A good story with well-written characters that I definitely enjoyed.
As I read this book, I realized that I really like when the main characters meet in the first chapter, just like in this story. We meet Kendra and Lucas in the first chapter, and we learn about the tragic events in their past. I liked these main characters straight away.
They are multi-dimensional and interesting. Lucas is a strong man, but not your typical imperious alpha male that romance now abounds. He is an excellent example of how you can create a really strong male character that supports the heroine but does not impose his will on her. I also love that Lucas appreciates Kendra for her character and how she handles problems, not just for her beauty. Kendra deserves it, she is indeed a strong woman, fully capable of independent decisions. Together, Kendra and Lucas make a remarkably successful couple. I think they fit together perfectly, and you definitely feel it.
The fact that they become friends before becoming lovers also contributes to this impression. There is no insta-love or even insta-lust here. They are unquestionably attracted to each other, but they don't play on it right away. I appreciate it for sure, it’s refreshing. The sex scenes aren't very explicit. Kendra and Lucas had known each other in the past but are now reconnecting. And although they only spend a few weeks together, you don't get the feeling that everything is happening too fast. There is something very comforting and heart-warming about their relationship. And these are the vibrations that persist throughout the book, even though there are some rather serious and even dark topics.
I really like it when there is also an extensive non-romance thread in my romances. This is the case here. Kendra and Lucas's developing feelings are intertwined with their efforts to solve Kendra's problems. It works for me very well. I was really interested in this plot.
The author also did a great job of letting the events and actions of the characters show their stories and their personalities. This is especially true of Lucas, who is often ostracized in the society and this is how we learn what his situation is and how he reacts to it. We can also see it in the case of Kendra, we observe how she slowly regains self-confidence and takes control of her life. Great job.
The only thing I didn’t like was a minor paranormal thread. It was unnecessary in my opinion. I think it could be easily avoided by relying on the normal skills of the characters.
So far, I have only read the older books by this author, published in the 90s. This one I undeniably liked the most and I will undoubtedly look at other books in this series. I also recommend this book to people who like endings in Shakespearean style.

Kendra has lost everything, her son, her marriage, her life, all because of a lie. Her husband only cared about her money and labelled her the black sheep of society. As a newly divorced women, ostracized by society, she much fight her way back to regain her honour and get back her son. With the help of a certain handsome Royal Navy officer, she is able to face her battles head strong and regain what she loves.
I really liked how well rounded the two main leads were. In most historical dramas, the story very much surrounds their love story and not much else. Putney strays away from the norm with success and some fails. She tackles issues which are little talked about for historical romance genre even though they would be prevalent for the time. I really enjoyed how the author handles issues surrounding Kendra's domestic abuse and the inequality faced by women during the times. I also appreciated seeing a community which supports hurt women much like the present day women's shelter.
Although I did like the deviances it took from the norm, I did wish there was more romance in the novel. I didn't feel a strong spark for the love interests which I really need with my historical romances. Despite this, I do think readers who prefer a more realistic and mature romance will enjoy it.

A question of honor!
All this should have made for a mezmerizing read and yet for me the electricity just wasn't there. The opening scene promised that. A strange woman sweeping into a ton ballroom dressed in black and for some reason the center of the ton's disdain. She's rescued by a gentleman of uncommon empathy.
What follows is a story of Revenge and Second Chances, with strong aspects of women in Abusive Marriages, and the problems surrounding divorce. Themes of friendship and education in 1816 are present with the school, Westerfield Academy, the Rogues attended making a reappearance.
Both Kendra Douglas and Lucas Mandeville, Lord Foxton, have ghosts to bury, the theme being honor.
Kendra, a victim of her husband's perfidy has been divorced under shameful and awful circumstances. But even worse revelations about her husband will be exposed.
Lucas has been the subject of speculation around parole from the French and circumstances that forced him to break that parole. He spent his time making amends, hiding out with a Franciscan healer, a trained bone setter. I found this part of Lucas' life, his bone setting abilities, that border on gifted, intriguing.
However there were so many themes bouncing around I felt quite giddy.
An interesting read but I didn't quite feel the continuing electricity between Kendra and Lucas that the opening promised.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this book. This was a pleasant read with very clear distinction between the good guys and the bad guys. It did feel that almost everyone was little too nice and that everything always turned out so well. But, maybe that's not a bad thing in the crazy world we live in today.

