When you wake up next to him in the middle of the night / With your head in your hands, you're nothing more than his wife / And when you think about me all of those years ago / You're standing face to face with "I told you so" (Good Luck, Babe! – Chappell Roan).
When I say that I was big into manga as a kid, I’m a little ashamed to admit that I actually only really read Shonen manga (stories generally aimed at boys), and while I don’t regret loving the stuff I loved (Dragon Ball Z and Full Metal Alchemist are masterpieces), I can’t help but feel like I’ve always been missing out on an important piece, you know? A part of my soul was withering in neglect, forever yearning for something else! "I want to cook you a soup that warms your soul" and all that. Well, I'm probably being dramatic, but only ever sticking to one genre can easily grow stale and make you resentful of that in which you once loved if you’re not careful. And that's never been more true than with my relationship with Shonen manga, because there’s no denying that truly special Shonen manga are outliers rather than the norm. It sucks how more often than not whenever I try to pick something new up, they're usually just those dumb manga where the dumb main character wakes up in some dumb fantasy world as the most powerful character in the story or mindless dumb action slop. It’s dumb. And it reminds me of the fact that I don’t even like the action movies all that much! Literally every Mission Impossible movie I've seen just had me sitting there with the emotional range of a Slenderman for the entire run time. Not even Ving Rhames acting his ass off while telling us, the audience, that Tom Cruise is a cool dude, actually, and totally not a weirdo at all could get an emotion out of me. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t me trying to brag about how refined my cinematic palate is, I love all the Genndy Tartakovsky stuff, Samurai Jack and Clone Wars, and I've always really enjoyed the John Wick movies minus the third act in the third one! But I can’t lie that after hours upon hours of loud noises, I never fail to realize that my cup of tea will always be the low key stories. Something more chill. Anyway, this is my way of saying that reading this manga was like a wake up call as well as a revelation. Like, “Oh yeah, this is the type of stuff I dig!” So let’s talk about it a little! The story is begins as a high school student named Naho receives a letter from her future self imploring her (somewhat cryptically) that she should appreciate the people in her life and take care of them while she still can. The last bit being a directive that’s specifically aimed her new friend, transfer student, Kakeru. This is less a spoiler and more... just the premise of the manga, but the main plot revolves around Naho trying to shed her “wallflower” personality and by doing so, she just might be able to stop Kakeru from being Looking for Alaska’d.
I always enjoy time travel as a story convention because it’s pretty much perfect for exploring nostalgia as a theme in a way that isn’t just “Hey, remember that one thing?” Does anybody remember "Within Walking Distance?" It's a Twilight Zone episode about a man who quite literally walks back into his childhood, but rather than sunshine and roses, he quickly realizes things weren't as cozy and happy as he had originally thought. Even though he was able to go back, he still couldn't go back, if you catch my drift. Granted, I totally understand the urge to want to make every story self-indulgent nostalgia bait, exclaiming to the world that "everything was better back then!" I really do, but I think what a lot of writers miss about nostalgia is that it's always going to be bittersweet. I mean, I'm nostalgic over last Tuesday, so I’m not one to talk, but I'd take Orange any day over something that feels like it's pandering to me, never able to grow up. For example, on paper I'd be the exact target audience for Ready Player One because I'm a big fan of a lot of the stuff it references, but I would never read the book or watch the movie because it quite literally looks like the biggest pile of abysmal trash to me. My bad, I don’t mean to prattle on and on, sitting on my high horse like I'm Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones season 8, episode 6, I just wanted to stress the fact that theming a story around nostalgia can easily turn from emulating the heartbreak and yearning of In the Mood for Love (the best movie ever made) to just another soulless husk regurgitated from the limited imagination of J. J. Abrams; a man trapped in the pursuit of finding the last remnant of his childhood joy, his “rosebud,” through the medium of film, and forever failing like the modern day Sisyphus of slop 1980’s nostalgia bait. Sorry, I know it seems like I hate J. J. Abrams' movies. That's it, that was the end of the sentence. Um, moving on though, I could see how it might be a little disappointing how Orange doesn’t really seem too interested in going in depth into the mechanics of time travel, but the thing is... not only did I not notice, but I was actually kind of relieved that it didn't bother. We've all seen About Time, we get it! Besides, I think it’s more fun and interesting to look at Orange as being in the same vein, the same category, as something like a I Saw the T.V. Glow, where the themes are so steeped in metaphor that it doesn’t really matter whether the events that transpire throughout the narrative are actually real or not. It’s not about what you’re seeing, it’s about what it means! How did Naho send a letter back in time? Who cares! This is a coming-of-age story about regret and second chances, and that's all that really matters. Anyway, this was lovely, and while it nearly made me burst in tears several times, I’m thinking this manga probably won’t end up being too sad. I’m hoping for a “No fate but what we make” kind of thing. Fingers crossed!

