I had lost hope for this book very early on because of my struggle with immersion into the setting and the imagery. I felt like it was definitely a slow burn, and at some point I was over it. However, I made a promise to myself I’d finish it. The last 1/4 of this book shocked me and drew me in immediately as it brought everything full circle. I loved the symbolism and the themes of trauma, highlighting how important it is to experience the deepest of pains that come with it. It encouraged me to see that we as individuals must learn how to trust ourselves again, in order to navigate fulfilling lives by allowing ourselves sit with hard feelings . Some things are intrinsic to the body, and are there to guide us. To learning self-trust 🥂 .
This book is fairly well-executed, but I found it underwhelming overall.
The characters were interesting enough, and the writing was solid. But ultimately, I did not feel the feelings of suspense and creepiness that the author was trying to elicit in the reader.
I appreciate the theme of wanting to erase traumas and the way in which our memories create our personalities and identities. However, this book did not offer any deep insights on those questions and I was not made to care about the psychological challenges of the characters.
