Eala: The Mother Swan

Rate this book
A young boy named Hugo goes in search of the Eala, the magical swan his grandmother has told him about. He finds her just as she is preparing to fly between the worlds.Circling back down, Hugo climbs on her back and she takes him between the crack of night and day so he can find the songs and colors of his heart and soul.

˃˃˃ “Hugo, a small boy who has been bullied, finds comfort in visiting the swans that swim along the river. His Grandmother has told him about Eala, the mother swan, who has magic abilities. Hugo, unlike the other boys, still believes there is magic and one evening at sunset he goes in search of the mother swan seeking her magic to free him of his sadness. Once again author Ayn Cates Sullivan spins her magic through fable. This time, a story of a boy’s journey into the magic realm of nature that heals. Eala, the Mother Swan is a fable for our time, for boys and girls”"and for us all.”- Linda Foster, Choreographer

˃˃˃ “In Ayn Cates Sullivan’s bilingual picture book Eala, a magical swan helps a boy to learn the truth about who he is... The book’s English and Spanish paragraphs appear on the same page, making it easy for speakers of one language to pick up vocabulary in the other. The text is accessible and consistent in its reading level in both languages. Its descriptions are often poetic, 'Mother Swan flapped her great wings and they flew between the crack of night and day.’ In the empowering picture book Eala, a bullied boy learns that magic lives in each human being.”- Kristine Morris for Foreword Clarion Review
