This book got 4 stars for nostalgia. It has been on my bookshelf a lifetime, an old copy bought from Canton Library in Cardiff where I grew up.

The magic lies in Dougal’s fractious relationship with Brian the snail. The humour overall is a bit hit and miss but the relationship between them is the joy of the book.

A near perfect tv tie-in book, by the narrator of the tv series, hitting all the right beats without doing anything outrageous or selling the brand short.

A nice piece of 1970’s nostalgia.

And Ermintrude, the camp cow, is probably the real star of the series……isn’t that right, dear heart?

Not overly humorous on the first reading. The problem is that having read Dougal's Scottish Holiday first, I always come to these other books in the series with high expectations - and they always fail to live up to my expectations. On the second read through, when expectations are low, you can often appreciate them better for what humour there is.

Maybe a child would enjoy reading it. Maybe it would be enjoyable to read to a child. It consists of six individual stories, each of which is very quick and easy to read, so it would probably make ideal bedtime reading. Perhaps next time I read it I will feel able to increase its rating to four stars.
