With the mage test over, it’s time to travel again. Our leads are once more on the move, seeing the world and seeing how Himmel’s actions shaped it all those decades ago. Oh, and the needle finally moves on Stark and Fern’s relationship.

The first chapter sees the end of Serie, for now, which I’m not upset about since I found her pretty annoying. But more importantly, it shows who amongst the group passes their mage exams and there end up being some clever surprises in store with some last minute revelations that I really enjoyed.

The antagonistic Wirbel gets some great backstory too, providing one of my favourite flashbacks yet as he talks about what an impact Himmel and the heroes made on his village and it’s not quite what you’d expect.

This is part of why I love Frieren so much, it examines the legacy of a hero from all sorts of angles. And, yes, even if these heroes don’t have that aspect of darkness to them, there’s plenty that makes them interesting.

There’s a ton of good stuff here, just tons of it. Frieren has a wonderful fight with a first-class mage that shows how there’s more than one way to win a conflict. The spell Fern requests for her achievements is practical and ridiculous. Actually, there are lots of goofy magic spells in this series that make it seem less fantastical and far more practical.

And while she wouldn’t necessarily admit it, Frieren is applying lots of things she learned from Himmel to her own life. Beyond the immortalization of their heroic legacy, Frieren is essentially the means by which Himmel continues to live in the modern day.

Not to say there weren’t other heroes then either, which turns out to be a lovely little backstory about fate and attempts to subvert it. This story loves to hint at a rich history we’ll never know about and I love that - I was dying to hear about the ‘conquest of the Thousand-Mirror Tower’.

Then comes a very chaste hot springs visit, once they find the darn thing, of course. And Stark and Fern finally go on that date that we’ve been expecting, but Stern goes to Frieren for help, which is… a choice… and yields some surprising results.

It’s all just kind of great. Even if the driving plot is back to the wandering instead of the laser focus of the mage trials, it’s really nice to see Stark get some page time. The three of them have a really good camaraderie too.

While it may not wow me, the story is still luminous in how it handles the quiet moments and I truly love that the most about it. Okay, fine, Frieren falls asleep with her butt hanging out of a pile this time and that didn’t hurt my amusement level.

And I guess that’s the thing - for some people this is going to be a slow, aimless book about wandering around places. And they’re not wrong, but there’s so much to unpack every time they go somewhere that I always get caught up in it. It’s a different approach to the hero’s journey and I greatly enjoy how it presents it.

5 stars - still my favourite manga and no change there. This is a historical travelogue with a lot of heart and questionable braiding technique and I was not disappointed with this volume.

The beautiful connection and learnings between Frieren and Himmel is really something! It is so precious, their memories and the funny moments. 🥺

Then, there is the most-awaited date between the two teenagers, who are very opposite to each other but lovely to see together. 😙

I wish volume 8 was already out so I could resume the series right away.

After a couple of volumes of rigorous magical exams, the characters get a cooling off period as they wander slowly ever northward to their distant destination. The low-key adventures become secondary to a bit of a romantic break-through late in the book.

The number of side characters who go through the book without actually being named really points to the need for a cast list at the start of the book.

Still, it's a cute and funny visit with characters I love.

STARK AND FERN DEVELOPMENT. I REPEAT: STARK AND FERN DEVELOPMENT!!!

Fern turns down an apprenticeship request, and she shows how she’s truly Frieren’s apprentice. We see Stark is with the party for reasons. Love Frieren’s outlook on goodbyes. And some more quaint scenes as expected :)

3.5⭐️
It's one of the weaker instalments of the series so far, imo. It feels like a bit of a filler to move on to the next stage, but it's still lovely because it's Frieren.

I honestly…do not get the hype around this manga. I caught up with all the chapters out so far and it’s just a slight variation of a classic adventure shonen. I’m not sure I will follow it weekly anyway. The characters and the story are quite formulaic and I mostly found the depth of the characters (or lack thereof) disappointing. I liked the premise a lot, but its development is so lacking right now.

The journey continues with the final portion of the first-class mage exam. The examiner, Serie, seemed petty and unlikable. Then the story took an unexpected turn as Stark and Fern decide to go on a date. Even into its seventh volume the story is still enjoyable. I will continue on this journey.

WHOOO! We are back baby! Travelling time! Fun moments while travelling! Backstories! Flashbacks! New towns! New stories! And a demon stealing a sword! I had so much fun again with this series. Whoo!
Also Fern x Stark, yesss~ Now if Fern is a bit less deredere. XD But I am glad that these two got a bit closer~ And love how they both asked Frieren (yes her) for help.

