Twenty-two, and I haven't felt more than a spark of magic. Which is more than a little awkward considering I'm leaving for The Academy of Magic in forty-eight hours. I'm a monster, or at least my fathers reassure me that I am. Though I'm not very monster-like if you believe the stereotypes. I spend most of my days curled up in my room with my nose buried in a good book. Despite preferring to hide away, my best friend Lexi is constantly encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone, but I'm okay the way I am. My life is going decently—if I do say so myself—until I step into my headmaster's office and into a whirlwind of trouble. Not to mention the sweet troll who is insistent on being my friend, my mountain man of a runes partner and my shy new tutor, who have me questioning whether my lady bits are on the fritz. When my past and present collide, I can't help but wonder if I'm going to make it through the term, let alone the next two years. I guess I'll just have to roll with the crazy or go insane. Either way, at least I'll have some eye candy along for the ride.

Monster Girl is the first book in a new series and is set in the shared Supernatural Realm that Willow and her men are part of. This book is a slow burn; why choose romance (which means the MFC will not have to choose between her love interests at the end of the book). Though there may be some bumps in the road, this series will end in a HEA (Happy Ever After). Sexual themes are suitable for +18.

3 stars only because I'm a sucker for the hidden destiny / magical academy trope.

Alright folks... I won't sugar coat things, the writing was not great. Not only were there continuity issues, but the dialogue left A LOT to be desired.

** just a quick editing continuity example - When we are first introduced to Oscar he's described as the biggest guy in the room and about 4 inches taller than our 6'1" MFC. A couple chapters later our MFC kneels down in front of him to give him a hug. My brain tried to rationalize this like maybe he was sitting down or something, but then a couple chapters after that Oscar bemoans the fact that his arms are so weak he can only carry ebooks or paperbacks because he can't hold heavy textbooks. I'm thinking that Oscar was originally written as a small skinny troll or something and then the author decided to change this up, but didn't carry it through all of the scenes.

There were other things like this too that just didn't mesh together.

I previously tried the vengeance books from this author and they also had similar issues. So while the storyline had potential, I think I'm going to let this author gain a little more experience before I read any more of her stuff.

DNF writing style not for me

This storyline could have been entertaining but the delivery let it down. We've already been told what the classifications mean yet the beginning chapters go through it all again, like we haven't just read all that.

The actual conversations are stilted and don't flow naturally, the extra info dumps inbetween do not help. Did the poor soul she bumped into really deserve that?? Even though the author tried to make the heroine likable, she's not personable.

The heroine wanted to gain her magic but refused to touch runes because she felt the power in them?? She knows some characters names then two chapters in she says she wonders what their name is......That map disappearing and reappearing had me going back, cause I'm extra like that. But those consistent issues kept pulling me out of the book. When I start rolling my eyes and skipping pages before 50% it's best to stop reading. These issues may be because of lack of good editing, well I sure hope so.

The main problem is, fair end fine the heroine may be socially awkward but do all the other characters have to be too? None of them stand out. Considering they are all over 6ft they could be the heroine reacting to a different circumstance with the same detachment.

New series by a semi new author and loved it ! The world is unique and interesting , the characters are different and I enjoyed the mystery while getting to know these new characters . It is a slow burn RH so I’m looking forward to a bit more relationship building in the next book . Can’t wait to see what happens next , great read !

Adult RH Supernatural romance - slow burn, why choose Academy series, Bk 1 - Not standalone
Magic, monsters, world building, multi POV - NO spoilers
Possible triggers: Mention of death, bullying

Nessa is our FMC, raised unconventionally, dearly loved by her three fathers, academically brilliant in theory but magically unsound in practice, loves to read and happy with her life as it is.
Life changes upon entering the Academy of Magic; theory will not be enough, Nessa has to access her magic. Scholastic life is completely different to what she is used to or even what she expected, her peers are not filling her with confidence and her fellow students are not welcoming. However a few certain males are causing a distraction to her thoughts and hormones.

That is all I will give you about the story itself for fear of spoilers however I enjoyed the book, the first chapter I found powerful and kept me reading the rest of the book in one sitting.
The characters, although set in an Academy are Year 3 so any Romance scenes for the older reader don't seem icky.
Nessa can seem awkward and frustrating at times but I put that down to her insular upbringing, there is character growth, albeit slow and I suspect as the series progress this will speed up. I do not like perfection in my characters, I like flaws so this is not a problem for me.

Adored her Fathers, found them well rounded and would like to see more involvement from them in future books or a spin off?

The MMC's, won't give their names will let that unfold, loved them, depths of personalities and have my favourite. Interactions with Nessa seemed natural and wasn't instant love, like the slower pace teasing.

Enough World building with Monster Power Level Rankings, the latter explained at the beginning which I referred to a couple of times, a decent plot with a steady drip of history, budding romance, intrigue and mystery to keep my attention.
I am certainly going to read Monster Girl Awakened Book 2 as I am very interested to see where this adventure goes.

