Smugglers Cove #1

Every Step of the Way

Rate this book
When Jake Davis arrives home, he is expecting to be met by a sea of familiar faces-not Cammie Anderson's glare and two middle fingers. She's a newcomer in town, and Jake…well, he's as close to Smuggler's Cove royalty as one can be.

Jake is confident in his ability to capture the attention of any woman, but Cammie couldn't be further from interested. She is convinced her fiery personality will ward off unwanted attention, but will her walls withstand the strength of Hurricane Jake?

The most impulsive decision Cammie ever made was moving to Smuggler's Cove to become a kayak tour guide. She quit her job, left her cheating ex, and moved to the tiny, remote town in Alaska.

After falling in love with the adventure, the pristine landscape, and the loveable, quirky characters who seem to brighten even the dreariest of days, she ran into-or was nearly run over by-Jake Davis, the man who was at the helm of Cammie's near-death experience.

Cammie has learned the hard way that the people we think we need most in life are the ones who ultimately disappoint us. No matter how hard Jake Davis tries to prove her wrong, she's determined to not let history repeat itself.

But one thing is for certain. Jake Davis is a storm that never ends.

cammie moved to smuggler’s cove after she decided she was done with life being an ass to her. jake davis is back home to be with his mom, and he’s like royalty in the small town. their attraction is instant and jake wants to get to know cammie better, but she’s convinced she’s not gonna let history repeat itself.

this book made me realize how much i love small town romances and how little of them i read! the feeling of familiarity and closeness makes these books a delight. i loved that cammie moved to smuggler’s cove to let herself live a more peaceful life after everything, but i also love that she gave herself the opportunity to meet someone new and trust again. learning to love after going through what cammie did demonstrates how strong and kind-hearted she is. i love love love second chances at love. jake was adorable! he gave cammie the time and space she needed and i swear my heart was super full. sweet heroes are the best!

overall, the book was sweet, fast-paced (appreciated) and i could totally picture all the scenery through anna’s words. i also loved hilary and ryan! please! they’re the best friends cammie and jake could have. amazing debut novel!

‘Every Step Of The Way’ is the incredible debut novel by Anna Lindgren. This book is fresh, it is original, and the fictional setting of Smuggler’s Cove is to die for. I want to pack my bags and go there for it has a real sense of small town community which reeled me in from the onset.

Cassie and Jake are two people trying to navigate through past hurts and connect with one another. Cassie is complex, she has deep rooted fears and long-lasting pains, but Jake is the book boyfriend who has the ability to disarm her. He is handsome, patient, and is completely swoon-worthy!

This book took me on a real visual journey. I could picture it all! It felt pretty, it felt picturesque and it really made me connect with not only the setting but the fictional characters inhabiting it. You really get to know these people, and you fall in love with each and every one.

Not only was I drawn to Cassie and Jake, but Hilary and Ryan their best friends were equally as intriguing, and I cannot wait to see where Lindgren takes their story.

This book is beautiful, it’s special, and provided me with a romantic feel I’ve not encountered for a long time in some of my reads. I could sense it was written out of love, and a real want to deliver a good story to a romance reader such as myself, and the effort and care put into each scene made it crafted to perfection. I felt I was ironically with these people ‘Every Step Of The Way!’

I want to live in Smuggler’s Cove, there’s just no doubt about it! I loved its vibes and the community feel, and it offered me as a reader a sense of calm and escapism which you can tell is what the heroine Cassie needed and wanted when she moved there.

I’d recommend this to all readers who love small town romances, and who love that real feel good factor zing you get from reading an amazingly well-written book. It has drama, it has heartfelt moments which give you those chills and make you obsessed, but it also has that romance which you cannot help but crave.

Amazing read and worth each and every star! Anna you are amazing and I cannot wait to see where you take this series.

I love this story so much, it's so beautifully written in terms of the characters and the setting. Its so detailed it's like I'm actually there in the picturesque town with them and I would kill to live there!

The story follows Jake and Cammie as they work to overcome their insecurities and past hurts. I like that they have flaws, it makes them so relatable and you root for them all the more because you're invested in their journey, the payoff is even sweeter. It's emotional, funny, sweet and just perfect.

I can't wait to read more by this author based on this tremendous debut and if you're looking for a small town, heart warming romance then this is the one for you!

