Triskelion #3

Making the Rules

Rate this book
The rules are changing as Saul and Troy and their good friends and lovers Geoff and Carter are figuring out how they all fit together in their evolving relationship. Subs Geoff and Troy test the limits of both their friendship and their Doms’ patience as they discover new things about each other, and Doms Carter and Saul wrestle with how to be the men their subs need and still become lovers in their own right.

As they all push boundaries trying to decide how to move forward, Troy begins to feel like he’s constantly one step behind and he’s having trouble keeping up with his lovers. He's unsure how much more change he can accept, so when a tragedy strikes, it threatens to completely overwhelm him.

Geoff, Carter, and Saul all come together to help Troy cope, and to figure out what he needs. But they all soon discover they have to understand what they each desire more deeply, and that making the rules is all about that balance.

Note: This is the third book in the Triskelion Series, which should be read in order.

Jodi Payne

JODI spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. She, therefore, is overdramatic, takes herself way too seriously, and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.

For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila however you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music. Jodi lives near New York City with her beautiful wife, and together they are mothers of dragons (cleverly disguised as children) and slaves to an enormous polydactyl cat.

I felt so much for Troy in this one. A tragedy strikes Troy right to his very core and the memories from his past ...are gone forever. He feels more lost and alone than he's ever felt before in spite of the care from his three guys. Saul, Geoff and Carter are there for him as always, but you feel like even though the men that he loves and loves him will always support him, it may not be enough this time. The four guys are still in the midst of building something brand new at the beginning of this story. Luckily, the power exchange relationships that all are involved in, means they understand the importance of true, honest communication. That doesn’t mean everything is effortless, however, or that the communication is always easy. Troy’s high anxiety is the "elephant in the room", the heart and soul of the problems that still face their dynamic, and that was true even before the tragedy had occurred. In a way, this trilogy functions as an extended book, making the dark moment that occurs early in this one the dark moment for the entire trilogy. This makes the rebuild afterward much more satisfying as a whole. A relationship that involves four people, even between two primary couples, means six very distinct connections that require care and attention. I loved the brand-new experiences that bond Carter and Saul together as much as I enjoyed the resolution of a lingering issue between Troy and Carter. From the very beginning, Jodi Payne and B.A. Tortuga let us know that nothing about this relationship will be a traditional romance, and this holds true for the conclusion. These writers have excelled at creating scenes and characters that are intimate and sexy, and believable. I’m more than satisfied with the conclusion to the story but of course, wish there was more. I bought the three books and I reread a lot, so I know that I’ll return to these amazing characters for more than one re-read in the future.

I’m so spoiled by authors that release books close together that waiting a year for the final installment of this trilogy was brutal—but absolutely worth the wait (and luckily, I had plenty of other books by this amazing author duo to read in the meantime). This book fulfills many of the expectations set up by the previous books in the series and continues along the same arc promised by the complete surprise set up at the end of book 1. I’d have been more than happy with a trilogy that followed Troy and Saul as a couple. The addition of Carter and Geoff to the relationship, along with scenes from their point of view, made for a compelling read to find out how this unique, intricate dynamic would achieve their happily ever after.

The four men are still in the midst of building something brand new at the beginning of this story. Luckily, the power exchange relationships all are involved in means they understand the importance of communication. That doesn’t mean everything is effortless, however, or that communication is always easy. Troy’s anxiety is the linchpin of the problems that still face their dynamic, and that’s before tragedy strikes. In a way, this trilogy functions as an extended book, making the dark moment that occurs early in this one the dark moment for the entire narrative. This makes the rebuild afterward much more satisfying as a whole. I loved the brand-new experiences that bond Carter and Saul together as much as I enjoyed the resolution of a lingering issue between Troy and Carter.

From the very beginning, Payne and Tortuga telegraph that nothing about this arc will be a traditional romance, and this holds true for the conclusion to the trilogy. These writers excel at crafting scenes that are intimate and sexy even when they don’t include explicit sex. I’m more than satisfied with the conclusion to the story I’ve been waiting so long for, even while I know that I’ll return to these amazing characters for more than one re-read in the future.

