boat and Kennedy had these qualities oozing from every pore. Her and Bridget's chemistry was excellent, their banter hilarious, and the situations Kennedy finds herself in very well executed. There were a few holes, sure, some parts left hanging, but meh! I rolled with it. And this cold-weather gal truly loved reading a book about winter just as summer is settling in. I just wish this were a little longer and had at least on more smokin' hot sexy time scene. But no points deducted!
I love everything Elle Spencer writes. This was no exception. The bickering between the two main characters over bad blood between their fathers was great entertainment.
This was an unexpectedly fun read. The narrative is whacky and at times off-the-wall. There are some serious moments, but the story never takes itself too seriously so you shouldn’t either when reading.
The story flows well and I was immersed in the events from the start to the finish. It’s the kind of book that’s a safe, feel good read that moves quickly and has a cast of funny characters and ridiculous situations.
The sexual tension is fun and cute at times, but the love scene fell a bit flat with me as I found it formulaic (you know the drill: finger, finger, lick, lick, the big O, switch POV and repeat). Probably because the rest of the narrative has such a unique and funny voice that doesn’t work in a sexy scene so it ended up being a little on the meh side for me.
An enjoyable read that has some genuinely funny moments, running gags, quirky characters, and a cute, sometimes hilariously awkward love story. If you’re in the mood for a whacky lesbian modern-day retelling of Romeo and Juliet, this is for you.
ARC received via the publisher and NetGalley in return for an honest review.
This is a very nice and intriguing story with charming main and supporting characters. Some scenes and Kennedy’s inner monologue had me laughing out loud many times throughout the story. This is one of Elle Spencer’s books that had me laughing on the first chapter, even her About the Author page at the end of the book made me smile. I hope we get to see more of these characters in the future, especially Lola, she needs her own story told!
If you’re looking for a sweet lesfic romantic comedy, this is it!
going into this i thought i was gonna love it and hate it at the same time?
something like that did happen tbh
i rated it 6/10 in the begining but realized later that its definitely not on the same level as other 3 star books i recently read so i upped it to 4 stars.
i think that this one has a lot potential but it just didnt deliver.
i disliked every character kinda? theres a whole scale i guess of how much i disliked each character literally. from the one i disliked most - bridget (one mc) - to the one i disliked the least - kennedy (no, i didnt like her i just disliked her the least, yep). still i felt bad giving it 3 stars. maybe ill change it in the future.
bridget was too childish and annoying and then kennedy was trying too much from the beginning and i couldnt even realize why. it just didnt make sense to me at all.
it had its funny and nice parts but it was a small percentage of the book.
cant come close to elle spencers casting lacey which i cant wait to buy a paperback of and reread it.
Enemies to lovers in the most charming way possible. I love the characters, the setting, the chemistry and the creative story line. Kennedy was so funny and enjoyable. She made the entire book. Bridget has some jerk tendencies, but ultimately she redeemed herself (somewhat). The love story line was a little jagged and I wish the characters spent more time in each other’s company before dropping the L bomb, but meh, that was easily overlooked. Solid and feel good!
This has been a fun story, with a series of ridiculous situations that become hilarious, although the why of some of the things and even the explanation itself are left quite undefined or with a somewhat vague resolution. But it has been really entertaining.
Bridget Berg has just had to take over the ski resort that her father built, now that he has just passed away. Boden Berg was an Olympic ski champion, charismatic and loved by everyone except his resort neighbor, Jerry Fleming, owner of the cabin right next to the access that skiers are forced to pass through to access the slopes. For years, Jerry has been playing dirty tricks on Boden, threatening customers, in short, bothering him in any way possible. So now that her father is gone, when Bridget sees Jerry's helicopter land, she begins to prepare for a counteroffensive.
But who gets out of the helicopter is not Jerry but his daughter Kennedy, a woman who lives in Miami, works as a real estate agent and is in the cabin to solve some matter that her brother has entrusted to her, although she does not know very well what.
And since Kennedy arrives, without her understanding why, she is treated as a persona non grata, adding to this that the airline has lost her luggage and she has nothing but what she is wearing and her bag and on top of that the cabin is without heating no food and she has no means to travel to the neighboring town and no one seems to want to help her in any way.
From the first interactions between Kennedy and Bridget sparks fly, the dialogues are full of double meanings, Kennedy's imagination is great and she does not have much problem speaking her mind.
Some characters help to create more misunderstandings and contribute their comic point as well, Sheriff Lola among others.
And despite the fact that in the end everything is a bit unresolved or vaguely explained and the final solution somewhat rushed, it has been a fun, entertaining and amusing read.
Publisher Bold Strokes Books was kind enough to provide me with an advanced reading copy via Netgalley for my honest review
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Bridget gave her dream of becoming a Olympic when her father sudden death causes her to have to run his Ski Lodge. She do everything in her power to keep it a success even if means continues the feud with neighboring Jerry.
Kennedy is way overhead when she has to tend to her father Jerry cabin while his health is declining. She doesn’t know about the ongoing feud with Ski resort next door. While she tries to get everything in order her and Bridget clash but Bridget starts to see there’s more to Kennedy then being Jerry daughter.
I enjoy this read I love the outdoors setting and how Bridget and Kennedy love their fathers but realizes they don’t have to take on their feud.
A long way to fall is an enjoyable - albeit cheesy - lesbian rom-com set in the cozy ski resort of Elk Mountain.
Bridget inherits the resort after the passing of her father, and the feud with the neighbors along with it. determined not to let the flemmings walk all over her, bridget is less than welcoming when kennedy turns up at the resort with no luggage, food or heating.
what unfolds after their initial meeting is a funny, lighthearted story of two girls learning to trust one another and overcoming the decade-long family dispute.
kennedy is the embodiment of chaotic lesbian, she’s flirty and she knows what she wants, while bridget is a little more reserved. I really enjoyed the queer rep in this book, and always love to get my hands on some own-voices books.
in terms of things that weren’t my favorite; this was a little too insta-love for my personal taste. the romance moved very quickly from enemies to lovers, and it takes only five days for one of the characters to drop the L word (love, not lesbian). As well as this, despite finding a lot of the dialogue amusing, some things the characters said did feel a little unnatural to me.
