Here Be Dragons #3

The Dragon Experiment

Rate this book
Who knew sleeping around could save the entire species?

I'm a simple dragon. Give me knowledge, give me research, give me rings for my hoard, and give me athletic men who want to get sweaty between the sheets . . . or anywhere else. Those things make me happy. Other things . . . well, who cares about those?

Turns out, I should have cared. Or at least paid attention. Because I somehow signed up for a scientific study run by a shy, nerdy sorcerer with the body of a god. And the study just happens to be about my favorite form of exercise.

It doesn't take long for me to know I want to do more than science with Rhys. I've never been the kind of dragon to mix feelings with fun, but Rhys could be the one person who meets all my needs, even if he won't wear a ring on every finger.

But when his research becomes more important than any of us could have imagined, our relationship enters a new phase. Now it's up to me to show Rhys how much he's worth . . . both to me and to the future of his species.

LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.

I really liked both the easily-distracted, slightly-oblivious Fabian and the more-than-a-little-insecure, workaholic Rhys, but this wasn't my favorite story in this series.

[My take on Fabian, as he reportedly looked about 20 years old, despite being a centuries-old dragon...]

For one thing, although Rhys's research involved sex, there was literally *nothing* sexy about that aspect of the book. I mean, it's research data only, so yawn.

For another, the Big Discovery™ that they made, while great, lacked any sense of immediate urgency to figure out. Like, it would *literally* cause only inconvenience for several *centuries* to come. And even then, it would've likely never actually killed anyone.

Which leads to my last point, that the book, other than a leisurely dragon flight scene, was entirely devoid of action, which is the main reason that magical fantasy stories typically engage me so completely. This left me really missing an actual Bad Guy, or even a single life-or-death situation.

So while there was romance and cuteness, there was a distinct lack of the extra "Oomph!" that I'm looking for in stories with shifters and magical beings.

In regards to steam, the author pretty much hit the Goldilocks Zone dead on, with not too much or too little, so zero complaints there.

The most exciting scene for me was Fabian's trip to the mall and his throng of overly-helpful humans, trying to help him give Rhys the perfect . And the group chat? Priceless! 🤣

My favorite side character was Kethe, who was a bit of a sage grandmother type, but also willing and more than able to call people on their bullshit, which was both touching and pretty funny more often than not.

Bottom line is, if you're looking for tons of action, this book may not be for you, but if you're looking for a goofy romance, you may want to check it out.

3.5 *filler-read-but-not-a-main-attraction* stars.

So, from the beginning of this series, I was a little afraid to read the stories of Fabian and Steffen. This book is about Fabian and how he falls in love. And, as I feared, it's super annoying.
It took a lot of patience to get through it. Fabian is so scatterbrained that it's exhausting to feel anything for him other than wanting to strangle him. And then he goes and picks someone who's just like him. Not quite, but enough to drive me crazy.
And to top it all off, the plot in this book is extremely frustrating and everyone acts totally stupid. I hate it when everything comes across so dumb.
There are still a few sweet, nice moments, but I'm very glad that I can put this book behind me.
I'm almost finished with the next book, which is so much better, and I don't understand at all that the plot of the next book wasn't developed earlier. Because my brain is about to explode when I think about how big the story about Steffen actually is and what a waste it was to develop Fabian's story so poorly.
Anyway, I have to keep reading Steffen's story and keep burning through tissues.

“I’m airing out my nether region.”
Percy only hesitates for the briefest moment before saying, “Didn’t Rhys give it a good airing last night?”
Brandt starts to laugh.
“He did.” I nod firmly. “But a man can never be too aired out.”
“There’s really no response to that,” Percy tells Brandt. “Try to remember your clothes in future, please,” he adds pointedly to me.

The Dragon Experiment is an awesome addition to this quirky, feel-good, supernatural M/M series!

Fabian, one of the millennia-old dragon shifters residing at Here Be Dragons, has been one of my favourite background characters for a while now, and it was so good to finally get to his story. Fabian has quite the sexual appetite and is constantly getting himself into situations of questionable means, much to the amusement and frustration of his dragon kin. He’s also the history buff of the group, in charge of the living archive (the history of all things dragon related), making his knowledge and research skills critical to his people and the larger community of species all cohabitating on Earth.

