HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO UMBRA!

It's been several weeks since the events of Nox and Jess has claimed Rem alphahood, while also building an army to take down the evil Queen Mara.

But Mara isn't the only evil doer that Jess has to worry about, there's also Theo, her former penitentiary breakout buddy and resident bad boy, who keeps growing more powerful by the second.

Will Jess and her friends be able to rescue the Sidhe before it's too late? READ TO FIND OUT.

You know that feeling when you read something or watch something and you think "this was written for me"? That's me with this whole series. And I suspect it'll also be me when book four is out, because things seem to be going according to plan in one department.

BUT BEFORE WE GET TO THAT, THEO!!! In my last review I said I hope that he gets all the power because he deserves it. WELL, HE LISTENED TO ME, and he's on his way to becoming the best villain ever. We love to see it.

Sure, hating villains is fine and dandy and almost easy, but loving and hating a villain at the same time is where it's at. Even though I could never hate Theo, but let's pretend that I could.

Just...don't make me choose between Theo and Jess, because that's an impossible choice that I'll have to face in the next book and no I am not ready.

Now Jess, my other baby. I'm sad that she was/is sad, she deserves the world and more, not suffering. Of course I loved her in this book too, I always do. And I love that she's starting to realise that she and Matteo are the correct choice.

BUT WOULD SHE HAVE, IF SOME OF THE EVENTS OF THIS BOOK DIDN'T HAPPEN? I really hope so.

It was a beautiful story, and conclusion, shall we say, to one chapter of her life so that the next one can begin.

Rune, surprisingly, didn't annoy me? He finally accepted his duty and I respect him for it.

Aaaaaand Astra!!! We got her back!!! And she's in l-o-o-o-o-oveeee too. But don't think she lost her edge because of that.

Parts of this book are a teeny bit darker than the other two, and it fits the story. And I may or may not have cried a couple of times. Or was I just cutting onions? Definitely those pesky onions.

No but, some scenes were genuinely so emotional that I HAD to cry. You'll understand when you get to them. Which is what you should do, right now. Off you go to buy the book. Chop chop. NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO START READING THIS SERIES.

*Thank you to the lovely author for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review*

Jess has claimed her position as Alpha of the Rem clan, and now she's left for Umbra, the fae world, to save the Sidhe from Queen Mara. Jess is convinced that the Sidhe is a missing part of herself, that they are one. Rune, who would give his life for Jess, is afraid she's walking to her death. But since he's sworn a blood oath he has no choice but to follow Jess on her journey to the Shadowlands.

It took a while to find my way back into the world and the characters, but when I did I had a hard time putting it down! Since this is the third book (of four) in the series it's hard to write more about what happens, but I can say that I sometimes was surprised by the development. Once I even had to take a break to breathe!

The relationship between Jess and Rune is both swoonworthy and heartbreaking.

“When I knew I would lose you, I forgave you instantly.” A bitter smile edged his lips. “I only wish my anger hadn’t cost me precious time with you.”

I think I know how this will end, but the author might surprise me again!

As a Swede I can't help but think it's kind of cool that Astra, Jess' fae friend, has lived in Sweden!

"I'd been hoping to catch a storm rolling through Sarek's National Park. We were always encouraged to fly in extreme conditions in Gallivare's glamoured nature reserves."

Those who enjoy slightly darker fantasy, with a bit more complex world building and magic system, should definitely check this series out. You have shapeshifters, fae, vampires, mages, witches, gods and goddesses - there's really nothing to miss! (But start with the first book, Luna!)

* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *

***Not a review***

Just wanted to bestow a little note here about what you can expect in Umbra...

While Luna caressed the surface of the Dark Between and Nox waded in, Umbra truly plunges into all its dark complexities. So, be careful not to lose a piece of your soul in the Shadowlands...(just kidding, I’d love it if you bestowed a piece of yourself to the Dark Between!) Enjoy all the shades of Umbra, my fellow traveller.

