I love shoes. And, I really enjoyed Nine Women, One Dress. There were lots of things that worked for me in this new release: 1) The shoes! Each chapter is given the name of the shoes Esme is wearing in that part of the book. See below for one of my favorites. 2) Relationships -- Esme has lost both of her parents since she graduated from college seven years earlier. Her dreams were derailed. Can she begin to rebuild? She makes her first friend at the dog park. 3) NYC setting. Lots of great art, restaurants, and iconic New York. 4) Esme ponders the effects of alcoholism on families in a real way. 5) I really loved Esme and her friend Zach sounds pretty cute. All in all, a delightful read that I will be recommending.

Thank you to Berkley and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the premise of this novel, but not the execution. When Esme Nash was graduating from college and about to start adult life working her dream job at a gallery in New York City, living with her beloved boyfriend, a horrific car accident undoes all of her plans for the next seven years.

Now Esme makes it to the city as a dog walker for 28 days, and she happens to dog sit for a woman who has the same shoe size and very expensive taste. I could not possibly care less about expensive shoes, but I do share Esme’s interest in art. The problem with this novel is cliches, info dumps, telling not showing, and a lack of depth when Esme makes revelations about her life. I wanted to feel the big epiphanies along with her, but instead I felt like they were reported to me from a distance.

NetGalley provided an advance copy of this novel, which RELEASES JUNE 28, 2022.

Esme Nash is graduating college and is looking forward to an exciting life in New York City. She plans to live with her boyfriend and has secured a job at an art gallery. Her plans are abruptly halted when her parents are in an accident and she has to return to upstate New York to care for her ailing father.

Years later, Esme is offered a temporary job as a dog sitter at an apartment in New York City. Esme takes the job because she is curious about living in NYC and the opportunities that she left behind. One goal is to reconnect and reestablish a friendship with her former boyfriend. Her daily dog walks bring insights into her new home as she starts developing unlikely friendships. Esme comes to terms with the life and the career that she forfeited and is left wondering if they will be a part of her future.

A Shoe Story by Jane L Rosen is a wonderful story about friendship, regret, and second chances. I enjoyed Esme’s honesty and vulnerability as she struggles to figure out her next path in life.

“Every pair of shoes tells a story.”

They were dark charcoal gray knee-high UGG boots. I loved those UGG boots. I remember when they went on sale at Nordstroms when I lived in Southern California. I had saved my dollars so I could buy them. They were the thing! They were perfect when I moved to the Central Coast. So warm and cozy to wear on wintry cold days.

And one day while I was visiting my horse Buddy that I had at the time, I was wearing those very same UGG boots. And then…

Buddy moved left when I wasn’t paying attention (shame on me) and he stepped on my left foot and ended up tearing open my UGG boot. I don’t know what I was more upset about – the torn UGG boot or the torn/strained tendon in my foot. I loved those UGG boots. I was heartbroken when I realized that they were irreplaceable.

But those boots have nothing to do with this story. I just thought the first line, brought that memory back for me.

“One day at a time.”

No, this is Esme’s story. About dreams shattered and changed when a car accident kills her mother and makes her father a paraplegic. So instead of celebration on her college graduation day, she finds herself for the next 7 years taking care of her father and losing herself.

After he dies, this becomes Esme’s opportunity for self-discovery. And through her love of shoes, she takes a month, and baby-sits a dog named Elvis and finds a way to reconcile the past, discover her future, and learn about herself, so that she can create the life she truly deserves.

“You are my north.”

“You are my north, my south, my east, and my west.”

But, will she find her happily ever after?

With a deeply developed cast of characters, that have their own heart-wrenching stories to tell, this is a true gem of a story that will keep any reader wanting to stay with it from the moment they pick it up.

And perhaps have memories about favorite shoes, too!

This will be a wonderful summer read for 2022. Following college, Esme put her life and dreams of moving to New York City and pursing an career at an art gallery on hold to care for her father when he had a terrible car crash. Seven years later she is offered a month-long job dog sitting in beautiful Greenwich Village apartment. Even better, the apartment’s owner has an amazing collection of designer shoes which Esme asks to borrow. Each day she tries a different pair as she works to make friends, regain her old life, and decide how much of her old dreams are still relevant to her now. I really enjoyed this book, and the added element of the fabulous shoes was fun and unique. I highly recommend this one and think it will be the perfect vacation read.

I am feeling incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to read and review this totally delightful novel. Rosen has written another winner.

This is the story of Esme Nash, a timely story, since she became a caregiver for her ailing father at a very young age. It literally stopped her life on the day it should have begun, the day she graduated from college. Seven years later, when her father passed, Esme restarted her journey. It was then that she could go to NYC to try to rebuild her life, maybe reconnect to her great love.

Since Esme loves shoes (as do many readers)., those shoes are used as markers for the chapters. She moves to NYC sitting for a lovable dog while it’s shoe hoarder “mother” is away. Her openness and underlying goodness quickly help her connect with other New Yorkers. Here, Rosen really weaves a magical subplot, with her elderly friends’ love story woven into that of Esme.

Yes, there’s lots of romance and soul-searching for Esme, all just delightful. This is a perfect beach read, elegant and engaging. As another New a York native, I appreciate the real NYC that Rosen has blended into this lovely novel.

I highly recommend this to all my readers and book groups. It’s just delicious! Thank you Netgalley for making my Thanksgiving holiday perfect.

“Every pair of shoes tells a story.”

I most definitely binged this book in 5 hours and 45 minutes! I chose to listen to the audio as I had a lot of things I needed to accomplish, but A Shoe Story gave me just the motivation needed to get it all done (and then some)!

I truly felt like I was listening to a friend tell me her story. I loved Esme, Sy, and Zach. They were all such lovable characters, and I enjoyed getting to know them on a different level. Sy added such a unique aspect to the story - it almost gave it a historical fiction vibe as he recounted his time during the war to Esme.

This story may have centered around the potential for a second chance with the previous love of Esme's life, but it also gave me a front-row seat to watching her friendship with Zach bloom into something more.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a tried and true friends to lovers story, but this was it for me. The purity of their appreciation for one another radiated off the pages.

But, the undertone of the book was undoubtedly Esme taking back control over her life after years of giving everything up for her family. The ending of A Shoe Story was precisely what I wanted for Esme.

Esme had big plans, but when a car accident took her mother’s life and left her father paralyzed, those plans were derailed. Following her father’s death, Esme accepted a dog-sitting job and which could be a second chance to make the plans of her past a reality.

I was so captivated by this book. Stories about second chances, of any kind, fuel my optimism. It was exciting to see Esme get the opportunity to try and revive her dreams, to be reunited with the man she loved but had set free. I must admit, I wavered in my wants for Esme. I definitely was onboard with the original plan in the beginning, but it was easy to see that things changed, she changed. Regardless, I was terribly invested in the outcome of this magical NYC month. I wanted her to find her place, her purpose, herself.

Rosen assembled a wonderful found family for Esme. Her friendship with nonagenarian Sy was really something special. I loved the parallels in their personal stories, and then Rosen went even further with Sy’s story. In a word, it was perfection and called to my sappy soul. I’m serious, my heart did that growing two sizes as I read this tale. I adored Zach too. He was the kind of friend we all need.

I have to admit, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed all the shoes. I don’t consider myself a shoe person, but I was dazzled by the glamour and magic of the shoe room. I started really looking forward to the beginning of each chapter where I was treated to some incredible pair of shoes. It ended up being such a fantastic part of the story.

I am overjoyed that I got to take this journey with Esme. I started and ended this book in tears, but the ones at the end were the happy kind. Overall, a lovely and touching tale.

I really liked the premise of this book but somehow the book still fell a little short for me. Right before Esme is set to graduate from college and start the life she’s dreamed about in New York City she gets a call that her parents have been in a car crash. She is devastated to learn her mother has died and her father is paralyzed. She places her life on hold to care for her father until he passes away years later. She takes a job as a dog sitter in New York City and tries o figure out where she is going and what she plans on doing next. The story is told of chapters paired with a shoes as Esme is super into high priced shoes. The story was sweet and pretty cute.

Classic case of telling and not showing. The writing felt a bit choppy and all over the place. I didn’t mind the story but I also wasn’t invested in anyone. I think someone who likes more wholesome stories might like it though. 👍🏻

I binge read this in one sitting and haven’t stopped thinking about it!

A SHOE STORY follows Esme Nash as she navigates the life she thought she was supposed to have after graduating and living in NYC, versus the life she ends up having, when she makes the decision to give up her dream of working in a New York City art gallery after her Mom dies in a tragic car accident that her parents are involved in.

Years later, Esme takes a job working as a dog sitter in NYC, and the owner just so happens to have a shoe obsession.

I connected with Esme right away and loved that each chapter featured a different shoe that connects to Esme’s life, whether past or present. I loved how open and vulnerable she was, and the theme of friendship and found family woven throughout.

It left me with all the feels when I finished reading, and I loved it so much.

This was a wonderful story about finding yourself.

I enjoyed watching Esme’s journey. How she decided to take a small leap back into her own life which led to meeting some lovely new people and reconnecting with a former flame.

I think my favorite part of this book was Esme’s interactions with Sy. I just loved him and how she helped him reconnect with his lost love.

Esme’s relationship with Zach was also fun. I loved seeing how he helped her get to know New York and also became a confidant. I enjoyed watching their relationship deepen.

This book was mostly about Esme coming to decide what she wanted from life after having put it on hold for 7 years. She slowly comes to understand that she is not the same person and recent experiences have had a lasting impact.

This was a fun story with some deeper elements that come up more toward the end. But ultimately it’s a story about self discovery. (3.75ish)

Is it just me or did pretty much all the self-discovery happen during the months-long hiatus in the book?

So here's the thing, I really wanted to like this book. I loved the idea of the MC trying to decide if she wants to chase her old dreams or create new ones. However, in execution I found a lot missing from the story.

First, the story felt like a love triangle more than anything else. I expected a romance, but I had hoped it would take a backseat to everything else. Unfortunately, it was front and center the whole time. Esme spent more time fawning over men and thinking about love than she did examining what she really wanted out of life. Both men she's considering are with other people and yet it's still discussed like she has a choice between them. Let's set the record straight. If someone is in a monogamous relationship, they are off-limits. It is not okay to discuss "stealing" someone back as if it's in any way justified. It's not. Yet, Esme seemed to believe that she had dibs on her ex. That I could understand, but I didn't understand the amount of support she got from friends to try to steal her ex back. Esme has to discover for herself if her ex is truly happy with his girlfriend. Meanwhile. I'm smacking my head thinking, "WHY?" It's not her place to decide if he's happy or not. Because of this attitude, the whole world in the book seemed to revolve around Esme which was a little off-putting.

The book lacked depth, maybe because it focused so much on the love side of the story. There was also a lot of info-dumping. I do love Esme's friendship with Sy, but I found his constant storytelling and talking very exhausting. Anytime he popped up, I'd immediately become agitated because I knew Esme's story would stall as Sy would ramble on about whatever.

I really wanted to like this book but it fell so flat for me. So this will be another unpopular opinion of mine on a clearly beloved book.

Esme Nash had her perfect life all lined up. She was graduating college, her mom gifted her her dream shoes, she had her dream job lined up and the perfect man to start a life. When her plans got put on pause for a family emergency she left the big city life and dreams behind for a quiet life upstate caring for her father.

Now, seven years later, she's trying to find herself once again. Step one is a dog-sitting gig for a rich New Yorker away at rehab. When she is given permission to raid her stash, she helps herself to all of the expensive, fancy shoes. She is determined to reconnect with her former love, he still lives at the address they were to share so he must still be pining for her.

I love me some great side characters and Esme's new New York friends fit the bill. Zach was such a supportive friend and helped introduce her to all his favorite haunts. Sy, the elderly fish connoisseur she meets at the dog park 100% was my favorite character of the book. He reminded me of Arthur from The Holiday, the famous man about town who takes the newcomer under his wing and of course has a story of his own.

I recommend this book to just about anyone. There are a few triggers in the book so please do research if you need to be cautious of any.

A Shoe Story is about a girl named Esme Nash who's graduating from Dartmouth with plans to move to New York City with her boyfriend. She worked at a fantastic art gallery, but everything got turned upside down when her parents got in an accident, and she had to take care of her paralyzed father. This puts her life on hold. Then seven years later, she gets a chance to try again. Esme decides she doesn't know who she is anymore, so she might as well answer an ad, go to the city, and dog sit to make a whole new life for herself—all at the advice of someone from a memorial service.

I loved how she ends up in an apartment of such a shoe lover -- this is beyond Carrie Bradshaw -- that the kitchen pantry becomes the shoe closet. Going to the dog run is another of Esme's things as a dog sitter. She befriends an elderly gentleman who's basically like Eli Zabar, or something like that. I loved Sy's part of the book and the notion that as we get older that, who's to say we have ready to retire? Sy was prepared to start again. This is a story of second chances, old and new loves, and that it's never too late to start again.

Ugh, if you want a book with a love triangle between a woman and two unavailable men (one married, one in a long term relationship), then this is the book for you.

First off, married is married. I don’t care if she’s in Cuba and you’re in the US, I don’t care if they want different things out of the relationship, Esme should never have been spending all her time with Zach. That was not appropriate. They even have a fake dating relationship, and he takes his wedding ring off to pretend to be her boyfriend. NOT APPROPRIATE. I could not root for this couple at all.

Also, for a book dealing with some very serious subjects, the entire thing remained entirely at the surface level. Esme was quite a flat character and Zach and Liam were basically interchangeable.

I wouldn’t like it at all if I hired a woman to dog sit and found out she had been trying on all of my shoes. As much as I love shoes, that didn’t seem appropriate.

This was just not good.

If you like Emily Henry and Colleen Hoover you will love this story of friends to lovers. The author takes you through Esme’s life after she experiences tragedy and loss and how that changed the course of her life. While it look longer than expected, Esme finds independence, friendship, and love in New York City. Her initial goals of getting her old life back changed as her life itself changed. Love develops in just 28 days, but she takes time to find herself as well as helping a friend, Sy, with his own love story. The perfect summer romantic read that will put a smile on your face.

I love when a book leaves you with life questions to ponder. In A Shoe Story, the main character Esme has spent seven years taking care of her invalid father. His accident happened on the day that was supposed to be the start of her life in NYC but instead changed the direction entirely. What unfolds is second chances, finding your true north, and life lessons, “one pair of shoes at a time.” This book is hard to review without giving spoilers so I will just say, grab this book for a refreshing look at life, endearing characters and a dog named Elvis.

4.5⭐️ A Shoe Story is a wonderful story about new beginnings, second chances, unique friendships and finding your path in life.

Short Synopsis: On the eve of her college graduation Esme seems to have everything planned: an attractive boyfriend, competitive internship and apartment in the heart of NYC. When she receives news that her parents were in a car accident, she puts her life on hold and moves back home. Seven years later, at age 29, Esme has a chance to start over and heads back to NYC wondering if she could pick up life where she left off. When she gets there, she strikes up new friendships, runs into people from her past and has to figure out if what she wanted before the tragedy is still what she wants today.

What I loved:
🚕This book is a beautiful love letter to NYC! Living here, I love how Rosen included descriptions of some of my favorite city landmarks (e.g., Boat Basin, Washington Square Park), activities (e.g., Shakespeare in the Park), and restaurants. She went into detail with the street names mentally transporting me right to where the scene was taking place.
💡How this story is primarily about Esme's self-discovery over her romance interests. Yes, romance does play a part, and you will get a fabulous love story, but it was special to see Esme come to terms with her life and the past first.
🥯The Jewish representation was some of the best I've seen in a book! I personally loved all the yiddish phrases and bagels and spreads talk.
👴The supporting characters! Sy, a ninety year old Jewish yenta, honestly made the book. When you read this, you will know why! His wise words, support for Esme and life stories will make your heart melt. Zach, a bartender turned friend, was an amazing character as well!
👠How the author uses shoes as the markers for the chapters. I personally don't have many designer shoes but am familiar with all the brands Rosen mentions and found it unique.

What I did not love:
❤️‍🩹There was a small element of cheating in this story

Big thanks to the author for a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Book Review: A Shoe Story by Jane L. Rosen

A Shoe Story is an adult contemporary women’s fiction novel about a young woman starting over after caring for her father for seven years.
The day of Esme’s graduation from Dartmouth both of her parent’s were in a car accident which left her mother dead and her father paralyzed and non-verbal. Esme abandoned all of her future plans (and her boyfriend Liam) to care for her father. When he passes away seven years later Esme is finally able to start planning her future again and her first stop is a dog sitting gig for a month in New York City. As Esme explores the city she discovers her former boyfriend Liam is still there living in the apartment they planned on moving in together. But he also had a beautiful wealthy socialite girlfriend and a new 1% lifestyle. When Esme meets bartender and law student Noah she begins to see the type of man she’d like to date but he’s also unavailable and in a long distance relationship. Esme will use the month to meet new friends, explore her employer’s glamorous shoe closet and discover if her dreams of working in the world of fine art and reuniting with Liam are still attainable.
On the surface A Shoe Story might look like a “chick lit” type story about shoes, nights out and catching up with old boyfriends but there is actually a lot more than meets the eye. Through Esme’s friendship with former restaurant owner Sy we learn about NYC in the 40’s, World War 2, pickled fish and a lot of Yiddish words. As Esme contemplates her career in the art world we learn about the works of Gustav Klimt, the life of Jackson Pollack and the pure beauty and esthetic of designer shoes. And A Shoe Story also explores serious topics like alcoholism, PTSD and the strain of being a caregiver to a parent.
I highly recommend A Shoe Story for readers that enjoy stories about starting over after a big setback, facing fears and finding love.

I REALLY enjoyed this story about Esme, a young college grad who dreams of living in NYC with her boyfriend Liam, only to have her life turned upside down when her parents are in a terrible car crash. Leaving everything behind to care for her quadriplegic and mute father, it's not until he dies seven years later that Esme gets a second chance to follow her dreams.

When she finds a month-long dog-sitting job in the city, Esme rekindles her love of New York while also reconnecting with her ex. The mental health rep in this book was excellent! Esme suffers from depression after working as a caregiver for her father and watching everyone else around her living their lives. She has to figure out what will make her happy and also digs into the past, learning some disturbing things about her parent's relationship.

Full of heart and perfect for fans of Sex and the city. The story is full of pretty shoes and big-hearted secondary characters who help Esme find her own path to happiness. A new to me author, this was great on audio narrated by Beth Hicks and I'm excited to read more by Jane L. Rosen. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance digital review copy!

Esme Nash’s life fell off course when her parents were in a devastating car accident. She lost her mother and her father became a paraplegic and also became mute. Just about to finish college, starting a new job at an art gallery and moving in with her boyfriend Liam will give her a great start in life. However, now that her father needs her help, she abandoned all of her plans, including Liam and what they had together.

It is seven years later and her father has passed away. Now Esme is at another turning point in her life. Taking a job as a dog sitter in Manhattan for the next month makes it impossible for her not to think of how life could have been. What’s more as she never really had closure with Liam and she considers various ways in order to clear up why she abandoned f their plans all those years ago.

Life takes a swift turn for Esme. Not only is she temporarily caring for Elvis the dog, she has a room full of shoes to wear whenever and wherever she chooses. Esme also meets a couple of people who impact her life and the decisions she makes. Two of these people are Sy and Zach.

This sensitive story has a lot of strong points, including how each chapter is named based on whatever shoes Esme is wearing. Also, this book deals with some tough issues, and these include alcoholism and bullying. Finding closure with Liam is only one of the things Esme experiences in this book, she finds romance, and that really worked well to round out this delightful read.

Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Hmmm do I dare put in writing on the internet, I loved this. One of its classifications is romance? I dont read romance books. I would classify this as drama. I found this to be a growth season. I absolutely loved how the author used shoes as the segway.

There is an ex-boyfriend, a new guy, and an older man who all have parts in her life. I liked the smart characters, and could see myself doing exactly as the main character. I didn't feel cheated or insulted throughout the book.

The ending was everything I hoped for.

I won the physical copy from the Goodreads Giveaway program, and I am appreciative. I will donate the book. I found the audio on Libby and listened while reading along. The narrator was really good in this role.

This is a sweet book that has more of an old-school romcom vibe if that makes sense. Less sarcastic and smutty, and more heartfelt.

The title and cover looked extremely cheesy, and while the premise is a bit unbelievable, I found the shoe bit to be fun and not annoying.

Interesting but slow and dark. Her mom died in a car crash while her dad was left immobile. She had to be his caretaker for seven years as a result.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for an ARC of A Shoe Story by Jane L. Rosen in exchange for my honest my opinion.

Oh my goodness! I had no idea how much I'd enjoy this book!

Esme instantly caught me. She loves art, shoes, NYC, and is loyal to her family. Losing her family is one thing, but taking care of her father who won't speak for seven years is a whole new level of tragic.

Then during her new chance in New York, she has a fabulous shoe stash at her disposal. She gets to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. I love her friendship with Sy, a 90 year old businessman (retired). Through his stories, she starts to piece together her own story. She makes new friends, sees her old lover, and must reconcile reality—or even take what she deserves.

I laughed and smiled through this book. Esme feels like she could be my friend. It's not too spicy and focuses more on building relationships. But it's a kissing book.

Anyone who loves slice of life stories and romances will adore this book.