This book was seriously cute and YES I AM CRYING!! I wanted to shake Cammie so many times and I rooted for Jake like a football fan during the super bowl. 😂 While I loved the book, I do wish it was a little longer and that some of the resolutions hadn’t occurred so quickly. Aside from that, I think I want to go to Alaska immediately?!

I had the honor and the privilege of being both a beta and an ARC reader for Anna Lindgren's debut romance novel and she absolutely does not disappoint.

The quaint town of Smuggler's Cove immediately stands out with its calm serenity and you understand why Cammie fled her old life to start again in the little town. At the heart of her character, Cammie is vulnerable, afraid to lose her heart again after being cheated on and cast aside by the man she thought she could count on--and also dealing with other demons from her past. But she's also not afraid to be feisty, to stand up for what she believes in and her sisterhood with Hilary, her roommate and former college classmate is probably one of the more understated relationships in the book that I really look forward to reading more about.

Her first encounter with Jake, Smuggler's Cove's recently returned prodigal son (with middle fingers and nearly capsized kayaks), belies that inner fire and sets the tone for the chemistry that the two of them have. Recently returned home to take care of family, Jake is immediately taken with Cammie and wants to know more about her, pushing beyond her fiery exterior.

What follows is a battle of wills as Cammie tries hard to resist her growing feelings and Jake pushes just as hard to show her that he's not going to hurt her. Both of them come to terms with letting go of their pasts and realize that taking a chance on each other is better than the lifetime of regrets that will come if they just give up. It's a raw, realistic and relatable love story that has me excited to see where Anna will take the characters next.

This was such a great debut from author Anna Lindgren! I simply adored reading Cammie and Jake's story and I will definitely be looking forward to more from this author.

Every Step of the Way is set in a small town, Smuggler's Cove, in Alaska and told in alternating views from Cammie and Jake. The story took us through the first time they met and how their relationship grew. Cammie has some trust issues from her past to sort through and Jake is so patient and kind throughout the book. The ending had me all giddy and smiling! Definitely a book you should pick up when you're in the mood for a beautiful setting and a sweet love story. You may also feel the need to travel to Alaska as soon as possible after reading this book because Anna Lindgren does a phenomenal job of describing the scenery and views Cammie and Jake are seeing throughout the book. You won't regret picking this one up, but you will definitely be hooked on Smuggler's Cove afterwards!

A special thanks to the author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Cammie and her best friend Hilary work for a kayak tour company by day and by night, they work in the local watering hole. Cammie's left her tech job in Denver after breaking up with her cheating boyfriend and has landed in Smuggler's Bay, Alaska to try and find a new home. Not quite feeling like one of the locals, she has trust issues and is lacking direction in what type of life she wants to live.
Jake walks into Cammie's life at the most inopportune time. He falls hard fast, but she's not ready. Good thing Jake's patient and is willing to play the long game to win her affection. Will Jake's love be enough to help Cammie find the belonging she's been searching for?

The true highlight of this book was the idyllic Alaskan setting. The scenery, the wildlife, the outdoor adventure was just breathtaking. It made me want to hop on a plane immediately to find this small Alaskan town. This story just whisks you away.

Both Jake and Cammie are adorable and I loved their love story. Jake knows all the right things to say to comfort Cammie's fears. They are both dealing with the pain of losing a parent and through their relationship, the pair begins to heal together. Their friends to lovers story had fireworks and amazing chemistry.

I also loved Cammie's bestie Hilary and can't wait to read her and Ryan's story, which comes out this summer!

Hands down 5 stars!! My heart ....it’s still coming back from happpy romance land because this book took it to new heights. This love story is everything from dealing with the past to allowing your present to shape your future. Jake is sweet and patient. His love for Anna makes my heart swell with love love love! Anyone else get that chest feeling when you can feel the love and emotion jump out of the pages??

And the ending was so very perfect. Exactly how this romantic comedy should have ended. There’s some steamy steam, but not crazy dirty. Which is fine.

I am so honored to get the chance to read an ARC of this! And I can’t wait for the next book already!!

What can I say about this amazing book?!?

Come for the vivid descriptions of beautiful coastal Alaska. Anna does a perfect job describing the beauty in such detail, it made me want to get there to visit (or move there as Cammie does in the book!) as soon as possible!

