Until now.

Things are changing. The Axiom Government has caught wind of an immune and will stop at nothing to hunt them down. Amrey must leave, but it will have a cost.

The story itself is ok, it’s reminiscent of Divergent. My main problem was that it must not have been proof read. So the use of the wrong word on several occasions was distracting for me. For instance tunicate was used twice instead of tourniquet when a character was injured. Also twice it was said a character “pierces his lips” when I’m guessing they meant purses. There were also a few things that felt a bit unbelievable, like when a character seemingly kicked a door open with ease when it was frozen shut. I’ll stop there because I feel bad about being critical, it just wasn’t my favorite. 🥴

Hi everyone!

Since I wrote this book, I’m wholeheartedly biased, *hence the 5-star review* but I couldn’t not advocate for Axiom one more time.

I started writing Axiom when I was 15 and struggled to find a story that I loved, so I wrote my own. It’s inspired by my favourites, Divergent, Hunger Games, all the stories I loved as a teenager.

At its heart, Axiom is a story about finding your voice. The protagonist Amrey spent her whole life conforming to other people’s rules and ideologies on how she should act. Fighting and acting impulsively were her way to combat that.

It’s written from Amrey’s perspective and follows her as she comes into her graduating year in Axiom, a city that prohibits lying by yearly truth serum injections and that forbids genders to interact until their arranged marriage.

And Amrey has done both.

Axiom has more than just a badass female heroine.
-It has romance *a love triangle of sorts, forbidden love and hate to love*
-Side characters that will make you laugh and cry
-and family dynamics and secrets that will have you gasping.

I had the best time as a teenager reading books like Divergent, The Hunger Games, The giver and I just want to give everyone reading Axiom the same experience.

So thank you so much for reading my book! I really hope you love the story and characters as much as I do! <3

I didn’t finish this book on account of:
- it was the exact plot of Divergent, being passed off as something new
- there were frequent spelling mistakes
- consistently incorrect punctuation
- the info-dumping took place through dialogue which made it not only boring, but also unrealistic because NOBODY talks like that
- the writing was so dull, it was very literal and written like a recount instead of a story
I COULD NOT PERSEVERE

A fabulous and immersive debut novel from an incredibly talented young writer! I could barely put it down, constantly kept its pace up and the world building was top class.

I also didn’t guess the twist - which is a rarity for me! It feels like this could be the YA dystopian novel of its generation. The only disappointment is that I now have to wait for the sequel. Highly recommend

Divergent if it was written by someone who didn’t pass 5th grade English.

This is not my usual type of book but it was chosen for a book club. While some may consider this an “easy read” the vast amount of spelling errors, poor grammar and repetitive storytelling made it a SLOG to get through.

The plot had some potential but was poorly told with overly dramatic dialogue (through gritted teeth and many, many grins.)

It would have benefited from a deeper backstory about the truth serum so the reader could resonate and connect with the characters. Instead, everything felt rushed and underdeveloped.

PROOFREAD. The amount of misspelling, repetition, incorrect punctuation, and straight up misuse of words was appalling. (My favourite was plutonic in place of platonic)
I am not sure how these were missed; it was jarring.

The general writing in this book is poor. The first person narrative wavered frequently into omniscience. The main character can’t know how her peers are feeling, she can maybe tell and infer from expression but the poor writing made out she was all-knowing when it suited.
Additionally, the focus on her appearance in first person came across as self indulgent, (every outfit clung in all the right places: i.e let the reader know, not so subtly, that the 17 year old protagonist is meant to be attractive). This may be a personal pet peeve of mine, but we do not need to know what characters look like in this manner when it adds nothing to the story. It’s poor storytelling and can undermine the plot.

I know this isn’t meant to be a literary masterpiece and most likely just a bit of fun, but the writing made it impossible. Every fight starts with a leg trip, dialogue is ‘barked’ , ‘grinned’ or ‘yelled through gritted teeth’ which was sometimes quite literally impossible, (we tried)

I’ve not watched or read divergent so cannot comment on plot similarities but this did bring me back to age 12, reading a Wattpad fan fic. Don’t think I’ll be reading part 2.

While there’s nothing wrong in reading these types of books, it’s sad to see ‘booktok’ promoting and churning out badly written, undeveloped books, creating a demand and new wave of low expectations. While all books don’t have to be thought provoking or say something about the world, they should still serve a purpose but this missed the mark and I’m seeing this too often.

Booktok got me on this one.

I kept seeing the clips and it interested me for sure. Any time there's compulsive truth I think it's a really interesting premise and makes people be more creative.

Unfortunately, it definitely read as a debut novel. It didn't feel super polished and the pacing was a bit odd to me. We didn't get to even settle into the concept of the truth serum before it was already being defied by all these people
The big shift for our MC happens a little too early in my opinion.

I also thought they said "Axiom" wayyyyyyy too much. It was noticable. It at times felt stilted

I will say that while I read and write a lot of YA, I am out of the age range now, so perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I was younger and have been less critical. In comparison to some others in the genre though, I would say it could have used some more in depth work.

I give this a solid 3.5. It was a pretty easy read, and I’m 100% team Jaxon (although I love Kale too). There was a lot of surprising moments I wasn’t ready for, so it kept me reading. As soon as I heard it was inspired by Divergent, I was sold, and surprisingly, it was, so it made my heart happy. Amrey was a little annoying, and some phrases and actions were repeated too much, but other than that, it was good!

I absolutely loved this book!
I was sooo invested from the start!!!
The story follows Amrey and her life in Axiom. But life in Axiom is not what she’s been told to believe. There are lies and secrets hidden within the walls of her city. Her world gets turned upside down and she finds herself running from everything she's known... her family and friends. Can she save her loved ones from the lie that is Axiom?

