School of Charm #6

The Mischievous Miss Charlotte

Rate this book
Charlotte despises Lord Thomas, the man she's supposed to marry. Of course, she hasn't actually met him, but from what she's heard, he's exactly the sort of man she can't stand. Not at all like that handsome, witty, romantic young gentleman she met at the booksellers. Now he has her head swirling with ideas of what ifs and maybe somedays. But she'll never have her happily ever after if she doesn't rid herself of that stodgy Lord Thomas first. If only she can drive her intended away before her new suitor's kisses make her lose her head—and her heart—altogether.

Lord Thomas didn't intend to fall in love with anyone, least of all the young lady his parents wish him to wed. But it's love at first sight when he meets the dazzlingly quirky lady in the bookshop. When he realizes who she is, it's almost too good to be true. Or rather, it is definitely too good to be true because the woman he loves makes it clear that she despises him in turn. Or no...she despises the man she thinks is Lord Thomas. Not him. Not exactly. If he can just win her over before she finds out the truth, they might find true love. Either that or he'll lose her forever...

Charlotte's parents want her to marry Lord Thomas. Although she has never seen him, she does not want to marry him. Lord Thomas is picking up books from the shop for his friend, Paul. She hears the bookseller refer to Lord Paul and obviously thinks that's who he is (but it's Lord Thomas). It's a case of mistaken identity. I kept thinking "just tell her who you really are".Good characters and storyline. A lovely HEA. Enjoyable and entertaining. 4☆

The Mischievous Miss Charlotte was such a fun light read. This was my first Maggie Dallen book, and it won’t be my last.

A love story that has a meet cute in a bookstore? Yes please.

Charlotte and Thomas had such a sweet chemistry between them, with fun side character friends I can’t wait to get to know better in the next book of the series.

I love all the time they spent together getting to know one another better on their own terms. Bookstores, tea, and masquerade balls, not to mention those secret meetings in the library. Perhaps my favorite part was the charming way Thomas finally introduce himself property. Such a fun fast read that kept me wanting more!

“He never lost sight of her. How could he when she was his own personal sunshine in the midst of a swirl of dull property and artifice?”

What if you were expected to marry someone, and everything you heard about that person made you sure you’d despise him?

Charlotte has not met her intended Thomas, but has heard he is just like his father. She has met his father and can’t imagine being happy with a marriage to a man like that, so she puts off meeting her betrothed.

While on her own she meets a man in a bookshop, who is picking up a package reserved for Lord Paul. She and this man share an ability to easily converse about all the books they both love. As they find time to meet up and get to know each other better, she falls in love and must decide what to do with her betrothal.

Lord Thomas doesn’t expect to like the lady his parents have set up a betrothal with for him. Relieved when she puts off meeting him, he runs into a woman he likes very much. A lady that mistakes him for Lord Paul.

This is the sixth book in the series & the school has a new Headmistress & new pupils, Charlotte is a delight she’s certainly not the quiet demure lady her parents wish her to be, Thomas is an utter romantic at heart & so different from his father who he resembles. When they meet on a bookshop their attraction is immediate & only grows with each stolen meeting but misunderstandings, assumptions & secrets are always going to cause things to go pear shaped once the truth is revealed. I loved this charming romance & was really routing for things to go well for Thomas & Lottie.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

As he entered the bookstore, he bumped into a lady. "She was enchanting. Everything about her, from the silly feather in her cap to the pale-yellow gown, to the slippers on her feet. She was beautiful, yes. But she also...glowed."

Looking at him "she could not have moved if she had tried. The look in his eyes was so very arresting. Her body was quite paralyzed, but her heart....Oh, her heart would give out if it kept up this pace."

Oh yes, it got my attention from the start and I could not wait to see what would happen to these two! They did not realize who each other were, but how soon would they find out?

Another sweet addition to this fun series that I have enjoyed so much!! Loved these characters and their journey to a happy ever after!

Short but sweet

This was such a sweet story to read, it was only 157 pages but written so beautifully. It was such a change to see that a character actually wore glasses! I love the idea of getting people completely wrong as they both thought about each other. It's not raunchy in the slightest but sometimes all I want to read is a gentle romance.