We finally have the third and final book of this wonderful series. It's been an emotional journey for all four men involved, turning into something completely unexpected but what fits them perfectly, individually, as couples and as a foursome. It's takes a lot of adjusting for them, especially when a big event occurs, moving up their timeline faster than they were thinking. This is especially hard for Troy who suffers a bit blow and struggles to deal with the sudden changes and loss he experiences. He never wants to be a burden on the others but that causes him to keep things bottled up. Never a good thing when you're alone, let alone in a relationship with others who worry about you.
Communication is a huge part of any relationship but when there are four of you, it feels even more necessary but it felt slightly lacking in their group on occasion. My heart ached for Troy and what he goes through. It's clear everyone wants to help but is unsure how. Saul is an amazing dom for him, giving him a safe space and grounding him but they are still learning each other, and so it takes a little input from Carter to point him in the right direction once or twice. Carter and Geoff also have to adjust to the new normal of having two extra people in their home, something they wanted but not under those circumstances. Emotions are heightened and strained for a while but things slowly get worked out.
A great way to finish this trilogy. A lot of strong emotion from start to finish, not all positive but it all helps to build an amazing story that brings these four men, two couples who found something more together, their HEA that went beyond what they could have imagined.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

This is a powerful book which brings together all that has happened to the four men so far and it really gels their relationships into something that can work for all of them forever. There is a lot of focus in this book on Troy. He's gone through so much hurt in his life, he just wants to keep everyone happy, and he's not sure how to identify and vocalize this own needs. When a major challenge hits, it's an opportunity for everyone to rise in support and figure out new ways of coping. His young Dom, Saul, continues to study Troy and learn about how best to support him. Their friends and lovers, Dom Carter and sub Geoff, hope that they will commit to all living together, but if that happens, they will all have to learn how to work together with two Doms in the house and a submissive who likes to keep his things just so. What makes this book so special is that love is centered in everything they do and every step they take. It overrides ego, preferences, and bad days. The BDSM is a very prominent part of their relationships and it is always done in a way that is safe, sane, and consensual. It's the best kind of love between these four men, at its full expression.

First things first—this book relies on those that came before, so start at the beginning of the series, if you haven’t already! At this point in the larger narrative, Saul, Troy, Carter and Geoff are falling into place as people whose lives overlap in multiple interconnected ways— love, business, friendship and D/s dynamics are all intertwined. It’s full of potential and also just a bit of peril— they clearly fit together really well, but there’s lots of room for both individual and group dynamic growth. It’s sweet and hot and a bit emotional to see them progress, and fans of the series so far will find a lot to love and enjoy here. 4.5 stars

Making the Rules is the last book in the Triskelion series and I recommend reading the other two books first because the series builds on each other.
This book is also excellently written by both authors Jody Payne and B.A. Tortuga. I love storylines about BDSM relationships and this trilogy is really worth reading and I highly recommend it.
The four guys face the challenges of everyday life and have to come together there as well. There are difficulties every now and then and Saul, Carter, Geoff and Troy have to learn to be honest with themselves about their needs. There were some painful experiences, but in the end they have created an unbreakable bond of love and support.
Wow, what a great series!

lovely wrap up to series

I really enjoyed the story arc of these three books as four men find their way into a relationship with each other. It’s difficult enough writing about a relationship with two people in it but the complexity increases exponentially when you have four people but B.A. Tortuga and Jodi Payne have done a marvelous job with these guys. The guys are all so different and had previous relationships with each other as doms and subs or as friends which both aids and hurts their new quad relationship. This series needs to be read in order and each of these books are great reads but I think I like this book the best as it’s such a great wrap up to the story.

This is a perfect conclusion to the trilogy as the main theme reminds the characters and the readers that in order for relationships to succeed, those involved have to be honest with themselves about what they want and need as well as trying to meet the needs of others. You can't take care of everyone else if you've not let others care for you. Though this revelation is born from pain for Troy, Saul, Carter and Geoff it was lovely to watch them learn the lesson and create an unbreakable bond of love and support.

What a beautiful story about friends becoming family and being together. Saul, Troy, Cater and Geoff are figuring it out for their relationship when a fire takes everything from Troy and Saul. The way all of them came together and made everyone feel comfortable and loved was amazing to read and experience.

I did receive an Arc for a review.

The story of two D/s couples forming a foursome....
Saul, has bike shop and Troy, who is a chef, are already a couple, plus Geoff, with his INK Shop and Carter, who runs the diner, also in a committed relationship are all on board to form their foursome.

The Doms are struggling to make it work, to find the proper blend to meld into four. The sexy times are full of sizzle, BDSM, D/s, that are hot, heavy, passion-filled, yet soft and sweet at times. The devotion is true and steady.

When tragedy hits, the souls are shattered, but stay strong for each other.

Troy is affected the hardest with emotions that rock him. He needs his Master Saul, but hesitates to tell him what he really needs.

