"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

This is a spoiler-free review from Netgalley

Okay, I know I can't spoil anything in this graphic novel because that's the one rule on Netgalley, but how many of you don't already know what happens, anyway? Is there truly anyone who hasn't seen this treasure of a movie, yet? If so, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, GO WATCH IT!!!! And then go buy this graphic novel because everything becomes a hundred times better when it's written down and illustrated. On that note, you should definitely buy the book as well, because everything starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaak, and Jason Momoa deserves to be read. Period. These men have my heart.

If it hasn't already been made abundantly clear, I absolutely loved the movie, it was fantastic. I may not know just how accurate it is to the book(s) because I haven't read any of them, YET, but I still think it SLAAAAYYED. Of course, it could be that some of my favourite Hollywood actors play in it. I am crazy in love with Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya. Honestly, they must be two of the most talented young actors of our time. Then, there's Oscar Isaak and Jason Momoa who I also love deeply. They are both incredible. Not to mention, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgård. They seriously picked the best out of Hollywood for this movie and it shows.

As far as the graphic novel goes, it is exactly the same as the movie, scene to scene and line to line, only on paper. Not that I am surprised by this. If you're going to make a graphic novel out of a movie the least you could do is make it accurate from start to finish. I particularly enjoyed the art. Everyone looks as beautiful on paper as they do on screen, especially my girl, Zendaya. As if she could ever look bad, duuuuh 🙄🙄 I did not appreciate the thirst trap that was once again Oscar Isaak. You know the scene I'm talking about 👀👀 I knew it was coming and it still took my damn breath away. It still doesn't matter that it was THE saddest scene in the entire movie and the novel.

If you're not going to buy this book because it's the same as the movie, you should definitely buy it because I found some incredible bonus art for every major character in the movie. It was so pleasantly unexpected and beautiful. Once again Zendaya and Timothee fckn SLAYED!!! I will be using those as wallpapers on every single piece of technology I own. I want to see my lovelies' faces as soon as I wake up 😍😍 Don't worry...I know that's weird. Whatever! 😅😅

So, have you seen the movie, yet? Have you read the book?

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Dune: The Official Movie Graphic Novel is a fantastic short version of Dune (which I've still to read and watch) with some amazing graphics all the way through. I honestly cannot wait to read the full length book ASAP after reading this! And of course see the movie after that. The graphic novel starts with a two page introduction from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson about the book and how it became a movie then goes straight into the graphic novel version of the book. Anyone who loves graphic novels must read this! You won't be disappointed!

A fun graphic novel that shows many of the critical scenes that made the movie so spectacular.

The only downside is that much of the beautiful cinematography that made the movie so stunning was lost when transferred to the page.

Thanks for the ARC book @netgalley

I really enjoyed this as a companion to the film which I thought was brilliant. I’m not really sure that anyone unfamiliar with the Dune world , either book or film, would understand it.

I haven't read the Dune books but I have watched the film so I was able to enjoy it. This is just an addition to the film and honestly I don't think without reading the book or watching the film, one would be able to enjoy it.

Thank You NetGalley and Legendary Comics for this ARC!

I haven't read Dune *gasp* nor seen the film adaptation of it. As a result, I felt a little lost during this graphic novel. I feel like I understood the main plot points and story arc, but the emotional investment and any mood/tone was lost on me. I don't feel like the characters were even emotionally invested in their own story. The colors were very muted (intentionally?) and dark which made it hard to see the facial expressions and any details in the illustrations.

I feel like I need to watch the movie and read the book to understand this graphic novel better.

That being said, I did like the plot and the space drama that unfolds within these pages. The social commentary and politics feel like they have potential for many lessons in the classroom.

*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free graphic novel*

"Dune: The Official Graphic Novel" is the condensed version of the latest adaptation of Herbert's novel. Sadly the vastness and cinematography does not translate to the page that well. I kept missing the soundtrack, nuances. The entire storyline is shortened (it has to be) and the graphic novel ends as abruptly as the movie. While this graphic novel is beautiful, the shortened storyline makes sense, and the drawings are superb, I wasn't sure if people who do not know the book, the old movie or the new movie would be able to get into this graphic novel. But this might also be my insomnia talking because I finished this at 4am when I couldn't sleep. Well.

DUNE: by Lilah Sturges is a wonderful and the Official Movie Graphic Novel so if you loved film Like I did this is a book for you. This book was a breathe of fresh air especially as it has the same story and all the characters in the movie. Which is brilliant nothing was played around with or altered.

It’s a graphic novel adaptation of the movie adaptation of one of the best science fiction books. Go back to the movie or the source material. The graphic novel is beautiful but adds and does nothing that film or prose cannot.

Hugo nominated… somehow. Surely there are good original SFF stories being told in comics?

I found this at a comic shop in St. Louis. I'm on both a Dune and graphic novel kick as of late, and I needed yet another thing to pass the time until the second movie comes out. This was great! It made me want to watch the first movie again.