Stay for the story. Stay for Cammie and Jake's chemistry, Jake's patience, Cammie's independence. Stay for the robust group of supporting characters - every person was great in their own way and I even loved to hate the awful jealous character who tries to mess everything up. Stay for the community of Smuggler's Cove and a group of people painted so vividly that it made me want that in my own life. Stay for a story so good, so gripping, so well told that I read this book in one evening and ended up sobbing when Cammie and Jake have some troubles and maybe they weren't going to make it.

This book is truly phenomenal. Huge props to Anna, a debut author! And I have to say how excited I was to get to the end of the book and find out there is more to come! I can't wait to read Hilary and Ryan's story next and hope to get to keep reading about Smuggler's Cove for years to come.

Ever since moving to Smuggler’s Cove, Alaska, Cammie has been content with the solace she’s found. Her life is calm and steady, that is, until a large fishing boat nearly knocks her clear off her kayak. The last thing she expected when flogging the vessel with her two middle fingers was to gain the attention of town-native, Jake, the man who’s laughing at her assertive aggression while meandering away.

Jake hasn’t been home to Smuggler’s Cove in years, but when his mother’s health took a nosedive, he came running. But now, he has a new mission: figure out who this devilish woman is who flipped him the bird—twice. But he soon learns that Cammie doesn’t trust easily, that she’s afraid of getting hurt. And if Jake wants to tear down her walls, he’ll have to make her realize that he’s not the type of man she assumes he is.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s fast-paced, sweet and steamy, and full of strained emotions that pull in all directions—it makes you laugh, shake your head, and get that hoarse, emotional feeling in your throat. The characters are beautifully and emotionally flawed, and are easily lovable. I loved Cammie’s wit and snarkiness paired with Jake’s determination and free spirit. They’re characters that swivel their way into your heart and pinch it a little, just to make sure you’re feeling their effect.

I think everybody has small pieces of both Cammie and Jake within them—we want to love freely and fully like Jake, but struggle with sharing trust, like Cammie. We all just need to find a middle ground, somewhere where we feel safe to be the critically flawed people we are.

After reading this book, I have major traveller’s FOMO. I definitely want to go to Alaska someday!

This book was a wonderful escape to an area of Alaska called Smuggler’s Cove.
Cammie moved here a year ago and lives with her best friend from college now. She has had a very rough and untrusting life. Her father left her when she was very young. Then, later in life, she discovers her live in boyfriend of two years has been cheating on her for sometime. That’s when she made the move and decided she must not be worth loving and sticking around for.
Jake has recently moved back to Smuggler’s Cove to take care of his mother. He’s happy to be back, even more so when he meets the new beauty with quite a temper. He’s always believed in soulmates and after meeting Cammie this feeling intensifies. He’s determined to prove to her that if someone truly loves you, they will stay and weather all the storms.
I truly enjoyed witnessing them come to the realization that they were the missing piece to each other’s puzzle.
I look forward to reading about Hilary and Ryan in the next book of this series. I received an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Every Step of the Way is this amazing small town romance that everyone needs to read!

Cammie is this sweet woman that is trying to work through her past relationship and issues surrounding her father. She has no idea how to trust her feelings and has to figure it out quickly or lose the first person she’s really loved.

Jake returned to his hometown in order to take care of his mom. He sees Cammie as soon as he comes back to town and immediately knows that he needs to meet her. He chases after everything he wants and knows that you don’t give up when times are tough.

The fictional town of Smuggler’s Cove is so picturesque. As you read you can imagine the town and the beautiful nature surrounding it. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I am in love with Smuggler’s Cove and would be on the first flight to Alaska if it was real.

You HAVE to go get your copy of this book! I finished it in 24 hours and can’t wait to see where Anna takes the next book in the series. Head to Amazon or KU to get your copy today!

Every Step of the Way was such a refreshing palate cleanser. I could not put it down! I fully recommend this if you want a comfort book that explores the beauty of its environment (who doesn't want a book that takes place in Alaska?!)
I loved watching the pure and beautiful relationship between Cammie and Jake developing. There was natural and fun dialogue with true laugh out loud moments. Of course, you can't have a true romance book without stomach dropping moments of dread (in the best possible way! Haha) and the ones in this book were perfect!
I never really give much thought to a title, but this one fit the book so perfectly that I had to give it a shoutout!
Had a beautiful conclusion that perfectly wrapped up the book and left me satisfied. I can't wait for the next book! I'm not ready to leave Smuggler's Cove!