Già nel libro precedente ero rimasta colpita dalla figura di Lucas, ufficiale inglese, nobile, già beniamino dell'alta società, scaraventato nelle guerre napoleoniche come tanti altri giovani convinti di diventare eroi. Poi sono arrivati la prigionia e un lungo periodo di umiliazioni, tali da spingere al passo più disonorevole: la fuga, la codardia, la perdita di un onore familiare e sociale peggiore della morte.
Lucas ha perciò scelto l'anonimato, scontando il suo rimorso nelle vesti di un frate guaritore, un aggiusta ossa che vagava nelle campagne francesi, finché qualcuno che non lo aveva dimenticato è tornato per portarlo a casa.
Questo è l'antefatto e vi consiglio di leggere il libro precedente, perché a me è piaciuto molto.
In ogni caso, ora Lucas ha riavuto tutto; ricchezza, nome, posizione. Proprio per questo, lui tra tutti, non può restare insensibile alle condizioni in cui viene accolta o, meglio, non accolta, lady Kendra, una giovane donna divorziata e ostracizzata dal Ton.
Anzi, proprio quest'aura scandalosa, lo attira come un magnete, per scoprire se la donna sta scontando colpe reali o meri pregiudizi.
Aiutare Kendra, contro un ex-marito crudele e contro la scia di maldicenze che la seguono, diviene la nuova missione di Lucas, una specie di riscatto per il suo precedente momento di debolezza.
In questo viene aiutato da molti dei personaggi delle serie precedenti, uomini e donne non proprio convenzionali e più aperti di mentalità.
Un romanzo piacevole e vivace, uno dei più belli della serie. Preparatevi a un bel po' di avventura e a duelli con gentildonne spadaccine.

Hmm, dacă aș fi citit-o acum 10 ani, i-aș fi dat poate 3 sau chiar 4 stele, fiindcă pe atunci eram lihnită după astfel de povești. Dar acum, tot ce pot scoate din mine e 2 stele. Nu am urât-o, evident, de vreme ce am și terminat-o, dar a fost o carte călduță, nimic deosebit la ea. Mi-au plăcut protagoniștii, Kendra și Lucas, dar am avut un mare dinte împotriva felului cum Putney a ales să portretizeze toate personajele. De parcă toți erau feminiști sau ceva de genul. Ceea ce, să fim serioși, pe atunci nu exista. Nici cei mai mari gentlemani, care respectau femeile, nu scoteau pe gură anumite replici atât de... actuale pentru noi acum. Cam asta m-a deranjat cel mai tare. În rest, o lectură pe alocuri plăcută, pe alocuri meh, care nu m-a solicitat intelectual.

This is my first book of the series and I felt it's fine read as a stand alone. You probably get more character introduction and death by reading the series in order though. I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything though.
This book, as you can probably guess from the title, is about two people who have lost their honor according to society. Our hero, Lucas, was an officer in the navy and a prisoner of war. The heroine, Kendra, is a scandalous divorcee. They come together at a ball and sense each other's vulnerability and protect each other.
Kendra is a very strong character. Independent, fierce, and determined to get back what is hers. Society has been cruel to her since her divorce but she still holds her head up proudly.
Lucas is very sweet and caring. He's been through a lot, emotionally and physically, but hasn't let that damage his personality. He's very steadfast and willing to help Kendra and protect her.
Give this a try if you're in the mood for:
-A regency time period novel – this takes place in 1816
-A novel with darker themes (lots of emotional turmoil, loss, abuse)
-An experienced heroine – she's been married and divorced
-Soldier hero – the hero was a soldier in the navy
-Lots of things going on – there are lot of factors in play here, things the couple are trying to resolve
-Lower to mid steam – kisses and sex happen and it's open door but it's pretty short
I wasn't a huge fan of this story. It was rather dark, but without the emotional pull and angst of, say Kerrigan Byrne's work. There's a lot of loss, struggles, hurt from the past going on and not a lot of romance. I didn't really understand the characters attraction to each other. I wasn't getting butterflies. And the sex was very short and lackluster. I haven't read much of Putney's work, but I do remember Thunder and Roses. WHERE was that heat and fire? There's a scene from that book that had me breathless when they are playing billiards. I felt no remnant of that heat and sexiness here.

