The magus Agrippina saves the munchkin hero Erich by the skin of his teeth. But this favor does not come without a cost—she brings news that little Elisa is actually a changeling! To protect his sister’s future, Erich’s only choice is to accompany the magus to the imperial capital as a servant, leaving his hometown behind...but not before making an oath to his childhood friend. When fairies suddenly appear on his path to the capital, will he be able to avoid a critical failure?! The Henderson scale-breaking, number-crunching TRPG adventure returns for another session!
I’m happy about the amount of detail the author is putting into the world building of this series. Unfortunately for this volume, I have an aversion to stories where changelings and fairies play significant roles as every time I see the word “fey”, my brain spasms. That being said it was fine and looks like next volume will have a different focus. I do hope Erich becomes less weepy going forward.
Having recovered from his fight with the kidnappers of his little sister, Erich learns his sister is a changeling: a fey in a mortal body. Society fears such people since they have a tendency to loose control over their magic, and if they want a normal life they need to follow training at the Magus Academy. Doing so is expensive, and Erich joins the elf Agrippina as a servant to pay for the training. The trip from his old home to the Academy though is a bit more challenging then expected.
The story shines in the world building department. The races feel distinct and different from humans and the world appears lived in. The story is a bit darker than volume 1 with rather detailed combat descriptions and a rather twisted plot line that is a bit of a mirror towards Erich's own family life. Interesting, even though I am not a particular big fan of fights. The Henderson after story was certainly more interesting then the one from volume 1. The system mechanics are a bit of a disappointment, but that is not too different from the previous parts. The women in Erich's life all have yandere tendencies, which might not be for everybody. The pacing is also on the slow side.
Still, I enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the next part.
Continues to be solid enough. Still not fully on board as a "for anyone" kind of Isekai but it's nice to see a story where family, actual love, and so much are important.