What a great debut novel! I loved this cute small town romance, and it made me want to book the first flight to Alaska to visit. The way the scenery was described was so beautiful, I need to see it for myself one day! Not to mention I’m going to need a kayak tour after reading this book. Jake and Cammie were the couple I needed to read about right now, and the epilogue was everything. I’m really looking forward to the series continuing with Ryan and Hilary. I loved those two side characters in the book! I am already looking forward to a re-read of this one and the next book in the series!

I need to take another trip to Alaska ASAP!

I loved everything about this book! I read #2, Just Say It, first (as an ARC) and loved it so much that I had to hurry and read #1 to get all of the story. Everything I loved in #2 I loved in #1, too! The picturesque Alaskan setting, the quaint small town, the charming and supportive friends and townspeople, the difficult backstories, the overwhelming love story - it is all wonderful! Lindgren has such a magical way of describing the aspects of Alaskan living that make everyone fall in love with it, like only one who knows and loves Alaska can do. I literally had physical reactions to parts of this book as my mouth was watering over descriptions of the scrumptious Alaskan seafood, my heart was pounding as I pictured and experienced great adventures with the characters, my heart ached and tears leaked out as I felt Cammie’s pain of loss and fear, and my heart raced and I couldn’t hold back a grin as the characters let themselves fall in love. Such a great reading experience! I didn’t want to put the book down.

The story focuses on Cammie who is a transplant to Smuggler’s Cove. She is living with her best friend from college, Hilary, after leaving her home of Denver and a cheating ex boyfriend. She meets Jake soon upon his return to Smuggler’s Cove. He grew up there with Hilary and Ryan, but has been away for school and work and moved back because his mom is ill. Although Cammie and Jake try to fight against their pull towards each other, it is obvious that they could have something special. Too bad Cammie can’t get past the ways she has been hurt earlier in her life. It is so painful and frustrating to see her fight so hard to push away what could be so good in her life. Ugh! But the issues are explained so well. I felt a deep connection with Cammie’s pain, as well as with the hope for something better. I loved Cammie and Jake together. The relationship happens quickly and isn’t very realistic, but I liked it anyway.

I loved the story and connected with it so much that I’m rounding up to 5⭐️! Smugglers Cove is my new favorite small town romance location - and I need more stories from here! But I will say this first attempt has some editing issues that I had to overlook. It might not be 5⭐️ outstanding literature, but it’s a pretty stellar romcom that gave me all the feels. I think #2 is cleaner and I have no doubt this author will continue to produce great work. I can’t wait for #3!

After getting cheated on, Cammie packs her bags and moves to Alaska and joins her college best friend, taking a job as a guide on kayak adventures. When Jake comes back home to take care of his mother, he meets the newcomer, and he knows she's the one, but Cammie has been burned before and she's determined to not let history repeat itself.
🐝
This book had so much potential. I loved the synopsis and the main story line was so good. However the execution fell flat for me. Cammie's past is really tragic, and the way the author brought it into the story was clumsy at best, triggering at worse. Unfortunately, I didn't find any trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, or on the Goodreads' description page. One of my biggest pet peeves in romance, is the evil other woman: and this one was everything I dislike about this cliched character. I understand jealousy, pettiness and general meanness, but there's limits and laughing about a parent's suicide is it. By the end of the book I did root for the characters, but whenever they talked to each other it was either for a uncommunicative fight or what felt like romantic one-liners. My absolute favourite character was Jake's mom. She was an absolute blast, I loved reading the scenes she was in, and the ones she orchestrated for the two love birds.

🏔I love & devour small town romances. And this one happens to be a cherry on top because it's set in Alaska.

This book was an absolute delight to read!
I loved Cammie & Jake together.

🛶Cammie was fearless, strong & a kind hearted human who learns to love & accept love once again. She took a second chance with her heart, and it turned out to be the best decision ever.

🛶Jake was an ideal book boyfriend. A sweet, understanding & patient guy. The fact the he was so calm & patient with Cammie & her decisions, made him more lovable.

🏔There's something about small town romances, the closeness, the proximity, the openess & genuine relationships that make you feel that you're witnessing the love story in live.

🏔A Beautiful & Uplifting story with an even satisfying Epilogue.
The Epilogue had me grinning like a fool even long after the book was over. ( thank you so much for that).

