Am I an adult who just read a junior novelization? Yes, yes I am. And did I love it? Yes, yes I friggin did! This was such a fun, and unexpectedly emotional, read about family dynamics, belonging, and standing in your own power. I really can't wait to see the film!
I’m going to do what I don’t usually do with my Goodreads reviews … I’m going to spoilerize. Because my God that ending … that ending … Mirabel gets her own door!!! Sort of.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
When you loved the movie and couldn't resist to buy the book.. Maybe because I really loved the movie and got obcessed with the songs, I felt the lack of it. I also got mad not just with Abuela's reaction, but every member of the family to Mirabel's misfortune in the written form.. I don't know~ the only good points are the illustrations, they are really pretty and also the backstory of Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro was more deeply told here.. other than that it's a no no from me ><
Listen, I like Encanto the normal amount. No, that previous statement is a lie because I love Encanto a huge amount, so many huge amount that it is the only content I consume after three weeks of watching it. I cried when Mirabel cried, I laughed when the family laughed, and....I just love this movie, okay? :")
So when I found out that there is a novellization of course I have to read it lol. The novellization follows the same story from the movie--adding a little bit here and there--and I feel, from the emotional standpoint, some emotional scenes are handed better in the novellization. There are some comedic and iconic moment that doesn't translate as well on the page, but overall, I think this is a pretty good novellization of the movie.
I especially loved the epilogue, because yes, I think there are some loose ties that still needs to be tied up even after the ending. And the epilogue put a sweet end to it. Mirabel is an incredible protagonist and her relationship with the family, especially her Abuela is explored beautifully and as complicated as they are, they are family who loves each other.
And in the end, like she said
Well, sometimes our gifts are harder to see than others--sometimes our gifts are different than you might think. And sometimes if you look really close.....if you open your eyes....you just migh find you'll never needed one.
I aboslutely adore this movie, but unfortunately this novelizationd doesn't do it any favors. Like all novelizations of musicals, it has the issue or having to adjust the pacing once the songs are removed, and it doesn't recover well. It also includes some differences from the movie. I know novels tend to be based on earlier versions of scripts and especially an animated movie might go through minor changes until very late in production, but I can't help thinking there has to be some way to mitigate this if the stores are theoretically supposed to be exactly the same.
Cute!! She writes a solid JR novel. I’ve actually already seen Encanto (sssh) and felt like it did a very good job capturing the spirit and tone of the film, especially with mirabel’s voice.
Beware, this is NOT the novel written by Angela Cervantes, but the full-color illustrated album with far less, simpler texts. The author is uncredited.
It's not a big secret, I loved Encanto. But short after its release, when I wanted to catch the artbook, it was impossible to put hands on it. So instead I ordered the illustrated book to still have beautiful pictures. And the contract is 200% fulfilled : the book is GORGEOUS. Respecting the movie's visuel identity but having its own charm, it's a delight to the eye : colorful, detailed, incredibly expressive. And if the story follows closely the original, the illustrations offer a whole new version of the scenes.
Finally, the weakness lies in the story : if at the beginning the movie's scenario is precisely detailed, the second half is A LOT more like a summary. If you know the movie, you'll just feel it rushed, but no big deal. However, a child discovering it for the first time with this book probably wouldn't get it all.
It's still a great illustrated album, great for a one-evening read.
OMG. After reading a book, then watching a movie, the book is always better in some opinions. But after finishing an amazing movie then experiencing the novelization, my thoughts expanded. Would I truly love this book as much as I loved the movie? When I tried it out, I was instantly brought back to Mirabel's experiences, and I loved it as much as every time I spent singing the movie tracks. No major parts were left out of the process, and the journey every character took was just as pleasant and inviting as the movie! Angela Cervantes did an excellent job!!!
A year late to the party we are fully obsessed with encanto over here. After watching the movie a few times I found the audiobook so Grace could listen to it and we all ended up enjoying it. Some of the magic of encanto is of course the music, which isn’t a part of the book, but otherwise it matches the movie almost line for line and describes the setting and actions of the movie in an engaging well. A great listen for kids (and adults) who enjoy the movie.
If I told you how many times I watched this movie.... You would ask me if I have nothing else to do. Ahahah Whilst reading this the songs were playing on my mind and I had such a warm feeling! This is sooo cute and I will love to read this to my lil nephew and niece!
I really enjoyed my time reading this book. Yes, it’s literally the Encanto-film in a book format, but it was great either way.
Encanto is an enchanting story about finding your place and dealing with complicated family dynamics.
The thing that dragged this rating down a smidge is the fact that stuff is being told, not shown. In a movie, it’s easier for the viewer to understand things through symbolism. But in this book, many underlaying things were told.
For example: when Isabella starts creating asymmetrical cacti, the book literally said “she felt free”. But in the movie, it’s shown symbolically through the contrast of the beautiful roses and the imperfect cacti.
I've never saw the movie, so when I read the book the story left me awestruck. Disney made an awesome story about a girl who did not fit in, but found a way for everyone to fit. It wasn't the greatest way for everyone to fit in either. It broke the negative perspective her parents and community members thought of people, it had consequences as well. It did reintroduce a strong, but important feeling almost every Disney movie for kids reintroduces. That feeling is love. But it also reintroduces warmth, family, chaos, consequences and forgiveness.
This book is worth it for the 8-page full color insert. The insert has a picture and explanation of each of the major characters in the movie. My favorite thing that I didn't notice in the movie was Bruno constantly saying, "Uno, dos, tres, four, five, six."
