Enemy Closer

Rate this book
Enemy Closer is the second suspense thriller in the Jessica Taylor series - following Listless In Turkey. Also in the series is the stand-alone lockdown erotica, Covid Blues And Twos. The timeline, and a few names, are changed to protect the guilty and to facilitate this page turning novel. Otherwise, the plot is worryingly accurate and true to life. Onia Fox is a pen name.

People are seldom who they seem – keep your friends close, but your enemies closer

Jessica has no intention of returning to Turkey after her previous brush with the law, but circumstances conspire to dilute her resolve. Her friend, and senior colleague, calls in some favours. An old dalliance makes a welcome appearance. And her husband sidles up to his attractive colleague.
To the backdrop of the real-life shooting down of a Russian jet fighter on the Turkish-Syrian border, and the many infighting groups involved in the ongoing Syrian civil war, Jessica charges in.
Enemy Closer is a factually accurate, believable, page turning procedural suspense thriller.

Never a dull moment would be the ideal thing to carve on Jessica Taylor's headstone when she dies at the ripe old age of 95, still flirting with the old guys (and the staff) in the retirement home. And hopefully after a few more books about her have been written.
Enemy Closer is the third novel in the Jessica Taylor story and we have met erotic Jessica, reckless Jessica and, this time, we get to meet Jessica in her everyday career. She works for a company that makes guidance systems and the like for weapons - in this case anti-aircraft systems.
Set against the true story of the downing of a Russian jet on the Turkey-Syria border, the author skillfully blends fact with fiction as Jessica is caught up in the events and the war in Syria. This is a gripping suspense that will keep you reading as you follow Jessica.

Anybody else who’d experienced the trouble that our protagonist got herself into in Listless in Turkey would rather attend an Open University summer camp in Kabul than go back there. But this is Jess, after all, so all bets are off. In fairness to our listless, feckless and reckless heroine though, she’s approached by old friend, lover and boss Amara, aka Mrs Pebbles, who makes it abundantly clear that the offer she’s making is one which Jess can’t refuse.

So it’s back to the Bosphorus for Jess, in the company of another ex, Onslow, as well as husband Jason and his too-attractive-for-comfort colleague, the aptly-named Priti. Add the Royal Navy, Royal Marine Commandos, NATO, Islamic State, Peshmerga Kurds, a Russian air-defence system sold to Turkey, a petrochemical plant and a downed Russian jet fighter on the border with Syria, to name but a few, and the scene is set. For fireworks, you may be sure, with firecracker Jess thrown into the mix as the spark that sets off the arsenal.

I have to admit that the world within which Jess works is one of which I’m not fond. All those soldiers and arms, not to mention that acronyms abound there—TMBAs, Too Many Bloody Acronyms, as Amara puts it—but I can’t fault author Onia Fox in her illustration of it, which must have taken a shedload—or ammunition-bunker load—of research, and feels authentic, The mood is lightened by such memorable moments as Jess with her pink latex vibrator taken from her suitcase at Customs, not to mention that they get to eat Yogurtlu Kebab, a favourite of mine, so I’m happy.

Never a dull moment with Jess, as Onslow observes. How right he is. Recommended.

After the events of the first book, Jessica is now working for Company a mysterious clandestine organisation that specialises in arms shipments and weapons systems that will eventually see Jessica thrown into into the international limelight again. When her husband Jason accepts an assignment that will take him to Turkey, Jessica is not pleased. But yet again Turkey are not after Jason. Jessica resolves to stay away from the country but fate has other ideas when she is thrown into the middle of high stakes espionage and an international incident between Turkey and Russia could start World War 3 and Jessica could possible well be responsible for it all. This is a thrilling second instalment of the Jessica Taylor series that will keep you invested throughout.

I read the audiobook version of this book.

OMG, Jessica is heading back to Turkey! This definitely can't end well was the thought that went through my head when I read the description of this story!

What trouble will she get herself into this time? Has she grown up any?

Onia Fox brings you another action packed story that will have you wanting to read from beginning to end in one sitting. Ok, well, it did me! And to answer the questions I wrote above, nope, Jessica most certainly did not grow up! just like in the first book I was left wanting to shake some sense into her a great deal of the time especially when there's moments that are serious and you think she should show some empathy. But ha, nope, Jessica shows that when Jessica wants too. That's what makes her who she is, right? lol.

