They call me soulless. A destroyer of innocents. An apocalypse waiting to happen.
That’s what getting dumped at the altar will do to you.

Keeley Moore was as happy as a proverbial clam when he found his Beloved, the one woman fated to be the love of his immortal life. Jenna was smart, had a quirky mind, and promised to be the salvation he had long sought. And then she left him at the altar without so much as a single word of explanation. Naturally, he swept up the tattered remains of his heart, and swore to forget her. One hundred and thirty years later, he’s still trying NOT to think about her.

Jenna Boyle has no idea who is the tortured, tormented, and sexy-as-sin man who claims she betrayed him a century ago, but she’s not overly worried about their past. It’s the present that concerns her, mostly in getting Keeley free from the monsters who have turned him from a peaceful vampire into a Thrall, the dreaded ancestor of all Dark Ones…one who is about to go into a murderous, unstoppable killing spree. Then there’s the Weaver’s Council, who threaten to banish Jenna for crimes she doesn’t remember committing.

Although Keeley is determined to keep Jenna from hurting him again, he’s drawn to her time after time. And it’s getting increasingly difficult to convince himself that she would be better off without him in her life. If only he could find the source of his enthrallment…if only he could find a way to save Jenna without destroying himself…if only he had a future.

One Thrall and his Beloved, a bestie with a male harem, and a group of intrepid tourists tackling an international organization bent on the destruction of the mortal world…it’s just another day in the world of Katie MacAlister’s Dark Ones.

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

I WANTED to love this book! I really did want to. I feel awful about this review but I have to be honest. Because so far I’ve loved all of Katie’s books. So, what was this book lacking that the others had in spades? Well the first thing that I noticed was that I was having to force myself to read it because it was soo slow and borderline boring. Which has been unheard of for Katie!! Another thing that I noticed is that this book seemed to lack her signature sense of humor. Where are the laughs?!!! Usually a Katie MacAlister book has me laughing so hard that I can barely breathe. So not the case with this book!
I will say that it’s a good storyline but it was definitely lacking for some reason. The characters for the most part are sadly forgettable. The sole exception I think was the heroine’s sidekick Mac. She was mildly entertaining. Keeley as Dark One was kinda meh, he left a lot to be desired. Jenna as Beloved was also kinda meh. The book did get a bit better the further along I got but just when it was starting to sound like the Katie of old it was over and the book was finished. I honestly am not sure if I would recommend this particular book. Any of Katie’s other books absolutely without pause would recommend but I just can’t with this one.

A fun and sexy return to the world of the Dark Ones. As usual, MacAlister develops a somewhat convoluted storyline surrounding both Jenna and Keeley. But unraveling all the strands makes for a jolly good lark. Each has a past to unravel and overcome, while also moving forward with their relationship and hopefully finding a way to have a future together. And of course, they have to do all that while running for their lives from an evil organization that kidnapped, tortured, and has used Keeley for years. And of course, then there are the four Horsemen of the Dark Ones, who are also trying to take down said organization but are also trying to take out Keeley. Throw in a beloved, a best friend, a group of tourists, and a growing male harem . . . and you have a typical day in the mind of MacAlister! I look forward to more in this world.

I totally tried to read this!

I've read all the Dark Ones novels and enjoyed each one immensely. But this one is too slow. I found it boring and barely made it to 60 pages. That was a waste of $$. The thing I value most in a book is the ability to grab my attention right from the beginning and hold it all the way through. But this one was minus that. So sorry as I really do love Katie MacAlister' s books. Maybe the next one will be better.

This book was cute. I liked Jenna's exclaimnations when they were fighhting the bad guys, but I didn't like it as much as her earlier books in the series. But Keeley and Jenna were a cute couple.
I just felt that Keeley forgave Jenna, to fast, for deserting him, even though she had her mind cleared of her past. He should have let her grovel, a bit; but then Jenna was going through her own issues too.
All and all I did enjoy their story. And it was fast read.

Missed the wit

I have so missed the dark ones stories. Man Jenna and Keeley well perfect. Story was so great and a much needed reprieve from all the badness every where you look. Thank you for making me laugh out loud at Macs antics with her harem. Just fabulous.
Everyone needs a bit of the Dark Ones.

Another Dark One

The beginnings was very slow for me because I didn't know who the players were. Then when everything clicked I liked the book,

I own and love most of Katie Mac's books but lately they've been a bit disappointing. Rushed and with character depth sacrificed for comedic effect. This last one was all over the place. DNF