Lucas Mandeville, Baron Foxton, served admirably as an officer in the Royal Navy, but that all ended when his ship was captured, and he was taken prisoner by the French. Given the fact that he broke his parole, his honor is now in question and his first attempt at braving a London ballroom isn’t going so well. Lucas would rather be anywhere else, in fact.
When a lovely lady enters the ball dressed all in black and bringing with her not so subtle whispers of scandal, Lucas comes to her aide by asking for a dance. Lucas realizes he met the now divorced Kendra Douglas before he left for the Navy. He offers to help her in any way he can as she seeks to clear her blackened reputation and find the beloved son her former husband has hidden from her. As they work together to uncover the truth of what happened on the night that brought about her ruin, Lucas and Kendra develop a close relationship and a trust that could see them through a happy life together, if they can ever clear the way forward in the midst of such disaster.
This is only my fourth read from this author, but I can safely say it is my favorite of her works. We have a mature hero and heroine communicating openly with each other and helping each other through their respective issues and hurts. There was something lovely in that, especially when added to the great chemistry they had together. The rallying of friends and allies around Kendra and Lucas was also quite delightful, as was the fact that this felt like a hard-won second chance for both of them. The plot took us all over the place, but somehow it always felt purposeful, rather than discombobulated. This story held my attention and I loved that Lucas and Kendra stood up for themselves and each other. I’m hoping this series continues.

A different sort of historical romance
I really enjoyed this one because of its originality. The characters had a lot of depth and worked extremely well together. Having a divorced heroine in a Regency romance is not a simple task to pull off and I think Mary Jo Putney did a remarkable job with it. The hero also had an intriguing background as an escaped POW. When the two meet and start working together, both find the trust and love they never believed could be theirs. A wonderful story of fighting back against the strictures condemning them both, of restoring reputations, and finding happiness against all odds.
I really enjoyed this one because of its originality. The characters had a lot of depth and worked extremely well together. Once Dishonored by Mary Jo Putney is book five in her Rogues Redeemed series. Though part of a series, it reads as a standalone.
Lucas “Foxton” Mandeville and Kendra Douglas are both being shunned by the ton. Now they’re doing it together. Why wouldn’t the two most scandalous individuals join forces? Can they regain their reputations and discover each other in the process?
5 out of 5 stars. The plot is well-conceived, well-executed, and intriguing. The characters are well-rounded and believable. I enjoyed all aspects of Once Dishonored and highly recommended it to readers of historical romance.

Royal Navy officer Lucas Mandeville, Lord Foxton, and Kendra Douglas, former Lady Denshire, come together as two society outcasts. Lucas escaped French capture and is considered dishonorable for breaking terms of prisoner parole. Kendra is a divorcee, set up and accused by her husband of adultery. Lucas, disdained but accepted because of his title, agrees to help Kendra clear her name and restore her reputation so she can get her son back.
This is the fifth book in the Rogues Redeemed. It's helpful, but not completely necessary, to read the series in order. Lucas is introduced in previous books, and many characters from the series appear. Lucas's "almost-brother" Simon is the hero of the previous book, and he and his wife Suzanne feature heavily.
This was a somewhat enjoyable story, but my rating reflects the fact that the romance took a MAJOR backseat. Kendra's journey was the real front-burner and a majority of the book centered on revealing details that led to her divorce, regaining her confidence, finding out secrets, and getting her revenge. I felt like there were too many things along the way that clicked into place too easily. Lucas also had his own side plot as a healer that took up a lot of space, as well as a couple of encounters with numerous characters in a co-ed fencing facility. When it did come around to the romance, it was a bit plug-and-play and didn't draw me in at all.

Lucas and Kendra could have their own soap opera show with the amount of baggage they each carried and I was positively hooked on what the final outcome would be! There’s a little bit of everything happening-reputations at stake, divorce law-fascinating business there, high society...the good, the bad, and definitely the ugly, a dashing bit of romance, a women’s fencing club! information merchants, and an extended family you’ll wish to have over for holiday dinners just to hear about their colorful pasts!
I haven’t read previous books in this series, the matter of which will be rectified sooner rather than later, and had no trouble following along.