10/10 recommend on this first installment of this supernatural series. It’s bassed on a young monster woman named Nessa who has yet to come into her powers. She’s had some seemingly tragic things happen in her past. Not all yet is clear tho I hope to find out in following books. She begins going to a supe academy with her friend and meeting some guys,I’m thinking her future harem but idk yet as this book is quite the slow burn. There’s only been a kiss or two mentioned so if you’re looking for steam this isn’t a place you will be finding it but it isn’t lacking in storyline. Not only is it a possible love story it also has mystery. Additional positives it was multiple pov and the cliffhanger wasn’t too horrible. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I did receive this book as an arc but as always all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The power levels at the school go from 0, the most powerful, down through A, B and C. A baby is found in the woods and both her parents have been killed. It's a couple decades later and Willow is now going to the Monster Academy.

She spent her first two years doing academy work online but apparently her magical ability is limited. Lexi, a hacker, becomes her friend at school.

There's a group that attacks supernaturals and she wants to be in a group that works against them. Things at the school get a little weird for her when a bully attacks her and she draws a creature from her mind to deal with him.

A student dies, there's an obnoxious guy who thinks she is his mate, someone trashes her room and there's a question of just what her power is or maybe its powers are?

It's a fairly good book for nothing in it touches me and makes me want to continue the series.

Unknown parentage and magic, a murder mystery and finding her mates - Nessa has her hands full during her first in person term at the academy. Showing up as a third year without ever attending the school thrusts her into the spotlight and she catches the eyes of a few handsome monsters. It’s also when her magic finally awakens. Unfortunately, it’s nothing like what she expected.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Monster Girl is a slow burn RH, so there’s not any spice in the book (loads of sexual tension though). I like Nessa - she’s fun, dark and super laid back. Her soon to be harem consists of Corin, Dylan and Oscar. Corin is a wild card - he’s got some serious secrets. Hopefully they will work through it all because I really like him! Dylan is the nerdy one who surprised me by being able to hold his own too! Oscar is fun and the first to dive head first into all things Nessa. I loved the world building and can’t wait to see what the next term brings.

I really enjoyed this first book in this new series. It's a supernatural RH slow burn and throughout this first book we get to get a really good feel of the characters and the plot. The world building was phenomenal and I loved the mystery and suspense that this story brings throughout. Nessa is a great FMC and I'm really intrigued by her and where this story is going to take her. The book had me drawn in for the start and I was hooked till the end. I'm so excited to see what comes next! The writing is fantastic, the characters are eye catching and the story comes to life on the pages! Great read! Bring on book 2!

💜

I won’t lie, I was hooked on the book from the prologue, it appeals to the reader’s emotions and empathy to hook you in. With a FMC with a strong sense of justice and a badass attitude it makes it a good book. This book had sufficient world building, humour, character development and is a fun read. It’s definitely a slow burn, however with all the different twists and turns of the book it’s not that noticeable because you’re more focused on the story than the romance, which makes it a good read!

awesome story

I need more of this series. I need answers. The headmaster seems shady as heck and I can’t believe who the killer is but somebody is obviously the person. I wonder why Lexie hasn’t introduced her mates to her best friend? Or why hasn’t nessa called her fathers ? See lots of questions 🙄🤣

You have to read this!

I was totally sucked in from the start. This book was an awesome read. I couldn't put it down. The FMC is both sweet and fierce and the guys are just dreamy. Great world-building and lots of mystery. This book is exactly what you want for your next read!

DNF at 50%. There were so many grammatical and spelling errors, combined with mistakes such as listing the characters name, then going on to say she wishes she knew his name, etc. Needs a thorough edit but would be a good book with an edit

It was a very quick read but it had me hooked from the first page. I wish the story was longer, I feel a lot more could have been added. Would recommend! Can’t wait for the next book.

Interesting idea but could have been better written. Not so much the vocabulary or grammar but more along the lines of world-building and clearly presented actions / developments.

Interesting Story 😃
This is a really interesting storyline! Nessa is some type of monster but she doesn’t really know what kind, only that she has magic but it appears to either be blocked or just veryyyyy unwilling 😖 she knows her dreams of working for the supe FBI rest on her powers coming through! She’s hoping that now she has to attend a supe academy she can work toward those dreams…..
However as you can imagine it is not all plain sailing! Nessa does gain access to her magic but with no idea what it actually does or how to employ it 😩 it certainly leads to some crazy moments - although Unicorn is a definite plus 😍
This is a slow burn so no steam in this one although we do get introduced to the guys who I believe will be in her harem in this one! They are all totally different characters which is great, but it’s a bit shallow in what we actually know about them at the moment so I’m hoping that develops along with their relationship on the next book 😁 although there is some good mystery building around Mountain Man!
It’s great to have the multi-POV, especially including the villain who may either be the murderer at school or the ones who’s taking all the missing supes……there’s some intrigue going on!

Intriguing

An interesting story, entertaining with a little mystery thrown in. Definitely need more, so many unanswered questions remain and I need the answers.
