Secret Societies and Civil War!

After Alshari Court Wizard Pentandra survives her third assassination attempt in the Tower of Sorcery, she sends her deputy, Sir Rondal, to investigate the mysterious origins of the attempt while she contends with Alshari court politics. Life is strained for her, as she tries to raise her triplet daughters while her husband is away. For Rondal’s part, his investigations include his precocious fiancée, Gatina, Kitten of Night, and learning how to manage his new relationship. Matters come to a head when he and Kitten rescue an old woman and her grandson from certain death . . . only to discover she is the lost hedgewitch who gave Pentandra a book of secret prophecies about the future.

The tension rising in southern Alshar seems to break when the Duke and Duchess announce the relocation of the court to the summer capital of Vorone for a season. Pentandra intends to relax and manage her lands for the summer, safely away from assassins and undead. But then her friend and liege, Minalan the Spellmonger, announces that he’s taking the summer off, too, dumping the responsibilities for leadership on her overburdened shoulders while he journeys on an expedition of exploration. What could possibly go awry?

Within days of the Spellmonger leaving, the Kingdom is plunged into a civil war between the knights of the kingdom, led by Prince Tavard, and the nascent power of the magi, led by Viscount Terleman. As the battles play out in rapid-fire fashion across Gilmora and the Wilderlands, Pentandra increasingly finds herself losing control of the situation. Knowing prophecies that concern the matter don’t seem to help her one bit – indeed, they cloud and confuse issues as she helplessly watches the kingdom she’s worked so hard for descend into a contest between the new powers and the old. Worse, the Duchy of Merwyn has decided to invade Remere, while the pirate stronghold in Farise has begun raiding the kingdom’s shipping with magic and the Nemovort Karakush plots in the Westlands. To top it off, unbeknownst to her Rondal, her trusted deputy, secretly interferes in kingdom politics in ways that could have repercussions for generations.

Not even the return of the Spellmonger from his expedition is much help, as Minalan was changed by the experience in ways that disturb both Pentandra and Rondal. Though he’s able to cool the hot heads who are fighting for the future of the kingdom, a new menace arises where they least expect it: the great fortress of Darkfaller, near the center of the kingdom, is unexpectedly taken by the Nemovorti, powerful undead who have sworn to see humanity defeated. And they are led by an undeniably evil soul with a disturbingly familiar face . . .

Pentandra and Rondal feel things are spiraling out of control. Minalan’s return has brought some peace, but it doesn’t last as the new enemy makes an unexpected strike at the heart of the magi. The only hope for relief and the future of the kingdom now seems to lie in the wrinkled hands of a very old, very wise hedgewitch!

Well, we are completely invested into this saga with Minalan by this time. This IS the 14th book after all (not to mention the few spinoffs that have recently come out to give us more information to better understand some of the goings on in the same world during this time). So yes, invested we are.

If you are just thinking about starting this book now....STOP. Go back to the beginning and start from there. None of this will make sense, and even if you are able to get the gist of what is happening, you will NOT be able to understand the nuances of all of the issues in play. And TRUST ME...you will WANT to be a part of this. This was a surprise series that I started with absolutely NO expectations and it completely grabbed me and somehow made me fall in love with a CRAZY Spellmonger who is very arrogant, and so unbelievably lucky that it is a joy to watch (that shouldn't work, but somehow it does). How we got to where we are from where we started is nothing less than AMAZING. And I for one am so, so happy that I have been along for the ride.

So....what to say about this book? Well, to be completely honest. I've been sick during most of this book and ended up listening to it completely on audio (because reading when you feel nauseas is not a favorite thing for me). Unfortunately, when you are sick and listening, you tend to fall asleep at times and because of that, there were certain parts I heard more than once. Normally, that would annoy the heck out of me, but there was so much going on...and I was trying to fit in all the "new" information that we had just received in the last book (his journey into the non-magical realm) and somehow figure out how much it exactly CHANGED our wonderful Spellmonger that it ended up helping me.

What do we know now? Well, without giving out any spoilers, let's just say that Minalan - while he did unfortunately undergo some really bad stuff during his journey into the non-magical realm, that "stuff" is going to help him get to where he needs to go and to have the beginnings of a plan to "save the world" . Makes sense? Nope, not unless you are caught up.

We are FINALLY starting to understand what is happening on this planet. We are beginning to understand that the "humani" who came to this planet were extremely advanced and then ...well.. things happened (No spoilers, right?) that changed everything. Minalan is FINALLY in a position to do what needs to be done, but it is not going to be easy. A lot of things happen in this book. We are left in quite the cliffhanger with the fact that many characters whom we have come to like are now in danger.

What does that mean for me as a reader? It means that I am going to be very impatient for the next book to come out. Seriously? Is that even a question?

So....please Mr. Mancour. Keep writing. It seems like things are only going to get more exciting and interesting.

I can't wait.

