Enjoyed this read, it was nice to see what had changed on Arcosi in the ten + years since Dragon Daughter. I do wish we saw more of Milla and Iggie I did miss them. This book focused on Joe, the younger brother of Tarya and Isak, he does something bad and then goes underground where he finds a miracle. But in finding this he discovers something else is coming and will they be able to save everyone?
Loved this book just like the first one, Ren fills my heart with a needed pleasure as i see another, slightly smaller but still big, dragon appear! I love Ren and i love how they added the young girl whos old dragon had passed, leaving her bondless, yet still managed so rebond! Hope this brings as much joy to others as it did me!

I really enjoyed this second book in the series, which is a fantasy adventure with lots of excitement. Anyone could enjoy this from age 8 and above. The story tells of a boy who lost his temper out of disappointment and causes havoc and almost kills a dragon. In the ensuing chaos he flees the scene and can't face his family again, so he hides out in caves. A girl finds him and nurses his wounds and his grief and helps him to heal. Then they discover dragon eggs and a mystery and also a plot to take over the island.
Kids ages 8-14 will love escaping into this Dragon-centric adventure!
In this second book of the series (after Book 1, Dragon Daughter), readers will get another chance to visit to the enchanting fantasy world of Arcosi.
In a society that feels loosely styled after medieval times, Jowan expects to bond with a dragon egg because his brother and sister were two of Arcosi's original dragon riders. When he doesn’t, a storm of shock and anger drives him to live in hiding, where he meets a mysterious ally. Together, they find something unlike anything the island has seen. He’ll need his new ally and their jaw-dropping find to face the escalating tension and conflict on the island.
The writing is gorgeous, characters are deep and nuanced, and the story works up to SUCH an explosive finish. Emotions are handled in such a human, realistic way that often glossed over in kid's movies/TV. Everything in this book is so rich and real, and the important themes tucked into the subtext are not just hollow morals, they are lessons that readers can really apply to our times and circumstances.
The protagonist is a boy, and his experience as a pre-teen is so vivid and real. If you’re looking for a chapter book for a son/grandson I think the main character will really resonate. It will help if you’ve read the first in the series, but it can also standalone, as the events take place many years after Dragon Daughter.
I loved Tamora Pierce novels when I was in middle school, for the total escapism into a world that is both fantasy and feels historical, and I think this series will give those feelings to the kids of today. Also great for fans of Percy Jackson, Zelda video games, Harry Potter, and anyone who thinks huge, fire-breathing, flying dragons are cool!!
Just like Legends of the Sky (also called Dragon Daughter?) it left me with a warm glow from the sheer marvel of the descriptions of bonding with dragons, and the social, political, ethical, and emotional questions were explored with tact and dignity. It's beautiful. Also the author has matured in her writing style (or else hired a better editor) because unlike the previous book, I didn't find any major writing mistakes in this book! It was great also the way through.
I highly recommend it! However, unlike the previous book, which would probably be enjoyed a lot by a 9-year-old or maybe even younger, this book has some heavier themes (e.g. suicidal ideation, etc.) and might be more appropriate for a slightly older audience (maybe 12+ or so).
What's up with all these authors? Do they really believe that immoral choices are good as part of destiny? In this book it is stated multiple times that, if Joe had not done the horrible thing he did, then he would not have found Ren. And that's just one of the many problems with this book. Another terrible problem is the message that it is okay to direct one's rage and craving for revenge to fuel actions that are ostensibly good. It's also sad that these problems have been completely unnoticed by other reviewers.
I was really curious to see how the story moves on from where it ended in book 1. We find ourselves quite a few years later when the story in this second book takes place. I loved parts of it and the narration was well done. With other parts I struggled and overall, I was disappointed that the author didn't really dare to fly the kids & their dragons free.
A fantastic book for 8+ year olds featuring dragons and children who ride them. This is a thrilling adventure with dragons and secrets and unexpected friendship. Having not read any of this series before, I'm glad it can be read as a standalone.
Hmmm...mixed review. The story is great - great character development, great ending. My only frustration is that the author made a point of including a gay relationship for no purpose other than just to put it in there. (Isak and Luca). Most younger kids probably won’t even notice, so why???
Great second book in this series. It is set a while after the first in the series and introduces lots of new young characters, with mentions of the old ones, who are adults now. Plenty of adventure and danger, happiness and sadness in a fast moving story, and of course, dragons. Bring on another!
A well written, gripping fantasy book with amazing settings and great characters. It's like you are immersing yourself in another world.A book that explores the values of friendship, and the battle between good and bad.
I loved this book, it had an interesting plot line about a young boy and how far he would go to achieve his dreams, how much he honoured loyalty and how much he loved his family. But how far was he going to go for a dragon. That was what I enjoyed most.
Wow!! I got this book with the intention to read it to my 9 year old and asking her what she thought of it and to fill a book challenge prompt. But wow I loved it so much that when she fell asleep after a chapter I read on. I couldn't get enough of it. Pageturner alert. This book is not just brilliant for children, YA and adults. It was so well wrote and had you on the edge of seat. So much action and adventure you just get carried away and totally engrossed you will forget the time. I will be reading the authors other books. In fact I can't wait. This book has to be made into a film its that good. Thank you for writing such an amazing story. So much praise to the author.