This is the sixth book in the School of Charm series. There is a new headmistress at the finishing school and a new group of girls who are expected by their parents to learn all
they need to know to marry well. Mischievous Miss Charlotte is shopping in a bookstore where she meets a charming and handsome young man. Even though her parents have already chosen the man she’ll marry after the finishing school, Charlotte continues to see the young man she met in the bookstore.

She’s sure she’s going to despise the man her parents have chosen for her even though she’s never met him. She’s met his father and she’s heard young Lord Thomas is just like him. And his father is the kind of man she can’t stand. She avoids meeting young Lord Thomas because she’s determined to marry Lord Paul, her charming friend from the bookstore. Eventually, she learns that it’s all been a case of mistaken identity…

This book felt a little contrived and I became annoyed with some of the plot twists that kept Lord Thomas from revealing that he’s been the man her parents intended for her all along. The reader knows from the beginning and it was tiresome by the time it all came out. I still plan to finish the series, but am hoping that when the last two books are available they’ll feel a little fresher than this one.

Its a short read, but it felt long. I liked the premise but unfortunately all the obstacles to him revealing the truth to her just got ridiculous and annoying by the end.

The Mischievous Miss Charlotte is book 6 in the author's School of Charm series and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In this book we continue with a new headmistress running the school and new students. Miss Charlotte is one of them and she has a problem. Her family has arranged a marriage between her and Lord Thomas and she despises the man. At least she thinks she does because the truth is she hasn't met him yet. But a trip to the bookstore results in a delightful meet-cute that sets things in motion, only Charlotte thinks she's met Lord Paul - Thomas's best friend. Before Thomas can correct her assumption, Charlotte leaves thinking about the man she just met, Lord Paul.

Thomas wasn't happy about being forced into an arranged marriage, but as the second son he has little choice in the matter. When he realizes that the delightful girl from the bookstore is actually his intended, the prospect becomes much more palatable. In fact, he's smitten but he needs to clarify who he is so there are no awkward surprises when they are formally introduced to each other in front of their families and friends.

But while Charlotte's feelings are growing stronger for Lord Paul, she's increasingly nervous about meeting Lord Thomas formally and makes excuses when he comes to call. And when they share a kiss in the moonlight, Charlotte knows she can't go through with a wedding to Lord Thomas because she's in love with Lord Paul. Thomas trips over himself time and again trying to explain the name mix-up, but when Charlotte finally figures it out for herself, she questions Thomas's motives and is hurt that he isn't present to sign the marriage contracts himself - a clear sign to Charlotte that he doesn't want to marry her after all.

But Thomas wants Charlotte more than she realizes. He just doesn't want her to have her hand forced. So when friends and family step in to help the couple along, will Thomas finally be able to explain everything? Will Charlotte break off the engagement?

Thomas's missed opportunities for coming clean with Charlotte had real potential for getting tedious but honestly they didn't for me. It was like each time was justified so it didn't feel forced and annoying. I really enjoyed this story as a result. I liked the pacing, although the house party days all seemed to blend together. Not a big deal overall, but I really liked how our couple communicated at the end and get their say in their wedding plans. This book also sets up the next in the series which centers on Mary and Lord Paul. I'm looking forward to reading their story.

This is a sweet, clean read. Chaste kisses and embraces only. I give this book 4 stars.

The School of Charm series by Maggie Dallen is a sweet and satisfying collection of quick reads that are perfect for young readers starting to explore romance. Each story features lovable, relatable characters and follows a light, predictable arc—but in a way that feels cozy and comforting rather than stale.

What I appreciate most is how age-appropriate the content is. There's nothing more than kissing, and the relationships are respectful, kind, and rooted in good friendships. As a parent of tweens just beginning to show interest in romance books, this series has been a fantastic find. The stories provide just enough emotional depth and romantic spark without diving into territory they’re not quite ready for.

I’m giving the series 4 stars—not because anything was lacking, but simply because I usually reserve 5 stars for books I want to reread or that truly wow me. These are quick, sweet reads that I highly recommend—especially if, like me, you started with more intense romance novels at a young age (Flowers in the Attic, anyone?) and are looking for something gentler for your own kids.