When I saw the film I knew little about it. I hadn't watched any of the previous interpretations or reas any of the books. Yet i found it an awestruck masterpiece. But i didn't yet have the will to read the books. But this comic blended everything i love about movies and the intricacies of books into one. The artist did amazingly, the emotion was clear in each character. And the writers were able to create to tonal language which was short enough for a graphic novel but long enough to show Herbert's true mind of the Dune series.
I received a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review from Netfalley. Any views expressed are my own.

2023 Hugo Award finalist - Best Graphic Story or Comic

This is a xerox of a xerox, i.e., an adaptation of the movie which is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's masterpiece. As such, it loses a lot of clarity and nuance--a pale shadow of the original book. Why something like this got nominated for the Hugo Award is beyond me. There are so many great comic books (probably more award deserving than in any other category), yet Hugo voters time and again go back to these kind of retreads in this category. The illustrations by Drew Johnson, with coloring by Zid Niezam, are very good, almost photorealistic at times. If you want the Cliff's Notes version of Dune, this is ok, but better to read the original. (Not to mention, this is only the first half of the book, as was the movie.)

It's like a watered down version of an already watered down version. It's still a fun read, but it just...doesn't have the depth of Dune. Which is something that both the previous graphic novel and the film were missing as well, but this is missing it to a greater extent.

Also, it feels really rushed and there are a ton of typos in the intro and the bios.

The Kickstarter campaign for the graphic novel of the movie adaptation yielded it's first digital fruit. The movie was spectacular and I somewhat enjoyed the nostalgia of looking at the scenes via a static scope that are the panels of the graphic novel. Then again, I also find myself asking what is the purpose of reiterating a perfect movie in such a static way. Some scenes or lines are left out, sadly. And you lose the perfect cinematography and the soundscape. I don't really understand who this reverse storyboarding is supposed to be for, even though I supported the campaign, but that's because I'm just a sucker for more Dune.

„Dune: The Official Movie Graphic Novel” autorstwa Lilah Sturges, to oficjalna komiksowa adaptacja nagrodzonego Oscarem epickiego dzieła science-fiction „Diuna” w reżyserii Denisa Villeneuve'a, bazująca na kultowej powieści wizjonerskiego autora Franka Herberta.

When this popped up I was really excited to check it out. I watched the film not too long ago and I wanted to gain further insight into the story as honestly, I was confused. Turns out this was not the media to help with this issue, if anything I’m now even more confused.

The graphic novel had the opposite problem to the film – it was way too fast-paced. A lot of important details seem missing and if you haven’t read the book series or watched the film you will be completely lost. I still feel lost with the story and I watched the film not long ago.

I’m now left wondering why this has been created. It’s a complete replica of the film, but with scenes cut out to make it shorter, and it offers no new insight or stories. It’s nice to have a companion novel, but the original series already exists for that reason. No hate to anyone involved in making this, but it seems a bit redundant to me.

I enjoy how realistic the art style looks, it must be really cool seeing yourself in a graphic novel, but as the colour scheme throughout was just brown and grey the finer details got lost very easily.

One thing I will say about the art, and please don’t take this as me slating the illustrator, but a lot of the time it looked like a painted filter put over shots of the film. Now I’m not sure if I mean this as a bad thing or not. Either this has been done and it’s very lazy, or the illustrator is just insanely talented. I wish I knew more about it to be honest.

I’m also not sure how much of the prose was written purposely for this, or what was taken straight from the film script. Which begs me to ask again, why has this been made? I get that it’s the quickest way to consume the story but if you have no prior knowledge of this world or story, you will probably have no idea what is going on.

Read this review and more on my blog, uncovered-books.

I received a free copy of Dune: The Offical Movie Graphic Novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

When I watched Dune in the movie theatre back in October of 2021 I was amazed. I had for a long time been meaning to read the series, but had not managed to get around to it. So seeing Denis Villeneuve’s vision onscreen was mind-blowing, and it was my first introduction to this universe.

For me, a graphic novel adaption of a movie is supposed to be an easy way to ‘rewatch’ the movie without having to rewatch it. This offical graphic novel adaption does exactly that, it cover exactly what the movie did and consolidated all of the vital aspects required of the story. No major aspects of the storyline were left out and while I could have easily enjoyed this being another 50 or so pages longer to add more in, I can understand why they chose to keep this graphic novel at its current length.

The art style was hit-and-miss for me. At times it felt like the movie had come to live on the page. I could not, and still cannot, believe that someone could be so talented to be able to recreate the scenes from the movie how they did. Then unfortunately at times I was jarred out of my amazement by the facial expressions. Majority of them were very good and the characters looked exactly like they did on screen, then at other times they appeared to be anything but.

I will reread this graphic novel again when I don’t have the time to watch the movie, but I would prefer to watch the movie.

Lilah Sturges’ interpretation of Dune, based on the recent movie, is just as great as watching the movie, only this time in still drawings with speech bubbles spread across pages. Starting with the story of how Dune came from thought to story, Lilah takes the reader on a visual journey of the events from Dune movie part 1 from 2022. Just as in the movie, the colors are very strong and play a big role in the storytelling. My favourite pages were the ones from Dune where the native-blue eyes appear just as s splatter of color on a page full of yellow. The effect is amazing!

