As usual, an underwhelming issue in this latest run of X-Men.
I'm not an artist, so maybe I can't articulate my problem well. But something about this art seems off. It's like the artist refuses to ever frame any picture of a person directly. Hardly anyone is ever centered, or directly facing the direction you would expect. People's faces are always partially obscured or shadowed. The color palate is darker and grungier than it should be, somehow. As if there is a veneer of mud caking everything. Not just this issue. Every issue.
As far as the story goes, that was just as underwhelming. We were given a mystery about who is "Captain Krakoa," except even that felt like it was introduced awkwardly, with poor pacing. The comic resisted having anyone refer to him by name for a couple pages, until it was mentioned in the middle of a conversation with the Quiet Council.
A lot of the action focused upon Sunfire and that rich Chinese human guy who was so upset that the mutants colonized Mars before him. I do like Sunfire okay, but I'm not sure how many of you were clamoring for an Elon Musk-style human villain. If you're into him, rejoice, because he has a moment here.
I like the brief cameo by Daredevil, whom rarely interacts with the X-Men much.
I need a reboot of the X-Men title, stat. We need better coloration, more engaging stories that focus upon relatable human interests, etc.
Well, that was a quickly solved mystery, but the end left me curious and confused, awesome cliffhanger, and that battle on Arakko had so many vibes from House of X, which is exactly what I wanted, more of that please.
These filler issues are boring. Not happy with the lack of character development in Duggan’s run so far. It feels like not a lot has happened for most of the run.
A worthy mystery, but not fully developed yet. I suspect some behind the scenes telepathic tomfoolery. Pepe Larraz is one of my favorite artists doing super hero comics today, and he doesn't disappoint here. Thrill to his Spider-Man in a brief appearance. His Sunfire is a revelation, too, as are the Arakki mutants. X-Men continues without Hickman soon, but it does so the better for his influence.
I don't really give a shit about Orchis and this stuff with Phobos (though it is kinda cool) but I am looking forward to what's gonna happen with Cyclops and Urich and this Captain Krakoa business.
I didn't all day trying to figure out what I missed. And then noticed on my second time through I didn't, the what happened part is being told in the next issue. Hate that. But I think I've got all caught up with the rest of the books, had to look up publication order since they shipped the coming soon sections on the last releases of the rest.
Honestly the “X-Men” weren’t needed. They should have all stayed on Krakoa and lived there lives. Mutants carved out their new nation. Yet still sought approval. It was time to claim it as they did at the start of Krakoa and keep it. Then the whole point of Captain Krakoa wouldn’t have been needed.