Always going off on tangents and forgetting what is happening around him is par of the course where Fabian is concerned, but when everyone around him starts to question how, when, and, most importantly, WHY the promiscuous dragon is wearing a magically-charged purity ring, it leads him to meeting (or re-meeting) sexy, shy scientist/sorcerer Rhys, who has been using the rings to research sex and the impact it has on the metaphysical health of participating members within the community.

Fabian is instantly fascinated by Dr Rhys and makes it his mission to get the good doctor into his bed. And although Rhys is taken aback by Fabian’s advances, he can’t help but be equally as drawn to the exuberant and one-of-a-kind dragon, entering into a passionate and fun-filled affair that turns into something pretty deep and meaningful, and unexpected, for both Fabian and Rhys alike.

This story was so much fun. This whole series (and the one that preceded it) has been one joyful reading experience after another, but this particular story really tickled me, perhaps standing out as one of my favourites among the lot.

I really liked Fabian and Rhys as lead characters, enjoying their unconventional courtship and their adorable dynamic quite a lot. They had a nice opposites-attract thing going on, making them stand out as individuals first and foremost, with their own unique personalities and amusing quirks. They fit together nicely and I liked how easily they grew in their relationship—even before either acknowledged what it was they were truly sharing together.

I loved the arc relating to the community slowly losing their magic/abilities over time and what impact that is having/may have going forward. This plot-line added an exciting element to the story that had me scrambling to try and work out (alongside our characters) what was causing the problem and how it could be solved. This was honestly the sort of larger arc that was perhaps missing from the first two books, which so nicely added some (now continued) oomph to the series that I much appreciated.

The support cast, as always, were an added bonus too, all so much fun in their varying group interactions that it made nearly every scene a pleasure to read. In particular, I still have such a crazy-intense soft-spot for paranoid security expert Stefan that I’ve been chomping at the bit to get to the final book of the series—his book—and now I cannot wait to read it, after the way this story set itself up for more big things to come.

I liken this to a comfort read and as par for the course, I had a good time visiting Fabian of the dragon clan and watching him find his soul mate.

Fabian is way out there, head high in the clouds, easily distracted mainly by researching things for or within the living archive which houses all dragonkind knowledge. He also isn’t going to say no to pretty much anything, which includes all things fun, as well as unwittingly signing up for a scientific experiment. What’s uncovered is researcher Rhys, whose studies reveal another concerning situation involving the supernatural community.

Admittedly, this was very low key, very laid back. Fabian was adorable and so was nerdy, slightly uptight Rhys. Not as funny as some books, this still succeeds, highlighting the wide cast of characters (whom I really enjoy) as they band together to tackle a problem and broaden their found family bonds!

More wonderful dragon adventures

If I want to be cheered up by a story which is full of love, laughter and a teeny bit of magic, then I know this series will deliver.

Fabian's romance is a perfect meld of his own nature, fluctuating between intense focus and mind-wandering as he finds himself intrigued by a sorcerer scientist.

I absolutely adored watching them both muddle into a friends with benefits scenario while simultaneously falling head over heels and not being able to tell how the other felt.

There's also interesting developments on the overall plot investigating the declining abilities of the Hidden Species and the Elves.

With story threads still to get woven in, I can't wait to see what's next.

“I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to ask. These dragons are lovely, but in a way a kitten high on catnip is lovely.

The author truly saved the best for last!

This trilogy is one of the very best I have read in the last several years! Fascinating, with an incredible cast of characters with truly stunning world-building, I will be revisiting it again many times in the future!!!

Reread edit: still good. Louisa does have a good style, or the jokes wouldn't be funny the second time around. And Joel Leslie is such a good narrator!

I liked it a lot. Fabian is really cute, and it fills me with joy that he found someone who gets him and his need to know. Plus the way Louisa weaves the science and research to the plot is brilliant

This series is just SO fun! I laughed so hard I got into a coughing fit at one point. Fabian, the absentminded dragon historian we know from previous books, was SO entertaining, both from his own POV and from Rhys's, a sorcerer/scientist. There was a bit of a mystery to solve but the main focus was on the building relationship, with lots of glimpses of other characters we know and love (can I just say how eagerly I'm awaiting Steffen's book?). This is definitely one I'll recommend!