This book has:

-An iron-willed heroine who trusts her inner wisdom, no matter what.🗡️🐺
-Stories written in the wind and water. 🌬️ 🌊
-And blood magic that tears a soul apart.💀🩸

Trigger and Content Warnings: themes about being brought up in care, mental health, violence, gore, blood depiction (self-harm to get blood for blood oaths), murder, death.

****** WARNING: Umbra continues in the New Adult vein, mostly due to our deliciously dark Enodian (yep, you got it, of course it’s Teddy boy!) *******

OMG I truly enjoyed this book! I’ve been enjoying this series a lot, but this third book in the series is my favorite so far!

This takes place a few months after the previous book. Jess is now trying to build an army to bring down Mara and help the Sidhe. She travels to Umbra with Sunny and Rune to meet with Astra and Skiron to find a way to stop Mara and to get more information about how to help restore the Sidhe and the gods.

I just, wow, I just really loved the pacing of this book, and the turn of events in this book, and the characters! Theo is such a fantastic villain! I mean, he’s delectably charming and you cannot help but fall in love with him and root for him, and yet, I despise what he’s doing 😂 I have such mixed feelings for this boy 🤣 He’s so evil, but do I want to believe that? 😭😂

Then there’s the intense and fraught relationship with Rune and Jess. Gosh, the whole time I’m just so frustrated and I want them to be okay, and I want Rune to be happy, he deserves to be happy!!! And yet, Jess is making dumb decisions, and saying the wrong things and I just kept smacking my head like “get it together girl!”. So, I just really appreciated Rune in this book. His loyalty is just astounding! And by the end of this book and the culmination of their relationship….it upset me and blew my mind all at the same time 🤯 I mean the revelations of so many things that we’ve been wondering about from the beginning, and whether Jess is right or not are finally answered, but there are some great twists in there!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal dark fantasy with shifters, romance and a great villain! Thank you to the author for the free digital copy to read 🥰 4.5/5 ⭐️

I was recently lucky enough to dive back into the world of The Dark Between with an e-ARC of Umbra, and I’m telling you right now, Rae has utterly spoiled us with danger, emotion and rising tension within its pages. It’s *so* good. After the previous two books (Luna and Nox), I wondered what on earth could be next for our heroine, Jess. Jess has put her prison days behind her, and become the Rem Alpha so she can raise an army against Mara, Queen of the Unseelie. The Sidhe must be saved. The Gods have to be restored to their rightful place. And if that means the death of Jess? Well, that’s future Jess’ problem.

I was mesmerised with how much more nuanced and increasingly fragile these characters could become, especially Jess and Rune. On top of that, Rae made sure that there were no easy answers in Umbra. It wasn’t as simple as getting from A to B, or that if they just did one thing everything else would be set to rights. Life doesn’t work that way for anyone I know, and I’m glad it wasn’t a walk in the park for these beautiful characters either.

Okay, so, straight up I’m telling you I’m a *huge* fan of Rae Else’s. Luna burst into my world with all the power of a white wolf, and I’ve been hooked ever since. But to keep a reader this invested in a series, and to just keep upping the emotion and tension? Tell me you wouldn’t also rave about that. I dare you.

Third book in the series and it’s every bit as awesome as the previous two if not a little better!! The world building continues to draw you in months after where the second book left us and it starts with a bang. Jess has claimed Rem Alphahood and is building an army to journey to Umbra to rescue the Sidhe from Mara. It’s an exciting and enthralling read with strong and kick ass characters as secrets and truths are revealed. It’s a fantastic addition to this series and I look forward to the last book.

“One last chapter”..
Was all my mind was saying throughout this book!

I appreciate the story diving right in this time and helping me get lost and tangled in their lives again. It was exciting and heart wrenching the whole ride. I felt so much anguish and intensity to the feelings between Rune and Jess.

As the series comes closer to it’s end, things are speeding up and tying loose ends. I love how even with months apart from the book before, I am able to just get back in the tale and immerse myself in the book. A lot of things are explained in this book and it grates at my heart. The loss. The love. Those little pockets of sunshine between friends. A really good installment to the series!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Umbra is the third book in The Dark Between Series. Jess has claimed Rem Alphahood and journeys to Umbra to rescue the Sidhe from Mara.