I decided to have a quick glance at the first chapter of this book at bedtime and I was still reading three hours later! Literally couldn’t put it down and I was instantly engaged in both the hero and heroine’s lives. They are both considered ‘dishonoured’, and although this takes a different form for each of them, their shared experiences and feelings of being outside society draw them to each other. I loved the way they battled each other’s enemies and stood up for one another, and it is always immensely satisfying when a truly horrible villain gets his come-uppance. Add a couple of delightful children, a whole host of protective and helpful friends, and you have a wonderful story – I loved it!

2020 bk 308. 2021 bk 201. Mary Jo Putney continues her series of survivors of the Napoleonic wars and her crusade to explain how bad the lives of women were in that time period. With few legal rights, a woman was at the mercy of her husband, and when that husband was a terror. This is the story of Kendra who seeks to have her son restored to her and her name cleared. Lucas Mandeville is trying to clear his name and find his place now that he has returned to England. This novel ties together so many threads and has the perfect ending. I do enjoy Mary Jo Putney's regency novels.

I was looking forward to Lucas story, he seemed like a good person on the other book. He is still a good person in this book but he is also really boring, strangely magical for no reason, and impulsive. He let people step all over him, helps the heroine for incongruous motives beyond that she looked like an outcast, which lead to her poring her life the moment they “meet” again.

October 12, 2020Another wonderful story of courage, redemption, and of course love by Mary Jo Putney. I love The Rogues Redeemed Series. Mary Jo's stories glide along at a wonderful pace, her characters are first-rate. She knows how to pull the reader into her stories with action, adventure, and surprises that will leave you gasping and satisfied to the very end. Her love scenes are erotic and sensual without being crude or offensive. I have been reading her books for a long time and will always anticipate the next in her wonderful series. My favorite is The Fallen Angels Series and The Silk Trilogy. I have never read a book by her that I wouldn't recommend. She is one of my go-to authors and the diversity and volume of her work stand the test of time.

Once Dishonored continues the Rogues Redeemed series from veteran romance author Mary Jo Putney. The series features strong, interesting women and a variety of situations. The hero and heroine of this book have both been dishonored in completely different ways. Kendra Douglas finds herself a social pariah after a sensational divorce and loss of her son, none of which was her fault. Lucas Mandeville, now Lord Foxton, has a complex past as a naval officer, military prisoner, assistant to a traveling monk, and bonesetter/healer. He sympathizes with Kendra’s plight and vows to help clear her name with the help of his friends.
Kendra and Lucas were both intriguing characters. Despite their troubles they weren’t bitter. They just wanted to right the wrongs done to them and move on to a better life. Their attraction grew slowly, but steadily. Their relationship was based on genuine affection and respect, with plenty of steamy stuff thrown in. The story had many twists and turns before the HEA.
While this is not Ms. Putney’s strongest book, she is such a solid writer that every story makes a worthwhile read. There were some unusual elements in Once Dishonored: the divorce (a rarity in Regency England), women fencing, Lucas’s power of hands-on healing. The tone of the book was definitely feminist in nature. Overall, a well-written book that keeps the reader���s attention.

And if that wasn’t enough, I found the author’s notes about Regency divorce and POW parole absolutely fascinating. This is the fifth book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title. I really enjoyed this installment and am happy to recommend this title.

