I almost never read single issues but I think anyone who has read Saga would understand why I couldn't wait for the TP to come out.
So, I read it.
I'm not as blown away as I hoped but this is still a very good story.
I'm not sure what to say except that I'll still read this series when the next volume hits shelves eventually.

Finally! The excruciating wait after that tragic ending of the previous volume is over. (Oh shut up. I know my wait was only a month while the rest of you waited for THREE years, but it was an EXCRUCIATING month).

For our protagonists (well, those who are still alive) it’s coincidentally also been three years, and over those years Hazel has become exponentially cuter, if that’s even possible.

And everything is back. The wonderful narration of older Hazel, the irreverent snarky humor interspersed with poignantly heartbreaking decidedly serious moments, the interplay between brutality of the world and kindness of this makeshift family that weathered all those storms with painful consequences, entire panels of Blue language (which now I know is Esperanto, and so my Google Translate is getting a workout), and Hazel’s little “brobot” a.k.a. little traumatized Squire.

And that artwork is gorgeous as ever.

Aaaahhhhh….that was wonderful. I love when these stories pull back a bit to let us see a few warm moments before all hell breaks loose.

I missed you, guys. See you in a month.

Oh, and if anyone gets a copy of “Assassins of Sadness” by Fartbox, please send me a link.

5 stars because I’m incapable of rating this any less, ever. But I never promised to be objective.

Saga is BACK, friends! And I couldn't be more excited. It's been a long three years without this periodic burst of violence and sheer joy to keep me page-turning when I needed an intelligent and complex yet fully fun pick-me-up. I was worried going into this that I should have done a re-read of the whole series, but the way this drops back into the story made me feel like I wasn't forgetting anything key. I still will do that re-read, don't you worry.

To commemorate the 3 year gap since Saga last left us gutted as we witnessed some very key characters get brutally murdered (my personal favorite is gone, alas), the world of Saga has also jumped 3 years in time. Hazel is now running the streets on her own and getting herself in and out of trouble. I'm really excited to see that Hazel is about to become a lot more active participant in the story now. As usual, the war is going on, people are getting fucked up in gloriously illustrated sci-fi violence and abrupt death is always just a frame or two away. I love Saga, you never feel safe. Vaughan would probably kill the reader if it would make for a good plot twist.

Anyways, this one doesn't advance the plot terribly much other than recentering where we are now in the timeline, like slowly stepping into a swimming pool. But big things seem about to happen. Alana is still doing random schemes as one would expect, and we get to see some characters we haven't seen in a long time. The dynamic is going to be different without two major players but I think Hazel becoming a larger role is going to help carry where they left off. It seems it has been worth the wait. Also if you were holding out hope that one character might not be dead, Vaughan makes sure you know pretty definitively that they are indeed super dead. But I guess at least they...sort of get shown again? If you haven't read Saga, literally stop what you are doing and join in. Just pure bliss. Also violence. And death. And being real shocked. But you'll like it, I swear!

Five stars because how could I dare not with this excitement coursing through me having literally just finished it.

Saga is BACK!!!

description

Be ready for many adorable Hazel moments, the usual weird and the funny, some rather cruel panels that might cause eye-leak and a surprise at the end. Don't skip the message by BKV on the last page!

Looks as good as ever and still has its very distinct voice. After all those years it's a bit like coming home.

And we're back!

I can't even begin to describe how happy I am to be reading Saga again. After that last one BROKE me, I had to grieve. Hard. For years. And now it HAS been years, and now I'm getting ready to see, in probably only a few more issues, how I can be BROKEN AGAIN.

Ahem.

I'm not bitter. I'm enthusiastic. Because I love these people. Even the SDFKWNXKVJSAF that ASDFAWEANAS my ASDFAFNWQWES.

Ahem.

And it feels new again. Full of hope. Even if it's also a bit too close to real life.

It's also fantastic.

Why am I crying? You're crying!

5 SAGA is back brobot STARS

"This is how an idea survives. It grows and it changes... often far beyond the intentions of its creators."

Well, this was ... short. *lol* Yes, yes, I know this is just an issue, not an entire volume (which I'm usually reading). Still, after all this time, I wanted MORE.