My Review of Luna | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My Review of Nox | ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I have to be completely honest; I had a hard time remembering what happened in the second book just before this one. Usually, some sort of recap is given at the beginning of sequel books to remind readers what happened and another explanation of some terms etc. I kind of missed that at the beginning of this book, which made the start a bit slow, as I had to keep looking things up to understand what the characters were going on about. Whereas the information at the beginning of book two was too much at once, here it was too little.

The characters are going on a journey to Umbra, which I would’ve liked more information on and a bit more of a description and worldbuilding to clearly picture what this world is like. On the other hand, it was very easy to follow along the journey and what was happening.

There are still different POV’s when reading this book, but not as much as in the second and it didn’t disrupt the flow as it did in that book. Despite the changes, the story was easy to follow along and the changes in POV were really complementary and happened at good places in the story.

The characters, shined a bit more in this book. Because the little POV changes and the straightforward storyline, the characters really got to shine and show their growth. Whereas Jess grew a lot in Nox, Rune really grew in this book, which I really liked. Jess herself grows a bit as well, but not as much. It was a pity Matteo wasn’t as present in this book though, because I’m a fan of him haha. Also, the way Theo steadily grows into his villain role makes me curious to see what’ll happen in the fourth book!

Because Matteo wasn’t as present, the romance wasn’t as present as well. In Nox, (if I remember correctly) Jess started to feel for him, which I really like because I like them as a couple. In this book though, it seemed like a love triangle was once again present, which I wasn’t really a fan of.

The plot itself didn’t really have the twists and turns book two did, but I didn’t really miss that. Sometimes, it did feel as if what was happening was a bit to convenient. With the way this book ended the book did really feel like an introduction to what’ll happen in the fourth book. Everything that happened in this book was necessary for the story to continue, but it felt a bit drawn out. It felt a bit as if half of what happened in this book was sort of a filler to get to the ending.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It could’ve been shorter that it was, but it really makes me curious to see what’ll happen in the fourth book. This book made me want to continue this series!

It's a "just one more chapter!" kind of book!

I have to start this review off by saying, I adore this book, I adore this series, I adore Jess, and I especially adore Rae Else's writing style. The way she weaves a story and draws me in is something I've not encountered from an author in a really long time, and the more books I read from her the higher she climbs on my favourite author list.

Having said that, Umbra left me torn. Not in a bad way, not at all, but this installment of the series pulled my heart in half a dozen directions and left it a little battered, much like Jess.

Umbra also felt like a very short book. It's actually not, but I devoured it so fast, in one sitting, that I finished and instantly wanted more.

All of these are good things for the book, and bad things for me as the reader! I want to wrap Jess in a hug after the trials she's gone through in Umbra, and that's also part of the problem with the illusion of this book not having enough content. By the end of Umbra, Jess is battered, bruised, and left a little adrift, even while surrounded by her friends, and I want to know how she overcomes the fallout from the challenges she faced in this book.

I, basically, want the final book in the series now. Very impatient and ungenerous of me, but as with Luna and Nox, the author has left me simultaneously satisfied and craving more.

It was wonderful to see Astra again! I missed her in Nox, and Theo's development from Luna to now is shocking in all the best ways. Rune's transformation is the most startling, and yet even as you read about the changes he goes through it feels right for his character. And we see more of Matteo, and I can't put into words how much more of him I hope to see in the final installment of this series!

All in all, another absolutely fantastic addition to this addictive series. Thank you to Rae Else for providing me with a free copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

"Umbra" is such a beautiful piece of art that I'm having trouble putting words to paper. Rae Else is truly a genius. While this is still Jess' tale, I love how Rae tells the story from so many perspectives. I feel like I get a fuller story without getting lost. Rae switches between characters flawlessly. The characters are so vivid, so full of life. The love, losses and sacrifices that Jess and Rune experience are enough to break your heart. Be forewarned, I cried throughout several chapters.