You will definitely see more of Jessica sex craved and jealous sides more in this story than you did the first time around. Like seriously, Jessica gets mad if her husband shows any attention to his working partner and expects him to do nothing when she does, ***shakes my head***

In fact, this story is more based around the job everyone is doing, but the whole cast of characters goes between flirting one moment and professional the next.

One part during the story I just had to groan out loud and if I could have been the men, I would have thrown things at her too, ha. It happens during the time Jessica is on the ship and is singing.

Just like in the first story Rebecca Fairnie does a great job in narrating. Jessica is the character that still gets the most emotion behind her, however, you can still hear the liveliness in the other characters as she is reading.

Jessica is the character that makes me want to take her over my knee and give her a good spanking, but sadly I think she'd enjoy it way too much. I look forward to more adventures from Jessica if there are any!

‘Aint misbehavin’ - But Jessica, you just cannot help yourself...

I would like to say I am falling in love with Jessica Taylor, but truthfully, I am just in love with reading about her adventures – she is just too hot to handle.
Book 1, Listless in Turkey (see my review) had me hooked on not just the woman and her adventures, but most importantly, the wonderful style of writing; succinct, hitting the spot economically that makes it pacey even if the writing is cleverly languorous, and in places, whimsically entertaining, and frankly, downright funny.
Jessica finds herself back in Turkey, despite being on the wanted list as public enemy number one and, as a munitions manufacturer project manager, she has to solve the riddle of electronic tampering; I know, I, as a dull luddite, it had me reeling but Fox writes it so well, I was hooked. So, when the Russians, Al Qaeda and the Kurdish freedom fighters start attacking each other with Jessica in the middle, blimey, what next? Relaxacat, Jessica’s got this right?
‘Aint misbehavin’ - But Jessica, you just cannot help yourself... and, all, even the readers, are left in her wake wondering just what happened.
Another intelligently, wittily and astutely written book by Onia Fox and I have already bought the next in the series – start on book 1, strap yourself in for a whirlwind ride that is totally believable if crazy – but that is life, yes? Well, it is with Jessica Taylor – 5 stars.

Great read!

Jessica was assigned to a new project, working on a new team. She soon found out the importance of her secondment and the unbelievable information that Russia had control over weapons that could destroy NATO aircraft. Her husband, Jason, had also been approached to do a job in Turkey which brought all sorts of problems for Jessica.
Based on actual occurrences, this talented author intermingles fact and fiction to produce the 2nd, thrilling adventure for Jessica Taylor. You are taken abroad, on a journey behind the scenes involving the work undertaken in the vital weapons systems of all players involved in the Syrian war. This story commands and occupies your full attention as things are forever changing and are always exciting whenever Jessica is around. She is strong, brave, flirtatious, funny, hard working and seems to attract danger wherever she goes. This brilliant but sometimes reckless character, takes the bull by the horns and keeps you transfixed. Written with a fantastic imagination, Onia Fox has pulled together a story that ignites the terrifying facts of war and turns it into an explosive, suspenseful thriller. Great job!

Another rattling good yarn (or is it a yarn?) from the mysterious Onia Fox and in fact the book goes a long why towards explaining why the author chooses to remain under cover. There is a great deal of what appears to be detailed insider knowledge about weapons systems and sales, as well as not-for- public-consumption, (un)diplomatic and cloak-and-dagger shenanigans here. Either that or the author’s undertaken a quite extraordinary amount of difficult research into classified information. Whatever the case, once the action leaves England (and a mass of technical jargon) behind and heads for Turkey, all hell breaks loose (almost literally) and the adrenaline-fuelled (and sex-fuelled) story rips along at a breathtaking pace with few holds barred. Great fun.

Getting to know Jessica is a real treat and this is the third novel I have read with her featuring in it. She is the perfectly flawed character I like to read about, where you love her one minute and question her decisions the next. The suspense and intrigue is mounting in Enemy Closer. I find it fascinating how reality and fiction is intertwined and, boy, I wish to know more about what happens behind the scenes in world politics and conflicts. Jace still features too and I have a complete and utter crush on him! Please write some more Onia Fox!