No sé, pero no es lo que esperaba. El primer capítulo sí que me gustó, lo vi como una buena introducción y con unos personajes que pensaba que podrían dar juego con la historia. En la segunda parte la trama fue avanzando, y pese a que la protagonista me sacaba de los nervios, entendía ligeramente su situación. El problema vino a partir de la mitad.
Porque mira, entiendo la sociedad de Japón y este género de manga. De verdad que lo entiendo, pero estaba lleno de machistadas. Es que eran demasiado obvias como para ignorarlas o centrarme en otros aspectos. Y es que encima son gestos machistas que se convierten de pronto en partes importantes de la historia: ¡oh, no, te voy a preparar la comida TODOS los días porque así me haces caso! En fin.
Entonces; hay potencial, hay personajes que encajan con la historia, el dibujo me ha gustado más que el de otros mangas y el guion -obviando esos momentos tan machistas- me parece original pero totalmente desaprovechado, que ese es otro problema. No me ha terminado de convencer, pero al menos ha resultado algo entretenido. No sé si continuar con la serie, aunque solo con cinco números... Ya veré.

Full Manga Review (no spoilers)
Status: Finished
Chapters: 22 ( For some reason MAL put the five chapters of another manga called Haruiro Astronaut by the same mangaka in the chapter count of Orange so dont get confused. This manga has 22 chapters instead of 27 like MAL says. It seems MAL did that because every volume of Orange has one chapter of that manga but I still dont get it. It's a completely different story.)
Themes: Depression, strong friendship, romance, time travel
Genres: Shoujo, Drama, Tragedy, Psychological, School Life, Slice Of Life, Sci-Fi, Romance
HEA?
There are many shoujos out there makes me go 'Dont do this shit, man'. Love triangles, jealous fake friends, predictable plots and weak heroines etc. Super popular -and troubled- guy ends up with the 'plain' girl' who has a friend that's also secretly in love with her? Like ENOUGH. I've got enough of them. But this manga? It touched me. I've read numerous series that have touched me and made me feel so many emotions -such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Hotarubi No Mori E but believe me when I say this series is something special. It's so beautiful, brilliant, heart-wrenching, and so completely wonderful.
Why?
Characters, man. I cant believe these characters. If there was any award for fictional characters who are really good friends I'd have given it to them.
What would you have done if one day you suddenly received a letter written to you from ten years in the future? A letter that says one of your friends will die soon? What if your future self asked you to save that friend? Can you imagine knowing someone will kill himself/herself and having the power to stop that?
What would one sacrifice to save a friend- and all of this is based on faith in the letters?
That's the story.
There arent many times I feel like crying reading a manga.
There arent many times I feel this anxious to know of the outcome of a story.
There arent many times I feel depressed because a manga was too short (I usually whine how long it was, due to its dragging too much)
BUT WOW. Amazing storyline. Amazing suspense. My heartstrings were wrenched at various points in the story :(

This "regret" thing in the story attracted me the most, I think. Well, everyone does have regrets in life yeah? And wants to go back to the past and erase those regrets. This story reminds me that, if there's something we really want to do, to say or to have, or simply have something that will make us happy, we should just go for it so that we won't live our lives asking "what if?" and telling ourselves "if only I did". We all should make the most of our time with the people we love and die without any regrets. That's just it. Life, is sometimes unfair but we just got to open our eyes and realize it's actually beautiful.
Bottom Line: READ IT!! I'm blown away by the story and concept. It's beautifully done. The characters are fairly realistic-- and the little bits of the future. I don't think I've ever read a story that I've been so satisfied yet emotionally incapable of thought.
Ending felt a bit open but I LOVED IT. It was perfect. Though, I wish they were extra chapters just so to see what happened afterwards both in the present and in the future >,<
Also, aw, Suwa. Really, he is so amazing, pure and the best character hands down!! Huge respect for the guy. I don't think I'd be able to do what he did.

Naho, una chica de dieciséis años, recibe un día de primavera una carta enviada por su yo de diez años en el futuro. Desde ese día Naho no deja de recibir cartas en las que su yo del futuro le explica que hay muchas cosas de las que se arrepiente y que le gustaría poder cambiar. La más importante es evitar que alguien muy importante para ella, su querido y misterioso Kakeru, desaparezca de su vida. Pese a un primer momento de incredulidad, se empieza a dar cuenta de que las cartas relatan con exactitud todo lo que tiene que pasar, y también le dejan instrucciones precisas de que es lo que quiere cambiar para evitar ese futuro.
Tengo que admitir desde aquí que no soy un asiduo lector de shôjo, pero este llamo tanto mi atención desde la sinopsis, su fama y su futura adaptación anime, que me tuve que hacer con él. Desde las primeras páginas la historia te atrapa, con una historia hermosa y bastante triste, pero con un toque de ciencia ficción podríamos decir de lo más atractivo, porque, ¿a quién no le gustaría cambiar alguna cosa de su pasado? Narrativamente tiene un ritmo acompasado por las Naho del futuro y del pasado, que hace la lectura de lo más amena en este tomo dividido en cuatro capítulos, explorando el paso de la adolescencia a la edad adulta. El mensaje de Takano es de lo más sencillo, pero también profundo, hay que atreverse hacer las cosas que uno quiere, hay que ser valiente y correr riesgos, aunque salga mal, mejor eso que dejarse cosas en el tintero de las que arrepentirse en el futuro.
El dibujo de Ichigo es sencillo, con pocos fondos, de trazo bastante grueso, muy agradable a la vista y que encaja a la perfección la historia que narra. Me gusta la forma expresiva de sus personajes, sus ojos reflejan muy bien las emociones, captando esos carices de tristeza o melancolía. El tomo esta impoluto a nivel de traducción y edición, además incluye una historia más ligera, Astronauta en primavera, y un punto de libro si lo adquieres en la página de Tomodomo.

Super completely random decided to check this out. I had this on my tbr and then Gabry rec'd it to me so I was like ... cool, let's give this a chance.
Nine chapters and two hours later I was hooked.
This has a perfect blend of great characters, fantastic story, and a bit of a scifi twist to get you hooked.
Can't wait to finish this one and see what happens.

I did not expect this. Normally, I avoid this genre of manga, I prefer shonen and more action, however, this story is so beautiful. It stole my heart.

I was expecting a cutesy, shallow plot, but this story is actually touching, and has potential for some tears. I like how the writer handles friendship, without all that sisterhood-traveling-pants far-fetched nonsense. It's a perfect balance between the importance of friends and the pitfalls of reality.