Nothing like meeting a new author and becoming addicted, right? How had I not read anything by Mary before ??
Once dishonored brings us a story about injustices, about the search for truth, about friendship, love, loyalty and about redemption too.
Our protagonists will be united by something in common: they have been banned from English society. Her, because she was accused of cheating on her husband and went through a divorce (super scandalous for the time!) And him, for being a navy veteran considered dishonored after escaping from prison where he was.
And if both are considered dishonored, why not join forces, right?
"She took his hand, desperately grateful that he was offering support in a whirlpool of condemnation."
Kendra suffered a lot from the divorce process and before that too, at the hands of her ex-husband. But all she wants now is justice, to have her name cleared in front of society after the lies told by her ex-husband, but mainly, her goal is to get her son back. But at that time, nothing was easy for a woman.
And that's when Lucas, Lord Foxton, appears, willing to help, to face these battles with her, to be the rock she needs to establish herself during these difficulties.
Lucas is extremely cute. Seriously, he is the kindest and herper person that I’ve ever seen. It makes you want to hug him all the time. His past broke my heart, but the way he developed after that is really cool. I love his relationship with medicine and healing within the story, it gave an interesting tone to everything.
The romance between them is smooth, delicate and progresses on each page very naturally.
“ - I had forgotten how wondrous a kiss can be. Though I think it’s you who makes it wondrous.
- I think it’s the two of us together who create wonder.”
Something I loved about this book was seeing the partnership between the characters. We have Lucas with his cousin, uncles and the group of friends he has, but especially Kendra and the group of empowered women who support her. I wanted to be friends with them too, you know?
I connected a lot with the characters, with the story of this couple. I suffered and got angry at the difficult times, I hated the ex-husband with all my strength, I hoped things would work out and I also smiled with each happy part.
“- But how can I say no when you are in my arms and the most alluring woman in the world?
-Then don’t say no.”
If I have anything to criticize, it is that the ending was a little to fast, and that I would like the book to have an epilogue. But for the rest, it's an incredible story. The reading is fluid, the plot holds us all the time and the characters are complete and captivating. I just loved so much and highly recommend it!
Now I just need to read all of Mary's other book series 🤣

The fifth book in the Rogues Redeemed series, Once Dishonored is a story of redemption. Lucas has returned to London after years away. Struggling with a tarnished reputation, Lucas immediately connects to Kyla Douglas, a recently divorced woman whose reputation is even more sullied than Lucas’. When Lucas learns that the cause of her dishonor is her greedy and vicious ex-husband, he determines to help this vulnerable woman regain her reputation, her child, and her life. Will Lucas and Kyla restore their reputations and find a way to be together?
I love the romance in this story! Lucas and Kyla are characters that have gone through so much in their lives, and both struggle to find themselves in a judgmental and rigid society. Shunned and judged by others, Lucas and Kyla feel a connection almost instantly. What develops is a slow-building relationship built on trust and admiration. I love that Lucas and Kyla have such respect for each other. They share their deepest shame and darkest secrets, and it only makes them grow closer to each other. They are unflinching in their resolve to help each other, and their chemistry is fantastic!
I also found it interesting that, even though they are two of the most honorable people in the story, they are disrespected and judged by less honorable people. Kyla fled an abusive relationship and is persecuted for it, and Lucas gave his life for his country and is judged harshly for escaping when he was a prisoner of war. This says a lot more about the conditional society in which they live than is does about Kyla and Lucas.
Further, it frustrated me that women had no voice and no legal rights during this time. Kyla’s husband does some terrible things to her, and there are no ramifications because Kyla has no voice. The men hold all of the power. Putney brings to light important messages about the rights of women and the oppression of women and children, which I appreciated.
Another aspect of the story that I liked was the representation of strong, independent women and forward-thinking men. Lucas and Kyla find themselves embraced by people who accept them and appreciate them. This lovely group of people not only aid Kyla in exposing her ex for the liar he is, but they also provide unwavering support and understanding.
A story laced with dynamic characters and strong messages about gender inequities, Once Dishonored is a great novel for readers who enjoy strong historical romance. I have to admit that I have not read any books by Ms. Putney before, but this book has definitely made me a fan. I have not read any of the previous books in this series and I was easily able to follow along, however with some of the characters arcing from the previous into this novel, I am most definitely going to read up on the previous books.
This novel has it all: historical fiction, friendship, romance, mystery, suspense, and villainous characters that experience well-deserved outcomes. I enjoyed the fact that some characters were inherently good such as the main characters: Kendra and Lucas, his cousin Simon and wife Suzanne. These characters were likeable, realistic, still imperfect, yet had a moral compass. The love, compassion, foregiveness, acceptance, and loyalty between these two couples was enjoyable to read. I can't wait to check out the previous book to read up on Simon and Suzanne's stories. I really enjoyed Kendra. She was stronger then she realized. The friendships and relationships she acquired during the course of this book added to my interest. I truly enjoyed both Kendra and Lucas's complicated past stories, their flaws, and how they were able to finally love and trust again.
I thought the plot was creative, intricate, complex yet interesting. It kept drawing me in. Just when I thought I knew it all and could see where this was going, the author added in just enough to keep things realistic as well as addictive. I enjoyed the pace, the well-thought out dialogue, and I enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters. I also truly enjoyed the ending. It was definitely theatrical in nature, and finishing with quite the bang. These characters truly deserved the wonderful (and rightful) ending that was presented.
If you like regency romance, creative plots, wonderful characters, romance, and great endings, then this book is for you.