Assumptions, mistaken identity, and misunderstanding really do make a muddle of things in this witty Regency romance. Charlotte has been betrothed to a man she has never met ever since she was a toddler. Apart from being told that the man she is to marry is just like his father, whom she abhors, she knows very little about Lord Thomas. Thomas similarly has been told that Miss Charlotte is just like her mother, which fills him with dread. In an era of arranged marriages, it is not unusual that a couple did not meet until shortly before their wedding. However, in this case, two young people could have been spared a multitude of misgivings if only their thoughtless parents had taken the time to introduce them earlier in life. Fortunately, with a little help from their friends, Charlotte and Thomas finally manage to overcome their preconceptions and discover their true feelings, bringing this loveable couple everything they deserve. I received a copy of this entertaining romance as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This book is such a fun, entertaining, mischievous, clever, swoony overall Lovely read. I was hooked from the the first page of this novel. It was amusing when the lovely Charlotte was caught sort of hiding in her closet thinking of her situation and future events. Then there was the super cute meet cute meeting with the one and only Lord Thomas/Paul.  All the misunderstandings...I think on Charlotte's part more so.. made their situation more intriguing and very entertaining. You'll wonder what will happen next. This read will keep you hooked all throughout the book.

Lord Thomas' romantic side kind of complicated things and extended the confusion even more so but also helped develop their feelings for each other even more. There are so many swoony, cute and fun moments and banters between Charlotte and the Lord. You will encounter many interesting characters that will add on to the entertainment of this heartwarming sweet story. This book/ the whole School of Charm series has been an amazing read for me. I'm am hooked.

Thomas and Charlotte had never met. But both knew their parents expected them to marry each other to suit their fathers. Charlotte has just returned from overseas travel with her great aunt and moved into the nearby Charm School. She pretended to be sick when Thomas and his mother came to the school to meet her because she has heard that Thomas is just as stern and boring as his father. Later she visited a book store and bumped into Thomas but the bookshop owner lead her to believe his name was Lord Paul. They hit it off and 'Paul' invites her to a sweet shop when she suddenly is back with her friend Mary telling Lord Paul goodbye. What a riot as Thomas keeps meeting Charlotte for short inappropriate interludes where they fall more and more in love while Mary tells her stories from Lord Paul's childhood that Charlotte thinks are about her love! I recommend this book filled with Dallen's levity.

I don’t have easy access to the first five books in this series, so I almost skipped it. The summary sounded so fun, though, I decided to try it anyway. And I’m so glad I did! It is such an enjoyable, (mostly) lighthearted, unique regency-style love story. The main characters are so adorable and easy to root for. I do feel like the writing got a bit … rushed, maybe?? toward the end … just kind of sloppy. Which is why I’m not giving it five stars. But I will definitely read the rest of the series.

An arranged marriage, resistance to meet spouse-to-be, mistaken identity. I enjoyed reading Thomas and Charlotte's story while meeting Mary, Miss Farthington and Lydia of School of Charm and Thomas's best friend. I liked the unexpected parental help that helped Thomas and Charlotte unravel their misunderstandings. Great dialogue and one liners, fun friend moments and reading about the couples courtship.

This book truly felt different from the rest. A case of mistaken identity is a great way to switch things up from the damsels in distress and enemies-to-lovers tropes that we saw in the first few books—not that I didn’t love them. I did find myself wondering just how long this misunderstanding could go on though, and boy did it take a while for the truth to come out! Charlotte and Thomas were such an adorable pair though!

Charlotte and Thomas's story involving mistaken identity is quite charming. Despite their overbearing families, I found the two of them delightful.
I particularly enjoyed their friends, Paul and Mary and look forward to reading their story next.

I rated this 3.5 stars. The story is cute, but I was bugged by the miscommunication, the not listening to what each other has to say. It does not bode well for future happiness. I did like that they saw each other and accepted what their families did not. Trigger warning for extremely controlling parents, verbal abuse.

Slow moving.

This was such a slow moving story. I just kept thinking , ok, we know what is going to happen. Lets move it along. I finally started just skipping paragraphs and pages.

A short & sweet fluffy Regency romance, with low stakes angst. I recommend reading the previous books in the series, and if you like completeness I also recommend reading the Sweet Romance series that precedes this series.