If you’re a long-time Dune fan, you’ll probably want to get a printed version of this graphic novel, as the middle and the end contain a lot of posters, including a 2 x page of the famous Dune worm facing Paul and Jessica. If this is your thing, make sure to also check the character gallery sketches at the end of the graphic novel, it’s definitely worth admiring!

Special thanks to NetGalley, Legendary Comics, and the editorial team for giving me the opportunity to review the ARC in audiobook format and to you, my reader, for taking the time to read this honest personal book review.

Thank you NetGalley for an arc of this graphic novel! Firstly, I have to say that I have been a huge fan of the Dune Universe for years. I love the original books and the 2021 movie. So, I was so excited to see that there is an official movie graphic novel and it didn't disappoint.

I already knew I loved the story, no surprise here. I feel like even though the story had to be condensed (as expected) it still kept the main points and it was easy to follow. The characters are beautifully portrayed as well. (The art is based on the actors from the movie). The only thing I can mention is that because of the condensed story, you are loosing some details about the importance of some of the secondary characters.

Lastly, the art... the ebook arc was not as detailed as I would have wanted, but it still looked wonderful. The beautiful colors and epic scenes from the movie are there. I am happy they went with a more dark atmospheric feel when it comes to the colors used.

I highly recommend you read in preparation for the 2nd movie. Also, reading this while listening to the movie's soundtrack is an awesome experience. But I do not recommend this as an introduction to the Dune Universe.

I feel ashamed that I did not know the classic version of The Dune written by Frank Herbert, a movie source (2021 and now this graphic novel based on it). This is as in the title "The Official Movie Graphic Novel" - so if you watched it, you will know the content - that will be read in a really fast way. Still, I think I would recommend it only to those who watched the film.
Paul Atreides is a boy coming from a Royal family, but his destiny is much more than being a ruler - his fate is about something much greater, and who knows where this would lead our male MC into. His development was well introduced here as he got from a young momma boy (still with powers) to a man that can change the destiny of many creatures - I have MANY questions for what will happen next, and waiting for the movie/comics will be a very long way ahead. So I think I will put Herbert's novels on my TBR pile.
I started with the paragraph that this graphic novel is the same when it comes to the plot content, but what the creators include here are some pretty nice arts that I loved looking at when I finished this story.

Shortly after the movie came out last year, a KickStarter was announced to create a new Dune graphic novel that was based on the film. Never mind that there was already an official adaption of the book, two volumes of which were already released. The movie differs from the novel slightly and has a unique iconic look.
The story is exactly the same as the movie, almost as if they had illustrated the screenplay. There were some slight differences and omissions but was entertaining. The art was incredibly detailed but was a bit slavish, almost as if they illustrated to still frames of the movie. I remember the Dune adaption that Marvel put out to tie into the Lynch film. There was some variance from the film, explaining things that were happening maybe a little better than the movie did.
It actually reminded me of the old Star Wars Storybook I had as a kid. You remember the one, from Scholastic, that was full of color pictures from the movie and was probably one of the best ways to re-experience the movie at home or in school in the dark days before home video. Now I can call it up on my phone or computer anytime I want. I'm pretty sure they did a Dune Storybook for the Lynch film too.
It would have been nice if they had included some cut scenes or maybe scenes from the book that didn't make it into the final cut but were imagined in the style of the movie (I'm specifically thinking of the Dinner Party scene.) It's a fun read but if you are looking for a Dune comic that is a better adaption and maybe willing to give you a little more bang for your buck, go for the official one from Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson.

Read for the 2023 Hugos

This book has a lot going for it. First, it is absolutely beautiful. The art is perfect and captures the movie brilliantly. Second, the story is good. Of course, it's following the movie, which is following the book, so it was bound to be good.

There are two problems that I can see with this book. First, it needs to be longer. Every scene is sort of a greatest hits of the matching scene in the movie. It feels like the book is kind of in a hurry to cover the whole movie. It needs to slow down, add a bit more dialog and find ways to make the action longer. Second, the whole thing just feels like a series of scenes that require the reader to fill in the gaps between them. It doesn't really flow from one moment to the next. Of course, the movie is the same way. It's been too long since I read the book to remember if it's like that, too.

Is it a good adaptation? Absolutely. Does it stand on its own without requiring the reader to have seen the movie? I'm not sure about that one.

I think if you LOVED the newest film adaptation you will love this because it is essentially stills from the film that have been recreated. You would probably rate this 4 or 5 stars.

For me, it wasn’t my favorite, since I’ve only read the book and while it’s a pretty accurate adaptation, I don’t really like the feeling of looking at images of the movie. At the end of this, there was a sketch an Paul that looks more illustrated, and I think I would have preferred an entire book in that style more.

This is the 2nd book I’ve gotten that based on an film adaptation and I just don’t think they are the right fit for me. But that’s not the fault of the book or the art. It’s just a me thing.