Hazel is back and older - just like in the real world, 3 years have passed since youknowwhat ... *twitchy eyelid* ... making the reading experience a bit more meta than it already was.
Hazel, her mother, the tree ship, Squire and a new friend (see cover) are still running from place to place, trying to stay ahead of Will (aka the fuck turd who did youknowwhat *twitchy eyelid*).
The galaxy is still fucked up with the war between the Moon Wreath and Landfall, with some humans and other beings thinking it's necessary or even a good idea to add another layer of hatred. *sighs*

Not too much happens here other than the readers beign told that Hazel is alive, her brother is having nightmare and Marco's ex-fiancée is still a fucking bitch. Literally. Oh, but at least we got some more Lying Cat.

The art is great as ever (see evidence below), I'm just sad we didn't get more substance but like I said, that's because I'm used to whole volumes. We DID get some background info on how the war is going, which I bet is gonna be of importance soon.

A nice addition was BKV's letter at the end of this issue and his comment not only on the pandemic and what everyone has been up to, but also on how much story is still to come if interest keeps being this high (which I bet it will be). He said for years to come and I can only hope for his own personal safety that he doesn't mean because they'll take another break like this past one. *sharpens favorite knife*

So, after three years, just like that, we are back. Issue number #54, oh, the whole volume nine, completely gutted us, an historic moment in the history of comics, and I have just reread all of the volumes when I saw the first two issues are already out!

Thanks to Karen for posting this interview with Brian Vaughn and Fiona Staples, the perfect intro to what is the second half of Saga (!), yes, another planned out 54 issues!

https://ew.com/books/exclusive-saga-c...

After reading that, I sat down and did what I did for the first 54 issues, I set everything aside and I read this in one sitting, a larger first issue than most comics issues. And I still won't say what happened in volume nine, but three years have passed, and Hazel is just turning ten. New characters enter in, as expected, change is ever=present, we are on yet another planet, and we are still struggling to survive.

Hmm, what can I say? At the end of volume nine Hazel tells us she is getting another brother, and I guess it is okay to say that happens, though as in most of the tale, it is an unusual turn of events that brigs this about. And they are all still processing the events of volume nine. I will say that in the interview Staples and Vaughn make it clear that the series will remain with a focus on redefining and deepening the notion of family, and also (since it is a time of endless war between Wreath and Landfall), it is also about the ever-presence of violence and the unavoidable consequences of violence for everyone.

Vaughn says that the series, that started for them in 2011, has been a way fo processing the world. And in the process, they both have growing families, their own sagas, so their lives and the wider world will be present in the series, as it always has been, and as much great art has been and will be.

It has been such a long wait, but it's so nice to be home!

There's some goofiness, some absolute heartbreak, gorgeous art, and acts that could absolutely be described as hijinks. More importantly it feels like Saga - that hiatus has done nothing to lessen the connection between characters, or between characters and reader. I'm definitely wanting to do a reread now, but we're back on a regular schedule. Hurrah!

3.5 stars.

“This is how an idea survives. It grows and it changes, often far beyond the intentions of its creators. And if a “good” idea is one that outlives the people who made it, then I guess I was halfway to being one.”

After many years of torturous wait, a terrible cliffhanger, and a bit of lost hope to ever see this story return, I can sing victory with this wonderful, thrilling, and fitting welcome back issue.

One of the things that made me most nervous was the idea that the long interlude would have made my familiarity and love for the story fade. I was nervous I wouldn't feel the same reading this new installment. Well, I shouldn't have worried, because the way Vaughan handled the story was the perfect reintroduction and adjustment period I could have asked for.

Truly, this issue feels completely different than how everything felt the last volume we saw. And that fits the story so incredibly well that it was nothing but a blessing.

Vaughan was perfectly aware, I believe, that it was going to be a bit of a shakeup to return to this world, and was kind enough to make it the most organic and seamless way that he could have possibly done it while at the same time building up the new stakes and dynamics and reminding us of all the reasons we fell in love with the characters in the first place. Quite a fit considering the shortness of the format.

I can see the potential that the story carries between itself already and that excites me, all the prospects, and I can say that I am quite intrigued to see where Hazel goes now and how the whole world develops more.

The tiny bits we saw on this issue were brilliant already.