I love this series so much, and this book doesn't disappoint at all. Most of this book takes place concurrently with book #13 and follows Pentandra and Rondal as they try to hold the kingdom and duchy together in Minalan's absence. Gatina also gets a lot of coverage and in my opinion this should be read after Shadowplay as it contains a number of spoilers from that book.

For this book, the writing was excellent as always, the characters are great, and the world is so rich and captivating. As the books from Penny's viewpoint tend to do, this focused more on the politics of the world and less on raw magical power. It also focused a lot more on Rondal and Gatina who both have more studied and subtle approaches to solving problems and deserve more time in the series.

This book was great, this series is amazing, and I can't wait for the next dozen books to be added to it.

TLDR: A Rondal and Pentandra book that fills in what occurred while Min and co were off galivanting around Anghysbel. Maybe not as gripping as some of the others in the series, but still a great listen to anyone as hooked on this series as I am. But as ever, you’ll need the context of the prior novels to get anything rewarding out of this book.

Review:
Well, Mancour managed to squeeze this book out only a few months after his last. May the gods bless that man’s infuriating capacity to churn out book after book from my favourite series. Our last outing to the Spellmonger universe left a series of tantalising bombshells lay in our laps, and this book sets to explaining just how those shells were primed, aimed, and fired, all from Pentandra, Rondal, and Old Antimei’s perspectives. Just because we know most of what’s coming, doesn’t mean you’re going to enjoy the ride any less.
Time for my usual spiel about this series. You can’t just pick one up and expect to know what’s going on. We’re 14 books in now, my friends. If you’re reading this one then I’ll assume you’ve read the others, because if you haven’t then you’re not going to have half a clue about what’s going on. So, this book takes place in the time just before Min and co leave for Anghysbel up until a while after their return, explaining how things seem to have fallen apart so spectacularly in the absence of our beloved Spellmonger. There’s a lot of politicking, a lot of subterfuge, and not a vast amount of action. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved the book and smashed through all twenty hours of it in under a week, but this certainly wasn’t the strongest book in the series so far.
One of the main focusses of this book is to fill in a little more information on the undead menace that is busy terrorising swaths of southern Alshar and how the mages and mundane are endeavouring to drive them back. I see this book as less of a proper novel and more of a great deal of context nestled within an entertaining narrative. That’s not to say that there aren’t elements that will get your heart thumping. The ending in particular genuinely hammered my emotions in ways I didn’t anticipate. As ever, Mancour has written a great story, but it’s just lacking the bite of most of his other books in this series, priming us for what I expect to be some truly spectacular opening chapters in the next instalment.
It was nice to step away from Min’s first-person perspective and slide into the shoes of the Alshari Court Wizard and her stalwart deputy, those being Penny and Ron. Ron in particular gets some much-needed character development regarding himself and Gatina. In the previous books she always seemed a little too young, naive in some ways despite her amazing abilities at shadow magic and thievery, but here she really gets fleshed out to the degree that she deserves in this book. We also get a few chapters from Old Antimei, learning a lot more about the whole prophecy thing and how Penny has been trying to juggle her preparations for what she thinks she knows is going to happen. Again, it’s all thoroughly entertaining, but I feel like the book could have been another 5-10 hours longer and really gotten stuck into some good, old-fashioned action there at the end instead of just setting us up for things to come. But I shouldn’t complain. The fact that Mancour released this book only 3 months after the last book (at least the audiobook release) means that I really can’t hold its comparatively short length relative to his usual novels against him.
In short, this isn’t the best of the books in the series. In fact, it’s nowhere near the best. However, that’s not to say in any way, shape, or form that it’s not good. I loved it, just as I love every instalment in this series. It’s well written, well planned, and well executed. I can’t get enough of this series, so even a mediocre addition to the Spellmonger saga is, to me at least, a good step above most of the fantasy I listen to.
As for narration, as ever John Lee brings his A-game to ensure that the characters of this universe, both good and bad, feel deep and truly alive (or undead, as the case may be). Another great job.

Just when you think you have things figured out, the Spellmonger throws you a twist. Then another. And then another. I hope we don't have to wait to terribly long for the next in the series.

3.75. Either the series or me is feeling tired at this point. Not betting it's not me.

Less Tangled Verbiage but Shotgun Spread to Plot

Hardly any of word mechanics issues that plague some books in series. But book tries cover huge number of plot threads that have developed. So the story flow is stretched thin in many places. And that is after spending 30% of book recapping and backfilling the previously told storyline from the viewpoint of people back home while Min is gone on his big expedition.

Catching up is good sometimes.

Hedgewitch follow those who did not go on the quest to the jevolar and we spend 75% of the book swing exactly how the events PE NY reports to Min at.the end of the previous installment. It feels.fuse at times and we don't get the smooth narritive.of discovery aan intrigue we have grown accustomed to. The number of action sequences is rather low and said.sequences are exceptionally short.and light on the level of detail we usually see. I think it is because of the sheer volume of events that.need to.be.covered so I understand but it did.reduce my enjoyment to some extent thus the 4 stars.