Anyone who is very invested in Stark and Vern’s relationship will be excited about this volume. Me, I’m less invested haha. But still fun is to be had here. The aftermath of the mage trials, a hot springs is found, and caverns explored. Plus our emotionally stunted heroes get to say a few profound things to each other.

Dear future me:

-Frieren- Ya veo. entonces escapemos juntos. »

*El recuerdo de Frieren de las palabras de Himmel justo después de esa escena también es hermoso, pero ya me dio locha escribirlo
jejeje

Fern standing her ground against Serie and insisting Frieren is her mistress, like yass defend your mother! Also, the spell Fern picked for becoming a first class mage😂

"Treasure the people you meet. Final farewells aren't always brought about by death."

"But we might cross paths again as long as we keep on our journey. A tearful farewell wouldn't suit us. If I didn't, it'd be embarrassing when we meet again."

HIMMEL!!!! 😭🥰

I loved the wrap up of the mage exam arc, it was so sweet!

The party running away together from the monster- yet again there's a cute flashback to the original party of heroes doing the same. I loved the two panels side by side (and seeing poor Frieren being hauled up like a sack of potatoes by Himmel and Stark).

I was surprised to see the tiny glimpse of Wirbel and his party. I loved the heartwarming moment between Stark and Fern, I love it when they're open and honest with each other, and when Stark proves time and time again that he's braver then the thinks.

The Hero of the South?! It was fated all along! "He will change your life." 😱

Loved the little quest when they're getting the sword back.

"Every pointless adventure I had with them is a precious memory."

Stark accidentally calling Frieren old again😂 And her threatening to throw a tantrum about it.

AND WE'RE FINALLY GETTING STARK X FERN CONTENT! A DATE?!

✨Genre: Fantasy/Adventure ✨

📘 Synopsis: Caught up on the anime but can’t wait for Season 2? Look no further than volume 7!

📖 Review: This volume covers the tail end of the First Class Mage Arc. Our story continues with Fern passing the exam and Frieren being banned from taking it for the next thousand years. With one of the party members passing the test their journey through the Northern Lands can continue! If you are a fan of Stark you’re in luck! His character gets some solid development in this volume and it made him even more of a likeable character in my eyes.

3 Reasons We Recommend It:

✅ The bond between the party members continue to strengthens.

✅ Stark is loyal to Frieren and was encouraged to join by Fern!

✅ The Hero of the South, I loved getting more insight into the history of the land and it really added some depth to the overall lore.

Any Criticisms?

🤨 The previous volume was full of action, so its only natural we have to scale back and focus on the development of other areas this time. That’s a small nitpick, but this is afiller volume that still had substance.

📚 4.0⭐. Post Anime Content!

On the road again! Back to slice-of-life and wholesomeness. We continue to see how Himmel and his values resonate well beyond his death, as we’ll get some development from Fern and Stark, romantically. Though, interestingly, no one knows if they’re actually compatible, so it’s like a mini adventure in that way.

Normally, there would be some fan service or googly eyes or some kind of heat between characters to get to this point, but because both haven’t really been socialized, it’s mostly just an experiment, which ends up being wholesome, because this is Frieren. I really like the slow burn development.

What I thought didn’t quite work for me was the hero of the south, who was the flashback portion of the book, but kind of felt like it took agency away from Frieren deciding to go on the trip. It felt just right, her being persuaded. The fact that it was portended was disappointing to me. Why not leave it at the summoning of flowers for a young Himmel and her being reminded of her master to undertake the journey, using her instincts? It bugged me, a little.

This just brings me joy. Simple joy. There isn't a great depth to this show in characters and their growth. There isn't over the top battling. It's just a peace-flooded adventure with disintegrating time as the villain. I'm excited to be able to read ahead.

Highly recommend playing the soundtrack while reading.

Peak art.
Panels broad enough that you never need to squint.
Legebile.
Adventuring fun.

I don't need to give a regular rating for Frieren. if you know you know.

Verdict: 3 head pats and a pastry. <3

Finally the trial is over and they're travelling again. The dynamic between Fern and Stark shifts as I expected it. Wouldn't have needed that but eh whatever, I still love the laid back narrative and many quiet moments.

The end of the mage competition and some sweet/bittersweet moments for our party. The last story is a lovely way to end the collection. I do love these characters. Can't wait for the next book.