This is a well paced story of personal and group progress.

It's heartwarming and understanding, serious and tender, humorous, and thought-filled plus super sexy.

Every character is in the present, able and willing to help the others through hard times. The changes are huge and our men are all in.

My eyes went wide at the 93% epiphany, was like a warm blanket hugging them all.

The epilogue was marvelous.
ENJOY !

Please read these all in order. If you haven’t read the first two, stop and do that first. One thing I have loved about these series is the interaction between these four men. Originally it was Saul and Troy figured out their Dom/sub relationship and how they fit. Then it was the four of them dipping their toes into the possibility of two couples becoming a foursome. Now it is all about them all trying to find their balance between two doms and two subs while not losing track of anyone. Troy has the most work to do because he has so much trauma from all of the intervening years, maybe Carter too. He has been the only one dominating both Troy and Geoff for so long that he has trouble figuring out how Saul fits into the mix. And Saul fits perfectly if only they can all work towards ,along their own set of rules: the ones that are for all four men together. No one writes these kinds of characters as well as Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga together. My favorite book is still the first one, but the absolute togetherness at the end of this with their HEA is wonderful to see.

Saul, Troy, Carter and Geoff are settling into their new dynamic as doms, subs, lovers, co-owners and friends. The foursome is setting boundaries, leaning into their roles and finding their footing. Saul, Geoff and Carter seem to be so sure of themselves, but Troy moves at his own pace, something that truly bothers him. When circumstances force their relationship to move forward at warpspeed, it's either going to make them or break them. And the only way Troy will know for sure is by trusting the men who love him.

This book was a fantastic conclusion to the series! Sweet, touching and oh so sexy, it's a really well done ending that leaves everyone happy. Each of the characters has a lot of growth, the dynamics are very well fleshed out and the ending was super satisfying. Really hoping we revisit Boulder and the men that make up Saul, Troy, Carter and Geoff's found family.

Thanks to GRR for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Saul and Troy are working on the rules where Geoff and Carter are also their lovers. Each has their own challenges. Subs Troy and Geoff try their Doms’ patience as they learn new things. Doms Saul and Carter are also struggling to make sure they meet all the needs both subs have. Troy, though, feels like he is behind everyone else. When tragedy strikes, Troy feels overwhelmed and needs his lovers but also need some space to process. The rules are changing daily in Troy’s mind and he cannot cope.

Making the Rules is an excellent ending for these four loving and supportive men! They struggle to find a balance but each is committed to finding that balance. The love they have for each other is obvious as you watch their actions and their willingness to help each other cope. These guys are trying to find a way but getting there is not so easy. None of them are willing to give up. It is beautiful to watch.

4 Stars - This was my least favorite book of the series, although it did have some of my favorite scenes. Still not a fan of the writing style, but I did notice I didn't have quite as much trouble keeping track as I did with the previous two books.

I love these men. This book was all about them learning each other and how they fit together, especially when they add cohabitation to the mix. The dynamics between them seem to be constantly changing, but they finally figure out how to get what they all need. There is some serious spice, but there's also a lot of affection and care.

Overall, a great book with tons of heat and care. I absolutely loved this series and these men. There was so much complexity and depth but the story was still easy to follow. Definitely going on my favorites list!

I received and ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

I liked this story better than the other 2 because there was more edge, a push for the characters. In this last book, Troy's condo burns down, taking the last 20 years of his life. Of course Troy and Saul go to stay with Geoff and Carter, but Troy lived at that house before and was an outsider. So along with this new poly relationship, he is now dealing with the loss of his home and being pushed back into living with others. Lot's of old feelings and emotions that had to be worked out by all 4 men.

In this book I liked the relationship building between all of them. Cater and Saul will have a different type of relationship that Saul and Geoff, or Troy and Carter. I liked seeing how each person made space in their lives for the other uniquely. Then there was combining 2 D/s relationships into one house and relationship. Lots of dynamics moving and shifting to accomodate.

This entire series has been a rollercoaster. This book continued the ride. We had Troy and Saul together from book one who eventually hooked up with Carter and Geoff. Over the last book it felt forced and two couples together but still feeling separate. This was the book where they finally came together and you felt a bit less like two separate couples in a relationship together. I loved the steamy dynamic and finally drawing everyone together. Throughout this was enjoyable. This has a fair amount of angst and trying to come back from tragedy. I loved the healing and completion of 4. Though I hurt for characters it was still written very well. Perfect combo of the characters and super enjoyable. I wouldn't pick up the series at book 3 if you haven't read the first 2. But if you have this is excellent and well worth the read.