“When folks talk about “survival of the fittest,” they’re really just describing dumb luck. And I was the luckiest girl ever born. Because the two people who made me had very little in common with each other. And while that kind of collaboration can often end in disaster, every once in a while, the result is more than the sum of its parts.”

Okay, that is certainly a way to be dropped on this story once again.

I'm quite liking this reintroduction.

Oh my god, oh my god, OH MY GOD!!!!!

I was NOT expecting this to happen. To be honest, at this point I had almost lost all faith that I would ever get to read more of this story. So, when I saw that this issue had been published I thought it was a joke. It wasn't until I saw it with my own two eyes that I finally believed it.

At this point, I'm not even sure of how I'll feel when I read this. It's been so long.

Hopefully, I can get right back into the feelings and love I had for the story and feel like no time has passed. Though I suppose that'll depend heavily on Vaughan as much as anything else.

Whatever the case, I am BEYOND excited to be able to dive back into this world. I had missed it.

After the long hiatus, I’m glad they started back up with a double sized issue. I was great to be dropped back into the world that is Saga. After the events of the ending of issue #54, Hazel’s family is trying to make due. Also get reminded of the end of 54 when I saw the Will and what he had with him. I definitely started cussing him out. Hazel is still precious as ever and I forgot Squire was still with them. Plus of course Fiona’s art is still simply amazing. I’ll probably stop here and wait for the trade……maybe.

I opened Hoopla this morning with every intention of sucking down a few more pages of Hush.

That hasn't happened yet.

Am I allowed to say I've missed this series
when technically I've only waited a year
and also just did a full series reread in December

Shut up, yes I can.

SO pleased to have these characters back again.
MY CATTT <33

This was a great return after Vaughan and Staples's longer-than-anticipated intermission. Do we know very much yet? Nah. But if memory serves, any time newer characters have been introduced it takes a few issues to get to know them. So I'm very excited (and I would be lying if I said I wasn't also HELLA apprehensive).

I am so, so happy for this to be back! Vaughan's note to us at the end was heartwarming and made me so excited for the next issue!

These comics are so good. Yes, the story is fantastic, the art is beyond reproach and unlike anything else out there, even the lettering is phenomenal, but none of that is what makes these important. Entertaining, yes, but what makes them relevant is the way Vaughan tells a story that shows readers that there is a place for everyone. Everyone is strange, no one fits in everywhere, and as I read earlier today, everyone has to be a little weird to be normal, because if you were just normal you would be a little weird. This. This right here is what Vaughan is telling us.

Keep on, keeping on. Grieving. Selling formula. Being a slinky truthsayer. Having sex. Just keep on.

OMGOMGOMGOMG. I mean, Saga easily tops the list when it comes to a long-ass hiatus but here we are, finally. I just want to say how easy it is to sink back into this world.

Ok, Saga is back and I mean it's BACK! It feels familiar and wonderful while still having it's usual supply of surprises and twists. I'm so grateful they did a double sized first issue back because it really lets you get both feet back into the world and the lives of these characters.
It's already exhilarating and heartbreaking. I am going to read it again today and probably again tomorrow to try and process everything BKV has laid out on the table, because he really hit the ground running. I don't need to spend any time coming up with ways to praise Fiona Staples because she hasn't missed a beat. It's gorgeous and it's otherworldly and it's still familiar and satisfying. No surprises, she's still a giant in her field.

This is a tremendous way to reenter this world and pick up the story in a new time and place. It already has momentum and I'm so glad we only have to wait a month to get the next installment.

After a very long hiatus by the authors, the story has moved on by three years as well. I was back in the world of Saga immediately, even though I haven‘t re-read any of the previous volumes. Welcome back, Saga!

Single issues are short, although this one is longer than most with 47 pages. So saying more without spoiling anything is tricky. Good so far. Looking forward to the next one in about 4 weeks.

Content warning: rating M for Mature, aka one graphic, gratuitous sex scene. Which I could have done without.

PS: yes, the image error is annoying. No idea. It worked right after posting.

PSS: I am sure the cover art by Fiona Staples for that new Fartbox album is gorgeous… and no, I never knew that the blue text is Esperanto.

The story did nothing for me. Gwen is still awful. The Will can go downtown like a champ. Lying cat is fabulous. It was wonderful to see an older Hazel. And Fiona's artwork is as always, extraordinary.