Dr. Rhys Griffith is a scientist exploring the effects of sex in the species world. He has purity rings that keep track of this information. One of the subjects that signs up is a dragon named Fabian. However, Fabian was more interested in getting his hand on the ring and didn't pay much attention to the why he was receiving it.

4 years pass and the ring has not come off of Fabian's finger. His group of friends get worried about it and track back where the ring came from. This leads Fabian back to Rhys.

Rhys is a shy, nerdy scientist that struggles with relationships while Fabian is sort of a player who sleeps around and has never had a relationship. The two start a sexual relationship. They become close but Rhys worries that he will get his heartbroken by Fabian.

Overall an ok read. I did like Fabian and Rhys. Fabian is sort of oblivious to all that's going on around him. But dragon archives and Rhys hold his attention. The two of them together do figure out why the magic seems to be fading and the possible solution. That information doesn't come out until after 90%. I expect that to be further explored in the next book or so.

I love this series. Fabian is like an overzealous puppy. He is all about the shinny. So Rhys is researching how sex can impact the health of magic/power in different species. Rhys is a sorcerer. He meets Fabian when he is trying to recruit those in the community. Fabian, who has an attention span of said puppy, agrees as he is mesmerized by the ring that he is supposed to wear. He hoards rings so of course he is going to agree cause, yes it's so pretty. Fast forward several years and Fabian has forgotten all about the reason why he has the ring & why it can't come off. The reason being either he stops having sex for a period of time or tells Rhys that he is done with the experiment & Rhys takes it off. Turns out, there is something going on with the magic in the community and Rhys just might be able to figure it out with the data he has been collected. While they are trying to figure out what is going on, Rhys & Fabian start to draw closer. Rhys doesn't realize when their relationship changes to Fabian knowing that Rhys is his one and only. I really loved these two together. I can't wait for Steffen's book. I loved him, even though he is so very paranoid.

I received a copy of this book from Gay romance reviews and this is my honest opinion

Book 3 in the Here Be Dragons series gives us another fun experience in this world Louisa Masters has created. The resident man (or dragon?) whore of the house has finally met another person that holds his interest for longer than a night, well met again you could say. Fabian met Rhys 4 years before, but was too distracted oogling the rings Rhys had on display for sale to bother oogling Rhys himself. A mistake he does not make the second time they meet.

I loved how confident Fabian was in himself. He wasn't cocky per say, just sure of who he was as a person. He said the things that came into his head without running them through that filter many of us have. He always went after what he wanted and what he wanted was Rhys.

Rhys was much more reserved and opposite from Fabian when it came to his self esteem. He would overthink things a lot, which I think was a major reason for his and Fabian's miscommunication issues. He avoided talking about things like the status of their relationship due to fear, while Fabian just assumed Rhys knew he was his. Rhys wasn't dumb though. He was a sorcerer who held a doctorate. It didn't take him too long to realize how different dragons were to other species in the community.

"I've been around the dragons for half a year now. I know their ways. Privacy is an illusion."

The plot of this one was actually more in the background than usual. I felt like the romance took center stage and I really liked that about this book. I'm also really curious about Steffens hoard since no one seems privy to what it contains. That paranoid head of security is really growing on me and I'm so happy to hear he's going to get his own book. I have no idea what type of man could get that dragon to let his guard down, but I can't wait to find out!

Ring It In

Dragons may be made of pure energy but these books are pure fun, and I am a most enthusiastic lover of all things Here Be Dragons and the interconnected Hidden Species world. I adore Fabian and his absentminded moments—and he has a bunch of them that have me fondly shaking my head, two words: nether region. “This whole love thing is better than any drug I ever took, even those weird swamp weeds when I was still a fledgling that made me hiccup tiny flowers for two days.” His self-confidence and his whole personality makes for one sexy package that is also super sweet. Plus, I love the way he woos Rhys—sigh, I wish I could find my own dragon. I gotta say though Dr. Rhys is smoking and he’s the type of nerd I can get behind, or in front of, or beside—well, you get the idea, and so does Fabian. I love how smart he is and paired with how awkwardly adorable he can be, I want to claim him and add him to my hoard. Aside from the dragon shenanigans and who doesn’t love those, I’m also enjoying all the events that are afoot, not sure what will happen next, but I can’t wait to find out. I do know that this phenomenal series has my ringing endorsement.

