Coco Rules takes 30 quotes from the inimitable Coco Chanel and translates them into modern, practical style rules to live by.
With her trademark acerbic wit and no-nonsense attitude, Coco Chanel has always been a wonderfully entertaining source on matters of life and style. Coco Rules gathers her words of wisdom on both fashion and empowerment and uses them to provide solutions to many of the style-based conundrums you might encounter, as well as inspiration on how to be the very best version of yourself - strong, fearless and confident - no matter what you wear.
Written by acclaimed fashion journalist Katherine Ormerod, each rule is accompanied by a bold and stylish illustration from Carolina Melis.
I received a gifted advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Lovebookstours.
Coco Rules is a book I jumped at the chance to read and review. Chanel has always been a fashion brand I've longed to own a piece of and the closest I've got is the perfumes which I absolutely adore! This book is both vibrant and inspiring and I loved the illustrations, quotes and choices of colours used throughout. This book is such a great tribute to such an amazing, inspirational, strong and empowering woman. So much of Chanels advice and quotes are timeless much like her fashion and this book is a daily reminder of some wonderful, inspiring and confidence building inspiration from such an amazing lady. If you love fashion, want more confidence or empowerment in your life this is the perfect book to have handy. This is one I'll never part with and will always be handy for a daily dose of inspiration whenever I need it.
It's unbelieveable to think Coco Chanel lived a century ago. She started life in an orphanage and was raised in a convent, but she went on to smash every glass ceiling to become the world's richest woman and a feminist icon. Her style is timeless and she is still the quintessential queen of fashion 100 years later. It's worth noting that Chanel was working at a time when most women didn't even have the vote, but she took the fashion world by storm, preaching to liberate women from the constraints of corsets and even giving fashion advice to men; her style was androgynous and she made it permissable for women to wear simple outfits like trousers and a striped sweater. I have been obsessed by Chanel for many years, devouring every article, film and book about her life and I'm thrilled to say this one, written by fashion journalist Katherine Ormerod and illustrated beautifully by Carolina Melis, doesn't disappoint. It discusses her style tips and how they are still relevant today, her innovative style ideas like the LBD, the 2.55 quilted handbag and two tone shoes. Ormerod takes her style quotes from tip to toe, from hairstyles to handbags and elaborates on each one in a relevant way in bite size chapters. This book reminds us how Chanel deviated from the norm with ideas such as wearing cardigans back to front, demonstrating she was always 100% unique. She broke rules and smashed fashion dictats. She pioneered attitudes like you can wear outfits more than once, fashion rules still followed by icons such as Kate Middleton and Michelle Obama. She championed having a few style staples and mixing and matching, making fashion accessible for the masses. It also goes into the psychology of looking good and reminds us you have to be beautiful within to be beautiful without. She smashed preconceived ideas about what fashion is and its huge role in our life. The name Coco Chanel is synonymous with class, style, elegance and, as this book shows, even wit. I learnt a great deal from this book and every chapter is quote-worthy, especially reminding us fashion is everywhere, not just how we dress but how we view ourselves and the world around us. It reiterates some familiar anecdotes but their crisp and beautifully illustrated delivery makes them seem fresh. This book gives inspiration and advice on good days and bad. It is an essential fashion bible and every home needs one. Put simply, I adored it. A definitive five stars from me.

This a stunning hardback book that takes 30 qoutes from the amazing Coco Chanel herself and has used them to provide 30 modern and practical styles for everyone to live by today, both in terms of fashion and empowerment. This such a super cute read that is so colourful and vibrant and just screams empowerment with every page. I loved it and found something to take away from it with almost every turn of the page. A perfect read for if you want some stylish advice, are feeling like you need a little more empowerment in your life or you just love the icon that is Coco Chanel.
When I saw this book I just have to have it and I'm so glad I have. My daughter was learning about Coco Chanel in school so at first I thought yes she will love this but I might just keep it for myself 🤣
I have really enjoyed slowly working my way through it, it's actually quite an inspiring book in so many ways. And it's no just about Coco but how we can all follow these rules to live a fulfilling life.
The layout and general structure of the book is so well done and it's just stunning. Thoroughly enjoyed this one!
