A high-fashion event. A fiendish plot. A spectacular do-or-die climax.

The five-day Ascot opening is the most fashionable event in England and, some say, around the world. But it's now 1900, and Royal Ascot is different. Even the newspapers will report that opening day is not quite the gala occasion to which the British Public has become accustomed.

Yet none of them knows that among the glamorous crowds are powerful men who have come, not to watch the grand spectacle, but to create a ghastly event that will shock the world.

Unless someone stops them.

Enter Sherlock, Lucy, and the Baker Street team.

A fast-paced and thrilling take on a classic Sherlock who-done-it, with unexpected twists and turns, two strong, feisty heroines, and a touch of romance. Holmes Picks a Winner stays faithful to the spirit of the beloved original series, while introducing more intriguing relationship dynamics.

The third installment in a three-part 'season finale.

Anna Elliott is an author of historical fiction and fantasy. She enjoys stories about strong women, and loves exploring the multitude of ways women can find their unique strengths. She was delighted to lend a hand with the Sherlock & Lucy series, and thrilled to continue a new spin-off series featuring Becky and Flynn. Her first series, the Twilight of Avalon trilogy, is a retelling of the Trystan & Isolde legend. She wrote her second series, The Pride & Prejudice Chronicles , chiefly to satisfy her own curiosity about what might have happened to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and all the other wonderful cast of characters after the official end of Jane Austen’s classic work.

Another winner.

As riveting as one of the original Holmes stories. I particularly enjoy the additions of Flannery and Becky to the already exciting storyline of Holmes and Lucy. Keep them coming!

As the racing season at the Royal Ascot Racetrack commences, Sherlock Holmes and company are still embroiled in cases that involve finding Amy Thiel and ending the corruption ring known as The Syndicate. HOLMES PICKS A WINNER is the last book in the season ending trilogy that began with THE BLOOMSBURY GURU followed by HOLMES TAKES A HOLIDAY. There is no doubt that these books must be read in order.

The trail of clues that has led Holmes and his band of sleuths to the Royal Ascot Racetrack has been circuitous to say the very least. A missing person, not missing… An accidental death, not an accident… Men in trusted office, not trustworthy. Anna Elliott and Charles Veley have done a fine job of providing disparate clues that ultimately provide Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James with all they need to weave a final solution to the mysteries. Fate and facts finally balance the scales of justice in favor of the just.

As I finish this season finale in the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery series, I am happy to note that the section Historical Notes ends with "Lucy James will return." I hoped there would be more Lucy and Sherlock exploits to follow despite a new series, The Becky and Flynn Mystery Series, that takes some of the team further into the 20th century. Anna Elliott is the author of the first (and so far only) book titled GUARDED GROUND: A Becky & Flynn WWI Mystery. Are we looking at the start of a mystery dynasty?

Another Great Story

Lots of loose ends were tied together. Tight plot. Good story, well told. Ill be glad when the next story is arrives.

All of the Lucy and Sherlock stories are well written. Some are short stories, some are novelettes, and some novels. "Holmes Picks a Winner" is the longer form, and it's a great read, no pun intended.

In some of the recent stories, several issues were continuing. Jack had been accused of two murders, but not yet charged criminally. The corrupt police leadership stopped short of the top man, but there were several key police figures whose criminality includes a plot to kill the Crown Prince at Royal Ascot. Amy previously had been kidnapped, and her fate was unknown to Holmes and company.

So, Lucy, Watson, and Holmes have to find and save Amy, protect and save the Crown Prince, and clear and save Jack from possible criminal charges.

SPOILER ALERT: You will be pleased with the resolution of these issues.

Good Mystery

Ok, so I read books 1 and 2 and loved them. They were written solely by Charles Veley and reminded me very much of the old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies. This book did not. As a matter of fact, Sherlock Holmes only played a minor role. Each chapter was narrated by a different character, Lucy, Watson, Becky, Flynn, etc. At times I was in the middle of a chapter and did not know who the narrator was. Also, this book seemed to start in the middle of a mystery, maybe a continuation of the prior book in the series? Anyways, I was lost for a good part of the book. I have not read the whole series, just 1, 2, and this book, which was on sale. The mystery was good once I caught up to what was going on. But it was not my idea of Sherlock Holmes. It seemed a whole new series, Lucy Holmes. If this had been advertised as a historical cozy mystery, or just Lucy Holmes, it would warrant a 5 rating.

What a way to conclude a season! This whole series is like a DVD collection, except you view the film within your mind.
Great characters, action and detection aplenty and never a dull moment as there are quite a few twists in the path to the end.
May Holmes enjoy a brief but relaxing Christmas Season before picking up his magnifying glass again next year (2022) and facing some tough, challenging new cases.
A huge thank-you to authors Charles Veley and Anna Elliott for my ARC copy. And please note, this in no way influenced my review.
Highly recommended book and series.

This was so exciting to read and a real thrilling story as various people got shot at, kidnapped, beat up and tied up and hidden away. I found the event of the "Cup" and the attendance by the Prince quite an exciting time. This was a bit confusing to rad as I didn't read the others in the series first.

twists

This story has more twists than a dog’s leg. This was quite the challenge to figure out the many mysteries before you read the solutions. Too bad I had to read so many to get to this one. Ok what’s next?

As usual a very entertaining book. Love the whole series and find them true to the Doyle Holmes with the added twist of a daughter equal in so many ways to Holmes himself. Do keep on writing.

Once again these authors deliver a book that I have a hard time putting down. I really need to remember not to start a book by them when I don't have a few hours available. The Syndicate is involved again. They have Amy and are closing in on Jack. I was very nervous about my favorite characters numerous times.

Thank you to the authors for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. - If you haven't tried this series, you really should!

Is this the end of the Syndicate, in this final part of the trilogy? Great read as always, very clever plotting by Veley and Elliot with lots of guesses and double guesses. Definitely looking out for the next installment. I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion
