Micah's Goodbye

Rate this book
Micah Manor seems to have everything going for him. He’s the star quarterback, poised to receive a football scholarship. He has an abundance of friends, and from the outside, he appears to be happy. Sometimes, appearances are deceiving. All Micah really wants is acceptance that he fears he can never have. Micah has a secret, a secret he’s been trying to hide for so long he has reached his breaking point.
Matthew Manor is the pastor of one of the largest churches in the area. He tries to be a leader, as well as a role model for his son. While he tries to be kind and compassionate to everyone, he has not made it a secret that he disagrees with homosexuality in general.
Jake Bradley has been Micah’s best friend since kindergarten. As they grew up, their friendship had turned into more. The relationship that he has with Jake is one that Micah has gone to great lengths to hide from his parents, as he feels that this relationship would cause them to turn their backs on him completely. Despite how close they are, Jake is unaware of the massive amount of torment that has been churning in Micah’s mind.
Micah’s feelings culminate in a suicide attempt that leaves him barely clinging to life. Those who love him can do nothing but wait and hope he recovers. Even in the uncertainty of his survival, Micah has caused a shift in the world around him as those closest to him must overcome their own obstacles, try to understand all of the things he was trying to hide, and come to terms with who he really is.

Honestly, this one deserves 5 stars for the message alone. The storyline of a gay teen who hasn't come out yet for fear of his preacher father's views on the matter, is a story that needs telling more often. This is a book that every single parent should read, regardless of their child's sexual orientation. We should all do a better job of just loving, regardless of people's differences, and this book is a phenomenal reminder of that.

Now, on to the writing. Morrison wrote this story beautifully. The characters were well developed, and she did a great job of pulling me into the story right away. Obviously, this isn't like most books I read where I'm expecting action packed sequences, and yet Morrison still managed to keep my interest throughout. That's talent.

I think I was crying throughout 80% of this book, so you need to mentally and emotionally prepare yourself before reading, and if you can, it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars for sure, and I look forward to more from this author.

I’m sorry. I feel really bad but this book just wasn’t for me.

Im aware of the difficulties that the LGBTQ+ community has in deeply religious communities but for personal reasons- I don’t really read book that focus on religion. This one does, a lot, it’s basically integral to the whole story. But it’s not for me.

I also thought the dialogue didn’t flow very well and it was just too heavy for me.

Sorry x

Micah’s Goodbye was one of most poignant books/novels I have ever read in my life. It was a beautifully written story about an attempted suicide, it’s aftermath and how it affected those who loved him.

It took me a few days to finish this book because I had to give myself a break from the emotional roller coaster it brought. But I couldn’t stay away for too long because I was so invested with Micah and Jake’s story.

The message of this story is timely as the LGBTQI+ community is under attack, particularly our transgender friends and family. I’d like to leave you my favorite quote from the book.

“... don't be afraid to be who you are. We can't change who we are, so we should embrace it. We are all amazing in our own way. Don't let fear stop you from being you, because you are one of a kind, and the world needs you. You’re here for a reason. You’re you for a reason. You are who you are, so own it.”

I highly recommend this book and thank you PK for being an ally.

I don't think it's possibile to give less than five stars to this book. The issue is more concerning and treated with such a delicacy.

WOW!!

So glad I picked up this book!! Once I started reading I couldn't stop... I devoured it and fall in love with it! ❤

Wow. I am so going to read EVERYTHING P.K. Morrison writes (author love gets more real!).

I'm trying to think of ways to go about describing this book, and I'm not really sure how to start. It's dark, depressing, and amazing. Despite those incredibly heavy trigger warnings, this was entirely wholesome and I was crying through most of it. Everyone should read it. You might hate it (and it'll get to you), but you must read it. However, definitely don't step into this one lightly.

This is a story that needs to be told more often. It's a beautiful coming-of-age story about a gay teen —Micah, who's still trying to define himself and all of his edges, to learn to be unafraid of wanting to be who he is and loving who he loves while facing conflicts that are too familiar to a lot of us. Micah attempted suicide in fear of not being accepted if his loved ones discovered his secret.💔😭😭

I think this is a really powerful novel that should be read by so many, especially parent, regardless of their child's sexual orientation. We should all do a better job of just loving despite people's differences.

Micah's Goodbye was very well paced. I never found the story to be dragging or boring. I loved P.K. Morrison's writing and the character development.