If you love Divergent, the Giver and Shatter Me, you’re going to want to read this NOW! I went into this book so excited because I haven’t read a book similar to these titles in years, and I was not disappointed at all!!!
Ahhhh I could go on and on about how much I loved this book and wish I could be friends with Amrey, mostly because she would do anything for the people she loves and that makes me love her even more!
Most of the time I was on the edge of my seat stressed about what she was going to do next or what was going to happen! The anticipation was amazing and I often had to remind myself that this is a book and not happening in real life! And not to mention all the twists and turns of this plot. Trust me when I say, you won’t know what’s going to happen to next…

Alright. I read this for fun, and it was, I'll admit, fun. Not for the entirely good reasons though.

You can clearly see this is inspired by divergent, as some of the plot points seem to be literally copy pasted into this novel. Even the name of the divergent people - subversive- screams divergent. As well as the author's general way of describing the environment;

"Where am I? Trees so tall they reach the sky, casting haunting shadows over me. Crows flying above, their caws teasing, like they know something I don’t."

Serum crow scene, anyone? No? At least she changed the ferry wheel scene to one with a cable cart and switched the protagonist with a fear of heights.

Furthermore, every single possible plottwist was predictable-

1. Best friends with a super likeable pretty girl due to "traumatic, unforeseen" circumstances
2. Dead parents. Or are they?
3. Lost siblings. Or are they?
4. Subversive? More like Subversive², chosen one edition
5. Second guy she has an actual conversation with turns out to have feelings for her? Did not see that one coming, wow

Also, I have a bone to pick with the names. What do you mean the (highly possible) main love interest's name is KALE? You're gonna make girl fall in love with a salad? Apart from Mags being short for Magdolia being a crime, you also have the second love interest, *checks smudged handwriting*, Jazz.

I'm even willing to overlook the fact that Amrey's name is Amrey, and that their surnames are based off rank- books are allowed to have their little quirks, I get where she wants to go with it, but dude, Jazz salad is too much for me. Overall, the names felt like someone was clearly fishing in the funky fiction naming pond- which is, these days, more miss than hit, if you ask me. Or any keighleiayeigh, really. Not that there's anything wrong with fictional names persay, I can handle them, but having an Owen, Griffin AND an Archer in a book aside from the ones I already mentioned you are. Making Choices™️ that affect the seriousness of your novel.

Also, (this one is directed at the editor) there were several important moments ruined by typos. Lo and behold:

"OK, I get it; from now on, we’ll just be plutonic, only talk about training.”

WHAT? Is he a zodiac girly? I get looking over mistakes, and if this novel were self published it would've been fine, but there's an actual publishing house attached to this mess. Step aside Plato, I guess mercury is in retrograde.

In all seriousness, the author was fine. It was an enjoyable, speedy read. She obviously tried her best, and if either an editor had helped smooth this out to make it more her own, or if I had been twelve and without a general clue about literature and the book she took inspiration from, we would've been fine. In fact, I still had fun in spite of those things, were it only for the fact that I had something to laugh at every now and then.

That being said, if you're looking for something dystopian that has more world-building, it's clear "own" identity something that is not early YA, I would not recommend this. If you're younger, or trying to fit something in between heavy literature like I was- give it a go, it might tickle your fancy :)

I couldn't finish this book. I felt as though instead of letting the world unfold it was just straight up explained through exposition. Show us, don't tell us. The explanation and constant exposition was distracting and burst any ounce of immersion I could muster.

⭐️ 3,5

3.5 ⭐️, bonkers ass book!
I could definitely tell that it was written when the author was quite young but it actually was a very really good book, I was extremely intruiged by the plot and IM ROOTING FOR KALE AND AMREY SO BAD. I unfortunately always Fall harder for the first man in a love triangle I can’t lie. I always feel so bad for him and that just makes me fall in love with him…
But Jaxon is sooo good aswell. Ugh!
Cried at the end icl I hate a family death always makes me weep, and I’m so raged because I can’t find the second book anywhere 😩

QUOTES <3:
"Kale. I'm about to give up hope when he looks at me."
Okay I guess the writing wasn't very striking, and all I care about is Kale lol. Still, I thought I remembered more sweet lines being highlighted??

I started reading Axiom because my Divergent-Hunger-Games-Maze-Runner-all-2010s-dystopian-books-fan-sister loved it. Though I didn't quite loved it myself, I found Axiom to be an okay book, and enjoyed the read - and I have a few things to say about it.

Here's your warning : there's a whole lot of spoilers ahead.

to conclude...

"You've got this." [...] "Nearly there."

Though it was "just" an okay book, Axiom is a very encouraging debut, especially as it is not a standalone. I think it suffers from the typical first-book-syndrome : a little boring but picking up towards the end! I'm confident what's next will be great, Axiom has a lot of potential. Can't wait to read the sequel!!

I loved this book, though I was a bit sceptical at the beginning because of how much it reminded me of divergent and I was afraid it was just going to be a copy. But as soon as Amrey leaves Axiom the book gets 10 times better.
It really is an awesome book, I loved the way it's written, making it super easy to read. The characters are extremely interesting though I regret that some of them weren't too developed (especially Sacha and Kale).
I really hope we'll get another book following this one.

Madison Rose is extremely talented and I cannot wait to read more of her works.

DNF'd at 60%. I really tried to get into it but just never found myself wanting to reach for it. It's been very heavily influenced by divergent, and really the main thing that sold me on the book was the authors short videos selling it on tiktok where she talks about this mysterious guy saving her when it's illegal to speak to or touch the opposite gender.. yeah.. where is he? It lasted like 2.5 seconds. I needed more of that