In the midst of the usual shoujo manga varieties that cater to the many shades and conflicts of school-girl infatuation and romance, Ichigo Takano's ongoing series ORANGE easily stands out. This manga's central romantic development, though more or less integral to the tale being told, is not Orange's real selling point let alone its primary focus. Instead, Orange is a rather earnest and at times painfully realistic story concerning a teenager's clinical depression told in the perspectives of his high school friends. In a bittersweet fashion with an understanding and depth of how mental illness truly affects a person and his social ties Orange produced such a nuanced examination of depression in the character of Kakeru Naruse.
It's not just a mere plot device to get two people in a relationship or for the lead heroine to go on a journey and fix the guy with tender love and care. It was only when we keep reading that it was revealed that, according to Naho's letters, Kakeru is increasingly becoming more reticent and withdrawn without his classmates' knowledge until one night he got ran over by a car as he was riding his bike. There were also small revelations in between where Naho's group of friends find out about Kakeru's mother committing suicide on their first day of school and how deeply he had blamed himself since and that it had also driven him to attempt to take his own life once. These details were revealed to the present Naho via letters and whose actions since learning these things gradually improved Kakeru's perspective about himself and others. She now has a personal mission to save her friend. With only letters from her future self to aid her, Naho is determine to create an alternate world where Kakeru could live happily and still be with her and their friends a decade later. It sounds like a noble plan but Orange was inquisitive enough to show that depression is an ongoing battle that a bunch of well-meaning teenagers can't absolve by themselves.
You can't just tell someone who is clinically depressed to "get over it" or do everything in your power and sacrifice so many things for the betterment of that person's life and believe that's all it takes for him to shake it off. Personally, I think Kakeru needs serious counselling and professional therapy and I certainly hope that the manga will deal with that in the upcoming later chapters. If you're interested to read Orange right at this moment then you are in luck! The online site kissmanga has amazingly translated pages of the story that's ready for your enjoyment. I personally also read the comments and discussion among the readers below each chapter, and their insights and their arguments among themselves also happen to increase my emotional investment on the story and the struggles of the characters. It's interesting to read about what fans think of certain scenes and how easy it is to misunderstand Kakeru himself whom some readers feel is too much of a downer and who cannot appreciate his friends's efforts to make him happy.
There are readers, who know enough about depression either through personal experiences with loved ones or as people who suffered from it themselves, who quickly come to Kakeru's defense, citing that he is not fully in control of his emotions and that, really, these are all a bunch of kids during puberty which only adds to their helplessness and confusion. If the writer finally updates with a new chapter, I could only hope it will touch upon about the more complicated issues and dangers of trying to help someone with depression when you yourself don't have enough experience or maturity such as Naho and her friends, in spite of their good intentions.
Nevertheless, I myself would gladly buy and wear a shirt that says SAVE KAKERU because I want the best outcome from his story because I've also learned to care about what happens to him and whether or not he can survive. We all want happy endings, or at least a manageable life for Kakeru who has tons of adjustment to cope for, and years of therapy ahead of him. But at least he will live. Here are some sample pages:

همهی کسایی که منو میشناسن میدونن که من مانگا نمیخونم (به جز دوتا والیوم spy family که اونم به اجبار دوستام بود😂) ولی باید بگم با این مانگا...فکر میکنم این قضیه عوض شه و از این به بعد بگم من قبل از orange مانگا "نمیخوندم"!
دلیل اینکه شروعش کردم خلاصهش بود. توی اولین یا دومین جملهای که ازش شنیدم تصمیم گرفتم بخونمش ولی کوچیکترین تصوری نداشتم که چقدر قراره دوستش داشته باشم!
از لحظهای که شروعش کردم دائم توی ذهنمه. یعنی ممکن نیست یک ساعت بگذره و من حداقل یکی دو بار به شخصیتای این مانکا فکر نکرده باشم.
اینکه پلات داستان خیلی قشنگه و واقعا میخوام بدونم چی میشه (ولی میترسم که بفهمم چی میشه) یه طرف، شخصیتای لعنتیشم یه طرف!

Was für eine tolle Geschichte! Es haben ja schon so viele von diesem Manga geschwärmt (auch Leute, die sonst eigentlich keine Manga lesen) und jetzt musste ich mich endlich mal selbst überzeugen. Die Charaktere sind so toll und ich liebe die Story jetzt schon. Gleichzeitig gibt es immer noch diesen Aspekt des Erwachsen werdens und der Gedanke, welche Chancen man genutzt und welche verpasst hat - und das ist einfach so toll mit in diese Story eingearbeitet. Man fühlt sich direkt angesprochen und fühlt mit den Charakteren mit. Ich bin schon wahnsinnig gespannt auf Band 2!

Dieser erste Band der Reihe hat mir überraschend gut gefallen!
Es ist schon sehr viel passiert und ich finde die Charaktere sehr sympathisch und fiebere sehr mit ihnen mit. Ich bin total gespannt, wie die Geschichte sich weiterentwickeln wird und ob die Zukunft sich tatsächlich ändern wird.
ich hatte zuerst Bedenken bei der Reihe wegen dem leicht übersinnlichen Aspekt, weswegen Carlsen den Manga auch als "Mystery" einstuft, aber dieser steht nicht unbedingt im Vordergrund und macht die Geschichte dabei gerade interessant.
Übrigens gefällt mir die dazugehörige Kurzgeschichte "Spring-Colored Astronaut" auch sehr gut :)

I heard nothing but good things about this series and I'm so glad it's that good. Actually, it's so much better than I thought. I love the science fiction idea, the characters... I never cared so much about manga characters in a first volume like I did this time. If you haven't read it, you should do it right now.

Zum Cover + Zeichenstil: Für seine schlichte Eleganz ist es erstaunlich detailiert gezeichnet. Ich finde, dass in den Linien und Strichen, die eine gesamte Szene abbilden, so viel Leben und Gefühl drin steckt, dass ich doch positiv überrascht war. Denn so muss ich zugeben, sind die vielen, groß begeisterten Stimmen sehr wohl gerechtfertigt. Und zwar mehr als nur ein bisschen, sehr sogar.
Zum Inhalt: "Liebe Naho...", es ist nicht ungewöhnlich, dass ein Brief an Naho mit dieser Anrede beginnt. Aber da will doch jemand tatsächlich Naho Takamiya weismachen, dass ihr zukünftiges 'Ich' sich selbst diesen Brief geschrieben haben soll, ein Brief aus der Zukunft?! Naho glaubt das natürlich erst nicht, doch dann geschehen die Dinge wirklich so, wie sie in dem Brief beschrieben wurden. Etwas Schlimmes scheint sich in ihrem Leben heranzubahnen, und sie beschließt, das Schicksal zu ändern. Ein Schicksal, dass sich um ihren neuen Mitschüler Kakeru Naruse rankt.
Meine Meinung: Zuerst sage ich schon mal, dass ich soweit gar nicht weiter auf den Inhalt eingehe, ich finde, dass man bei Mangas das sehr gut selbst entscheiden kann - wie eigentlich auch generell. Jedenfalls geht es mir so, denn der schmale Grat zwischen zu viel verraten, ist bei einem Manga immer recht groß, finde ich. Daher eben eher ein kurzes Statement, je nachdem, wie man es halt nennen möchte.
Zum lebendigen Zeichenstil habe ich ja bereits etwas erwähnt, dieser wurde aber auch dadurch super unterstützt, dass die Charaktere genug Raum und Zeit bekommen haben. Jede Entwicklung geht hierbei Schritt für Schritt, was doch sehr realistisch wirkt.
Ich finde es auch interessant, dass die Mangaka eigene Erlebnisse und Vorlieben in diese Reihe mit hinein transportiert. Denn es spielt in Matsumoto in der Präfektur Nagano, in dem sie selbt Zuhause ist und auch ihre Lieblingseissorte kommt darin vor, wie man in ihrer kleinen Vorstellung am Ende erfährt. Das macht sie als Mangaka und vor allem auch als Mensch wahnsinnig symphatisch, selbst wenn man sie noch nie zuvor gesehen hat.
Und diese Symphatie lässt ihre Charaktere in diesem Manga und auch in dem kleinen Zusatz-Manga, der im zweiten Band ebenfalls fortgesetzt wird, genauso unglaublich authentisch werden. In der großen Freundesrunde ist garantiert für jeden jemand dabei, mit dem man sich identifizieren kann. Und wenn nicht, macht das auch nichts, weil man sie trotzdessen ins Herz schließt. Alleine schon durch die spannende, gefühlvolle Geschichte, die so viel mehr ist, als bloß ein Lari-dari-Liebesdilemma. Nicht nur, weil dieser Manga dem Genre "Mystery" zugeteilt wurde, sondern auch, weil er Lust auf mehr macht. Besonders, da der erste Band einen mit einem ziemlichen Cliffhanger zurücklässt. Zumindest verspüre ich es so für mich.
Fazit: Ich wollte "Orange" eigentlich auch erst 4 Sterne geben, habe mich dann aber doch dafür entschieden, ihm 5 zu geben, denn der erste Band lässt schon auf eine gute Manga-Reihe schließen. I almost drowned in my own tears. And even after so many days, every time I think about this manga, I die a little inside.
This review is my version of catharsis.
The thing about oranges is that when you peel the rind, you don’t know how it would taste. You pick a piece and put it in your mouth, you don’t know; it could taste tangy and bitter or, it could taste sweet and citrusy, like a burst of sunset between your teeth. That’s what I think this manga allegorizes. I had no idea going in what I would encounter; except that this was going to be an emotional journey and that there might be a few tears along the way-I hadn't expected myself to laugh while I was crying, wanting to hug my best friend(s) at 4 am in the morning or crying myself to sleep when I had to wake up early to study for an exam the next day.
This manga destroyed me. And built me back up again.
Despite Orange's vibrant art, it touches quite dark topics like suicide and depression. It talks about helplessness. It talks about regret.