All in all, Hedgewitch paints the.broad tapestry of calories and we afe.greated.to.character development for characters who have previously been on the fringes and spins a tale that is full and rich as.well as easy to.be invested in.

I'm a die-hard Spellmonger fan but this volume was found lacking. For one, no Spellmonger until two-thirds of the way into the book. This book more or less happened at the same time as Footwizard, but told from the POV of Miralin's former apprentice and Pentangra. I didn't find neither story very compelling and didn't think their stories needed to be told as it added little to nothing overall. Once Miralin appeared, the story really picked up, though this section could have been added onto Footwizard, as it dealt with what the Spellmonger found during his travels in that book. It ends right as action is about to start after nearly 300 wizards are stolen from the magical fair.

Great connecting book!

I loved this book, as it seemed to finish setting the stage that we saw in Anghelbel. We saw what happened while the spellmonger was on his trip, and we set the stage for finishing off the Nemovorte.

Not a lot of progression in this one, mostly just catching up with the rest of the crew, and maybe another few weeks. We co front taverd and the alka alon council, and set up the next big battle, but there weren't any significant fights in the book at all, a fee beat downs, and some skirmishes.

Overall a good set up.

Wow!

Mancour did it again. This was so great. I would recommend rereading book 13 before diving into this one. I didn't and forgot some of the most important parts alluded to in his story. This was a great perspective from Rondal and Pentandra.

I'm not sure how he continues to write a full novel about one small portion and still make it interesting, but he does. I highly recommend continuing in the series. He may very well make it to book 30 as originally intended (or at least what's heard was intended).

I haven't completed this book and most likely would have given it a higher rating in spite of all the grammatical errors throughout the series. But the author had to go and ruin this book by making one of the main Warmages gay.
I was so thrilled to FINALLY read an epic without homosexuality until now. Even if it is merely mentioned thus far. Keep it behind closed doors where it belongs! It is displeasing to God and those of us with moral values.
Authors everywhere need to stop catering to the woke idiots out there.

The prelude to greater conflict

This book was an enjoyable perspective of the events from the previous two books that had focused on Minalans point of view but now told from Pentandra, and others, points of view. This book advances the overall story only slightly but in very satisfying ways that provide great anticipation for the next installment in the series, which we hope will focus on the Mad Mage of Sevendor! Thanks Terry for another great installment.

Goosebumps.

I feel it took me a bit to get into the swing of this book. Usually I cannot read Mr Mancours books fast enough. I got hooked about 25% thru and could not put it down. The ending left me with goosebumps and sadness that I am going to have to wait so long for the next. Thank you!!!

nailed it!

Well crafted, the novel begins and ends with a similar scene, closing the circle of the narrative.

This covers much of the same time frame as book 13, but focusing on different characters. Then it sets the stage for the future.

This is the good stuff.

A few proofreading errors, but mostly quite clean.

Now this is the kind of story I have come to love. Terry thank you after your last book went in a odd direction this one was spot on.
Full of action in all kinds of direction. Feels me with great anticipation for your next. At age 70 I hope to live to see the culmination of this wonderful series.

never fails

Terry Mancour never fails to deliver. While this book doesn’t have a lot of the spellmonger in it. The action and suspense that we get from characters that we know and love more than make up for it. I’m glad that rondal got to do a little bit more growing up in this book.

Always leaves me wanting more, wish there were 100 more chapters. Spellmonger series is one that starts off a little crude but has gotten its legs under it and took off at a sprint. This story has pulled me in harder than most other series I have ever read. Till the next installment, hats off to you Terry!

Worst book Yet

First 80% of the book can be ignored. Story is still good. This is not good enough to be a main storyline book. It should have been an assisting book. if this way of storytelling continues You can skip this book. The meaningful parts will probably be covered in next book in way more detail than needed.

It’s been a while since I have read the last book and I really appreciate that this book contains specific references to events in the last book that helped me remind me of what occurred. This book was very much a catch-up with events in other areas book and then set the seen for the next book. It was kind of fun that the climactic moment was a meeting. It was a really good meeting.

Each. Book. Gets. Better!

So deliciously satisfying. Each book I finish reading I wonder how the next one could be as good. But the next book exceeds my expectations so deviously. There are random encounters and people from previous books that reappear and add new meaning, depth and context to the story.

Keep the book coming terry. Also this would make a great TV show with the right people making it.

I was NOT ready for this book to end. Mancour’s worldbuilding is truly masterful.
Absolutely no spoilers because this book is an important link in the series and sets up the next stage beautifully.
I sincerely hope there will be a few short stories from now until the next book!

What a brilliant continuation of this saga. The depth to the characters amazes me. This is a book that doesn’t want to be placed back on the table until it’s completed. Next book please.