Firstly I have to say, this book is stunning. From the cover, to the glossy pages, the size and shape of it, fonts used to illustrate different points and the illustrations inside. There is so much here that no matter your walk of life I have no doubt you will take something from this book. Personally quite a lot of Coco's advice stands to reason. It's amazing that this woman, alive 100 years ago still has such an impact on the world of fashion. Who doesn't love a LBD! Give this a go, you won't be disappointed.
What a beautiful illustrated book. I was delighted to read this as Coco Chanel is a fashion icon I admire.
30 of Coco's fashion quotes have been taken and put into context for the modern age. I like her wit and wisdom and a lot of her advice on fashion and empowerment still rings true today. Her tips are so helpful in letting you see how and what to wear to make you feel good and reinforces that beauty comes from within. I don't have the red lipstick but I do like my No. 5.
a wonderful little book modernising some of coco chanel’s quotes accompanied by beautiful illustrations. i’ve been slowly stepping into a more “fashionable” lifestyle and this was exactly what i needed, not only for some inspiration, but for some well-needed positivity; the book celebrates diversity and empowerment in fashion wonderfully. i’m so happy i spotted this in waterstones.
Today, is my spot on LoveBooksTour blog tour for Coco Rules. This beautiful and visually appealing non-fiction book about style and fashion is illustrated by Carolina Melis. This book is filled with practical advice on makeup, hair styles, choosing a perfume, and fashion in the form of 30 quotes from fashion icon Coco Chanel. This book is a perfect gift and coffee table book to display for anybody interested in style and fashion. It introduces a new 21st century readers to the fashion icon Coco Chanel, “Life and Style according to Coco Chanel” is a perfect description for this beautiful book. I loved how Chanel’s look and style tips were adapted and seemed to fit perfectly with today’s time, for the Instagram influencers, and fashionistas. The quotes are of course timeless and classic, and the illustrations in the book are fun and cool. Similar to Coco Chanel my favourite colour is black too, I also love Chanel’s No:5 perfume. I simply adored this book, and I’m sure others will too, and so I’m giving this visually stunning book 5 stars. I will treasure this little book, and use the quotes to inspire my everyday style choices. It feels like reading a fashion magazine like Vogue rather than a non-fiction book, and I like this format. The book is cool and contemporary and perfect for today’s fashionistas.
I did read this book in one sitting but also used it as an inspirational quote book. This was such a cute little book and such a joy to read. As well as having practical style tips the book also includes quotes from Coco Chanel herself. One of my favourite quotes of all time is featured in this book which is ‘In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different’.The book does have some great style tips but what I took away from reading this book is that you should pick your clothing, accessories etc that suits you and create your own style. Just because something is fashionable or has a label doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a good fit for you. Everyone has their own unique style and as Coco Chanel perfectly explains the only way to find that style is by trying new types of clothing, dressing an outfit up or down or just being a bit out there and being adventurous. I’ve taken quite a few style tips from this book and will definitely be using it as a go to guide in the future.
A book about fashion, quotes to live by but ultimately discovering your own identity through fashion as explained by the famous Coco Chanel.
Okay let's talk about the book cover itself. OMG it's gorgeous. Definitely could be used as coffee table decor 🥰 I love a hardback book!
I loved this book, I always feel pressured by social media, that I don't look like them, I don't dress like them, my hair is a mess, and that I should wear makeup everyday. But this book tells you that you are enough. To not compare yourself to anyone, that you can wear what you want, to not follow anyone else, ro have your own style, to enhance your beauty, that we all come in different shapes and sizes and to believe in yourself.
I felt better about myself after reading this book. It made me feel that I didn't have to worry anymore. It made me feel uplifted.
If you are a fan of fashion and/or Coco Chanel, then this book is for you. It takes 30 of Coco Chanel's most iconic quotes and puts them into a modern context.
As someone who has admired Coco and her rebellious attitude towards fashion, I really enjoyed reading this one. It is full of inspiring statements, like how what you might perceive as your flaws is what actually makes you unique and should be highlighted rather than covered up! And of course, everything is accompanied by great illustrations!
It is definitely a great book to just pick up once in a while and read a couple of pages when looking for some inspiration.
Thank you so much Love Books Tours and OMara Books for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Read this little book on a raining day. Quotes and designs are perfect to lift up your spirit...and makes you think. What a strong, clever and independent lady this Coco Chanel was. All of her rules apply to our life style almost a century years later. Loved it!
