Took me a while to read this. I kept setting it aside. It's historical fiction and maybe suffered in translation. Just didn't feel like Pasternak, or Khrushchev, or the rest of the players really spoke like this in real life. Read it and judge for yourself. I did like the comparison of Paris and Leningrad's responses to German invasion: on city capitulated and the other fought despite horrific losses. Surrender and resistance symbols throughout the book. It just might read better in Russian than translation. Read it and judge for yourselves.