A heavy 5 stars. This was such a soul searing story. There was a level of drama that was not over the top, but it pulled the reader in. As a reader, I could feel the helpless anger of the heroine. She lost everything and then, because she was a weak woman, she was divorced and vilified after having survived what most women would not have been able to. The hero is willing to step back and see the big picture and allow her to be justified in her attempt to not only get her name and reputation returned, but get her child back. Her ex-husband had so many people lie in order to cheat her out of her inheritances on the pretext that he had to raise his son and that he was the victim. Not only did he cheat his ex-wife of everything, he also beat the crap out of her during their marriage. This type if book just pulls at my soul because not only did it happen and the perpetrators got away with it, there are people still doing this today. I understand that this is fiction, but it is fiction based on what was historically happening to women. Sometimes a book will transcend time and this is one of them. I recommend this book with a solid 5 stars. Ms. Putney has proven again that she is a relevant author and does not rely on tricks to keep the readers attention. She uses good old fashioned talent and hard work to create a book that will be on many 'keeper' shelves.

The Rogues Redeemed #5
This book resonated and educated all in one story. I loved the idea of two people coming together that had both experienced situations that gave them insight into how the other was thinking and feeling. The two were mature, insightful, caring, and wise. They came together over a cause that gave them both purpose and achieved the goal they set out to achieve…and in the process they found affection, friendship, and abiding love.
What I liked:
* That the story felt “real” and I could see myself within the story
* The writing
* Lucas: a good man with gifts that included more than his ability to heal – I liked him
* Kendra: a good woman done wrong – I loved her strength, empathy, and wisdom
* Learning more about divorce laws of the time
* Learning about the “parole” system during war
* The connection between Lucas & Kendra
* That the villain was dealt with
What I did not like:
* Kendra’s husband
* The laws of the time…
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? I think so
NOTE: This author seems to either wow me or not connect with me. On this book the connection was immediate and strong and I was definitely wowed.

A Fight for Justice
Mary Jo Putney jumps right into Lucas and Kendra’s story. They find a kindred spirit in each other’s loss of reputation, and Lucas promptly offers to help Kendra regain custody of her son. Simon and Suzanne Duval, from Once a Spy, are eager to help. Kendra’s experience is tragic, as she is a woman during a time of patriarchal law in English history. Thankfully Lucas has the rank, persistence, healing knowledge, and friends to help her. Friends such as Lord and Lady Kirkland from Not Quite A Wife. It was nice to see how wonderful these families are doing, and how kind they are to their extended family. Kendra’s bravery and fortitude in her situation is admirable. I was genuinely happy that she finally got her happy ending. Lucas and Kendra’s love is the quiet dependable type, with a strong root of trust and mutual understanding. A great read for Mary Jo Putney fans!

Putney has dishonored herself this time
This book was a mishmash of contrived, rediculous situations, one right after another.
From the start, a disgraced divorcee shows up at a ball? Unescorted? In mourning? Contrived.
Them oit of the blue she, after 9 years, suddenly remembers she had a daughter? Seriously? And this contributed nothing to the story line. Totally superflous.
Laying on of hands cures TB. Yeah, right. Again, contrived.
I loved how, in one chapter, the heroine states her runaway 9 yr old son would have no way to know where she was staying in London, and a few pages later miraculously knocks on the door. Not.
Then the grand finale. A very bad ripoff of Heyer's These Old Shades.
My last Putney. I want a refund.

Poor Kendra is a shunned woman, she is divorced and her husband made her out to be an adulteress. Kendra is stubborn and shows up to party for the ton. While there she almost turns to fell but Lucas saves her.. He is not comfortable with the ton either an after hearing her story, he and his friends decide to assist and while at each getting a chance at happiness, which they both truly deserve