The Triskelion tattoo represents the significant element involved in the lives of these men. It encompasses the thoughts and feelings of all the MM characters from the first 2 stories; showing different POV's from each book: Saul & Troy (Book #1, Carter & Geoff (Book #2) and even Tobias & Noah from Deviations: Submission from that independent series "Deviations". Here in Book #3 the reader is taken on a journey of the ebbs and flows of Saul & Troy's lives; the good, the tragic, that brings to fruition the making of their 4-way family. This is a revelation of amazing and complex characters that is sure to give the reader a pleasure in reading. This is my voluntary review for the commentary book I received.

Firstly let me say I got this book of gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
Please make sure you read these books in order this is the third book in the series. The first book breaking the rules the second book making a mark and of course third book making the rules.
It’s quite hard when you go to leave a review on the last book because you just don’t wanna give too much away if you’re looking at this and I have not started the series. So all I’m going to say is this four individuals are amazing. Each in their own way they all bring something to this new family that they have created. They are there to help nurture and grow and that’s exactly what they’ve done. A really good series.

As all the other reviews are saying, you have two read the other books in the series first.

Jody Payne and B.A. Tortuga created with this series such great books for people who love BDSM romances taking place in the real life.

The four guys are settling as two duos in their quad. Now they have tho integrate it in the real life, what they found together as friends, Doms, boys, lovers, etc. As usual real life isn’t fair and they have to find their ground again. Follow Saul, Carter, Troy an Geoff to their own HEA.

I loved the total series, in my mind one of the best BDSM MM romances.

I had the luck to get an ARC to read.

Making The Rules, The Triskelion Series book three by Jodi Payne & B.A. Tortuga. If I didn’t already do it this whole series is going on my favorites list right now! Wow! It had been a while since I read the first two books. When I got the chance to read this I remembered how much I loved them and couldn’t wait to read this one! It did not disappoint! These characters are fantastic! The story throughout this series is wonderful. I just finished this book and I already want to reread the whole series again. Definitely a must read book in a must read series!

Blending together

This final book in the Triskelion series (the first two need to be read first for this one to make sense) saw the two couples finding their footing together and blending into one “family”. Overall, I liked how things played out though I thought the story was sometimes lost in all the bedroom antics and some of the individual relationships were almost perfunctory. I appreciated how they all felt balanced at the end and how everyone had their own place and importance in what they built.

This was the 3rd, and final, book in the Triskelion series and they need to be read in order. It was great seeing how the relationship between the 4 of them develops and grows into exactly what they each need. I've read a few mmmm books, although not many, and this was my first one where it was 2 previously separate D/s couples who came together. It was interesting to see the dynamic and how they had to figure things out.

Amazing!!! This was everything I wanted. My heart hurt for Troy. So many hard knocks in his life. Thank goodness he has his made family and friends. The way this ends is emotionally just what I imagined for them after reading the first two. I figured it would be a little bumpy but I didn’t see idiot renters helping those bumps. This was so worth the wait. Whether it’s together or solo these authors always deliver. I am so happy to have gotten an arc copy from GRR. The waiting was rough.

This is the continuation of the story of Saul, Troy, Geoff and Carter. It is the 3rd and final book in the trilogy of the Triskelion series. I loved how they fought for their relationship. This book is filled with emotions and hot steamy moments that keeps you turning the pages. The characters are wonderful and you feel for Troy. Please read the first two books in the series. Definitely recommended.

I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.

A beautifully done final book to this trilogy. Everyone coming together to make the intimacy of their relationship reflect the love, compassion, and need to being full circle a wonderful forever.

Saul, Troy, Carter and Geoff were incredibly satisfying.

Definitely do not reading it if you haven't read the previous two.
This is my least favorite of the serie, and as always, I found the pace too slow for my liking.
The characters are well developed and the foursome is really unique, but at the same time, the story didn't hooked me.

This book absolutely made the series for me. I really, really loved seeing Carter and Saul deepen their relationship and in turn strengthen their quad relationship. There are truly beautiful moments that made my eyes leak. Throughout the series I enjoyed the friend group so I also liked seeing Troy become closer to some of them.

This was a great ending to the series. The four of them have really come together to make something so beautiful. The two Doms and the switch have come together to heal Troy and all he’s lost. And poor Troy has lost so much. But he is so loved. These four men have a beautiful connection and a love soul deep.
