What could be better than Christmas in the Cayman Islands?
When the British Royal Family donates a beautiful bronze statue to the people of the Cayman Islands, everyone is excited to see the Christmas Eve presentation go off with a bang - especially one man with a grudge.
Dive boat operators and friends, AJ Bailey, Nora Sommer, Boone Fischer, and Emily Durand, planned on spending the holiday together, but as the Royal visit nears, they’re thrown into the middle of the festivities - and a devious plot to assassinate his Royal Highness.
Angels of the Deep brings together well-loved characters from Nick Sullivan’s and Nicholas Harvey’s best-selling series for a holiday adventure that’ll keep you on the edge-of-your-seat, with more than a few chuckles along the way.
A USA Today bestselling author, Nicholas Harvey's life has been anything but ordinary. Race car driver, motorsports professional, adventure traveller, divemaster, and since 2020, a full-time novelist. Raised in England, Nick has dual UK and US citizenship and now lives nomadically wherever he and his amazing wife, Cheryl, choose to land for a few months. He is the author of the Nora Sommer Suspense, Kat Cromwell Mystery, and AJ Bailey Adventure series, as well as multiple collaborations.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: I'm a huge fan of Nick Sullivan's THE DEEP series, and when I saw he'd teamed up with fellow Tropical Authors author Nicholas Harvey for a holiday novella, I couldn't resist. (ESPECIALLY because Nick Sullivan narrates the audiobook.)
As always, it was so much fun to *dive* back into the world of Boone & Em, this time for a Cayman Island adventure. And it was a great introduction to Harvey's characters, AJ Bailey & Nora Sommer.
At just 3 1/2 hours in length, it was easy to listen while wrapping presents and preparing for our after-Christmas Christmas celebration with family. It definitely kept me in the holiday spirit and had me laughing and wondering exactly how the mystery would unfold. If you've read any of Sullivan's books, you can be assured it's an action-packed finish.
I listened at regular speed, and Nick Sullivan nails the narration of all the characters. Sometimes his "AJ" voice would slide into his "Emily" voice, but other than that, each character had a distinct voice, and Sullivan depicts quite a few accents since characters are from all over the world.
I've got one more book, DEEP HEX, to read in Sullivan's THE DEEP series, and while I wait for him to write more books, I may give Nicholas Harvey's NORA SOMMER CARIBBEAN SUSPENSE series a try. The kick-ass Norwegian's part in ANGELS OF THE DEEP really piqued my interest in reading more of her adventures. And if I get hooked, you won't see me for a while. There are eight books in that series!
This was the perfect bite-sized book for me, especially since it was holiday-themed but doesn't need to be read during the holidays. I'm familiar with Boone & Emily from Nick Sullivan's The Deep series - but I have not read anything from Nicholas Harvey before this. That's going to change now since I couldn't tell which parts were written by Sullivan and which were Harvey - telling me I'm going to like them both.
A book with two different sets of main characters could have been a mess, but that's not the case with Angels of the Deep. Harvey and Sullivan did a great job keeping them separated and allowed each of them to shine in their own way.
I won't go into too much detail about the plot but if you've liked the other tropical thrillers by either of the authors I think you'll enjoy this one. It was fast-paced but still gave enough back story to really feel for each character. But I will talk quickly about the puns or the Christmas-themed chapters. Every time something would come up (the way Emily insisted on the Santa hat for example) made me smile or laugh. Perfect addition to a great tropical thriller.
Overall, a wonderful novella that I absolutely flew through in one sitting. Sullivan was a narrator first and it really shows in the way he performs each book. Angels of the Deep was a well-written book, but it really shines under his narration.
It was an absolute delight to read/listen to this book. I am very familiar with Nick Sullivan's narration and his DEEP series, but I have not read any of Nicholas Harvey's work. As far as my memory serves me. My familiarity with Boone and Emily, mixed with AJ Bailey and a different cast of characters I have not met before now was brilliant. I am certain I will be looking into Nicholas Harvey's books now.
I have to share my favorite line from this book. This is not a spoiler, but Emily says "Do reindeer poop in the snow?" and I just about died laughing.
As for the audio, Nick Sullivan was as amazing as ever. His interpretation of accents and the use of different voices to match each character. I knew exactly who was speaking. The recording was flawless and very well done.
I do wish I had started this book during the Holiday season since the book's setting is Christmas. However, this is officially the first book I finished in 2022!
Disclaimer: This review is a compilation of my honest opinions. I did receive a complimentary copy of the audiobook from Nick Sullivan, but this does not influence nor sway my review in any way.
I always love a good tropical story from Nick Sullivan. Nicholas Harvey is new to me, but his characters and writing style seem to flow perfectly with Sullivan's characters and story. I think I may need to check out some more of his work, especially if Sullivan is narrating! Nick Sullivan is one of only a few authors I enjoy narrating as well. This book isn't one to just enjoy around Christmas. It takes place during Christmas but it's a tropical action / adventure book that can be enjoyed anytime!
Set in the Cayman Islands, AJ Bailey and two professional dive-leader friends are hired to help with the installation of the eponymous sculpture, that should be straightforward. But as the poet once said, 'the best laid plans of mice and men...' - and so it proves. Thrills and adventures aplenty, both ashore and under the sea, with excellent, well-developed characters and scenarios, make Angels of the Deep, by Nicholas Harvey and Nick Sullivan, an unputdownable action-thriller that you simply must not miss...grab your copy today!
A royal visit to dedicate an underwater sculpture goes very bad
When explosives are stolen on the island it puts every law enforcement official and top political leader on guard and in high speculation over potential uses. Who could have guessed the devious plans of a man whose outdoor toilet business had hit rock bottom. Excellent characters, plenty of action, and well worth the time.
Cayman at Christmas…always a blast!!! Wink, wink! A great Christmastime novella with beloved characters, AJ & Jackson, Reg & Pearl, Nora, and Emily & Boone. With special guest stars Simon Morris and Princess Eugenie! Awesome job Nick & Nick!
Harvey and Sullivan rocked the seas with this one. What a great Christmas story. I enjoyed the combination of characters and the story line. Thank you for sharing.
What a story very quick read but a really great story especially at Christmas time statues that are bombs and royalty comes to the islands once again Nora and an save the day with help from all and even Santa shows up ciao from Bobbie and George from ours vida land....
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Nice little Christmas diversion with all your favorite characters from two great authors. Like these novellas getting these characters together is a real blimey blast!
It was enjoyable reading a tropical Christmas story with AJ and friends. As I finished the outside temperature here was 22 degrees F but my imagination put me in the more pleasant surroundings of the Caribbean Sea. And as always with Nick Harvey’s books I learned something new.