🗻@justlikefrozen did an absolute amazing job describing the wilderness of Alaska.
The scenery, the outdoor-sy views, the adventures, the wildlife & backdrops were breathtaking & to die for.
It had been so long since I read an Alaskan based romance.❤

Cammie & Jake ❤️

🛶Cammie moved to Alaska to be closer to her college roommate Hillary. They work together as kayak guides and bartend in the only local eating spot, the Fish House at night. She’s new in town but it feels more like home than home ever did.

🛶When ranger Jake moves back to town to be closer to his ailing mom, he spots Cammie and is smitten. He feels like she’s the complementary magnet he’s been searching for. Can the commitment shy newcomer stay long enough for them to make it work?

✏️Anna Lundgren is a new to me author. I enjoyed the setting of this sweet story, and could really picture the kayaking, waterfalls and beautiful breaching humpback whales in the ocean. I was rooting for Cammie and Jake to figure out their feelings for each other. Loved that his mom had met her first and had a special connection.

I would have rated a 3.5 if given the half option.

Pros: I love the Alaskan setting, the author's description of the scenery and coastal small town. There is not an abundance of books set in Alaska so I hope the author continues with more stories there and not just the stereotypical couple trapped in cabin during an Alaskan snowstorm.

Cons: There were a few editing issues, main character being described as gray and blue eyes, some phrases or grammar items that may have been overlooked. Overall, they were pretty minor but were enough that it caught my eye and docked the rating a bit. I think the more books written, the more this will improve.

Will definitely read the author again to continue this series.

I read this first book of the Smugglers Cove series in anticipation of the second book in the series. I would classify this as a New Adult romance. The characters are older than YA, but definitely still have some growing up to do. That said, the relationship angst and drama in this one was both realistic and relatable- it flashed me back to my early 20's and made me grateful that I am a little more grounded these days (hopefully!).

Cammie and Jake feel an almost immediate attraction and Cammie fights it every step of the way. she has some personal demons to battle before she can allow herself to even be open to a relationship. Regardless, Jake is smitten and pursues her with determination.

I loved the location (Alaska) and am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Oh. My. Lord.

This book. This book y'all.

I can't handle what a joy this book was to read. I was SO frustrated with Cammie at the beginning, like actually yelling at the pages because she wasn't listening to me, but by the end I was SQUEALING.....I may have cried a little before the squealing but squeal I did.

I love the found family, the friendships, the small town and close knit community.

Jake is an absolute gem, the stuff book boyfriend dreams are made of 😍❤️‍🔥

I love that this book had me invested in all the characters (except Samantha she can go suck an egg) there's so much more to it than just the romance between Jake and Cammie.

Why did I wait so long to read this?! Don't be like me, get this book and read it ASAP, don't let it sit on your TBR pile.

Great Easy Reading Book

Every Step of the Way written by Anna Lindgren takes place in Smuggler’s Cove a small mountainside village in Alaska.
Cami relocates here to become a kayak guide + moves in with Hillary. She gets along with most everyone. The town’s people are as colorful as the buildings. Cami falls for Jake + he for Cami but it’s an unsteady ride because of her history.
A few other main characters are Hillary + her boyfriend Ryan, Grace, Jake’s mom, others that are trying to help the relationship + Stephanie trying to win Jake back.
This is a quick read + entertaining.

You will promptly start browsing your Alaskan cruise options after reading this book. I know I did!
This book is filled with sassy, strong-willed lead characters, those quirky, small-town side charcters we all love, and it’s set against a backdrop of the wild beauty of Alaska. My heart was full and my soul was happy while reading this amazing love story between Cammie and Jake.
Their sizzling chemistry and unapologetic banter was perfect! Loved it!

DNF - So much promise but began to fall over for me when a boat came 'hurdling' around a bend - what, it was jumping over it? Pretty sure that should be 'hurtling'.
I persevered until I got to:
...'I breathe deeply before my omission. "I'm not sure what I would do if my mom got sick."...
You breathe deeply before leaving something out, but then say what you were going to leave out? Or should that be a 'confession' not an 'omission'.
Needs an editor.

Was good, could have been better. My eyes rolled a few times.... she needed therapy... or the author needed to allude she's working through her issues... the lack of communication between the characters also irritated me. Those two things just could have been better written. Otherwise this story has/ had potential