Oh, I can't even say how much I love these dragons. I thought that the hellhounds were the best creatures in this world, but now I'm sure it's both the dragons and the hellhounds.

Fabian is a dragon. He's a historian, so his head is always in the past. He's also really free with his affections, as are all the dragons. This is good for Rhys, who is running an experiment about sex in the Community.

Rhys gives Fabian a ring to track him in his study, but all Fabian could see was the ring, so when he tries to take the ring off years later, he has no clue what's going on, which brings the two back together.

Fabian really is a hoot. And Rhys is so patient with him.

I'm enjoying the series. Its one of those ones that just feels comfortable and nostalgic with the CSG popping up. Fabian was adorable, although I did feel sorry for Steffen with that hug. Rhys felt a bit soft, putting them as one of those similar sweet pairings. The way Fabian was fixated on his ring was cute. Unsure about the best friend talk. Mainly focused on the experiment and the mystery. Looking forward to what comes next.

Fabian can be scatterbrained and zones out, but he is also caring, dedicated to archiving dragon history, and falling for Rhys.

There is no other way to describe it. This book is fun to read. The scene where Fabian plans a romantic date and goes shopping is not to be missed. Treat yourself to smile and give this one a read.

I received an e-ARC of The Dragon Experiment by Louisa Masters from Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest review. If you want to get the most out of your experience of reading this book, I recommend you read her Hidden Species series (4 books) and the first two Here Be Dragons books. She’s built a really interesting world and previous characters make cameos and there are references that will mean more if you’ve read all the books. Plus they’re all good and fun and full of sexy good times.

Anyway, back to this book. Rhys and Fabian meet when Rhys is recruiting participants in his sex study — does sex enhance health and magical ability? He measures biometrics through an ensorcelled ring and all Fabian knows is that he needs that ring for his hoard so he agrees to whatever he has to in order to get it. Four years later, and Fabian has provided a LOT of data and he and Rhys cross paths again. They start a friends with benefits situation and Rhys gets feelings fast. But what about Fabian?

Fabian is an overly confident very smart dum dum who is also the sweetest horniest baby who loses himself in archival research often. He’s utterly clueless. He doesn’t spend much time on introspection. He’s the kind of character I normally wouldn’t like, but he’s just so sweet natured and completely clueless that I can’t help but root for him to figure his shit out and tell Rhys how he feels. (Also, I have to say the cover model looks absolutely perfect. That’s just how I pictured him.) There’s a side plot about the magic that is interesting and really forms the biggest drama/conflict in the story.

I give this four stars. It’s the kind of story I love - nice people having adventures and sexy times. I am really enjoying this series and I hope we get Steffen’s story next. That uptight little bb needs a person/demon/shifter/vampire/dragon/etc.

That's right! This was an issue listed after the dragons moved in. I had forgotten. Until the dragon hoard was found. And the intermingling of the species. But I was more interested in the relationship building. What a simple solution to an issue started by humans over jealousy. Why else attack other communities. Than for being jealous.

Probably angry humans still can't use magic to fly.

I'll admit to being a little worried about Fabian's book but this just worked for me.
The initial confusion around the ring, him meeting Rhys again and the outcome of that - funny and entertaining.
Lighter in plot than some of the others but absolutely adorable. I actually think that Fabian is my favourite dragon now.
Due to Fabian's promiscuity, I expected more steam but what I got fit the characters well and didn't make Fabian into some sort of characture. He and Rhys fit really well together.

Okay, this was just so ridiculous and so much fun. Our sweet little f*ckboy dragon, Fabian, is just so clueless. He's so honest, even when it isn't necessary. The dynamic between him and the nerdy sorcerer scientist, Rhys, was priceless. There's banter and sass, and of course, plenty of shenanigans with the rest of the Here Be Dragons herd. There is a little miscommunication, but it didn't bother or upset me like it usually does. It was actually pretty funny and sweet, and it was resolved without any drama. All in all, it's a fun and enjoyable experience that's definitely easy for the brain. I love that.