This book was Such an intense emotional rollercoaster. So keep your box of tissues close and be prepared.

I really loved this book and would definitely recommend it!❤

This is a book you can learn a lot from

A close friend once told me, a good book or movie is one which makes you think and learn something. I can just say this book is really worth the time you spend reading it. You learn a lot about the problems people who are seen as different by others confront in society, and much more. Especially I liked the place where Matthew (Micah's father and the church's pastor) gave a sermon after his son's suicide. It was moving and very educative about bible at the same time.
Moreover, the book's plot was very intriguing, the writing flew and was crafted. I am happy to have read this book, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a new thing in their life.

Truly emotional read

This is one truly emotional read. The topic of attempted suicide, it’s aftermath, and the feelings leading to the event were so beautifully written. There’s a religious context, of love and acceptance. Tissues required!!

An inspirational and moving read.

A thought-provoking book. Set around a suicide attempt near the beginning, it follows the aftermath through different perspectives of the main characters. All of them question their own parts in what led Micah, the pastor’s son, to want to take his own life, rather than reveal his homosexuality. If they had behaved differently, could they have prevented it? The narrative explores perspectives on self-acceptance, guilt, homosexuality, love and acceptance of others, and the questioning of cultural and religious doctrine.

One chapter was dedicated entirely to the pastor’s sermon while his son lies in a coma. While I felt this was a bit lengthy and distracting, it was also an interesting perspective on Biblical interpretations. If you want a book that will get you thinking more deeply about your own perspectives on life and other people, I would thoroughly recommend this one.

Did not disappoint

This is my first read from the author and I was very impressed. I appreciated the different point of views in the story. The characters were well developed and I never got bored with the intense storyline, the only reason I gave a four instead of five stars is I would of liked some insight into Micha from Micha in the beginning but that is just me personally. The story was still great and made me emotional in parts which is not at all normal for me. I strongly recommend.

This book definitely pulled on all my heart strings.

Starts off with a bang with Micah's suicide attempt. The story takes you through the journey that his family, boyfriend and friends are going through while Micah lays in a coma. The hard truth of how simple, not thought through actions could have an impact on someone's life. Chapter 15 was such a thorough and perfect explanation on how the Bible can me misinterpreted throughout the years and how people pick and choose how to view it. PK Morrison did a wonderful job!

Astonishing!

So much to say. I didn't have a dry eye through the entire book.

The heartfelt love and level of understanding and caring between these two is heartbreaking.

I truly hope that someday the "haters" can even begin to understand the destruction they cause in so many precious lives when they spew their garbage.

Not an "understanding" so that they can be hurt but so that they can in some way feel the pain that is caused and begin to build someone up instead of tearing them down.

Well written. I love that it is from a point of view that during the course of the book where his eyes are opened to what he was against and the realization that God truly loves everyone, no matter who they choose to love. Also, makes you really step back and realize how people don't always pay attention to the signs of a depressed person, and just how much others can hurt without even knowing they are doing it.

A real tear-jerker. AKA - Get your kleenex ready.

The story of Micah was an engaging, the characters were likable, and while I hated the things that were happening, it was a tale that needs to be told more often.

Also, kudos to the author, because it didn't end how I thought it would.

“And that's what scars, both physical and emotional really were. They were proof that you could overcome. They were reminders of where you had been and how you had become who you were.”

I’m completely breathless after reading this gorgeous gem of a book in one sitting. And as I flew through MICAH’S GOODBYE, I kept thinking that it should be required reading for anyone interacting with a young adult, and for all young adults as well. Actually, make that required reading for all humans. If we could all demonstrate as much love, support, and understanding (while also quickly learn from our mistakes) as the richly drawn characters in this book, the world would be a far better place.

But geez, listen to me. Didactic impact aside, this is first and foremost a beautifully written, emotive book featuring a nuanced, complex cast, all coming to terms with perceived blind spots in how they handled their relationship with our titular character. I loved each of them so much that it’s hard to pick a favorite, but Micah and Jake (of course), and Sadie and Trisha are up there, as are the Manors and Elisa. But really, there was so much kindness and love seeping through each page, and I sobbed my way through the entire read.

MICAH’S GOODBYE is really special and important. And, quite simply, so very, very good. I hope many more readers pick it up, as the author’s message and talent are not to be missed.

Love is love.