In the future we get to know that Naho and Suwa get married and have a little baby together. It broke my heart into a million pieces to see Suwa wanting to change the future trying to save his friend even if it meant losing his family. That is one of the most beautiful friendships I have ever seen.

Great manga with nice story that goes deep into the psychology of the characters, touching sensitive issues. That said, it doesn't focuses on the school life, friendship and young love solemnly and that was interesting. Another plus of this manga was its length, as it was short enough to read it comfortably.

Dieser Manga hat mich so beeindruckt! Der Zeichenstil ist unfassbar schön und die Geschichte hat mich gleichermaßen gefesselt und gerührt. Ich brauche dringend den zweiten Band und kann zumindest den ersten uneingeschränkt empfehlen!

Una vez alguien me dijo, "hey! ¿Por que pones mangas en Goodreads, si Goodreads es solo de libros?"
Pues déjenme contarles queridos lectores, que el manga tambien es literatura. No suelo poner los mangas aquí porque, de hecho, no leo muchos mangas, pero este realmente me ha gustado mucho, y pienso que hacer una review es una forma de que otros lo vean y tambien lo lean.
Esta es una historia de una chica de escuela, Naho de 16 años, que recibe una carta de su yo del futuro de 10 años después, dándole instrucciones, para que haga o no haga ciertas cosas, para que de alguna manera pueda evitar el arrepentimiento que tiene su yo del futuro, que en este caso es el no haber podido evitar la muerte de Kakeru, el chico que le gustaba, y que de alguna manera en el transcurso de la historia, ella y sus amigos van tomando responsabilidad ya que no quieren que a el le pase nada malo, y su objetivo es que sea feliz.
La historia no esta completa, creo que aun falta bastante por publicar, pero es hermosa, ves la mayor parte del lado de Naho de 16 años, pero tambien ves los sentimientos de Naho de 26 años, ya casada, con un hijo y cargando arrepentimientos, que ha de ser horrible.
Debo decir que como soy una llorona, hay varias escenas que me arrancaron lagrimas y que si las sentí bastante.
Pero sin duda, quiero seguir leyendo cuando salga el siguiente tomo, y quiero saber como concluye todo, es hermosa y atrapante. Y espero que tambien puedan leerlo y compartir mis sentimientos :')
Pues déjenme contarles queridos lectores, que el manga tambien es literatura. No suelo poner los mangas aquí porque, de hecho, no leo muchos mangas, pero este realmente me ha gustado mucho, y pienso que hacer una review es una forma de que otros lo vean y tambien lo lean.

Me enamoré para toda la vida.
Es hermoso cuando tomás un manga con todo el hype y termina cumpliendo esas expectativas.
Acá tenemos a Naho, nuestra protagonista, una adolescente de 16 años quien recibe una carta de su yo a 10 años en el futuro mencionándole sucesos que estarán por venir y cosas que quiere que haga (y que no haga) para que luego no se quede con el remordimiento, debido a que la Naho de 26 años ya no puede con todo el arrepentimiento que carga su corazón.
Bien, ella duda completamente hasta que se cumple algo que estaba anunciado en la carta: la llegada de Kakeru Naruse, un nuevo compañero que se volverá alguien muy especial en este grupo de amigos y, por supuesto, una persona querida para ella..
Y qué decir, ay... Apenas estaba alcanzando la mitad del manga cuando ya había llorado dos veces, ahora mismo soy más lágrimas que persona.
Esta historia es hermosa y desgarradora. El diseño de personajes una maravilla absolutamente, de los más lindos que he visto, y los personajes son súper queribles y lógicos, actúan como lo harían personas de su edad, están muy bien construidos.
Necesito dejar ésto hasta acá antes de salir corriendo a tomar el tomo 2 de mi librero.

"Mi yo de 10 años en el futuro, tiene mucho más de lo que arrepentirse que yo. Seguro que piensa: "Ojalá hubiera hablado mucho más con Kakeru". Porque en el futuro, Kakeru ya no está, pero yo sí lo tengo aquí. Y, aunque las cosas no salgan bien, todavía me queda la posibilidad de arreglarlas."