This is another book about CSG members, residents of Here Be Dragons and their friends. Louisa Maters created a truly interesting world full of great charactes.
The book is quick and fun to read, but honestly I was hoping for more "action" and drama etc. Unfortunately (for me) 90% of the book is dedicated to Rhys and Fabian "relationship" which mostly consists of them having sex or Fabian thinking about it. I am sorry to say that I didn't really like their story - Fabian got on my nerves from the very beginning to the end of the book. He was forgetful, distracted, and completely detached from reality. He was zoning out ALL THE TIME.

In this series we learn that the whole paranormal community faces the biggest and most terrifying danger maybe ever and no one seems to be particularly concerned about it. The serious conversation takes place in the last chapter!!!

It is an ok read, something to kill Your time with.
I am disappointed through, I loved "Hidden Species" series with its complexity and wonderful characters.

I really love all the dragons as they adapt to earth. Sweet, endearing and well meaning despite their OTT energy. Who knew your s3x life could help save the future of the Community?! Fabian certainly didn’t after signing up for a study without bothering to pay attention to the document he signed. Fast forward 4 years later and he is now asking questions about the ring that is spelled on his hand which is how Fabian and Rhys’ paths cross again. Rhys takes himself and his research super seriously and Fabian, while also taking his work very seriously is a lighthearted fun loving dragon. They were the perfect match for each other. The human posse killed me dead. Such a fun and funny scene! I loved seeing more of our fave characters including my beloved Steffan and am interested in seeing more about the results of Rhys’ study playing out. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Super happy to have a book in this series that I quite like. On the surface, Fabian and Rhys are complete opposites. Rhys is awkward and reserved, whereas Fabian is as free-spirited as can be, a trait most dragons share. But on a deeper level, they’re very similar. They both revere information and knowledge, and they understand what it feels like to get completely lost in one’s research. They also encourage each other to be better.

I loved the dynamic between the two. I liked how both their different and similarities complement each other so well. I also liked the pace of the romance for the most part.

The secondary plot—Rhys’s study and its importance to the Community—was a mixed bag. I liked that it existed because I firmly maintain that Masters’ books are better when they have a plotline outside the romance. But I didn’t love the plotline itself. First, I felt like it was made up just for this book because the Community slowly losing their magic has never been mentioned before (and this is the seventh book in this world). But I also think Rhys’s study, while helpful in seeing the extent of the loss, isn’t as crucial as the synopsis made it out to be, since it does nothing to solve the problem. Also, Rhys didn’t have a proper control group and that bothered the hell out of me.

Overall though, I enjoyed this book. I liked both Rhys and Fabian (I was kinda surprised to like the latter), and I thought there was a good balance between the romantic and non-romantic storylines.

This series just gets better with each book!

Oh Fabian, how I love him. His curiosity in all things, his hyper focus that makes him zone out, his good easy going nature, his bluntness, his unique logical mind and his love for cuddling. Also how he is perfect for Rhys who can be socially awkward, shy, nerdy and all science-y but is such a romantic at heart.

Circumstances have these two wonderful characters crossing paths and it’s the catalyst for a romance that is beautifully intertwined with a scientific conundrum and their thirst for knowledge and answers. Answers that impact the future of all the community species. It’s also great fun watching the previously ‘one night only’ Fabian lean into and embrace an actual romantic relationship. One that includes plenty of sizzling chemistry with steamy times and tender sweet moments to match.

This is a very engaging and enjoyable read with minimal angst and lots of laugh out loud moments. The plot flows along perfectly and had me hooked from the very first page and it was great catching up with the characters from previous books in this and the Hidden Species series who all had their roles to play. Highly recommended!

Like all the other books in this series, The Dragon Experiment was hilarious and utterly adorable. Fabian was a sometimes clueless sweetheart, and Rhys was the sexy nerd who swept him off his feet. The Here Be Dragons family was as entertaining as ever, and I'm excitedly looking forward to Steffen's story.
